- cadmiumpaint, on 02/23/2009, -1/+11Its unfortunate that respected newspapers are going under. Even if they eliminated print and went digital only, their presence as a respected media outlet is needed.
- KnightMareInc, on 02/23/2009, -1/+7blaming craiglist for the death of print is a bit of a cop out. The quality of print, radio, tv news all have taken a slide, largely due to deregulation.
Instead of each city/area having their own flavor of print/radio everybody gets the same regurgitated crap from the same 3 companies. - CoD4, on 02/23/2009, -2/+8I work for a local paper in nyc and our company is slowly going down too. Sites like craigs really take a toll on classifieds. I'm gonna get get the axe any day now, i'm just sending out resumes like crazy
- KaivenTor, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6It's sad that such a large industry of the country is slowly fading away, but it's only the medium that's changing here. We've found a faster delivery method for the news, so that tends to compete better than paper where events don't occur in real time, we read them the next day.
Newspaper companies need to invest in multiple communications. They need to go online, have a website, have e-mailing options, have social networking apps or tie-ins, and at least play with Twitter and Kindle. It's a matter of convenience these days, people don't want to go and get the news if they can have the news come to them. Organizations that are too entrenched can't adapt fast enough and now they're paying the price. There's still time for many of these companies though. They just need to look up from the printing press. - visionsofhoff, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5So I guess now is not the best time for me to graduate after majoring in Journalism...
- slickmick, on 02/23/2009, -3/+6Die, corrupt MSM, die!
- thesonofdarwin, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3The tumbleweeds rolling down the streets are usually composed mostly of Philly papers, pigeon carcasses, and Wawa plastic bags.
- CoD4, on 02/23/2009, -0/+3@Knight
What you just said is true on a broad scale but not for local papers. They stick to their own local stories.
And i'm not blaming craigslist. I'm just pointing out fact. The only people who post ads anymore are old people and low-tech people.
Nobody under the age of 40 posts in newspapers anymore. - brad3378, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2It's probably not a good time to graduate and enter the job force in any industry.
But maybe you could write for an online news source?
Or maybe write for an advertising firm?
My job best advice (as somebody from Detroit) is to stay flexible and adapt to the changes. - lukedemi, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2I'm an independent contractor for the inquirer (I throw papers) and I talked to a couple of the higher up people about the bankruptcy this morning out of pure interest. It's really nothing that major right now, I mean, obviously the only major paper in the area isn't going to go out of business, but it really is a sign of the times. The business model they're using now for ad revenue is looking pretty drab.
Doesn't matter for me though, by the time I graduate in '11 this recession should be out of here. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -1/+3Do you have Kindle versions? Just askin. Online and Kindle is the way I have my papers delivered now. It's 2009. Paper is a thing of the past.
- seandfeeney, on 02/23/2009, -1/+3Just shows that some things that you take for granted now, may be gone in the near future. We are look forward to a much different future.
- skipdog172, on 02/23/2009, -3/+5Haha, I work in a town of 2,000 and their newspaper isn't going under.
maybe this is a good thing, as another newspaper can take over and have a viable business model? - anachronaut, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2"What deregulation was there for newspapers?"
What is this, Yahoo Answers?
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=FCC+media+deregulation - markgl, on 02/23/2009, -2/+4maybe if they papers didn't suck they would sell.
- CaptCarrot, on 02/23/2009, -2/+4If the New York Times follows suit, how will Obama get re-elected?
- Pandalume, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2What remains to be seen is if online-only ventures can be supported through advertising. There just isn't the same money involved as with print and they will have to work with less. Will we get the same editorial quality that we've been accustomed to when they are operating on 1/3 the budget (if that).
If they can be financially successful then eventually online-only newspapers will earn the same respect. Respect is earned over time. Print media outlets (some anyway) have it because they have been around a long time and their editorial qualities are well-known. Blogs and online-only outlets have yet to earn this, but with time the cream will rise to the crop and there will be online outlets with the same credibility the print newspapers once had.
They just need to find a way to make money that doesn't involve charging for content. Personally, if online was the only resource and I couldn't get my morning newspaper, I would be happy to pay for a premium version if there was a basic free version available. - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1The best writers left Daily News a long time ago
- visionsofhoff, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1hahaha I was not expecting that at all. I couldn't help but crack every time it looped at the NARWHALS NARWHALS part.
- pharmokan, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1the publication industry is dying. advertisers arent willing to pay upwards of 5 figures for ads when they realize everyone is migrating over to the internet.
- xopt, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1PNI is going bankrupt because a bunch of local investors (multimillionaires) bought it using a ton of debt - putting very little cash in themselves. That turned out to be unsustainable in the current financial environment. They have been trying to renegotiate their loans for a year. The bankruptcy will not affect operations. The local investors will probably be wiped out but the debt will be restructured (the banks will end up with stock and new bonds in exchange for their current bonds), and the company will be better able to pay it's interest charges out of income.
Don't get me wrong, the publishing industry is in terrible shape, but this is a case of investors being way too optimistic and loading a company up with too much debt.
The good thing is that employees and operations will largely be unaffected. - rrouse, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1They should put a topless girl on page 3.
- murrdpirate, on 02/23/2009, -2/+3What deregulation was there for newspapers?
- Shakermaker, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Maybe we should bail out the Newspapers while we're at it?
:/
Sorry to say, but in this day and age, newspapers are a waste of time and money. Why go read a paper when everything you need can be found (or COULD be found) on the web? Instead of a newspaper, they should just go with an online version... - visionsofhoff, on 02/23/2009, -4/+5"This is not a (D) or (R) rant, this is just my opinion and nothing else"
*fixed* - KnightMareInc, on 02/23/2009, -2/+3we have newspapers in philly?
- Jacare, on 03/01/2009, -0/+1don't you think that if the newspaper was invented today, you would look at this thing and you would say "look at this you don't have to plug it in, its got no batteries, you can take it into the john with you, it costs 50 cents and when your done with it you throw it out, Brilliant!"
and on ad revenue online does anyone actually pay attention to those advertisements? i for one have, from a young age pretty been trained to ignore them and i don't think i know anyone who intentionally clicks on them for more information. is it a generational gap thing? and if so does it spell the death of internet ads in 10-40 years because people will just ignore them/use programs to block them? or are online ads going to get to the point where you have to wait 10 seconds on a page exclusively devoted to ads before you get to the content you want. - Dou6, on 02/23/2009, -1/+2Who cares, all the information in these papers can be had hours before hand on the internet. In addition, 99% of the stories are just spoon fed fluff pieces or government agency press conference regurgitation.
- brad3378, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Is there such a thing as a successful news website that charges for content?
If not, what would it take to convince viewers to pay for digital content? - inactive, on 02/23/2009, -1/+2It's interesting to see the NYT report this. I wonder which newspaper is going to report it when the times files for bankruptcy... which will be soon hopefully!
- TheInformer, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1I wonder how many of these Philadelphia papers are left leaning? People get tired of the doom, gloom, and constant fear mongering that the leftist news sources continually spew. I'm amazed they have lasted this long.
- KaivenTor, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1@brad3378: I don't think charging for content specifically is going to work out the best for most papers. The blogging model so far (sell ads, distribute content, use distribution to link back to the main site for the full story) tends to be the winner thus far. It's hard to keep a large company afloat on it currently, but I've seen it employed in smaller scale and be more effective than the local news at getting info to people.
Turns out that people don't mind so many ads if they know they're going to get the local news faster online than waiting for the paper. At least those of a certain generation and below. I expect the number of guerrilla news websites to increase as time goes by because they aren't locking content, forcing micro payments, and may report events with greater speed and accuracy than the paper, sometimes with less editorial bias. - slickmick, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Reulctantly. I'd much rather cite a free, independent media.
- TommyBoy919, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1Haha, your medium is dying.
- rrouse, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1It might be the end of an era. The era of newspapers.
- galv0, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1What.. the.. *****..
- RonPauls, on 02/23/2009, -1/+2"respected" ?
Only by liberal statists. Newspapers have ignored their audience - educated people who have jobs - for so long now. - buu2, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1The CEO of both newspapers came to visit my school for a lecture last month to talk about the health of the industry. Guess he was wrong.
- Cojafoji, on 02/23/2009, -0/+1There goes any hope of my ever landing a job with the Inquirer...
- Pandalume, on 02/23/2009, -1/+2cadmium: There are "blogs" with editorial staff, Politico, Lifehacker, etc.
- BLyday, on 02/23/2009, -0/+0I guess they didn't know their medium was dying. Should've hopped onboard the internet bandwagon.
- manogamez, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1The Daily Pennsylvanian is still chugging along! Even though most of our readers are students we make a lot of money on our advertising. Oh and most of the staff are volunteers....
- cadmiumpaint, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1Blogs have no credibility because they are mostly anonymous and the qualifications of the author is always questioned. At least with a newspaper or other company you know that they were hired by someone and went through an interview process that qualified their abilities.
- majmalfunction, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1Straight from the horse's mouth -- here is what the Inquirer has to say about themselves:

- zhepp, on 02/23/2009, -2/+2Start a blog. About Narwhals. http://www.weebls-stuff.com/toons/Narwhals/
sorry its stuck in my head - galv0, on 02/23/2009, -1/+1Wow, I'm from the area and I had no idea. I guess the Intelligencer is the only thing to read for people who don't have or know how to use the internet.
- nadalbg, on 02/23/2009, -4/+3Strange. Never thought this will happen.
