Extremely candid interview with Michael J. Fox - Esquire

- navitatl, on 12/19/2007, -19/+93Hard to read. I don't really like that format.
- Litespeed, on 12/19/2007, -4/+2I couldn't work out if I was reading direct quotes or the author's notes.
- latrosicarius, on 12/19/2007, -4/+3it's like a my space survey lol
- innocentsinner, on 12/19/2007, -0/+10Esquire has one of these What I've Learned things in every issue. They're usually pretty interesting and in the same format
- michaeljsmalley, on 12/19/2007, -6/+20Good read, although yeah... It did read exactly like a series of Mitch Hedberg jokes, except without hilarious punchlines :)
- bingobongony, on 12/19/2007, -22/+4So EXACTLY like it, you mean.
- Ryosen, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Based on the headline, I was hoping for an interview with Theodore "Ted" Logan.
- Cenobite, on 12/19/2007, -5/+125MJF is a hero. He's kicked ass in just about everything he's ever done, and even now with a debilitating syndrome that would put most of us out of comission, he's still as awesome as ever.
- OffPiste, on 12/19/2007, -11/+8"He's kicked ass in just about everything he's ever done"
Except for kicking his addiction to cigarettes.- optamystic, on 12/19/2007, -0/+4Yeah, he'd better be careful, those things might kill him one day.
- smrekar, on 12/19/2007, -25/+2Too bad there is a natural herbal supplement that just went public last week that could have stopped his Parkinson's dead in its tracks. 5 years ago, the founder/discoverer offered MJF it and was told to screw off. There have been extensive tests done and now it is on the market. It also works for LGD and MS and other things. A friend of mine was diagnosed with LGD 8 years ago and was given 2 years to live, this chemist and my buddy hooked up 18 months after his diagnosis and he is still going. There will be an energy drink for triathletes to help their muscles also. MJF could have had a lot more out of life, all he had to do was give it a try.
- cgeorge, on 12/19/2007, -1/+12Link?
- Dysarthria, on 12/19/2007, -1/+5*****. Show any group of neurologists your snake oil. If it cures MS, PD, LGD (what the hell is LGD, limb-girdle muscular dystrophy? which kind - we're up to 13 of those now?), you've made 100 billion dollars. You just described incurable diseases of neurons, axons/myelin, and muscle cells; all with vastly different pathologies.
- smrekar, on 12/19/2007, -3/+1It is found in peppers, brocolli, peanut shells, etc... I forget the name, but it starts with an L. Went public on the stock market last week and opened at 2 bucks a share. It has already been tested in china for the past 5 years, but this is all hear-say. LGD is Lou Gherigs disease. I was clear to say that it stopped it in its tracks, not cured it. You will be hearing about it soon. garanteed.
- smrekar, on 12/19/2007, -3/+1I guess it is called ALS not LGD. i think the substance extracted is called Leucine, but i am not 100% sure.
- duddles, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3Digg posts they don't want you to know about!
- Humptydank, on 12/19/2007, -1/+4And now we're telling you to screw off -- it must be a grand conspiracy.
In any scientific process the responsibility is on you to bring substance to your claims, but you managed to raise the bar stunningly higher by adding a confused and empty set of anecdotal stories that somehow manage to hit nearly every stereotype of quackery and fraud. I hope you're not the marketing department.
So please come back to us when you have some facts, and you're ready to present them to us in a way that recognizes we're adults with more than a junior high school science education.- smrekar, on 12/19/2007, -4/+1It sort of is. You could imagine that a natural herbal suppliment which stops some major muscular diseases dead in their tracks (not a cure mind you) could cost drug companies a substantial amount of money. why wouldn't they want to shut it down?
I have brought some substance to my claims in my reply to dysarthria above. But i am sure if you are in that industry you will hear more about it real soon. I would say that dysarthia's claim of 100 billion dollars is the same as the high power investors in this chemists discovery. specifically telling the chemist, "You will be richer than bill gates." I know some of the facts, but most of it is hearsay. There are a few articles being published by the LGS on it in the coming weeks. They were attempting to disprove it as a magic bullet/snake oil. I will attempt to track it down and enlighten you. - Humptydank, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Well then, I will be watching this thread excitedly for your follow-up.
If you think you are remembering Leucine, I'd be happy to talk in detail about that. If it's Lutein, then we can talk about that too. In fact, put that chemist on the line, let's talk directly to him. If he convinces me then I'll go one better than tell him he'll be richer than Bill Gates, I'll invest directly myself.
But before he gets all excited he should understand that I'm a bit of a tough sell. Not because I'm a dick (that's a coincidence) but because science is a tough sell. That's the point of it.
So by all means, let's lay out the case right here in public, and if he makes a strongly scientific case he'll be off and running.- smrekar, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Talked with Tom the Chemist today. Luteolin is the stuff. Lutimax is the method. Here is a link two 2 pdfs that might interest you.

- gudnbluts, on 12/19/2007, -19/+30Too bad there is an abdominal workout machine that just went public last week that could have stopped his Parkinson's dead in its tracks. 5 years ago, the founder/discoverer offered MJF it and was told to screw off. There have been extensive tests done and now it is on the market. It also works for AIDS and Mad Cow Disease and other things. A friend of mine was diagnosed with Syphalis 8 years ago and was given 2 years to live, this aerobics instructor and my buddy hooked up 18 months after his diagnosis and he is still going. - TitanX13, on 12/19/2007, -16/+10abdominal workout machine???
stomach crunches???
how can it work for mad cow disease when their has been no confirmed cases in a human being.
your kidding me syphalis??? so it helps with STD's too
parkensons is a motor system disorder which is a part of you nervous system- kidcodea, on 12/19/2007, -6/+16wake da ***** up
- illegalcortex, on 12/19/2007, -1/+2@TitanX13: I have no idea why you're being dugg down and gudnbluts/kidcodea are being dugg up so much. I can only assume they have their own personal mob. Which means this comment will also be dugg down. At least I'll be in good company.
- electrichead, on 12/19/2007, -1/+1Read smrekar's comment above gudnbluts that's been dugg down
- ayeroxor, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2 illegalcortex: Good God, you poor stupid bastard. gudnbluts' post was obviously sarcasm. The 'mob' is everyone else on Earth who got the joke, you ***** conspiracy nut.
- Schda, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Well I accidently dugg him down, I browse at -10 and so anything that is hidden is usually pretty darn bad so I missed the joke.
- illegalcortex, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1Actually, by the time I got there smrekar's comment was dugg down so far I didn't even see it. I don't make a habit of clicking on every double-digit negative link in the comments (there's a lot of them, you know). And without that context, I don't see how you can expect anyone to get that he's being sarcastic. C'mon, he sounds like every other smrekar-ish post out there. I know that was the point, but it's close enough that without context it isn't obvious that he's not one.
And I'm no conspiracy nut. Have you not used digg for very long? Have you not seem weirdness in people's comments being dugg up/down? Usually it balances out over the hours. But sometimes completely factualy statements are temporarily dugg down and moronic comments dugg up. And then there's the stories where the people come in and bury everything except for one comment. You're aware of this, right? Am I making that up? I've also seen a trend lately where they come in and digg UP every comment. So even 100 comments down, every single comment is up to at least 20 diggs.
So please, remember that another human being is on the other side of the screen. Don't hurl around insults that you wouldn't feel comfortable doing to someone's face. Otherwise, I think you kind of miss the tone of the original MJ Fox article.

- maliath, on 12/19/2007, -2/+7To be frank, I'm skeptical. I find it hard to believe an abdominal workout machine could inhibit the effect of prions and also stop a retrovirus that destroys leukocytes. Sounds like garbage to me. I suggest you post links and studies.

- samssf, on 12/19/2007, -5/+11You obviously missed the point, you stupid *****.
- pintomp3, on 12/19/2007, -1/+3really? is that why the catholic church is against contraception? is that why conservative christians bomb abortion clinics to "save lives"? is that why every religious nutjob from pat robertson and jerry falwell to huckabee and ron paul are against abortions? there is no scientific basis for equating a zygote with a human being. it is an exclusive view of the christian conservative. jews, muslims, hindus, etc don't have a problem with abortions.
- Player1, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I'm pro choice, but what the ***** are you talking about?
A. Judaism and Islam are staunchly pro life. I can't speak for Hindus.
B. Aside from the fact that, if left alone, a zygote will eventually grow into a human being, I suppose you're right. There is no scientific connection between the two.
C. "is that why every religious nutjob from pat robertson and jerry falwell to huckabee and ron paul are against abortions?" I'm an atheist, and I'll agree that Pat Robertson is insane, but a belief in god does not make someone a "nut job." Oh, and Ron Paul doesn't believe in abortion, but he doesn't plan on instituting any anti-abortion legislation.
D. Some advice: think while you type.
- Player1, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I'm pro choice, but what the ***** are you talking about?
- defektiv, on 12/19/2007, -2/+8now now.. religion is a toy used by bush, not actually adhered to or taken seriously. any person that can claim to be 'of God' in one breathe and allow so many innocent people to die for money on the other is not even human, let alone religious.
- TitanX13, on 12/19/2007, -2/+2actually it isnt but the religious make it a issue
if it wasnt then we would be alot farther in the research but thanks to the religious idiocy - Player1, on 12/19/2007, -2/+4Wow. Finally, somebody on the internet has the gravitas to speak out against Bush. I had heard stories, but finally, you came. I didn't think it could be true. But it is, and it's like some kind of fantastic dream that I never want to wake up from. Thank you bigbooger, you brave son of a bitch.
I'm as anti-Bush as the next guy, but bitching about it is just getting old. Want to do something? Write your congressman.

- stemwinder, on 12/19/2007, -1/+8Michael will always and forever be just cool as *****, and Parkinson's disease is sad for anybody. Let's just be glad we've all found a way to move forward on stem cell research sans-embryo, so we can make a real go at doing away with these sorts of awful diseases.
And male pattern baldness. Please. - bingobongony, on 12/19/2007, -27/+5They need to make a Back to the Future 4. And I know it is difficult for him, but hear me out. In Back to the Future, he gets hit by his grandfather and hits his head REALLY hard on the pavement, knocking him out. We'll call that Concussion #1. In 2012 in Back to the Future 2, which is just about a week later in his life, Biff's goons knock him out and bring him up to Biff. We'll call that Concussion #2. Then, less than a week after that, in 1885, Marty stumbles down a hill running away from a bear and slams head first into Shamus McFly's fence, jocking him out.
Three concussions in about 12 days is likely to do some permanent neurological damage. Hence, Michael J. Fox's condition is an ASSET for the role.- tytanium0503, on 12/19/2007, -0/+9wtf

If the foo *****... - gudnbluts, on 12/19/2007, -7/+4To be fair, embryonic stem cell research does look unlikely to cure the twisted logic of people who think it's more ethical that the unused clumps of cells are destroyed, rather than being used to benefit mankind.
- TitanX13, on 12/19/2007, -3/+4please be quiet when you dont know what you are talking about
guess what the president veto stem cell research. - p51d007, on 12/19/2007, -2/+3no kidding! It was a STUNT.....he went of of his meds for a few days just to elevate the level of his handicap. Looked "worse" on tv
- gudnbluts, on 12/19/2007, -2/+4Interesting theory, only slightly ruined by the fact that the meds are what make you shake. If he'd gone off his meds he'd be unable to move.
- crestfall, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1You're both wrong.
- amightywind, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1That son-of-a-gun looked like he had ants in his pants!

- xSPACEMANxSPIFF, on 12/19/2007, -9/+2All I care about is if he is doing another Back to the Future!!
- bmalnad, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1Not an interview. But still a very good read.
- Fadakar, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2Really great read. Dugg for MJF.
- mrzack, on 12/19/2007, -16/+2He drank too much Diet Pepsi. Too much sugar, too much neuro toxin aspartame. Stop drinking cola. If you know what's good for you and don't want to end up like Mr. Fox.
- H0tKarl, on 12/19/2007, -0/+2He did switch to coffee for a while though.
- Dysarthria, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3You're a ***** idiot. The only substance ever proven to cause Parkinson's is a substance called MPTP - a heroin analog that gave junkies PD in the 70's and 1980's.
Now, if someone had proof this poor guy used heroin in the 80's, MAYBE you'd have a potential cause for him developing Parkinson's at the insanely young age of 30 - a rare age to get this disease most people get in their 60's. - Pecnut, on 12/19/2007, -0/+0*Diet* Pepsi ... doesn't have sugar in.
- BuzFortuna, on 12/19/2007, -15/+1This isn't even an interview. Yet again, Digg fails me...
- seanieb, on 12/19/2007, -3/+2It could have been an interview with Kipling, Michael you are the man, my son!
- crazynewz, on 12/19/2007, -10/+0I not think so. I think Micheal J Fox he is smart.
- ProvocateurCrow, on 12/19/2007, -2/+1I wonder if he is smart enough that he knows all about William Cooper?
- H0tKarl, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6Wasn't that the chick from The Wonder Years?
- 5555, on 12/19/2007, -3/+7That was one of the most compelling 'interviews' I've ever read and I loved the format. Great insight into a great actor. I'd purchase a book of writings like this.
- mcbeezle, on 12/19/2007, -5/+1His dad was a jockey? That makes sense.

Truer words have never been spoken. What a guy. - laterthandawn, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8Brilliant. Way to go, McFly.
- jefuchs, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3I was a big fan when he was healthy. He's really risen above in his illness, and made me a bigger fan. What a great guy.
- reasonyousmile, on 12/19/2007, -0/+11I wish he could be remembered for this quote:
"My happiness grows in direct proportion to my acceptance, and in inverse proportion to my expectations."- Cooknn, on 12/19/2007, -0/+3Freaking brilliant. The guy is a rock star, IMHO. I wish I would have read this quote before I got married. Maybe my boys would still have a dad that lived at their house. Then again, I did marry a psycho.
- flauntbaby, on 12/19/2007, -0/+8One of the good guys.
