- nepawoods, on 01/25/2008, -24/+183It's a skull and bones. So what? I'm pretty sure at least 99% of the people who might buy it don't associate it with Nazism.
- Buelldozer, on 01/25/2008, -10/+140Huh.
When did it become illegal in the United States to be a member of the Nazi party or sell Nazi paraphernalia? I thought only France and Germany had laws on that. - jphicks, on 01/25/2008, -33/+158That's a Nazi symbol? It's not one I've ever seen.
- dannytehmanny, on 01/25/2008, -8/+105i am a Jew who likes pirates and bought that shirt i feel weird now
- lemonslimes, on 01/25/2008, -2/+93It does sort of make you wonder what happens to the recalled food at Wal-Mart.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -10/+99Why the ***** does anyone care? And why the hell is Congress asking them to remove it? What happened to the first amendment?

- EatingPie, on 01/25/2008, -7/+62Wal-Mart isn't as much the culprit as you'd think. (Hear me out.) There are bound to be some stores that slip through the cracks and still have the shirts -- missed by employees, memo not caught, etc. It's possible. Also, Palmdale has some heavy-duty gang activity and it may be gang members work at the store and made sure they stayed on the shelves (pure speculation on my part obviously). Still, Wal-Mart needs to re-double their efforts in this case... and do it now!
Okay, Wal-Mart be damned or not, here's what really bugs me....
WHO MADE THE ***** SHIRT?? Nobody seems to know -- or have checked. The original blogger didn't check, but that was an admitted oversight on his part, probably due to shock at what he found. But now we have an article entitled "Wal Mart Nazi Shirt Watch WEEK 62" and still NOBODY HAS CHECKED WHO MADE THE SHIRT!! These are the real culprits. Sure it may have been accidental on the designers' part (googled the wrong skull), but to not even try to find out? There's no excuse for that. And THAT is who we should be talking about over and above Wal-Mart.
-Pie - jaybol, on 01/25/2008, -4/+59if you have ever been to palmdale you would know that they don't get news from the outside world so they are excused
- willster580, on 01/26/2008, -5/+58This is America: They should be allowed to sell it if they please.
- nsummy, on 01/25/2008, -8/+60While I'm not a big Wal-Mart fan, don't chastise the whole company just because one store out of thousands still has these t-shirts. That may be a Nazi symbol, but I've taken 4 history classes in college and I've never seen it before. If I can't tell then I guarantee you 99.9% of the idiots shopping at Wal-Mart can't tell either.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -4/+55Letter from congress demanding the removal of nazi t-shirts? How god damned ironic.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -14/+62Oh please. the t-shirt company just stole an image that was in the public domain rather than have to pay some guy to draw a skull. Perhaps it is a good thing. After all a symbol only has power if you provide it. Give it 20 years and people will say "Oh that stupid skull shirt," and "SS? What about social security?"
- JCPahl, on 01/25/2008, -6/+42Who the hell cares?
- jmpeagle, on 01/25/2008, -14/+48who cares? Hell I wouldn't care if it has a swastika on it because guess what..it means different things to different people. It's a Hindu religious symbol also. This is just a skull and bones shirt that is similar to a Nazi military division logo, so what?
- M4v3rIC, on 01/25/2008, -6/+39"I can't check the consumerist' link as its being blocked - but my guess its that its the 3rd SS Division insignia, the Totenkopf (Death's Head)"
your guess? Come on we're not stupid. MY guess is that you just read the Wiki. - ThorsSon, on 01/25/2008, -9/+41Yup. The t-shirt in question is a faded-looking red t-shirt with a worn-looking Totenkopf insignia emblazoned on the front.
Considering that the print on the t-shirt doesn't just *look like* the Totenkopf, it IS the Totenkpf, I can't begin to imagine that the designer of the t-shirt was unaware of the origin of the image. - sarge96, on 01/26/2008, -2/+33"Oh man, I can't think of a new shirt design"
"Dude, look at this awesome logo I found in some history book!"
"Oh yeah man! No one will ever know!" - fireantz, on 01/25/2008, -1/+32That link doesn't even go to anything. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_SS_Division_Toten ... is the correct link
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -6/+35The Death's Head symbol was worn by the members of the German Nazi SS,appears on these T shirts available at Wal mart
With a very simple width adjustment the two skulls fall almost perfectly into line. A Few Blogges have been thinking about the combination of the Totenkopf icon and the year 1978 which appears on those Nazi T Shirts' that Wal Mart sold.
The Totenkopf on the Wal-Mart T-shirt looks very similar to the divisional insignia of the 3rd SS Division Totenkopf. It's almost an exact copy. - lostmongoose, on 01/25/2008, -4/+32The Iron Cross is NOT a Nazi symbol. The particular cross in question has been used by many European nations and Orders since WELL before the SS came to power. Get your facts straight.
- Conwaysb0718, on 01/25/2008, -5/+33I dont see what the problem is. Dont like it, dont buy it. If enough people dont like it and no one buys it, Walmart stops carrying the brand. Isnt that how its supposed to work?
- deadbaby, on 01/25/2008, -2/+29There's a great excuse for it. Some designer saw an image and thought it would make a cool shirt. Probably had no clue what it meant. I certainly didn't and I consider myself more educated about that era than the typical person.
- dclaw, on 01/25/2008, -9/+36get a life people.... nobody really cares about this crap, except people that have to choose to sensationalize this stupid t-shirt. It's a T-SHIRT!!! 99% of the people that ever see this t-shirt will not know what it is, or care what it is.
Please people, digg this down and get a life. - NebCanuck, on 01/25/2008, -3/+27Most Nazi symbols were used well before. The question is more one of whether or not the symbol is NOW associated with the Nazis. Quite frankly, I've never seen the skull Wal-Mart is using, and so had I seen it I would have been completely oblivious to that fact. If I saw a swastika emblazoned on a shirt, on the other hand, I would think "Nazi" immediately, as I'm sure most people would.
The swastika was not "invented" by the Nazis, either. Still, to say that it wasn't doesn't mean you should plaster it everywhere. As for the Iron Cross, I would say it falls closer to the Totenkopf. I've rarely if ever heard the suggestion that the Iron Cross brings up thoughts of WWII. - cranium, on 01/25/2008, -3/+26If you don't like them, don't buy one, I know I wouldn't.
What's that? You don't want other people to have them either?
Who's the Nazi *now*? - Zera, on 01/25/2008, -11/+32What ever happened to free speech.... Are Nazi logos really not allowed to be sold here in the US??? WTF? Not that anyone would be buying it, but still, this isn't illegal, who the hell cares? The "letter from congress" was no more than 10 congressmen ASKING walmart to remove the insignia. Walmart said it didn't even know it was a Nazi symbol, (because noone recognizes that symbol)
Furthermore, the Consumerist takes a cheap shot by saying: "If they can't get rid of a simple tshirt, how good are they at recalling toys, defective merchandise, and dangerous food?"
C'mon, those things ARE a real problem. Some logo noone recognizes anymore that is perfectly legal is something that DOESN'T MATTER. The Consumerist is just picking on Walmart again. But, for some, writing blogspam beats getting a real job. - Incosian, on 01/26/2008, -3/+23It's not solely a Nazi symbol. Just as the Swastika has been in use since proto-Indian civilization and was appropriated by the Nazis, this particular design of skull and crossbones - itself a relatively ubiquitous concept - dates back to the days of Frederick the Great and his Prussian army.
- tdp301, on 01/25/2008, -9/+29This is a particular scroll and crossbones that looks very similar to the 3rd SS division symbol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_SS_Division_Toten ...
See the similarity? A normal skull and crossbones is nothing, but the one on the shirts looks just like the SS one. - curme, on 01/25/2008, -3/+23Note to self: America's public schools suck.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -1/+21Did it occur to you that he already knew in general what it was because this is a rehash of an ongoing issue, and so he just used wikipedia to get the right name to paste in his post?
Cause that's what I did. Even if I did somehow screw up the link. - DaviDaviDaviD, on 01/25/2008, -8/+28Someone did their homework to find out that was a Nazi symbol. I have been taking history for years and I have never seen that. Pirates and Nazi are the same thing now?
- inactive, on 01/26/2008, -5/+24Ok, now I see the point but, hey, that sure seems like a lot of work to go through to become offended:
Step 1: Research to find similar-looking forgotten insignia from the early half of the last century
Step 2: Get really offended and complain to have shirts pulled from a retail chain
Step 3: Hunt down one missed shirt among hundreds of others in one store among thousands of a giant retailer
Step 4: Get really offended again - bjornski, on 01/26/2008, -1/+20And the swastika was used by other religions and cultures long before the Nazis used it also.
- rficwizard, on 01/25/2008, -3/+21I missed the part where Ron Paul supporters wanted WalMart to be forced to remove these shirts. Which comment led you to believe that?
- Whackly, on 01/25/2008, -3/+20Yes you have. You just saw it. Consider yourself educated.
- Manchowder, on 01/25/2008, -1/+18I went to school out there. There is a substantial skin head market. This is the free market working.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -3/+20http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_SS_Division_Toten ...
- Hockey13, on 01/25/2008, -1/+17What are you talking about? Not everyone on Digg is a Ron Paul supporter and not everyone in these comments care if Wal-Mart sells them. Avoid the sweeping generalizations.
- ZenMojo, on 01/25/2008, -2/+18What makes you think Digg Libertarians outnumber the Digg Liberals?
- deadcrickets, on 01/25/2008, -6/+22Some people need to get over it in a major way. They refer to it as being a Nazi symbol despite it's prior use for pirates and so forth. I recommend that they also ask for the displayed symbols of American eagles be banned as the Nazis had such references and symbols (Nurenberg Nazi Eagle, Third Reich Eagle). Object to this? Then maybe you need to re-evaluate what is truly offensive and what is inane.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -12/+27Not really. Here's a question: Who does Wal-Mart help more, the rich or the poor?
They take a lot of goods everyone needs and put them in one location. They then sell them for less than you would pay elsewhere. For poor people who work all day and don't have time to shop around, Wal-Mart is great. If you're rich, and aren't one of the very few people who work at the top of Wal-Mart, it does nothing for you.
Our entire economy is based on the idea that people are greedy and want to make money. Get over it, comrade. - inactive, on 01/25/2008, -6/+21No it doesn't. These shirts were never recalled. Consumerist.com bitching about it is not a recall.
- StanleyKoolPrik, on 01/25/2008, -5/+20Censorship rules!
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -5/+19Rich people don't like to spend more for the same product, or run around wasting their time either. That is why wealthy people also shop at Walmart.
You don't gt to be rich by being stupid with your money or your time. - Rocketman1882, on 01/25/2008, -15/+29It kind of bothers me to see so many Ron Paul supporters and such on Digg declaring that they want their freedoms when they really want to limit capitalism like this... even if it isn't really a Nazi symbol, should companies be restricted by laws to keep them from selling a t-shirt? Apparently a lot of you think so. Just my two cents.
- inactive, on 01/25/2008, -6/+20The the crowds that are about 1000 times greater lining up to shop there when it opens.
- jayzer, on 01/26/2008, -0/+14I'm not sure why, but I remember when I was in 5th grade I ended up drawing swastikas all over one of my hands, in red ink, no less.
My teacher saw them and told me to go wash my hands, and that was that. This was back in 93/94 or so...I shudder at the thought of what sort of punishment a kid would get for doing such a thing these days. -
