- ChrisAllen, on 03/23/2008, -1/+5So where would Vancouver and Toronto be on your country list?
Wow.... - Gregfr, on 03/23/2008, -15/+5That's because Canada is not a real country.
- twistaspliff, on 03/23/2008, -2/+9Are all people from France as dumb as you?

- N00F, on 03/23/2008, -1/+7Seriously, we're only the second largest Soverign country in the world.
- one1plus1one, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3Actually, we're the "second largest country in the world" by land area only.
In terms of population Canada has one of the lowest in the world. There are as many people in mexico-city as there are in all of Canada!
Essentially, like it or not, Canada has little cultural influence, or political impact on the world-stage except for having unleashed Celine Dion, maple-syrup, ice-hockey, 6 percent alcohol beer, and cheese-fries (otherwise known as "poutine") upon the world.
And that's exactly why I live here in Canada, and am never leaving.
- one1plus1one, on 03/24/2008, -0/+3Actually, we're the "second largest country in the world" by land area only.
- ferory, on 03/23/2008, -1/+6Canada's gas station prices go up and down 10 cents over the course of a day. What do you think would happen if the pump price at an American gas station fluctuated 38 cents (the price per gallon equivalent) in a day?
- KoopaTroopa, on 03/23/2008, -1/+2not so!
- MacBandit, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3The imperial gallon is 1.2 US gallons and the Canadian dollar is worth pretty much 1 to 1 with the US dollar so that would be at most a fluctuation of 12 cents per day in the US which I do see happen a couple times a week where I live.
- dtox, on 03/24/2008, -0/+4The US gallon is 3.785 Litres. So when the Canadian price fluctuates by $0.10/L the price per US gallon equivalent would be about $0.38
- one1plus1one, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1"What do you think would happen if the pump price at an American gas station fluctuated 38 cents (the price per gallon equivalent) in a day?"
Answer: someone would get shot. It's the USA afterall.

- Vazelos, on 03/23/2008, -12/+65Norway is the most expensive one on the list yet it is the best place to live in (UN report). An example of how oil revenue should be used.
I remember watching an interview of a politician in the government of Norway saying that not only the have done everything they ever wanted in the economy from oil revenue but also they are saving some crazy amount for what he called 'a rainy day'.
I have maximum respect for this country.- argaen21, on 03/23/2008, -25/+12No offense to Norway or anything, but I'll take smog, high gas prices, no healthcare and higher crime rates in exchange for the california sun anyday. :P
- Dundasbro, on 03/23/2008, -9/+7I would think that the enjoyment of sun would be removed by large amounts of smog blocking up the sun and giving you lung problems, getting stabbed during a carjacking due to higher crime rates and not having the health care to ensure that you actually live. Living probably helps the enjoyment of the sun.
- acitcratnA, on 03/23/2008, -4/+7In reality many people in California are still alive.
Also, today was sunny. I enjoyed it.- yohan, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Lol, you didn't go outside. Don't joke with us.

- DrTiCool, on 03/23/2008, -4/+4I can agree except for whaling
- sn0w, on 03/23/2008, -0/+5This is incorrect. All the gas that is sold here in Norway is refined in Norway. The primary reason for the high price is purchasing power and a high level of tax.
- heavystone, on 03/24/2008, -1/+3I find it funny that Americans say that about Norway, when right next door to them is Canada which has the same morals...if not better.

- stewartallyn, on 03/23/2008, -0/+7Concerning the last picture...which is great...looks like there is more gas (and beer) in those two guys than will ever be needed in the car.
- sjbdallas, on 03/23/2008, -7/+46It should be noted: the price of gas comes from shipping and refinery costs as much as from the cost of oil. We pay less here than europe because we have more refineries in the US to process. They don't have as many (or any at all i believe) in europe so it all has to be refined elsewhere and shipped in.
Saudi and Iraq of course can go right from the ground into a refinery and into the tank at pretty low cost. If we could get oil out of the shale in colorado, and out of the sand in canada at a decent cost, AND were allowed to build more refineries we'd be under a buck a gallon too.- h0ser, on 03/23/2008, -6/+10its still over a buck a litre in Alberta Canada. They have huge refineries and oil reserves. It's cheap in venezuela because Chavez kicked the oil companies out and took back their natural resource.
The oil companies are the ones ripping everyone off.- SirMolle, on 03/23/2008, -5/+3
Agreed!
The President of the Us OFFERED Free of CHARGE the property from old Military Bases!
The Oil companies came up with a zillion excuses why they didn't want to build refineries.. but the real reason was they couldn't gouge us if their were a lot of refineries! - Scheissen, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Chevez pockets the money from the oil sales. Not even a socialist could agree to give up all that money when in he's in charge of it.
- Fxer, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Oil prices in Venezuela have always been low, with pro and anti-US governments.
- SirMolle, on 03/23/2008, -5/+3
- hughesj919, on 03/23/2008, -2/+8Uhh thats wrong. You pay more in Europe because you export it all because there isn't much demand in Europe. Europe produces much more oil than they require (--the North Sea for example). There are refineries in Europe (Conocophillips has one in Lincolnshire, Chevron in Pembroke for example). The refineries are where the oil is at. Crude found in Europe isn't shipped to the US to be refined. Anybody could tell you thats not cost effective.
- rancor, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Have a look at this: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/ene_oil_pro-ener ...
If you sum up the production in Europe (Russia included) and do the same for all countries in North America you will see that the amount produced is about the same for both continents; hence the price difference is not due to shipping and refinery costs.- sfrederiksen, on 03/23/2008, -4/+2Russia included with Europe? Let's include China, Japan, and Korea as well!
- rancor, on 03/23/2008, -1/+6It seems that you don't know that a major part of Russia is located in Europe, in fact 40 % of Europe is Russian territory (source: wikipedia).
But the point is that the part of Russia that is located in Europe produce a significant amount of oil. So even if you only include the European part of Russia (as you should) the amount oil produced will be about the same for both Europe and North America.
- rancor, on 03/23/2008, -1/+6It seems that you don't know that a major part of Russia is located in Europe, in fact 40 % of Europe is Russian territory (source: wikipedia).

- blackjack75, on 03/23/2008, -0/+22I am afraid you are all (partly) wrong. The biggest cause for the difference in Europe is TAXES. The vast majority of the price of a liter of gas here is the taxes.
That's french but applies to many european countries:
http://img318.imageshack.us/img318/7673/evolutionp ...
(blue is the normal price, yellow is what added of taxes)
As you can see it exploded over the previous years. It's the usual "it's bad for your and the environment so we'll tax it more". The state makes a living out of cigarettes, alcohol and gas.- Ryan0617, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4Agreed, here in the Uk its about 75%(Not sure on the exact figure but its only beaten by norway i believe)
- darylyounge, on 03/23/2008, -5/+0What the ***** are you talking about? If you could get oil out of the sand in Canada. Have you ever heard of Alberta or Saskatchewan. You ***** moron, were giving you the ***** for practically nothing.

- mrhedges, on 03/23/2008, -1/+3Uh, excuse me? I was commenting on the "better than a mirror" link at gadling.com, which has a WHOLE paragraph of text to go along with it claiming that Toronto has $3.28/gallon gas. Which it doesn't. The other links are more accurate. So please, ***** off, and think before posting four letter acronyms.
- acitcratnA, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2I was referring to the date, which says June 26th of last year. Seriously, RTFA.
- mrhedges, on 03/24/2008, -1/+1Seriously, STFU. The person was trying to post a link referring to the current prices of gas, and I respond describing an inaccuracy. The fact that it was June 26th of last year or not, the prices of gas are no longer (nor were) $3.28/gallon. If you're going to say "better than a mirror" and have a link that has data over a year old, who gives a ***** how someone corrects the user?
- acitcratnA, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1I didn't say "better than a mirror". The "better than a mirror" links to the dugg image which includes the article itself. The fact is, you were wrong and still are wrong. Just give up.
Also, you say that the average gas price was never $3.28/gallon. How can you even back that up; it seems pretty accurate to me.

I live in Japan and I pay 148 yen per liter, which is about $5.63 dollars per gallon, yet each of these charts list it as somewhere around $4.10~$4.50 a gallon. BIG difference from the reality I face at the pumps.

- Steyr47, on 03/23/2008, -5/+4That's definitely not prices by the gallon. Prices in Italy are about 4.50Euros per litre, which comes out to $5.40 that they said it was. If it was by the gallon, this price would be above 20$.
- xNIBx, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2I dont really think that in Italy it's 4.5euros per litre. Litre < > Gallon. It is more likely it costs 4.5euros per gallon.
- dagamer34, on 03/23/2008, -0/+15People tend to forget that the US isn't to thoughtful about public transportation as it is in Europe or Asia. If you need to get from point A to point B, you really DO need a car most of the time in the US.
- xNIBx, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3Americans need to realise that you cant get lower oil prices. Oil is running low and it is only going to get more expensive. Also the US dollar is plummeting so countries like China want to get rid of as many dollars as they can and one way to do that is by buying all the oil they can store(because oil is still sold in US dollars). This is also greatly affecting the oil prices. Maybe if the US economy doesnt collapse and the US dollar becomes fairly secure, the oil prices will drop again.
What you can demand from your government is better public transportation. So instead of whining about oil prices, how about you demand some decent public transportation? Also how about using smaller/lighter cars? How about living closer to your job? Americans like to whine about oil prices(which their government cant do anything about) because they dont want to adapt. - likeyehokwhatev, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4In all fairness, cities in Europe are much more compact compared to American cities. LA for example, has a rail transit system, but from my understanding it's hardy used because it isn't practical in such a large, sprawling geographic area. I'm all for public transit (I use it every day and don't own a car), but in most of American cities/suburbs, unfortunately, I don't see widespread use as practical.
- thoughtudied999, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Mad Max FTW!
- kahrytan, on 03/23/2008, -2/+3Gas prices in Hawaii are $3.43-$3.50
- monsterenergy, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Maybe at Costco, elsewhere its easily above 3.50, and thats on Oahu. Other islands are worse. In Hilo, its about 3.70+, and places like molokai are almost 4.00. It's bad.
- bmson, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4Iceland has the highest gas prices in the world and they are not on this list.
And these are old prices...- MrSlumberjack, on 03/23/2008, -0/+6You don't even need gas in Iceland. You just kinda slide around.
- AresDiggs, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3No thats Greenland..
- Arcesius, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Save for their cars, aren't they just about completely off of oil?
- MrSlumberjack, on 03/23/2008, -0/+6You don't even need gas in Iceland. You just kinda slide around.
- apc3161, on 03/23/2008, -1/+10Venezuela, $0.17? Jeeze, apparently South America is hell struck on staying poor. Rather than not subsidizing their gasoline, they could be exporting, making an insane amount of money (which would probably bring more utility than just having subsidized gasoline) yet they choose not to...sigh...
- LocoMan, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3No president wants to risk rising it, I guess.
One of the big causes of the last big violent social uprising we had here in Venezuela was that the government was raising the gas prices like 2 or 3 cents (don't remember how the dollar/bolivar exchange rate was back then) over a period of few months (among several other unpopular economic measures being implemented), and that eventually ended with the trial (after 2 coups attempts) and ousting of the then president Carlos Andrés Perez.
Actually, one of the functions of the national guard on the borders is to check for gasoline smugglers, since it has became a big business to buy gasoline in Venezuela then sell it in Colombia... it has even come to the point where near the borders and in popular tourists destinations to have gas stations where you have to present an ID card, and foreigners get much more expensive gas.- apc3161, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2That sucks for you guys. It just seems if you sold your gasoline at regular prices, it would do a lot more good for the people of Venezuela than low gas prices by themselves can bring about.
- formergthing, on 03/23/2008, -1/+8Uhh.. Venezuela exports a ***** of oil to the U.S. - about half of what they produce, actually. That's something like 4,000,000 barrels of oil a day. In fact, Citgo and Valero gas stations are completely supplied by Venezuelan oil.
- apc3161, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2I said gasoline, not oil buddy. And if they are selling gasoline at $0.17 a gallon, all that means is they could be refining less oil in Venezuela, and exporting it to make money.
- Soytaco, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1Easy there, buddy

- Elpea, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Right, because all of South America is in Venezuela??
- ZeusIncarnate, on 03/24/2008, -0/+1I am a Brit who is living in Venezuela, and so I know both sides of the spectrum well. Venezuela may have cheap petrol, even though it does export a lot, but it is rare to find milk, cheese, even bread at a supermarket. Chavez has gotten a lot of money from oil, Venezuela has one of the largest surpluses in the world, but he cannot provide even basic products to the citizens. Half the country is far too poor to own a car anyhow, so the fact that one can buy cheap petrol is a very small consolation. In Britain, petrol is expensive, but a very good public transportation system makes it possible for the less fortunate to get around. And as for comments on taxes, British petrol is taxed 300%. Anytime Gordon Brown needs more money he will take it from the oil companies. Chavez cannot afford to even slightly anger the companies that support his country.
- LocoMan, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3No president wants to risk rising it, I guess.
- JasonMath, on 03/23/2008, -5/+12Actually, if the U.S. really wants to reduce it's "addiction to oil", higher gas prices are good. Look at Europe - they have had gas prices for well over $4 a gallon (and even over $5 a gallon in many spots) for many years now, and look what you see people driving there - lots of tiny cars, with no Hummers in sight. The government should repeal all fuel economy standards and impose a $1-$2 a gallon fuel tax. That way, people can choose to drive gas-guzzling cars (and auto companies can continue to make them), but it will be economically smarter for most people to buy small, fuel-efficient cars.
- inetiatic, on 03/23/2008, -11/+1Yeah because they sell their oil in gallons, right.
- septicmadman, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3It was adjusted from litres moron.
- Aphelion, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2He wrote that whole comment about prices and addiction to oil and all you had to say was the unit of measure he used?
- CoolBluReason, on 03/23/2008, -0/+1If only the government were run by economists.
- dygel, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3I'd be fine with a solution with that if we put that $1-2 petrol tax into subsidizing a major overhaul of the American railway system. I want to live to see a future where I don't have to fly to get from the east coast to the west coast, I can just hop on a high speed train and be within taxi distance of wherever I want to be within a few hours.
- justinx0r, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4That's a terrible idea. That's only going to hurt poor people who are already facing economic hardship because of our inept government.
- chopperrockets, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3your an asshole try working for a living! you know drive to work cause their is no train. oh thats right you one of those people that thinks we should ALL live in filing cabinets and work at the broom factory.
- PS3Camaro, on 03/24/2008, -0/+2Yes... lets force people who struggle tremendously already with the current gas prices into buying new cars...
- inetiatic, on 03/23/2008, -11/+1Yeah because they sell their oil in gallons, right.
- havokdu, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Looks like the graphic was not inflation adjusted.
Prices went up in most places including Venezuela. - TheUserFactor, on 03/23/2008, -1/+2Owned by the Digg effect. I wish people would at least mirror these stories on something other than a $5/month GoDaddy blog.
- Soave, on 03/23/2008, -0/+10Bottled water and ice cream cost more than gas.
- AllenHSmilden, on 03/23/2008, -4/+3How many miles per gallon do they get you?
- Soave, on 03/23/2008, -1/+4None, which says even more about how relatively cheap gasoline is.
- AllenHSmilden, on 03/23/2008, -4/+3How many miles per gallon do they get you?
- heliox, on 03/23/2008, -0/+10Buried as inaccurate it is from June 2007 !
- Doomsan, on 03/23/2008, -0/+3It's sickening that here in Chile gas costs than in almost all of USA, giving that here the income is much much lower.
- formergthing, on 03/23/2008, -0/+2Cheaper prices come from leverage and negotiation. If you are using as much oil as the US, then you have the leverage you need, next you'll just need a government who can strike good deals, keep taxes relatively low, and be willing to take what they can't get given to them.
- krazydl, on 03/23/2008, -0/+4I thought NY was bad..... London is ridiculous. @.@
