- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -12/+156perhaps you should have filed, oh, I don't know, BEFORE today?
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -13/+60sorry, I didn't know you paid for anything. I thought it was free for most people
but even with lives, you haven't had a chance since January? - benitojuarez, on 10/12/2007, -4/+39max, you got time to go posting on digg (especially on upcoming stories seeing as you posted your comment 7 hours before this article made the front page) , you got time to do your taxes, quitcherbitchin.
- zlintux, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Companies are required to have all tax documents for customers/employees postmarked by January 31st. Notify the IRS of violations to ensure that this doesn't happen in the future.
Also, if you felt you were given insufficient time to do taxes, you should have filed an extension. I can't believe anyone's claim that they needed up until today to do them, and it wasn't possible to do them earlier. That'd be an impressive coincidence that it took you exactly as much time as you were given to do what can be done in a day.
If you had even finished your taxes by the time the post office closed you could've printed the forms out and hurried yourself down to get them postmarked.
By all means, feel free to yell at, sue and/or never do business with TurboTax again. But, I can't say this headline is a surprise... - kelbear, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21http://forums.turbotax.com/intuit/board/message?board.id=ef06&message.id=6025&page=1

IRS and Intuit will provide further details in the morning... thank you for your patience!" - TheGreatTK, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Not to say that that intuit should know better, but cmon. THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PROCRASTINATE UNTIL THE LAST F*CKING MINUTE!
Do your crap early next time! - OrangeCrush, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@ebfoxbat:
That's not just fiscally irresponsible, it's silly. If you must hide money from yourself in order to save it, don't do it by giving the government an interest free loan. There are several mutual funds with savings plans that don't require a minimum balance and can auto-debit your bank account before you even see the money.
Withholding $2,000 over a year means they're deducting an extra $166.67 per month from your paychecks. If you invested that at even a fairly piddly 6% you'd have an extra $55.97--not a barn burner, but it's still free money. Hold off another year, keep doing the same thing, and your balance is now $4,238.74. - EBFoxbat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+21Am I the only one that files the DAY I get my W-2?
I overpaid by ~$2000 last year, on purpose, to save for a computer. I know it's fiscally irresponsible but I can help it. It worked out so well that I'm doing it again this year. The day I get my W-2 I e-file. A week later I get a big kick in my savings account. - osirisothedead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@jlink7
I owed just over $1200. If I'd been owed money back, I'd have filed the day I got my paperwork.
Being single and middle class means getting raped on taxes. - notman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15So he didn't have time to file his taxes earlier, but he has time to register a domain name and set up a site? What a ***** douche
- martyf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Why I Always File At The Last Minute.
When you are self-employed, or partially self-employed - as in you have several thousands of dollars in 1099 income, income that will require payment of taxes, you'd be an idiot to take cash our of interest-earning accounts in February to pay a bill that's due in April. Your goal in this situation is to manage cash-flow, and by preparing taxes early, and knowing the "hit" in April, you can then plan you cash needs accordingly. I filed April 14th.
I don't know about you, but because of the nature of my work, I get some people paying as an "employee" with W2's, others with Contractor relationships, or 1099, and then there's investment income and other stuff. This year's filing I had 9 W2 forms, 24 different types of 1099, a 1098, and a few other oddballs. Every year, I file Federal, plus 4 or 5 states, plus a local tax. I did my taxes with Turbotax this year, and the final printout with all the various forms and returns was 203 pages. It fills a notebook quite well.
For what it's worth, Turbotax also let me down on a state e-filing - it was submitted by never confirmed, so I ended sup paper filing a duplicate return, which has scared the hell out of me, because I suspect that this will be an administrative headache for a long long time.
Finally, shame on Intuit for all of this. Everyone knows that people wait until the last minute - heck we've all see the TV news with people actually doing their taxes AT THE POST OFFICE at 11:45 PM on tax day. Surge loads are part of the requirements of the system. The legal repercussions could be interesting, if there are any. - Spr0k3t, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm still amazed that people wait until the very last minute.
- qwertytpn1134, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I just went to the TaxCut / H&R Block site and filed an extension. Went through very quickly - took about 5 minutes.
- osirisothedead, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10According to NBC this morning, the IRS isn't going to penalize people trying to file through TurboTax.
I waited until the last minute, but I filed by mail. Having the docs since January isn't the point. The government had enough of my cash last year, they can wait until the last minute until they get what they think I owe them. - psitech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I tried to e-file with turbo tax starting at 7pm eastern. I finally gave up at 11:40pm and went to the post office and mailed everything.
- mistercash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Talk about a hidden charge. Remember this "service" costs about $34 on top of the software costs when e-filing both a Federal and state return.
- dotorg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Just so everyone knows, because it seems to be totally missed by some people... April 15th (17th) is not the day you have to do your taxes, its just the last day to do them. You can do them... you know... when you get all your paperwork. In February.
- edlowe0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I've used TT for four years and it always worked great. No problems this year either, when I filed in MARCH.
- shutup2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9would you stop posting on the turbo tax site.
Those of us who have something to file might be interested in reading something other than your sophomoric hints

again.
get a life and get a job that doesn't involve Digg posting ( whatever that is ) .. - sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Because when you lobby the government to not allow e-file other than through companies like yours, you have a moral obligation to ACTUALLY WORK.
- Iktomi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7@max
By all means - follow your 8 point plan. You didn't have enough time to plan and do your taxes for over 3 months but you should definitely waste time and money disputing, telling, selling, talking, suing, whining, and digging.
Stop being an idiot and blaming everyone and everything else for your shortcomings. Take some responsibility for your own actions and lack of planning - we have enough dead weight in this society, we don't need you dragging along as well. - willistg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think one reason why some people may wait till the last minute is to consolidate all their rage at the tax system/government etc... into one day, sort of an anti holiday. That's what I do anyway.
- sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6One main reason to wait until the last day is when you own big taxes. But the proper response then is to mail it in with a check, to take even longer before they get your money.
- implementor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I used HR Block's Tax Cut software as well, it was the easiest tax software I've ever used, and they e-mail you with filing updates (when the fed and state have accepted your return, etc.), I'll be using them next year as well. And it was less expensive than TurboTax.
- SteelChicken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I was in the post office yesterday to ship something and the office was mobbed, full of people asking for tax forms.
Morons. Blame turbotax because you procrastinated for 2 months? Funny stuff. - bwilliams80, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@c5mjohn "perhaps you should have filed, oh, I don't know, BEFORE today?"
I had to pay in a ***** load of money. It took me until mid-April to save up the money I owed. That is why I waited until the last minute. - diggduggjoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I understand that the tax code is complex, that is why I use a professional to do it. It costs more, but I sleep better and I am not bashing my head trying to figure out what everything means for several months. I have a business and it is far better to let a pro do it.
Those who wish to delay payment could have it done in February or March and e-file one week before hand. That gives you a safety net. I suppose you drive your car until the gas gauge hits E. I was done in late March. Next year, my goal is being done by mid February. The reason? I got a refreshing productivity boost once I knew it was done. Why on earth you want to worry about it until the last minute is beyond me. Masochists may enjoy it, though.
If, you want your life to be easier, fight for the Fair Tax. The forms would be gone, forever. - msturgill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use TaxCut.
- picaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Maybe he meant audi(t)? Yeah, that would be very sweet.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6@efox - Nope, you're not alone. My wife and I have had our return for well over a month now. People that wait until the last minute, without reason, are just being idiots. If it takes you that long to prepare your taxes, fine, but 99% of people don't.
- arondee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://money.cnn.com/2007/04/18/pf/taxes/intuit_turbotax/
The IRS is not going to penalize late filers using Turbo Tax. Everyone talking about class action lawsuits should just drop it. - SillyRabbits, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7"Am I the only one that files the DAY I get my W-2? Even if you know you will owe, there's no reason not to do them early. You don't actually have to put it in the mail the day you do it, just write the check and seal it in the envolope and hold onto it until April 15th. At least then you can plan a little if you owe much more than you thought (it's not fun to learn 3 hours before the deadline that you have to find a way to cover a $15,000 check). - sacherjj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@twelve17
That is what these people were doing, FILING. That is what was broke. Many people complaining had theirs done for a while. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Maybe they should have a new contest:
Whoever makes best TurboRap video gets to submit their taxes on time. - wishmaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does this happen every year? If so, they should really change their software. 30 second delay to "verify" the forms, then a request to save (done 20 failed submissions in a row....) then they contact the server which rejects the request. It turns out that one of my "failed" attempts actually transmitted my forms. I noticed that the filings were taking longer and longer in the "verify" stage. Finally I just shut down turbotax and restarted it. It said they were already filed.
After going to their website, https://turbotax.intuit.com/efile/efile_status_lookup.jhtml filling in my SSN and my super secret code (Zip code):
"Enter your zip code.
Your five digit zip code, which is known only by you, will allow us to verify that it is you that is making this request. Please enter your five digit zip code.
Zip Code: "
It actually came back with both my state and federal filed. I am hoping that they really were. If not, I will be cleaning up the mess in a few days. - chetanw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I used H&R to e-file this year and it was a breeze. Besides, I don't see the H&R software being any more complex than TurboTax - they asked almost the same (number of) questions.
But then again, maybe both of you are just plain stupid. - jeffgtr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I filed on Sunday and my return is still pending. Next time I'm going to just mail it.
- bensanden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Procrastination is the American way. If you owe the IRS it is in your advantage to wait until the 11th hour to file. If I buy a product for a capability and that capability doesn't work, the product is defective. TurboTax is well aware of tax filing trends and should have been better prepared.
- artwire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4After filing a week ago and still receiving PENDING ... PENDING... for state -- procrastination isn't the issue. Turbo Tax MELTED DOWN and everything disappeared. It kept sending messages that NO RETURNS HAD BEEN FILED.. even though it had already accepted the federal. People who already HAD submitted were told to resubmit their return (big mistake!), further jamming the servers. After hours of aggravation -- trying to resubmit -- I discovered that you have til April 22 to refile (IF in fact you had submitted in the first place -- but you couldnt confirm status. These sanctimonious people sniffing that we should have filed early might enjoy being smug, but the reality is ...some of us DID file early and it still "lost" the returns. TT failed big time. Today, it's back to pending --- pending --- pending which, I admit, is an improvement over last night's fiasco. They didnt have any trouble processing the credit card in a timely fashion, but when it came to handling the returns .... all bets are off.
- TheGeek27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sounds like somebody needs a WHAAAAAAAAAAmbulence.
- eatmyshorts, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This problem was not confined to last night only. I filed on Sunday evening, got my "Congratulations! Your taxes have been e-filed successfully!" message, only to log in this morning to find that they were not filed. After a 2 hour wait for an online chat with their support people, they told me that I had not filed correctly. Why the confirmation message, then?
The forums show that many others also had this problem on Sunday evening. This problem is bigger than they are admitting, and their support people are being very uncooperative over the matter. I don't care that the IRS is giving me an extension. I'll never use Intuit products again, primarily as a result of their poor customer service. It is simply unacceptable to tell your users that they screwed up, especially in the face of mounting evidence that the problem lies with the company, not the users. - nick0909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only problem with TurboTax is they update their software until about two weeks before the deadline. I had my taxes done in TurboTax but waited until a week ago to print and file them (by mail, screw the e-file charge) because every time I ran TT it would download updates, and not just to obscure tax forms, but it would update the 1040 and other major forms. I don't want to send in my taxes with a jacked up form because of TT, so I waited a bit, albeit not as long as most of these people. I have been doing TT for years, but its looking like it might be time for a change to some of the other programs on the market...
- JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3What's the deal? RIM (BlackBerry guys) are having worldwide problems today, too.
- jhuebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would also have an added benefit of forcing criminals who would normally completely evade paying taxes to pay taxes on the luxury items they often enjoy. Additionally, illegal immigrants would contribute to the tax base, since they would be unable to file for tax exemption based on a minimum income (if I understand that part correctly). Frankly, I think a consumption tax would lower the overall tax burden for middle-income families and simplify government in a way not seen for decades.
- twelve17, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"Some people have lives"
Sorry, I don't buy it. You made time to do your taxes at the last minute, you could have done the same in the two month window you had. If this was an experience at a walk-in store, an the line was really long because of everyone doing things at the last minute, would you set up a class action lawsuit? - Rothgarr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3If I've learned something about human nature, it's that most people wait until the last minute. In my line of work I set up web sites/technology for contents, grants, etc. I'll never understand it, but it's always the case that people wait until the last day to submit their material. On that day the people who are running the contest/grant/whatever are flooded with calls and emails asking for help and extensions and they simply can't keep up. Sometimes as described in this Digg story, the servers get overrun as well.
Regardless if people need to pay taxes, or if they are filling out an letter of intent for a grant worth a hundred thousand dollars, or whatever, you need to budget time for errors, follow-up, etc.
If you are paying taxes, it's so worth losing the few dollars of interest you may have made by holding out for the last minute because your time that you will lose to the hassle you now have to go through is worth so much more. - swizzcheez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Aren't we the grumpy idiot this morning? Posting nonsense like that two days after the VT incident is just stupid.
Look, I too am fed up with the IRS and the whole notion that the country should be forced to act like accountants because the government wants to waste money.
But come on, "7 sticks of dynamite"? Bad form old man. - alpinweiss88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I always overpay, and I always get a refund. Yeah yeah, I know, government free money, interest, etc etc.
I *LIKE* filing my taxes in February, and I like getting a refund. The interest I lost on that money isn't worth the time it would take me to figure out how much to save vs how much to pay. Not to mention that it also provides a little bit of cushion in case there are unseen expenses during the year, or a loss of income. Not to mention the absolute hassle of having to worry about getting them filed on time. Filing my taxes is stress-free every year. You can bitch about Intuit's servers all you want, they did screw up. It is their product and their business. But how do you feel about your decision to file at the last minute now? Was it worth it to you? Will you wait again next year? - krinn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3My employer withheld pretty close to what I owed. I had to send the IRS a check for the taxes on interest on savings accounts, which wasn't withheld. I don't see how people end up with huge refunds unless they really screwed up their W-4s.
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wanted to follow up and let everyone know that I received my notification and completed my state returns today.
