No on 8! - Fleagleman, on 11/10/2008, -5/+91You should warn the police not to antagonize her. She can start fires with her mind. And she knows aliens.
- 0260, on 11/10/2008, -3/+41ban marriage
- barius, on 11/10/2008, -7/+40@mbraynard,
Democracy lost because all that the Mormons/Catholics/etc achieved was to prove that separate of Church and State is a breach-able barrier.
While you may think that enacting a law that limits the rights of homosexuals is 'just fine', consider how much easier it will now be for other religions like Islam to have their desired laws enacted. Do you recall all the trouble in France when Muslims demanded the right to wear the Burkah in school? There were no federal laws prohibiting them from wearing the Burkah, but many school had banned them because it made it difficult to identify students arriving for exams. Muslims won the 'right' to force schools to remove their bans. That was a triumph for Church over State too.
(footnote: I am not anti-Islamic, simply pro-separation of State and Church). - cre8tivate, on 11/10/2008, -5/+32Equality is not a game. Everybody loses when there is blatant discrimination.
- benicillin1, on 11/10/2008, -5/+27yeah and the right to vote was defined as a right given only to WHITE MEN until we realized it was ***** retarded and changed the definition. just bc the definition of marriage was man and woman, from whatever source you derived that definition, doesnt mean its correct and set in stone for all of time.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -5/+25Well, she can probably spell 'buried'.
- distressless, on 11/10/2008, -2/+21You completely have the right. We also completely have the right not to listen to you.
- inactive, on 11/10/2008, -7/+26huh. drew barrymore looking, acting, sounding like drew barrymore. just like every role she's ever had..
- thoughtlover, on 11/10/2008, -4/+20"A woman and a woman together are beautiful, just as a man and a woman together are beautiful. Being with a woman is like exploring your own body, but through someone else. When I was younger I used to go with lots of women. Totally. I love it".
-- Drew Barrymore (2004) - psion01, on 11/10/2008, -2/+16It's a fair argument that marriage has its basis in religion and most religions don't condone homosexuality. I'd think the solution is obvious: secular marriages conducted by the state (I think they're called "civil unions" in Europe) should have only the restrictions and requirements accepted by voters and elected representatives. Traditional marriages, performed by churches and other religious institutions shouldn't have any requirements forced upon them by the state -- separation of church and state and all that. Homosexual couples could thus get married through civil unions unless their chosen religion has no proscriptions against gay lifestyles.
- ncc74656m, on 11/10/2008, -3/+16Bless you Drew! Fight on! This injustice will not stand.
I call on Anonymous to launch attacks on the FLDS, and show them what hatred and intolerance is all about (again!).
I can't believe that a group of people who spent so long suffering would presume to force this on another group. (I'm also looking at you, 70% of blacks that supported Prop 8!) - AFelsinger, on 11/10/2008, -6/+19lol... this really makes no sense. a lot of people care what celebrities think and say, regardless of how you may feel about them. movements always have individuals who, sometimes temporarily, become the focus.
if you want to talk about things with "no point"... there's no point in criticizing those who care about celebrity actions. - Travelsonic, on 11/10/2008, -1/+14QFI.
Civil rights is not something you abandon. - BadseedJR, on 11/10/2008, -2/+14Oh, you got us! You quoted a definition! No definitions have ever changed over the course of history, so you're solid on that one.
- Maddoktor2, on 11/10/2008, -4/+16marriage |ˈmarij|
noun
1. the formal union of TWO PEOPLE, typically recognized by law, by which they become LIFE PARTNERS.
There, fixed for posterity.
Personally I'm not gay, but come on already - there's little enough love and happiness in the world without legislating against it, no?
Remember, kids - it matters not whom you love nor how - only that you do. - XxtraLarGe, on 11/10/2008, -8/+20Wait a minute. Did you say DREW BARRYMORE? How many people knew that DREW BARRYMORE was against Prop. 8 before the election?!? This changes everything!

-- Martin Luther King, Jr. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/10/2008, -3/+13It is the obligation of the government to protect the rights of the minority against the prejudices of the majority.
People said the same things as you about segregation. - Travelsonic, on 11/10/2008, -1/+11Marriage is not necessarily going to lead to bestiality or pedophillia.
Please shove your overtly zealous head back up your ass. - 911ducktail, on 11/10/2008, -3/+13the matter of semantics *is* the argument as far as I'm concerned.
what has essentially been done is you have created two *legal* classes of marriage
civil union
marriage
what this is doing is saying "hey you're not married, but this civil union thing should be fine for you"
when in reality its legally enforcing "separate but equal" which violates the 14th amendment. toss into the mix the fact that *NO* argument can be made against homosexual marriage that is not religious based, the 'yes on prop 8' people are violating the establishment clause as well
to me it boils down to not whether or not you are ok with gay marriage, but whether you're ok with limiting the constitutional rights of others because it makes people feel icky. - vbullinger, on 11/10/2008, -3/+13Honestly? ALL of your energy should be focused not on getting laws that say that gays can marry.
It should be focused on getting the government out of marriage.
Marriage is one of the sacraments. Here are the seven sacraments:
Baptism
Confirmation (Chrismation in the Orthodox tradition)
Holy Orders or Ordination
The Eucharist, Mass or Lord's Supper
Reconciliation of a Penitent (Confession)
Anointing of the Sick or Extreme Unction
Matrimony
Marriage is a creation of religion. You wouldn't have the government regulate baptism, would you? "Oh, no, gays can't get baptized!" "Yes, they can!" This is the same argument. Literally.
If your church says "yes, gays can marry," then you can get married. No government should be allowed to regulate that or say otherwise. If your church says "nope, homosexuality is a sin," then I guess you can't. No need for government involvement.
"But... I'm not religious! You're trying to say I can't get married?!?" If you're not religious, why would you get baptized? Why would you take communion? Makes no sense. Feel free to call your relationship a "marriage" or what have you, but you're literally taking a religious thing out of religion. That's kind of not possible.
If you want gay marriage, and not civil unions or whatever, get the government out of it. Not everyone will acknowledge your marriage, but who cares what bigots think, anyway? :) - GeneralFault, on 11/10/2008, -0/+10As an example of what barius has said;
I've heard many arguments in favor of prop 8 lately that go something along the lines of "god says"... I'm a married atheist. Upon bringing this up in a particularly religious group, many suggested that I was not really married. How many steps from here will it take before we add "Marriage is between a man and woman of God" to our constitution. How many steps after that before we add "Christian God", then "non-Catholic" and perhaps "Baptist only"?
On top of this, I am in a "mixed marriage". Only a few decades ago, I would not be allowed to be with my wife in many states. It was not to many steps ago that the law read "Marriage is between a man and a woman of the same race." ...shudder.... - Spire3660, on 11/10/2008, -6/+16Drew is a big time producer, she doesnt need to act to have a successful career, just FYI. Straw man attacks make you look dumb.
- weatherlsp, on 11/10/2008, -4/+13The majority can't strip away rights from the minority. Like it or not, the Supreme Court already ruled that marriage is a civil right.
- BeerRules, on 11/10/2008, -0/+9One of the things that stuck with me about gay rights is that it seems to be like giving african americans the right to vote, and jim crow laws. I can only hope that one people will look back and ask themselves how we could discriminate against a group of people like that.
Don't get me wrong, if the church wants to tell a gay couple that they can't be married inside their church fine, but the courts should be allowing these people to sign marriage licenses, and allow same sex couples the same rights as married couples when it comes to taxes adoption, and other rights given to married couples.
It really is a shame, in my opinion. - inactive, on 11/10/2008, -3/+12Hypothetically, what if the majority voted in a measure to ban straight marriage and only allow gay marriage? Would you be so cavalier in your acceptance that democracy had "triumphed"?
No? Why, because the public had voted to trample on your rights? Welcome to the tyranny of the majority -- something our Constitution is designed to recognize and defeat. - baldboy7, on 11/10/2008, -2/+11you are expressing your opinion. obviously others dont agree.
- rancemo, on 11/10/2008, -3/+12The best way to please everyone, is to get "the state" out of marriage completely. Let it be handled through churches and private contracts. Stay the ***** out of your neighbors personal affairs!
- ImADharmaBum, on 11/10/2008, -1/+10If only that kind of healthy skepticism were applied to all products presented to us as ideas.
- cricket01, on 11/10/2008, -3/+11The same logic you are using was used to try and stop inter-racial marriage.
- AnalogAssassin, on 11/10/2008, -3/+11Personally, I'm all for gay marriage. I'd love to watch that on Divorce Court. I'm sure their divorces are even funnier.
But seriously, this was a vote that was put up to the people and the people voted. I don't see what the legislators can do that's more fair than letting the people decide. Am I missing something? - secrity, on 11/10/2008, -2/+10Besides being "separate but equal", many employers don't recognize civil unions as being marriages.
This was found to be a problem in New Jersey, which by law, civil unions are equal to marriage; UPS refused to extend insurance coverage to civil unions. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/10/2008, -1/+8A majority also supported segregation in many parts of the U.S.
Should we have listened to them?
Civil liberties trump democracy every time. Sorry. - DigSomeMore, on 11/10/2008, -8/+15Dang it! I left too early, what the heck. All us photographers were out way before this...lucky guys who stayed around.
- revjustin2, on 11/10/2008, -0/+7Saying that protests are anti-American is, perhaps, one of the most retarded things I have ever scanned my eyes across. If you can possibly explain your logic to me in a coherent manner, I would applaud you.
- amoirae, on 11/10/2008, -11/+18If you didn't really care you wouldn't have commented on it, you idiotic tool.
- Jforsyth89, on 11/10/2008, -1/+8Yup, you're right. It's not discriminatory at all. Historically, America has taken the same stance on issues such as handicap access in buildings. You see, handicapped people have the same rights as non-handicapped people. They can use stairs and escalators just like anyone else. Therefore, it's not necessary to build ramps or elevators when constructing a new building.
OH WAIT. - vbullinger, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8That's a painful pill for a lot of people to swallow.
Luckily, we don't live in a Democracy. We live in a democratic Republic. In a Republic, everyone has a voice. Democracy is mob rule. The tyranny of the majority. 51% control 49%. That's f-ing psycho. Look it up. Our country was founded as a Republic and has been twisted into a Democracy by a bunch of evil psychos.
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what's for dinner. In a Republic, the sheep has a gun. - randomstupid, on 11/10/2008, -3/+9wow . I guess ignorance is a mental disorder as well .
- fleischner, on 11/10/2008, -4/+10Was she one of the people who snatched a cross from a pro-prop-8 woman's hand and destroyed it?
- markperia, on 11/10/2008, -1/+7marriage isn't a creation of religion. The ceremony is but the union itself isn't.
- barstegry, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8Mobilize them to elect Obama and they shoot down your Prop 8.... somebody didn't do their homework...
- johnsweber, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8The only choice involved with homosexuality is to choose to come out of the closet and be yourself. No one just ups and decides to like the same sex just for kicks, that's ridiculous.
Are you attracted to a particular type of the opposite gender? Do you choose to like, for example, skinny blondes? Or is it just natural to you? - ibeetle, on 11/10/2008, -2/+8But the people who voted Yes were lied to and mislead. And not by fellow Californians, but by millions of dollars funneled in from out of state.
How can anyone make a informed decision when the Proposition was misrepresented by the Christian right? There ads were nothing but fear and hatred. If Prop 8 failed day care and preschools would be forced to teach homosexuality, and Churches would loose their Tax Free status; these were just two of the many lies the so called Christians wove to scare people into voting Yes. - AWBoy666, on 11/10/2008, -1/+6He doesn't support gay marriage. Interesting, isn't it?
- mrsteveman1, on 11/10/2008, -8/+13Democracy didn't do *****. A vocal minority of ***** nutjob religious bigots lied about a proposition and threw $37 MILLION dollars at it, and got a majority of people to vote for the thing.
- GiJoeBob, on 11/10/2008, -2/+7Yeah, that was stupid, but he has a point. Is ticking off drivers a way to win people?
- Rivetgeek, on 11/10/2008, -0/+5I vote for Prop 19: "Abolish all invisible superfriends"
