- eastwood24, on 10/29/2009, -3/+47A little insight:
In order for the twentysomethings to afford these houses, the prices will have to continue to drop. To clarify, the baby boomers, the wealthiest and largest age group that currently lives in these types of houses, are beginning to retire add relocate into smaller retirement homes means that adjusted for inflation prices must drop significantly in order to attract younger people that no longer make the salaries necessary to purchase at the current prices.
You gotta love the short-sightedness that was the housing boom. - joculator, on 10/30/2009, -2/+39Where the hell in Queens can you get a 2BR for $170k??? Even if it's tiny.
- trafficlight, on 10/30/2009, -0/+32This graphic is about what the national average price would buy you in that particular city. Don't read it as being the city/state average.
Didn't it tip you guys off that every price was $175k? - pathouston22, on 10/30/2009, -5/+25Compare the house and lot sizes to Houston and California.
Houston: $170,000 for 3100 square ft and 7400 square ft lot
California: $175,000 for 672 square ft and 5000 sqaure ft lot
Reason #4486037 not to live in California. - jattea, on 10/30/2009, -0/+18When did they move Washington DC to West Virginia?
And Bronx and Queens to upstate NY? - onionrings, on 10/30/2009, -1/+16ummm false? this is so far off for east coast cites that it is not even funny.
- niradg, on 10/30/2009, -0/+14exactly. these supposed "averages" are laughable.
- jhbarr, on 10/30/2009, -0/+11Check his profile. He lives in Oklahoma where $175k gets you a 2000-3000 sq foot home, not a starter property. Most 20 somethings don't need a home that big.
- oblivious87, on 10/30/2009, -0/+11@jhbarr - Most people don't need a house that big
- mparker21311, on 10/30/2009, -0/+10Texas is looking more appealing by the day.
- kelmaster1, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9This is based on the national average price. The average price in LA is probably $500,000...
- ClarkWells, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9Its not Average for "Detroit"... The info-graph is meant to show what you can get for around $175,000 -which is the average cost of a single family home in the US- in different parts of the country.
It just so happens that Detroit sucks so bad, you can get a Mansion there for 175k - sb66, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9But its in Buffalo...
- Raoulduke310, on 10/30/2009, -0/+9really? so those are our only two options? Texas or California?
- Bloodwine, on 10/30/2009, -1/+96 acre lot in St. Louis? maybe on the fringe with a very large commute.
- sb66, on 10/30/2009, -4/+11yeah but then you have to live in Texas with a bunch of wierdos who ask what church you belong to, and love Bush
- gleongelpi, on 10/30/2009, -1/+8This kind of article produces the misinformation that leads a lot of people without knowledge about housing to postpone buying because they are unable to find the deal or even something reasonable. Housing which one can buy for less than $200 per Sq. Ft. will not be acceptable to most Americans and at less than $150 is is mostly junk. Where oh, where are thes houses? I am not saying that you cannot find numerous houses for $100 or less per Sq. Ft., but they all will need extensive work.
This article is absolute crap. - rdldr1, on 10/30/2009, -1/+8Why the hell is having 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms "average" in Detroit?
- kelmaster1, on 10/30/2009, -1/+8Except now you're living in Northern Alabama... which is cool for those who like it there.
- Raoulduke310, on 10/30/2009, -1/+7Maybe in Deepest Darkest Jamaica, near the LIRR
- m0llusk, on 10/29/2009, -1/+7The picture used to represent the Oakland condo is the ugliest of all the many new buildings there.
- sonician, on 10/30/2009, -2/+8I wish housing prices were that low here in Canada! Most cities here are 50-200% higher than the US National Average. http://www.livingin-canada.com/house-prices-canada ...
- 2GMario, on 10/30/2009, -1/+7Here in Buffalo, NY - I closed on my first house just this last July - 1700sq ft for $117k.
I find it amazing how much some people pay for housing in the bigger cities. The area my house is in is very nice (village type area) - taxes aren't bad for being NY (3500 / year) and the schools are good.
A lot of people I know are buying houses now cause of the government incentives - I already got my $8k (had my tax person amend my last years taxes) - turned around and put it right into my kitchen remodel (doing it ourselves it only cost me $6k and I even got granite countertops out of it) - bovilexia, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6Are these the average prices for 1990? I don't think you can live in a cardboard box in D.C. for 180.
- niradg, on 10/30/2009, -6/+12this is laughably inaccurate. for many big cities, the houses they chose are in the absolute worst neighborhoods.
- niradg, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6same goes on the west coast
- mike23w, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6San Francisco median home sale price: $662,000 according to dataquick.
http://www.dqnews.com/Charts/Monthly-Charts/CA-Cit ... - WhiskeyLemur, on 10/30/2009, -1/+7Texas is a fun place, especially once you get into the big cities. If you're looking for the *real* buckle on the Bible Belt, you're talking about Oklahoma, Arkansas, etc.
- wolfing, on 10/30/2009, -0/+6Avg house in Philadelphia and Minneapolis are 4/1... 4 bedrooms 1 bathroom wtf??? do they have turkish baths there?
- djm19, on 10/31/2009, -0/+6Id rather be poor in LA than rich in Houston. After all, life is about living, not just spending money. Environment is very important. Location, Location, Location.
- dhice, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5Huntsville basically.
- Super6, on 10/30/2009, -0/+5In Orlando 175k might get you a 4/2 if you live out in the uninhabited part but definitely not the 5/3 they show.
- Elranzer, on 10/30/2009, -1/+6Condos... aren't those like apartments where you gotta pay both mortgage AND rent ("maintenance fees") at the same time as well as property taxes?
- bmcnally, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4That's what you can buy with the median housing value of $174k (ish). It's not the average house.
- donotclickjim, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4This article is so inaccurate its not even funny. It reminds me of those annoying web ads about getting a 500k loan and only paying $788 a month. Something just isn't right about these house sizes and prices. I wish I could find houses that looked like those for the prices they are claiming.
- daEvan, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4It's accurate.
- mparker21311, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Looks like the banks are going to own a lot of useless homes.
- BatterseaPS, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4Wow, I'd gladly take the 2 bedroom house in Queens for $175,000. Can someone link me to such a listing in an average (not too swanky, not too shabby) neighborhood?
- compulsive1, on 10/30/2009, -0/+4I live in a 4 bedroom 1800 sq ft home with a nice yard and detached 2 car garage that would sell for about 120-130k today. That works out to about $70 per sq ft. The house is in good condition- no repairs needed to move in and live. It's not major city- but not exactly boondoggles either. Neighborhood is safe and unemployment here is around 7.5% right now- below national average.
I could find an identical home in the suburb for 200k, but feel no need to do so.
So, no it's not all crap that's affordable and on the market.
(Pennsylvania) - Jeembo, on 10/30/2009, -1/+5Agreed. Same for L.A. My Aunt's 2BR, 1200 or something sq ft rambler in Torrance just got appraised for $750k.
Furthermore, there's no way in hell you're going to find a 4BR in Minneapolis for $175k unless it's insanely dilapidated or it's in the extreme ghetto. - Atario, on 11/01/2009, -0/+4Yes, please, don't come here to California. Especially if you're from Texas.
- Chewie67, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3Apparently the folks at Mint don't realize that Queens isn't a suburb of Albany, and the Bronx isn't near Rochester.
- Raoulduke310, on 10/30/2009, -1/+4Actually, MATH4RETARDS, the article was about MEDIAN price, not average price...there is a difference, Will Hunting.
- iamnotcreative, on 10/30/2009, -1/+4I think patHOUSTON22 might be a little biased
- gleongelpi, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3Those numbers are not real. the article does not indicate the truth.
- xenuxenuts, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3I'm not a 20 something, but they have MUCH larger debts from college than baby boomers did.
- loobis, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3This is "Detroit", as in "City of". This is not West Bloomfield, Plymouth, Birmingham and other suburbs. A 2800 Sq Foot house there is still more that. The city of Detroit has some really nice, big, well kept houses that have been around since the 40's when it was actually nice there. They just happen to be on the same street as some not-so-nice houses (depending on the neighborhood)
- holmzz, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3and midwest.
The Minneapolis example is totally B.S. That is either is the crappiest neighborhood ever or
a blatant lie. - jaybol, on 10/30/2009, -0/+3They are pulled from actual listings on the MLS, no one is trying to trick you
- ejbiederman, on 10/30/2009, -1/+4This needs more explaination... or something. Otherwise buried as inaccurate. No way no how can you buy that house in Minneapolis for $175K, or even something average like that. I'm sure the coasts are way off. And srsly... < 500 sq. ft. in Seattle?
