  • jcharak58, on 03/27/2009, -1/+2false. I work as an actuary in a reserving department for an insurance company. Look at combined ratios. A combined ratio shows for every dollar taken in how much is paid out. There are times where it is greater than 1.000 and times that are less than 1.000.

    For example this company had a CR of .985. So for every dollar of premium charged they gave back .985 of it (ie made 0.015 or 1.5 cents)

    The companies will invest the money in bonds and other safe assets (as mandated by law) and make some more money on that.
