- Pssdoff, on 10/11/2007, -2/+144Why does wealth start a $0? I'm more in the -$50,000 range...
- Rinnt, on 10/11/2007, -3/+143lol! I set my occupation as systems administrator and it told me I have high prestige!
From "wtf do you do again?" to "it's ITs fault", that is a rather inaccurate assessment. - MarrowMan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+100Apparently, wealth & education have nothing to do with intelligence
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+93So wait... im unemployed and just live off of a trust fund. I didnt see a selection for that?? Now how do i figure out how prestigious i am??? :(
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -3/+88She's too good for you, better not tell her
- Salgat, on 10/11/2007, -5/+88You need to contribute more to the relationship ;)

"Bachelors should be heavily taxed, it is not fair that some men are happier than others" --Oscar Wilde - R34C7, on 10/11/2007, -1/+81Top 10 most prestigious job titles...

4. Computer Systems Administrators
5. Astronomers and Physicists
6. Chemical Engineer
7. Chemist and material Scientist
8. Network and Data Communication Analyst
9. Computer Support Specialist
10. Dentist
Theres something strange about this, why are so many of the most prestigious job titles in IT? I am guessing if you told someone that you were a database administrator they would just say, "you do what now?"
Chief executive ranks 46... - cheech_sp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+74Computer Support Specialist is more prestigious than Computer Engineer and Computer Programmer?
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -7/+7897th Percentile for education (Master's degree). Pretty low on the others (wealth, income, job...). *Sigh*
- GawtMilk, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7484th percentile? That's $100,000 to $500,000. If that makes you feel poor, consider travelling out of the Hamptons once in a while.
- Boeing, on 10/11/2007, -7/+72I refuse to give any weight to a system that puts lawyers in the 84th percentile....
- sexualaj, on 10/11/2007, -7/+71Me 35%
Wife 80%
Starts thinking.? - cassholio, on 10/11/2007, -15/+74No selection for military (that i saw).
- 0crabby0, on 10/11/2007, -7/+64I did not see porn star on the occupation list.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+61Probably because your rampant consumerism leads you to live above your means.
Get a cheaper car and a cheaper apartment/home and you will feel like a king. Remember, wealth isn't measured by a Ferrari in the driveway, it's the numbers in the bank that count. - ButterBuddha, on 10/11/2007, -2/+48thanks for showing me how much I suck....
- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -1/+39Some of those rankings are a bit strange...
CEO < Special Ed Teacher? - user777, on 10/11/2007, -1/+38Bill Gate is only 87th percentile.
- AutoXer, on 10/11/2007, -5/+38"You need to contribute more to the relationship ;)"
No, he needs to get a divorce and take 1/2 of her 80%. lol I'm willing to bet that he'd still end up of on the losing side of the D. - SomaSynth, on 10/11/2007, -3/+36Computers/Math,
Database Administrator (3)
Mathematician (48)
Computer Programmer (64)
Interesting. That's what you get when you poll people that don't have a clue. - dclowd9901, on 10/11/2007, -7/+40"Personally, I think being in the Military is the most honorable job someone can hold."
It is a very honorable and noble effort, but it's not very prestigious. It doesn't require any schooling beyond a GED, and it doesn't pay that well. Hell, as of late, they've been recruiting people with criminal records. Where's the prestige in that? If I was a soldier, I'd be pissed to be working alongside some criminal. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -5/+37Divorce and spousal support FTW!
Oh wait, you're a man. Nevermind. :) - petroK, on 10/11/2007, -1/+28@ amfr
it is sad if you're a university professor and don't know that is what a "post-secondary teacher" is - narc, on 10/11/2007, -3/+29Did you know that per diem means per day ?
- grve, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25occupation 83% income: 3%
talk about ***** up, i need a new job :( - Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25Be sure to check out the other tabs.
The last one is an interesting commentary on human perspectives. Folks earning less than $50k/yr are more likely to feel that getting rich is accomplished via connections and being born wealthy. The richest people are the most likely to feel it comes from natural talent. - Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -4/+23""For Christ sake, you're the company computer guy""
Depends on the company. My company makes 100% of it's income off it's business and isn't possible without computers. It's not like we're helping idiots like you install media player, we running hundreds if not thousands of servers do things you could probably never even comprehend.
Let me give you a little tip. Computers run ALL Major Finical Exchanges (stocks, bonds, options, etc) and ALL Major Banks. If those computers aren't online then the entire country will eventually come to a halt. Oh and there is also all those nuclear and power faculties that won't run without computers. Also god forbid you get sick and have to go in for major surgery, I'm sure you'll think of the guy making sure all the vital life saving monitors are working as "just the computer guy". - Mabu, on 10/11/2007, -11/+30Let's be honest, people aren't in the military out of principal. Most are in the military because it's one of the only decent alternatives to their otherwise mundane, poverty-stricken or drug-addled lives. There are great people in the military, but the vast majority really didn't know what they wanted to do and the military will basically take anyone, and it's mostly composed of people who are or have been living below the poverty level.
The big joke is this notion that our society respects people in the military. Vets get shafted left and right after they sacrifice for the country. It's an illusion that government cares and the news demonstrates this every day after you strip off the shallow "support our troops" propaganda.
I'm not saying the military isn't a good career choice.. for many people it's a great choice. But it's not all honor and duty and everybody knows it. - Indyanna, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22"Apparently, wealth & education have nothing to do with intelligence."
They have nothing to do with intelligence. There are millions of people on this planet who are gifted, but do not have the opportunity to make the most of their potential. - brufleth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17You two are spitting up the population differently. One is using a bell curve and the other is using a linearly increasing wealth vs population...I think.
- Djchicken, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Dugg for Oscar Wilde quote.
- aolson1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17She needs to upgrade to a top fifth husband. :-P
- shandar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16It clearly says that the ranking is based on the respondents' opinion of jobs, not by their actual difficulty or salary. Most people don't know what makes a db admin different from a programmer, so they just go by what has the fanciest name (and surprisingly many still have a mental image that programmers are fat, bald people with glasses thick enough to stop a bullet, hiding in the dark, surrounded by monochrome screens). Could it be that database admins rank higher because the word 'administrator' sounds official and important?
- Aroundtheworls, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Don't worry, the internship will be over before you know it!
- wastern, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16That sucks for the engeneers. I watch movies all day at work and got ranked in the top 5th
- akinara, on 10/11/2007, -3/+17No selection for student or public administration, so neither my current occupation or future occupation..
- n8f8, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20the meek shall fertilize the earth
- Xeth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14Probably because there's a boatload of people who graduated from ITT and marked themselves as "EE" in the poll.
- datastorageguy, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21@cassholio
Military ought to be a class on it's own I would imagine? - westhe32nd, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Why is there no military/government category? The federal government employs more people than any company in the country. *sigh* Oh well. Being in the military is subjective anyway. We get paid about 40K-50K per year, but only pay tax on about 1/2 of it. Plus we don't pay health insurance, rent, food, utilities, education, etc.
- dalliance13, on 10/11/2007, -8/+21The upper class in America constitutes less than 1% of the population.
The lower, or "working class," is less than 20%.
You don't need an interactive web page to know that if you're a digg user, you're most likely middle class. - brufleth, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13I AM and engineer and it still puts me in upper middle class (69%) so...its a moderately good time to be an engineer.
- CorpT, on 10/11/2007, -1/+11What's the soup dejour?
That's the soup of the day.
Oh. - xnviews, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Class is an idea created by the wealthy to suppress the poor. Don't let the New York Times tell you your place. Your success in the world is what you make of your life and not how someone else defines it. A bus driver satisfied with his or her life is more successful than a stressed physician thinking of ending his.
- n8f8, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10@westhe32nd
Yeah, I was active 6 and reserves 3 in the USN. Propay + Sea Pay really added up. My wife is USN currently stationed in the Bahamas and makes like $100/day perdiem. Of course a cheeseburger costs $5 on the local economy, - Ukonu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10That actually reminds me of the "cognitive bias" article that was on digg a little while ago.
Rich people generally thinking they all got there with pure talent and poor people generally thinking rich people were lucky appears to fall under the "choice-supportive bias". - Rhino2, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12Top 5th in Occupation, Income and Wealth.
Bottom Fifth in Education to Middle (GED, never graduated) on Education.
... if it wasn't for computers, then I'd be eating cat food. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12The numbers beside each specific job isn't a ranking from what I can tell. Just some sort of index number or something.
- Digger008008, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10Dude, your net wealth is your assets minus you liabilities (AKA debt).
