Basically the books central theme of tolerance is totally lost on these people. If Dumbledore had been discriminated against as a mudblood these people would say, "That's wrong." But now they hate the character because he's gay.

What I think is really cowardly and gay though is writing seven books, for children, and never developing the character in such a way, and then to come out a couple of months later with, "by the way..."

But you seem to be mistaken in thinking this will bring a wedge between the story and her readers. The reaction so far has been very favorable.
And why does she bring this up? Because she was asked whether, in her mind, Dumbledore had ever been in love. If you've never written fiction you may not know that a lot of what a character has done never makes it into print. He's not even real, but it still matters to people. As if being gay makes a person less. I'm not gay myself, but I have seen enough gay bashing in my life to understand its a horrible way to look at human beings when you judge them by their sexual preferences. I guess our society has not come too far, really.
