- blackhole37, on 07/14/2009, -1/+33When two huge companies battle I think we as the consumers have the most to gain. Lower prices, better features, better support, etc.
So I for one am looking forward to this "war". Let the games begin. - SirBruce, on 07/14/2009, -2/+28Begun, the App War has.
- XeneticXero, on 07/14/2009, -0/+21All of this talk of "war" and "app killers" is so ridiculous to me. Just because one product might be more popular doesn't mean the other has to die or go away.
sensationalism sucks - steelersfan7roe, on 07/14/2009, -1/+20My money and hopes are on eternal competition between Microsoft and Google.
- adeelarshad82, on 07/14/2009, -8/+20I'll be surprised if Google actually wins this war. Microsoft has a major head start and if andriod & chrome have shown anything it's that Google really isn't all that.
- MMusick, on 07/14/2009, -15/+27My money and hopes are on Google.
- jwolcott, on 07/14/2009, -1/+10Wrong, your win will be evened out by your loss in the other one.
Go back to school, son. - lebruf, on 07/14/2009, -1/+9This is where we see the beauty in Capitalism.
Never mind the "profits at any price" ***** we get from automakers, the media, and telecom companies whose only hope is to get us to overpay on an under-delivered product.
This is competition that benefits us as the consumer and only forces the competition to not be satisfied in delivering the status quo.
Remember how horrible Subway's sandwiches were before Quizno's came on the scene? They still might disgust you, but they've improved vastly in quality and pricing for 1 reason and 1 reason only. Competition that squeezes profits and we, as consumers win. - Tbird24, on 07/14/2009, -0/+8Begin? This war started years ago AFAIK
- lordmike, on 07/14/2009, -0/+7The more you tighten your grip Ballmer, the more computing systems will slip through your fingers...
- wejmahtin, on 07/14/2009, -2/+8As dirty as I feel using it, I've been getting much better search results from Bing lately... And Google 'creating' an operating system by throwing their own apps on the Linux kernel? Ninja please.. But I concur with you whole heartedly. My hopes are on the competition sticking around. Round 1... FIGHT!
- DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -1/+7Google Docs are horrid. A free web hosted version of Word & Excel would own Google Docs in just about every way.
- secondwheel2, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5unless they both go bankrupt. where is your money then?
- prodgen, on 07/14/2009, -2/+7TBH, Microsoft has come along way in competing with google. Bing maps beats google maps by far in my area (1 year old v 5 year old, and angled views). Competition will force both companies to compete, which only means better.
Microsoft is attempting to compete with google online and is starting to beat them. Google starting to compete with Microsoft offline and we'll see who wins with that eh?
I'll probably get dug down by all of the google fans. - plainOldFool, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5Did you catch the part about me being a MS fan? This is first time I saw it and I like it. Settle down, Francis.
- inkswamp, on 07/15/2009, -1/+6In case you didn't notice, MS has just about every copy of IE out there prompting users to set Bing as their default search now. Given enough people who don't care what their search engine is, it kinda puts that 8% into perspective, don't you think?
- trevorjez, on 07/14/2009, -1/+6Excel > Google Spreadsheet. Unless that changes, Google will never win in the Enterprise world.
- uknowwhoibe, on 07/14/2009, -0/+5It's not the web-based-application's job to do this.
It is an inherent quality of up-to-date browsers. It's not required. - uknowwhoibe, on 07/14/2009, -5/+9FTA: "If I were using Microsoft Word, it would lead me through spell checking each mistake, offering both grammar and spelling corrections. Google Docs found my errors—highlighting them in yellow—but it doesn't lead me to the first one and offer corrections. Instead, I have to click each word and select the proper spelling. Also, I have a terrible habit of hitting Caps Lock when I type and not realizing it until after I've created three or four all upper-cased sentences. Word gives me a top-menu option for lower-casing words. That's non-existent in Google Docs. For the record: All this slows me way down."
No, what slows you down is that you're a terrible typist. If you aren't using FF/Chrome/IE8, then it's no wonder that your [bad] spelling isn't shown on-the-fly. Don't blame the software, go look up Mavis Beacon. - jwolcott, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4can't we all just get along??
- inkswamp, on 07/14/2009, -2/+6So who exactly is burying my comment and why? I'm starting to believe those rumors that MS hires people to watch popular forums and argue or mod criticism down. What I said was relevant and I'm telling the absolute truth. I didn't want to provide the proof for fear of looking like I was pimping my old zine but screw it. See for yourself.

Click the top link. Dead. That link hasn't been used since 2002.
Exact same search term in Google.

Direct hit.
Face it, whoever you are burying my comment... Bing sucks.
@petersonca, I'll happily accept an apology for that, if you're up to it. - mytradingrobot, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Nice to see some actual competition -
- boomybx, on 07/14/2009, -3/+7Concerning WEB apps, Google's leading it right now. Sure MS has the lead in desktop app, but offline and online are 2 different worlds, especially for apps.
- jwolcott, on 07/14/2009, -2/+6Microsoft has a huge head start, but don't count Google out.
MS owns the operating system market, but Google owns the Internet. The shift is towards the net, which favors the G man. - u8eR, on 07/14/2009, -0/+4Microecon 101: more competition = lower prices = increased consumer welfare.
- wbkang, on 07/14/2009, -1/+4It'sUsers'Fault(TM)
- tommyny04, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I prefer Uranus and Bananas :)
- plainOldFool, on 07/14/2009, -2/+5I was about to bury you for comparing Bing to Google (note: I am a fan of both Google and Microsoft) until I looked at the map feature right now. Holy Crap! The Bird's eye view is sick. So freaking clear.
- shagmin, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3Kind of along the same lines, I'd say Google has momentum in the right direction. Microsoft's best stuff in recent years has been in the video game industry, while everything else has either been negative or stagnant. I just hope the competition helps every company improve itself without any unethical means.
- damack, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3There are few to no Google or Apple fans on Digg.
It's full of Microsoft fanboys though. - id000001, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3I tried Bing but I don't find the result better. Bing have a tendency of ignoring wiki site and knowledge bases. Which, can be a pro or con at the same time depends on how good you are at using Wiki (For example, skip reading the wiki itself, scroll all the way down and click on sources is the proper way of using Wiki)
- id000001, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2The bird eyes view have been there since live, it is quite good, yes.
Not sure I will take it over having no Aerial view -at all- in my area. I have to zoom it all the way out to see the city, and it is completely pixelized, probably 5 years old data. (I can't tell, since all I can see is that it have no extension for the new Vancouver International airport.
Also, it have the bad habit being.. the link is HUGE and un-readable.
They have good and bad, I guess. Though I'm sure they will both improve in time. - DarkShroud, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3You're limiting your view. Using one of Google's services? MS have been matching or surpassing just about everyone of them. Bing is a great search. Live Maps has Bird's eye view, and live traffic reporting. Live Photo has much better options than Google in opening and closing the picture's pages. The mouse over the video to start playing in the thumbnail, Google has nothing on that. While "Gdrive" doesn't even have an actual name yet MS has had Sky Drive out for awhile.
Then there are real world technologies uses. How long until "Natal" & "Surface" technology are being used in standard public displays. Whose Phone OS will have the best chance of connecting or syncing with these displays. Zune's already connect to each other to share data. What company makes the best DVR software that can be streamed to mobile devices like the PSP. What company has been building massive state of the art data centers that likes of which have never been seen before. That would be Microsoft.
The MS Live services are on their way to becoming something big. When Live Mesh can sync to Sky Drive MS will probably own a big portion of my data. Right now Gmail has a slight lead over Hot/Live Mail with IMAP. Ironically Gmail has to use MS Exchange to power their back end. Live Mail uses Delta Sync instead, it and Live Calender only need a bit more tweaking and sync functions and they will own. Windows Live Mail is very nice, I was able to import all my mother's back-up data saved in Thunderbird without issue. It does pretty much everything needed and even has an RSS reader.
MS's downfall is they are not aggressive in marketing what they have and what they're doing. - tnoy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2@unknowwhoibe
The yellow highlighting, click on to get a list of words feature in Google docs is not part of the web browser itself. Have you even used it before? - FutureGuy, on 07/14/2009, -1/+3I hope you have a lot of spare money.
http://news.office-watch.com/t/n.aspx?a=894 - tnoy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2A proper way to say it would be more along the lines of, If any single company wins and eliminates competition, we lose.
- GutterBumber, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2Google earned $21B in advertising revenue last year. I think they know a thing or two about marketing.
- roblange17, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2It will work with any browser that runs silverlight... (in theory)
- avgbody, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1I just hope both companies win, hate to see any US tech company fail.
- revisrev, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1lordmike, you are misinformed. Silverlight is cross-platform, cross-browser.
- id000001, on 07/14/2009, -1/+2For no reason, right?
- GreenBag, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Making money from advertising and advertising their products are two different things. How many people click the "more button?" How many click the "even more" button?
- darny, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1>>Consumers get a trial version of Office when they purchase a new system, but I bet most opt to use the free version of Microsoft Works after that. Others still use Corel WordPerfect
No, no, no.
1. I wouldn't use works to start a document in order to test a printer (not a fan of "print a test page"). Works=worthless and painful
2. Most purchase office bundled, some download pirated versions
3. word perfect is even worse than works.
has this guy been living under a rock?
this article sucks and this guy should go back to reviewing IDE cables or something. buried. - bsamuels453, on 07/29/2009, -0/+1are you ***** STUPID?
Microsoft already HAD a search engine, MSN, which had 8% of the market. With it being renamed Bing, it gained .4% bringing it to 8.4%.
God how do people like you connect to the ***** internet. - esc27, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1This is the second article I've read today where the author seemed surprise Office 2010 would have some web based apps (Word, etc.) This is old, OLD news. Microsoft mentioned it well over a year ago.
- rssej, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1A good reputation via word of mouth still beats even the most ambitious ad campaign. A good product that catches on will stick in consumers mind than any marketing campaign.
- Hermmunster, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1Microsoft's products are blasé. They don't inspire. That's due to them being produced in a vacuum where there's little to no competition. Google's on the other hand shows what a little competition can do. They do it well and they do it openly. Move on. There's no war. Microsoft doesn't know how to compete anymore. If they understand this maybe someday we'll see something different. If they don't well, game over man, game over.
- tnoy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Exactly. I spend a lot of time on my laptop when I don't have internet access.
- moothemagiccow, on 07/15/2009, -0/+1You can talk for ages about how ambitious MS's web app is and how Google Docs doesn't work as well as an offline word processor that's been around since the days of DOS. The difference is Google Docs is already up. It runs on any browser/OS from this decade and it's free. It wasn't an Office competitor until MS decided they were going online.
- plainOldFool, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Files on my local drive > my files in the cloud.
Which is why, at least for me, MSOffice/Open Office > Google Docs for 90% of my work. -
