- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+120Actually if you want to talk to a Mexican about anything, you wouldn't talk to "Carlos Mencia". He's not Mexican. He's a half German born in Honduras.
- netburnr, on 10/12/2007, -22/+126I called and the guy who picked up was very nice. I do not support phone bombing places, but I felt that I should go ahead and just let them know that they might want to reconsider the ban.
I was told that the owner has only told him to leave for awhile to "cool down" and the gentleman himself said he is a big fan of both Joe and Carlos. Had Joe not posted the video none of this would have ever happened to him. - Sparkster185, on 10/12/2007, -10/+93Almost as bad as the crush digg has on Kevin Rose.
- legendary, on 10/12/2007, -22/+102How cute diggs got a man crush on Joe Rogan
- marcuschi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+77Joe deserves a hell of a lot more respect than he normally does. He is very well spoken and an incredible thinker. Not only is he funny, but I didn't know he's also crazy smart. I was watching this the other day and it blew my ***** mind, literally, it got down and started deepthroating my brain. Joe Rogan and DMT:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grcqs9cDuN8 - UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -9/+66So far 1,925 people care. Welcome to Digg.
- Dean129, on 10/12/2007, -13/+69"call the Comedy Store 323-656-6225 telling them to UN-BANN JOE ROGAN or else!" or else what exactly?
- thexfile, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59This topic looks very familiar.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53I have seen and enjoyed the work of both of these comedians. What I saw on the video was Joe Rogan presenting his case, and Carlos Mencia calling names. I have never been a fan of the "oh yeah? f@#k you" school of winning an argument, and I have never been a fan of censorship. Denying Joe Rogan a place to work, insisting on his agency dropping him, and all the other bs that Mencia seems to be pulling is his way of censoring his critics. If someone catches you stealing, be a man and admit it and move on. I will be supporting Joe Rogan in any way I can.

Exact your revenge, Digg Army - Skab, on 10/12/2007, -5/+48Funny how Ned is just attacking Joe as a person now, not as a comedian. I think he's just trying to get ***** up by rogan so he can sue him, before ned gets sued for plagiarism.
- Azariel, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45Supposedly, Joe did try to solve it privately and was pretty much lied to and ignored.
I don't know Joe Rogan and I don't know Carlos Mencia but from what I've seen, Mencia's acting like a sissy getting other people (his agent and the comedy store) to do his dirty work. It's all pretty pathetic.
Somebody said that we shouldn't care because Joe Rogan is a small-time comic? I think that's the reason people care. Whatever, tho, that's just me. - courtarro, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Sparkster185: "Almost as bad as the crush digg has on Kevin Rose."
Isn't that, like, incest? - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40I ***** care. Mencia is an idiot, he isn't funny, and got called out for stealing other peoples material. So what does Hollywood do? They side with him and try to bury Rogan. Thats *****. This is the fan base fighting back to the corporate entertainment industry telling them we want quality when we turn on the television not morons like Mencia and we don't support beating on the little guy. The little guy being all the comedians Mencia stole material from and don't have enough pull to do anything about it.
- almondfilter, on 10/12/2007, -9/+40Its not like this is about Paris Hilton...its about 2 relevent comedians and one of them steals and profits heavily from it and finally got called out on it. I didn't realize little digg was the Wall Street Journal...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35It could just be because I'm a local, but Joe Rogan is pretty well known in LA Comedy circles. He's been at the Comedy store for over a decade.
Live stand-up isn't like an HBO special. You see a lot of ***** comics. I've never seen Rogan bomb. The dude gets heckled to ***** and back every all the time and he always comes out on top. - superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Joe is also an established talent who had no need to take on Mencia and even less need to go to the trouble of putting it on the web. Still there are thing that standup comics hold sacred....and creativity is one. Mencia blew an off hand comment into a shouting match and Joe stood his high moral ground. Stealing is wrong in every culture for a reason.
Comics toss jabs like the "Menstealia" comment at showcases and open mikes all the time, and true or not they are usually just taken in stride...but it hit a nerve with Mencia because it is true, and Mencia blew up. Mencia is an over-acting hack and theif. Any comic worth 5 minutes of stage time can spot the thievery tendency on him simply by watching him preform....comics develop a sort of sixth sense about this sort of thing after a while. For Carlos the give aways are the over acting and lack of constant voice throughout.
The video just put into stone and the public eye everything I have ever heard any comic say about Carlos Mencia. - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30It's not about Joe Rogan.
Man, some of you people are STUPID.
It's about someone who stands up to someone else with more money and power who is stealing peoples' work. - joshua5, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30@bsolidgold
Rogan has always been an outspoken critic of Mencia. What happened is the culmination of a long feud.
Rogan isn't my first choice for anything but if he wants to be the one with enough balls to stand up to Mencia and the corporate entertainment industry that supports people like Mencia, then so be it - I'll support Rogan. - crash331, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-7841918711943453918
- Technopundit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Steve Martin was right. Comedy is not pretty.
- theWaterboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29I have been a huge fan of Carlos Mencia on Comedy Central for a while, until a friend of mine told me he rips odd George Lopez' material. I didn't really believe that until I saw this video.
I give this a digg, and two snaps and a circle --- just for exposing the truth. - joeydoo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Joe Rogan presents Fear Factor and thinks the moon landings were a hoax. That's reason enough to dislike him...... but for some bizarre reason I don't dislike him....... I know weird isn't it. Maybe it's because he has principles or something.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25Someone who doesn't know what they're talking about spouting "facts" about copyright law? On the Internet? No way!
It's funny you bring up musicians. Both comedians and songwriters get the same series of royalties (mechanical royalties etc.) usually from the same places. If you buy a Bill Hicks record, his estate gets so many points etc.
If a pop-singer performs a song they didn't write, the songwriter still gets publishing.
I also see you are a master of debate. Good luck on the "I don't care if he steals, you're just a whiner" argument. May I also suggest "You're gay" and "Your mom" as follow ups. - fordhamwt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26He's a ***** stage performer, not a lawer. He handled it in his arena.
I swear. Everyone sits there and bitches about too many lawsuits, but when someone goes and handles something like this, they get all pissy. I think this is fine. This literally got the facts out there and kept whiny bitches out of the court system. - bg2500, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22@Ambicar
Listening to copied music is not the same as copying music and then reselling it, claiming it is your work. That is why this can not be compared to the DRM debate. - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24People care that have principals and morals.
- Emilio8605, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I noticed that too. His comments held no water at all, and were just a string of "you're a pussy" and "*****"s that were obviously meant to get Joe to snap worse than George Lopez did so that Mencia would then try to use that against him. Instead, Joe only figuratively tore him a new *****.
- almondfilter, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Bobby Lee. Hmm. All of a sudden Menstealia doesn't steal? He obviously doesn't want to burn any bridges or get blackballed, though I doubt Ned has that much power. Almost every comedian hates him.
- superalamar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19You seem to know absolutely ***** about stand-up comedy. New jokes are written every day. Go to an open mike and count the notebooks vs the joke books....
- Pile, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21This is a real news story. Think about it. This isn't some innocuous low-level-distraction like the Anna Nicole Smith suicide. This is a classic story about someone who stands up to someone else who is doing something wrong, and gets punished for it. Rogan confronted Menstelia because it was the right thing to do, and what we're seeing is how money and power in Hollywood can be abused to punish people who try to do the right thing. This is an important story that should be kept in the spotlight long enough for those involved to feel they can't get away with this kind of stuff as easily as they thought.
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16What planet are you on that the Carlos Mencia Bud commercial was ranked number one?
And come on, your big evidence for Carlos being original is that ***** commercial that was ridiculously predictable? The way your post is formatted makes it look like you're being paid to post it all over the Internet by Menstealia. So does he pay well? - troybot, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19they should settle this in the UFC 'octagon'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"You going to say all his jokes are stolen? Not the jokes in that
Bud commercial. If all his act is stolen from other comics, and
stolen from CDs and Records of other comedians, why haven't
any single one of them publicly SUED HIM? That would end it, right?"
When Dennis Leary BLATANTLY stole Bill Hicks' act, there was no lawsuit.
"Carlos has a way of making controversial things like racism
and our idiotic politically correct life in this country funny.
That is so hard to do, so it doesn't blow up in your face.
There was another commercial at the Superbowl, remember?
That SNICKERS commercial with the mansmooch? Not funny.
Carlos has had those kinds of jokes on his show but the way
he did it was always funny. This guy is a comic genius."
"Carlos Mencia" is imitating a long line of comics such as Lenny Bruce, Richad Pryor, Eddie Murphy, Ahmed Ahmed, etc. Racially charged comedy is nothing new and there are people who have done it far better. His delivery is great, but calling him a genius is a little bit much.
"Let his success and popularity speak for itself. Joe seems to
be the one who is not funny here, just regretably sad."
Stand-up isn't just what you see on TV. There is a long tradition of stand-up in Los Angeles and Orange County. We are fortunate enough to have a high concentration of great venues and great talent within a short driving distance. We have standards like the Comedy Store and the Improv chain, as well as places like the UCB theater. Living here I grew up on stand-up and improv and have seen a lot of comedians over the years.
Joe Rogan has been performing here for over 10 years. He always does well. He's not one of my favorites, but he is far from a bad comic.
Unless the entire world of stand-up has been stealing from Carlos Mencia for the last 20 years, he is using other people's material.
I've personally seen a lot of things in little venues by unknown comics that make their way into Mencia's live act later on. If you go to a club a few times a week you tend to see the same people and get to know their material. You also see other comics sitting in the back and you can get a pretty good idea of who's biting off who. - StackedSubs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I actually found this post and most of the comments quite interesting, and I hadn't heard anything much about this feud before.
- timeinseconds, on 10/12/2007, -33/+46Carlos Mencia ***** sucks, if I want to hear a ***** Mexican scream about racism and how America ***** sucks, I would much rather talk to anyone else than him.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Comedians usually don't have influence in large media outlets. Mencia does. That's why they avoid the confrontation.
Mencia also has a massive public forum from which to attack you. Unless you have equal ground to defend yourself, you risk becoming a target and burring your career.
He can also apparently have you bumped from performing at certain venues as well. - Kevin108, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13If you kids got behind politics the way you get behind stupid celebrities you could change the world, you know that? The biggest problem with this country is that people care more about what's happening on American Idol than the White House.
- RonAcierno, on 02/07/2008, -4/+15Ned has it coming to him ... and no they couldnt have made a peaceful compromise backstage or no one would have seen the reality of that dumbass ( Mencia )
- chakl, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17@netburnr,
you mean if Joe hadn't exposed Mencia for the fraud he is, none of this would have ever happened. What *****, the man tries to save the integrity of comedy, and tries to make sure that people who deserve credits for their acts get their credits, but if nobody ever called mencia out, we would be back to square one and comedians who deserve bookings dont get them. So what do you think is better? - standalonematt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Google Dane Cook and Louis C.K. - in fact Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia are the two with the worst reputations for joke stealing right now.
- dataminer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I respect Joe for standing up and telling the truth. It's refreshing to hear a person like that and I'm sure Lenny Bruce would be smiling about this if he was still with us. Jeez, were fed so much ***** on TV (and the web) that the truth is becoming more and more valuable.
- Flawed77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Digg cares because Joe is the underdog. He did what was right and then got slammed by the club and his agent for it.
- slapded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13carlos mencia has always been a joke stealer. he cant even do a joke if its not about race. what a moron
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@graberc
No, whoever wrote his wikipedia article says he has a Mexican mother. HE has said on more than one occasion that his "family" is Honduran. He has a long running bit about how he is called Mexican in Socal, Puerto Rican in NY and Cuban in Florida.
Since his father is German, I'm guessing that makes his mother the Honduran. - Pile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I love it when people criticize other people for being confrontational and principled. It sheds light on the fact that people who dump on someone like Joe Rogan are the ones with the inferiority complex, the ones who are not confrontational (unless they do it from the cowardly guise of internet anonymity). Little, whiny, internet cowards who resent that other people have balls that they could only dream of. So he's an arrogant aggrandizing "tool" because you are too much of a coward to ever do what he's doing so you'd better belittle him to make you feel better about your pathetic self.
- tmjoen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Just like your comment.
- dunezone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Its the last stand of a man who is about to fall. When you know you lost you start to take cheap shots at your opponent, Mencia knew he lost, thats why his only comeback was "whiny bitch" and calling him gay. I just think back to highschool at all the fights I saw, the one who was losing just accused the other one of being gay.
- poxonyou, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I love how these Mencia and Rogan articles are being Dugg so much that they seem to be creating a backlash against Joe Rogan already. Let's not lose sight of the point here. This isn't about how/good bad you think Rogan is as a comedian, or a human being, or whether you know who he is or not ("I never heard of him, he must suck! Carlos rulz!"), it's about what Carlos Mencia has done and is doing now. Rogan isn't exactly my style of comedian, but it's not about him, unless he is stealing a bunch of jokes and using his fame to crush other comedians who exposed him.
- joshbradley, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I just want Mencia off the ***** air. I don't give a ***** about Joe Rogan.
