- ats314, on 05/13/2008, -15/+54I'm confused. Most stuff in the picture is way negative; war, oil, McDonals, etc. Is he trying to say weed is as big of problem as these things or is he subtly offering a solution?
- ats314, on 05/13/2008, -0/+35not looking for diggs or anything, but I am wondering why a simple question gets dugg down so much. I was earnestly wondering whether most people thought the marijuana symbol was negative or positive.
- chatzimcfee, on 05/13/2008, -8/+2Neither. Why do you always have to dig so deep for symbolism? The man just likes him some Mary Jane.
- Echosphere, on 05/13/2008, -2/+1I would have to agree. Though also, Southern Hemisphere countries who illegally export large quantities of illegal drugs seem to think that that is all Americans spend their money on. He should have put a brand name perscription drug on there as we spend vast amounts more on those type of drugs in America today. His perspective though and I support him in it. Still looks a tad sophomore to me though.
- apothekari, on 05/13/2008, -9/+1If ya gotta ask bro you don't get it.
- Xander512, on 05/14/2008, -1/+16I could overthink it and give you a long explanation but, honestly, I think hes simply saying a lot of money goes towards drugs.
(nothing more) - cjflashman, on 05/14/2008, -9/+2Yeah ok.... Smoke weed and magically the power plants aren't polluting the earth. Smoke more then three ounces for an added bonus: The oil wells randomly start up and are gushing with oil...
- BoneStamp, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2People who use "then" incorrectly don't smoke enough weed.
- cjflashman, on 05/17/2008, -0/+1...I never used "Then" incorrectly.
All uses of "the" and "then" are as intended and proper.
Here's one thing I will say about drugs in general:
Guys who do it are usually stubborn as ***** about it and proud they smoke, Despite the lack of oxygen your causing yourself (Shut up. Smoke != air).
But girls however.... Lets just say I know somebody named "Keli" and she smokes cigs and drinks like no ***** tommorow. And she is nearly on honor roll.
That same class, seven other guys lay down and sleep through all of it, drooling on their desk and they have smoked pot ONCE and told me, It is addicting to them. Keli has quit smoking for six months over three times now.

* the domain ruled by an emperor or empress; the region over which imperial dominion is exercised
* a group of countries under a single authority; "the British empire"
* a monarchy with an emperor as head of state
* conglomerate: a group of diverse companies under common ownership and run as a single organization
* an eating apple that somewhat resembles a McIntosh; used as both an eating and a cooking apple

- mongo25, on 05/13/2008, -0/+8The average russian salary is 13,500 rubles/month. 13,500 rubles is roughly $568. The average yearly salary of Russians is roughly $6800. I highly doubt the new thing to do in Russia is wave around wads of Benjamins.

That's all fine and good, but the political message is ruined if you know your explosions. The inclusion of the Challenger accident is a jarring "Duh?" in the middle of it all. It has nothing to do with the value of the dollar, is barely a political statement (Pravda ran a single line about it when it happened, IIRC), barely polluted, and wasn't caused by hate or greed (well, maybe, but you really have to dig into it).

- michael43, on 05/13/2008, -3/+5You don't represent how the whole world sees America, and I suspect you've never traveled 100 miles from your birthplace. You get your information from the media, which "shock" is not above promoting an agenda that has little to do with the truth. I was in Indonesia once and a citizen there told me of a case where native Indonesians were paid by the newspapers to carry anti-American signs for the cameras and they couldn't even read English. Most of the people I met there envied me for being from America and could not have been nicer. I've been to Amsterdam, Singapore, Indonesia, and Hong Kong to name a few, and I've always been treated with respect. I'm not saying there are not militant anti-Americans, I'm just saying it's not as bad as the media portrays it most of the time.

- jessehadden, on 05/14/2008, -2/+2Gigantic floating hospitals, schools, construction factories... there is so much more (and better) we could be doing with all of these resources, than simply creating a massive killing machine based upon the spurious belief that every single problem can be resolved by establishing dominance by killing/maiming those who refuse to submit.
- diabloenfuego, on 05/13/2008, -7/+0Extraordinary Rendition, Bay of Pigs, Vietnam, Insurgency in Iraq, the CIA abandoning our 'secret' cold-war allies, favoring the 1% of the richest people in our country over everyone else, our ridiculous tenacity to cling to 'old' ways despite the fact that the world is changing around us (as it always has...don't get me wrong, tradition is one thing, but steadfast ignorance is quite another), our extreme reaction to all things-terrorism post 9/11, the fact that $ in this country tends to count more than votes, the cheapening of the media and spreading of propoganda...the list is endless. We have the most advanced military in the world. Why would you ever build such a contraption unless you were planning to use it, frequently? There's a lot of things we need to work on in order to restore our own desires and dreams...sadly a lot of it starts with how we spend our money, such as on scientific research like oh, I dunno Stem cells and bionics (of course, our leading bionic research is strictly funded by the military...go figure).

- diggrnumber1, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1if that's what the picture is about, then it is a complete failure. i see no depictions of the Fed or any foreign central banks, let alone the banks that led us into the subprime fiasco.
- Picaroon, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4I don't necessarily think so. I think it's more just a way of showing the things that are going on that are related to our currency and our way of life.
At least, that's how I saw it. If it's supposed to be a critique, they failed. - olivcarla, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5The point that they are trying to make is that they (the newspaper) show all the events happening all over the world and affecting the economy. I think the article here needs a bit of context. The newspaper focus on the global economy, this is why.

LiberalsSuckAssSucksDick - TicoTico, on 05/13/2008, -10/+20"Dugg down for being suspiciously anti-american!"
I can't stop laughing for this one, any critic or dissent is labeled as anti-american, you are so pathetic- rhawk301, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3Like what is "Anti American"? Does that mean if you question the government you are Anti-American? Does Anti-American mean you are "Anti-Jazz" or "Anti-Baseball" or "Anti-American Idol". Perhaps the people labeling the "Anti-Americans" simply have a failure of imagination. It is a human right to question your government, and according to the US founding documents it is actually a US citizens duty.
Quite frankly, I think this particular propaganda artwork targets fascism more than anything else. Who is going to rebut that America is deeply entrenched in Fascism? Take for instance the latest example of how Taser International got a court to force a doctor to retract the wording that a Taser caused a persons death. 50,000 volts going through someones body no longer is an issue, I guess we have evolved. Bring on the volts, I am ready.- dopplerdog, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2Technically speaking, the actual voltage doesn't matter - what matters is the current the device is capable of pushing through the body (and whether this is alternating or direct - alternating is much worse).
"50kV" does not GO through someones' body - electric current does. Static electricity (from shoes on a carpet) can go up to many kV, but the amount of current this can generate through a body is not significant.
That's not to say that I'm in favour of Tasers - I'm against them. I'm just clarifying a point.

Then I noticed the "LiberalsSuckAss". Man, that's some serious Ann Coulter ***** right there... Are you for real? I mean, can you really be that close minded? So insecure of your beliefs that anything somewhat resembling a difference in opinion is a threat that must be shut down immediately? Actually, our donations meant ***** compared to the amount of money our companies made/are making by taking occupancy over the small family owned businesses that were in the area. We rape and pillage. Natural disasters are much more beneficial to the bloodsucking Corporatocracy than anything else. You think our donations meant anything? Go to the areas and ask the people if any of that "donated money" is being put to good use for their people. You won't get a positive answer.

it was wasted money and lives. NASA engineers warned of the weakness in the O-Rings, an engineer at the manufacturer even warned of the problem. Fixing it would have cost over 1 million dollars and delayed the launch for months so the bean counters and NASA management chose to look the other way. As a result we lost a billion dollar piece of equipment, a group of astronauts that the US spent millions training over the years and much more.
The disaster also paralyzed the US space program for nearly a decade It is certainly a symbol of waste and greed of the highest order.- MacSuxWindozSux, on 05/13/2008, -0/+6I think that invading Iraq to prevent Saddam from being able to undercut OPEC by selling cheap oil was "waste and greed of the highest order".

- nubbz51, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1If this is just propaganda than why does it include a similar picture of the Euro and Yen? It's not like the artist is discriminating against one group of people. What's the point? You don't accomplish anything by changing something that is already beneficial. This piece is here to highlight every ship that is built, every soldier that is trained, is nothing more than theft from those in real need within the borders of the USA. Ontop of that, it isn't supposed to be a damn diagram of US fiscal expenditure. It's an advertising campaign meant to show where money is spent and how social and cultural events influence it. If things get bad enough, we will just have to go back to making our own ***** again. We will be able to afford less things maybe, but life will go on. Its just the high school/early college kids who get all worked up over nothing.
- TechCF, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Yes, it is great. I order things made in Europe sold in the US so it can be shipped back. It is sold cheaper there than here because of wages etc. Great :)
Not only does it drive US product sales, but everyone who sells in dollar and do not adjust their prices fast enough. - auzy07, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1thank you, its simple economics. undervalue our currency and make our goods look cheaper to the international market and in turn foreign goods are more expensive within the country. also it makes it so that we can pay off our debt now for cheaper (if we decide to do that, i doubt). economics is just a big circle and we go back to everything we've been through, just with new technology and new understanding on what happened. (all credit goes to Richard Grabowski, best damn econ teacher i've ever had {thanks for passing me :)} )

- Demean, on 05/13/2008, -7/+1Why is that dollar bill so big? Where is its bigger brother, Euro with Gummy bears and all that good stuff piled on top?
- fsjenkins2000, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Look below and there is the Yen and the Euro for your viewing pleasure
- Demean, on 05/13/2008, -0/+0Oh my, I blame it on that weed leaf at the top right corner.

- Ouze, on 05/13/2008, -12/+55while skilled technically, this vapid image does a pretty ***** job at conveying whatever message it is they are trying to convey. It's a cheap cash in of being provocative without actually delivering any discernible message. No surprise, then, to see all the mouthbreathing digg comments saying how breathtaking and stunning and brilliant it is.
- irgeorge, on 05/13/2008, -3/+8Well said.
- ltchimpo, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2Whoa whoa whoa.... you breathe out of your mouth too. You put your pants on one geekly, feeble leg at a time too. But yeah, cheap sensationalism.
- irgeorge, on 05/13/2008, -0/+1Breathe In through my nose most of the time though.

- godd4242, on 05/14/2008, -2/+5It's trendy to rag on others apparently. Eitherway, it's an advertising campaign, which apparently the hordes of mouthbreathers can't understand? Besides, I find it fairly meaningful. The world revolves around money, and this piece highlights that to some degree.
- auzy07, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2much much easier to be mean than nice...you piece of *****.
- mempko, on 05/14/2008, -0/+2haha, iget it, you are being ironic...haha. you make me laugh like a tickling monkey.
- auzy07, on 05/14/2008, -1/+2much much easier to be mean than nice...you piece of *****.
- andymci, on 05/14/2008, -2/+1"Read our newspaper to understand the power of money and what influences the world's economy." Seemed pretty clear to me. Big, controversial image to spark discussion and draw attention? Check. Tagline that refers to product being promoted? Check. I wouldn't call it propaganda or art with a meaning. It's advertising, plain and simple.
- STLMikey, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3I dugg it because thats a ***** cool picture. A breathtakingly stunning picture.

- d686, on 05/13/2008, -6/+26easy jackholes. it's not just "anti-american"... look at the euro and yen.
- mike17032, on 05/13/2008, -9/+5That just makes it anti-everything, an even more ***** point.
Yes we know idiot hippies think we could give up money and all go live in compounds and hug trees for a living or something, but thank ***** humans dont work that way. If we did, saber tooth tigers would still be eating us as free snacks.- dopplerdog, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1what exactly is your point?

- fsjenkins2000, on 05/13/2008, -0/+26I guess no one realized that the Yen and the Euro is right below it since there are no comments on those two.
- dpazar2, on 05/13/2008, -1/+1No I saw it...the Euro has a map in the middle that has "Arabs" and the Star of David on it...Why? Can anyone shine light on who the artist is and the reasoning behind these pieces?
- Echosphere, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0Possibly it has to do with the French riots and the increasing race issues with middle easterners in the EU. Btw, have you heard of the Nazis? They're back again as "Nationalists" in Germany, and they're spreading as jobs go to the former Eastern Block countries. *****, doesn't anybody read the news anymore?
- Avngr75, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Yeah, saw those. All the anime girls on the top left of the Yen gave me a chuckle.
- m4rk0551, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Look 4 comments above your comment...

The USA dollar isn't valued against gold, so it has to be valued against *something*, right? A lot of those 'somethings' are drawn onto the bill. - dopplerdog, on 05/14/2008, -0/+3doubleplusungood thoughtcrime

http://compuball.com/Inquisition/AynRand/danconias ...- godd4242, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3Dollars buy whips and guns. Money isn't inherently good or evil, just like people. It's all what you make of it.

- Yusami, on 05/13/2008, -2/+15I've seen so much anti-Insert Country/Corporation/People art since leaving high school and pursuing my art degrees...It's really boring, over-done, and lack-luster.
It's the same issues over and over again and it's done, 99% of the time, to be viewed and accepted...This saddens me as artists are supposed to be original and individuals.
That said it's ironic most of the artists I meet want a socialist nation (yes, I have been told "I want a socialist nation! What's wrong with socialism?" My answer? "No variety.")- candafilm, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4I agree, and it's in all forms of art now. You see it in music, television, books, video games and movies. There's raising awareness through art and then there is just beating a dead horse.
- ltchimpo, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4The sad thing is that people spend so many years in art school that they just come out as snobbish elitists that can only discuss art with other art grads who are on the same level of... vocab words. Seriously: if your parents allow you to attend art school make sure they can also line up a job for you when you're done, otherwise do something useful with your life.
- Yusami, on 05/13/2008, -0/+2I might sound like a dick here but a life of creating art and people wanting to see it or hear it is useful to me...Even if it means I have to live in some crappy hole in the wall downtown =) But I also want to be able to support my parents when they get to old to support themselves so I am also going for more than art, so I'm good with my two degrees.

- vexingmodstwo, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4Well, I guess a whole bunch of people now know what "Gazeta Mercantil" is... Pretty ironic, really.
- Lisztman, on 05/13/2008, -0/+3Yup. A newspaper not to pick up should I visit Brazil. :3
- dynamojoe, on 05/13/2008, -1/+0Yup. three million people reached, maybe three new subscribers total.
- theranbrig, on 05/13/2008, -2/+3wow...you move to South Korea and boy does the dollar change
- JointVenture, on 05/13/2008, -7/+8OMFG, the USA needs to restore its international reputation!
- nickymouse, on 05/13/2008, -12/+5Where is GW burning babies alive and eating them. What type of propaganda is this.
- rpfinley, on 05/13/2008, -26/+36Any article that uses the twin tower destruction for attention should be buried
- Step1Mark, on 05/13/2008, -1/+15Obviously 911 was a terrible thing but I don't think it even stands up to what we have done to other countries. So when they sent us a wake up call for our actions we increase our military presence? To me every innocent life was a tragedy doesn't matter where they were born.
- mempko, on 05/14/2008, -0/+39/11 had about 3,000 dead......Iraq has over a million. Se we do worse. Really, if we value all human life equally, then we are obviously morally worse.
- walugi, on 05/14/2008, -2/+10The twin towers was a drop in the ocean in terms of world tragedies. Only Americans think it's the worst thing to have happened in the last 10 years.
- abird, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1It's one of the worst things to happen in America in the last 10 years. Things hit a little harder when they're happening at home.
- dlite922, on 05/15/2008, -0/+1So if articles containing 911 should be buried, should we pay less attention to the war in Iraq....maybe not send any money there?
Let's bury the war in Iraq. Once you do that, i'll bury 911. Till then go F**** yourself, 911 happened, it affected the nation to this day, there's a freakin WAR going on RIGHT FREAKIN NOW!!! moron, I don't see how that's any less relevance.
This is not spam. I agree with you, people should hide keyword "911" to make their page popular, which talks about kittens, but If i didn't see 911 on this picture I'd be upset and bury it. seriously. - pappyblueribs, on 05/24/2008, -0/+0Yeah, I have to agree with that. The images are meant to be really deep, but are pretty knee-jerk in their approach. I almost laughed at the inclusion of the space shuttle explosion...how desperate can the artist get to include a tragedy that occurred so long ago?
And the responses above reek of American guilt. "We're bad, I'm bad, we deserved 9/11!" Might as well whip yourself or wear a hairshirt.
- Step1Mark, on 05/13/2008, -1/+15Obviously 911 was a terrible thing but I don't think it even stands up to what we have done to other countries. - frisk415, on 05/13/2008, -5/+13What the ***** is this thing trying to say? I know what they want to get at but that's not well done
- topace3000, on 05/13/2008, -1/+2Capitalism + America = dollar = EVIL
- olivcarla, on 05/13/2008, -2/+4Yeah, You really need a bit of context to understand that. For those who don't know Gazeta Mercantil, just appreciate the design, don't try to figure out any message from that (not even anti-American messages).
- mempko, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1Are you kidding me. Every paycheck I give about $250 dollars (half of tax payment to fed) to the department of defense. This picture makes perfect sense to me. Life is the damn context.
- odiego, on 05/13/2008, -2/+33Trust me, almost nobody in Brazil thinks about the USA like that.
- topace3000, on 05/13/2008, -0/+5Eh, a good number of people in the US think of the US like that, but I know what you mean. This thing is really more anti-capitalism than anti-US though, considering the EURO and Yen submissions on the same page.
- Pinkertinkle, on 05/13/2008, -10/+21Yeah the artist is a douche bag.
- krsone2424, on 05/13/2008, -14/+8I'm really speechless, this is an amazing piece of work
- ltchimpo, on 05/13/2008, -9/+3it is? it looks like rage against the machine's myspace page. It looks like a system of a down screen saver. It's utter tripe and if the artist was American we'd string him up by his foriegn ass. You wanna make art says bad bout merica, ur in the wrong ***** for that. We got laws here, cant go saying writin and doin as you please- we gots laws!
- taiakpun, on 05/13/2008, -0/+4Actually you smart spelling yankee you - in your pathetic excuse for a country you have laws that allow you to write and do as you please, as long as they do not infringe on any other person's rights and freedoms. There is a thing called freedom of the press and since this ad comes from the press, the artist would not have been hung up. Why all the negativity anyways? The ad is not dissing the US, it is in fact pointing out very serious and tragic happenings in the last century. Wow I know the US is hated by many now, but the paranoia and defensive stances taken by the US citizens are really astounding! Get off your high horse and just appreciate something that obviously took some time to create.

- godd4242, on 05/14/2008, -1/+3What's wrong with being anti american? It has its virtues.
