- dsander, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11you actually pay four dollars for a cup of coffee? or do you mean $4 for a for a latte or capucino sugary flavored concoction that's more a dessert than a cup of coffee. I seriously doubt anyone pays $4 for a plain cup of coffee.
I get tired of articles and people saying a cup of coffee at starbucks or pete's etc. is $4. I pay $1.40 for a cup at both places in San Francisco. Not a good way to represent your point. - Leviathan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It's only because the Arabica beans keep getting stopped by Homeland Security on their way into the US...
- FishPoisonCon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"New York, home of the $4 cup of coffee"
uh.. you can buy those anywhere. most people in NY drink the 75ยข-$1.50 coffee from the delis/bodegas. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It costs $1.98 for a large light/sweet at Dunkin' Donuts.. Who would pay $4 for coffee?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6great now instead of getting spam about commoditys in email.. i get them on digg!
- scotticus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just got that... kudos.
- Butros, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2EXACTLY, the next ***** idiot that mentions the "5 dollar cup of coffee" at starbucks is getting thrown in front of a bus. The most expensive cup of coffee at starbucks is 1.80. They do offer other drinks for more money, but these are like ***** desserts at a restaurant and take considerably more preparation than pouring hot water through some ground up beans.
- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All because a lot of people don't think coffee is worth $5 doesn't mean it can't be worth that much. Value is simply what you assign to it and if people get $5 of enjoyment out of it, it's worth $5 to them.
- GiJoeBob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Coffee AND beer both on digg on the same night. Surely this is a sign.
- Buelldozer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I dunno whose digging you down, but your comment was FUNNY!
- fitzfan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Prices for arabica coffee beans on the New York Board of Trade _COULD_ climb more than 20 percent in the next 12 months"
Who writes a story about a commodity that _could_ climb 20%, any commodity or stock _could_ climb 20% in the next 12 months. - ah802, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FTA: Coffee in New York may reach $1.30 a pound by the middle of next year
It's like from $7 to $15 cdn for fare trade coffee and others... up here. Is this the raw price in 50 lb bags or are beans that cheap in NY? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Arabian beans are the ones that explode.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If people want to spend their money on more expensive coffee, and people want to sell more expensive coffee, then why should others dislike them for it? It may be better coffee, it may be more entertaining, or it may simply be more convienient. And to many people, money really is no object. Regardless, it is not your place to make value judgements for other people.
These are the values of Liberty and Freedom that have made the world what it is. Tall poppy syndrome, enforced consumer unionism and infringements of liberty do not serve any purpose in society other than to damage and hinder it. You should not judge others if you yourself do not want to be judged. What would you say to the starving children in Africa when you spend 10 times what they need to eat for a week on warmed water soaked in beans when you could prepare it at home for 1/100th of the cost? You don't have to answer to them, and those richer than you don't have to answer for themselves to you. This enables society to progress peacefully. I don't like it, you don't like it, they don't like it, but there's no denying it is slowly working. - ramiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is a critical domestic and national security priority to seek alternatives and reduce America's dependence on coffee from Arabican countries.
- hobbla87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1how the hell did this get to the front page
I haven't seen one other investing article, and this one is a really crappy one.
It's pro-coffee... from Seattle, yep no conflict of interest there.
And a good rule of thumb for any future articles like this would be "if diggers know it, then it's no longer profitable" any dumbass could look at the futures market and realize that nothing is going to happen. - welshbaloney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Go into any Starbucks and you'll see a list of their 'exotic' beans - mega bucks per pound from impoverished backwater countries. Yeah, the regular Joe is way cheaper than $4; it's the foo-foo blends that cost an arm and few toes...
- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4"$4 coffee is cheap in the northwest. I know people who pay $5.75 for a coffee every morning."
Sure it is, If you're retarded.
Just because there are ***** who will pay out the ass for a cup of coffee doesn't make $4 cheap.
$15 for a gallon of milk doesn't sound reasonable just because some retards are willing to pay $40 a gallon for something that is "hip" or whatever the ***** the appeal is. But I guess it would make you a -little- bit less of an idiot, although not by much. - kylesellers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From my time in Seattle, I can vouch for the fact that they are all too obsessed with the price of coffee on the market. Ever since the price doubled overnight a decade ago and Starbucks almost went under, everyone's a bit jumpy.
Hell, a few days before Katrina hit last year, the business section had an article about how the storms could affect the price of coffee--talk about not seeing the big picture!! - daversion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no doubt Starbucks has hedged their main ingredient, also they are the sole customer of many of those impoverished coffee farms. I work there p/t during the interim and I can say there's no way that garbage is worth the cups its put in. If it floats your boat, pay $2 for a cup of joe or $4 for a double latte. It is a drug like caffeine or cocaine, just because it gives people an aire of sophistication, or is socially acceptable doesn't mean its any better.
- zenguerrilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In Greece coffee costs about the same as in NY but the average salary is about $15,000 - 20,000 / yr.
- dynamicvn, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0great Trading - options for investments - commodity investments options

take a look and you will see! - Antialias, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2$4 coffee is cheap in the northwest. I know people who pay $5.75 for a coffee every morning.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1...well, mostly they're paying $5.75 for milk, ice cream, carmel, chocolate, syrup and other *****. i pay $2 for 3 shots of espresso at diedrich. most coffee shops have similar pricing.
- RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Ya, they put a ***** Starbucks inside the Space Needle. First they take over the national landmarks, then the government, then THE WORLD :)
- Grail01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Just so you know ... Our here in Perth, West Australia average cup price (plain Late, Flat White or Chino) is around $3 and for anywhere really good $4ish ... Not talking Foofoo blends ... One small blessing ... No such thing as Starbucks here yet...
What is Digg?
