- mecharabbit, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3All we have to do is ride out the downward part of the cycle, and we'll be back up there again. Unless Bush does something stupid like invading Iran, that is.
- BetterOffEd, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4Keep telling yourself that and see what happens.
Once China gets enough guts to actually call in the note on us, we're done for... - fasda, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2They can't we have a contract with fix payments they can't call it in

- Rondizzler420, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1America's gonna keep falling. Thats my bet.

- nikeboy32, on 06/28/2008, -0/+5I agree, the States dropped from 1 to 4 in a year. Interesting article though.
- chicoer2001, on 06/28/2008, -1/+21Why cant Forbes put its list on one page
- mojaam, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1I know right. Probably just to generate more pageviews I suppose.

You make your tax-return about 6months. Me make it in 6 minutes in the Internet.
We have electronic-ID-card - so you can give signature over the internet. We also have solusion to give signature over mobile;) That is success to be small country. It's easy to implement new things.

- WikiEasy, on 06/28/2008, -7/+1***** list. Look around at current innovation (main catalyst for wealth). Where do they come out of mostly? The U.S.
When was the last time you heard anything innovative coming out of the other top 3?- Rikkochet, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Look at the innovation coming out of Israel, too - they're a technological superpower.
But that's not what this article is about - it's about how 'friendly' the government is to growing businesses.
Face it, the US isn't that great anymore - there are ridiculous amount of red tape and applications to do anything. Having worked for a company that tried desperately to go public in the US for years and one now that is trying to grow a US office, it's a nightmare. It's a huge economy and that's why it's worth setting up business there, but it's hardly friendly to business. - nick111, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3Says he writing on a system running linux, php, mysql
I don't think this is a matter of non-US innovation, it's a matter of one-little-corner-of-US (aka: you) ignorance.
You need to get out more.
- Rikkochet, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3Look at the innovation coming out of Israel, too - they're a technological superpower.
- thorseth, on 06/28/2008, -1/+10Denmark ... "lower taxes" I must have what forbes is smoking. We just made the #1 for highest taxes in the world: 40%-60% income tax 25% sales tax. But then again we do get free health care and college. Which gives a healthy and educated population... a goal other countries might want to pursue.
- randumbusername, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7im sure they are referring to taxes on business
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tax_rates_around_the_ ... - jo21, on 06/28/2008, -7/+2educated population my butt, u guys voted for bush twice ;)...healthy = FAT ? more like unhealthy.
i am being to general about that, but seriously his bitching was annoying.- willi, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4WTF are you talking about Denmark is not US!
- nick111, on 06/28/2008, -0/+3I was talking to a Swedish guy about this yesterday - he said the high tax thing is actually a myth - because there is so much else that doesn't need to be paid for because it's considered a basic human right.
So what do you want? "Freedom" that puts 1/100 of your population in prison because the only value they have in the laissez-faire, privatise-everything society is to the privatised prison industry?
I'm actually seriously considering moving to Southern Sweden... at least in part because the rental prices are about 1/2 what they are in UK/NZ/AUS - which is where I normally live. - n0gnuz, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3Not sure I'm ready to socialize everything in this country (US), but it *is* interesting that our government chooses to subsidize failure (sloth, unplanned pregnancies, anti-assimilationism, foreign wars), and tax success (labor, industriousness in general). If they are going to take 30% of my salary by force, I'd rather they subsidize something we want more of (like education) instead of things we want less of (e.g., war and corporate welfare programs).
PS: I did try to support Denmark through the Muhammad cartoon debacle, but I really can't drink Carlsberg. No offense.
- randumbusername, on 06/28/2008, -0/+7im sure they are referring to taxes on business
- frakkingtoaster, on 06/28/2008, -1/+3I ***** hate Forbes.com. It's either their ***** slideshows or their gazillion paragraphed articles.
- handsanitizer, on 06/28/2008, -0/+16Nokia is a Finnish company.
- cyberdork, on 06/28/2008, -0/+12I almost laughed out loud when I read:
"What do LEGOs, Nokia and 18th century political economist Adam Smith have in common? All three show why Denmark has become the best country in the world for business."
Just shows how little research the author put into his article. And here I was thinking that everyone knows Nokia is a Finnish company. - MrDo, on 06/28/2008, -3/+1Well they have build a r&d center in Copenhagen
- wenomspitta, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1Yeah and probably the founder's grandmother was Russian...

- peosteve, on 06/28/2008, -1/+1I find it funny that their comment for Canada is "As export volumes fall amid the downturn in the U.S. economy and a strengthened Loonie, the Canadian government is pursuing a free-trade pact with Colombia just as support in the U.S. Congress waffles.". Wow, my government is thinking real big here...jeez, no wonder we're number 7...the big news is that we're gonna do free trade with cocaine central.
- Erunas, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2I like all the faults in this article, it's easy to see that this was written by a three-year-old who has not done his/her homework.
- johanneshint, on 06/28/2008, -0/+4yay, go go Estonia.
- willi, on 06/28/2008, -1/+2I'm quite surprised that Denmark is no. 1. Denmark is a nice to place to live in, but I know that some of my friends have move their companies out of the country because of the high tax.
- Rudegar, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0not high company tax
but high income tax and sales tax mean that companies have problems getting people from other countries to go here and work
thats a reason why they may move
- Rudegar, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0not high company tax
- hamidious, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1It's good to see that Saudi Arabia moved up, this at least means our governements are starting to do somethings right.
Still I think Forbes was too generous, the beauracracy here is still a nightmare. - wenomspitta, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1just in case somebody doesn't know this one - doingbusiness.org
there are others like this too, just an example - piotr84, on 06/28/2008, -0/+1"anti-bureaucrat leaders like president Lech Kaczynski"
Actually Lech Kaczynski is a believer of state control. We have big problem with bureaucracy (for example its illegal to send invoice by email in pdf). Poland is attractive because has cheap and well-educated man-power.
Beside president in Poland doesnt govern. He has only veto right. - kd1s, on 06/28/2008, -0/+2If you note, all the places mention have favorable tax climates for business though in a few cases like Sweden they're actively working to dismantle the social programs.
- binorgog, on 08/07/2008, -0/+1*****!! I hate when i hover over a link, see forbes.com and know it's going to drive me crazy to even think about going.

- rontowns25, on 06/30/2008, -1/+1It's unbelievable the effect the gas crisis is having not only on American households, but small businesses as well. In the US especially, the costs of manufacturing products are skyrocketing, leaving small businesses to pay the difference. For small business to overcome these challenges they have to compensate for it by doing more business and creating more bandwidth in their sales. For much of America, increased productivity leads to increased compensation. Here's how to counter all of these turbulent external factors....
