- SRaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yes because instead of being creative and offering better service(s) it's easier to sue and kill competition that way. I mean really, a patent on how to create a list of movies? /rant
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14How the frick can you patent a *list*?
- thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12this is insane..
what if microsoft (or anyone) had patented, for example, the way an email program like outlook works? instead of being able to use an alternative program like thunderbird, which includes many or all of the same features of its predecessors AND adds new functionality and stability to make it more appleaing, we would be stuck. - matts0344, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I use Netflix and I *want*blockbuster around so they can fight over price.
I've used both and they're pretty much the same thing. - pimpdad82, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Why would anyone want LESS competition? No lawsuit should allow the creation of a monopoly. BTW, I have had both Netflix and Blockbuster Online services. With Netflix the movies were never available. Now that I have blockbuster I always get movies when I want them.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8been to blockbuster lately?
I'll admit I hadn't been to one in a long ass time, now they have delivery service(to your door) pizza place style..
and they have the widest array of indy films I've ever seen, I think they've given up on the typical films and focused on older, foreign and indy films....I got Battle Royale from there to replace my old copy - Stikes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8You would be surprised how stupid our patent system is...
- diecastbeatdown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6it's true. you could scribble on a piece of paper and patent it.
- infiniti029, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've tried both Netflix, and Blockbuster... and I gotta say that Blockbuster is awesome because you get free coupons every month to rent stuff in the store. That means GAMES BABY. Plus, if you order a buncha movies, and decide you want to pick up some more stuff you can just drive right to the store and get it immediately.
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My biggest love for blockbuster online is the fact that I have never been **throttled** and Blockbuster has never **hidden movies** from me.
*Quote Netflix: "In determining priority for shipping and inventory allocation, we give priority to those members who receive the fewest DVDs through our service..."

what a bargin. - brhad56, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blockbuster needs to quit? Netflix started this rediculous lawsuit. I was a happy netflix customer for 3 years, but decided I wasn't going to support these patent wars and I cancelled my subscription.

"With Netflix the movies were never available."
Huh? I've had Netflix for like 2 years and I rarely have this problem. Sometimes when a movie is very popular and has just been released there will be a short wait time, but even then I don't have a problem.
But, do you have a quick turn around? I.e. do you get the movies, watch them all in one night (or copy? better not answer that one) and return them. If that's the case, that's most likely the reason.
I get my 3 movies, watch them over the period of a week, forget about 'em for another week or so, remember I still have them and return them, I get my next 3 within 2 days with no wait. - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm using Blockbuster and I can tell you that I have never been **throttled** and Blockbuster has never **hidden movies** from me
and if the price of holding a grudge against Blockbuster because of their bad store policies is having to put up with ***** like that then I'll gladly rent from the old devil to avoid renting from the new devil. - infiniti029, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, which you have to pay for. I meant you get free rentals in-store with your subscription, which is completely different than what you meant.

"Copying" a patent isn't [technically] permissible unless you have a license from the patent holder. You certainly file a patent of your own design that incorporates another patent, but the implementor of your patent will have to secure licenses to other patents in the chain to [try to] prevent being sued for infringement.
At any rate, I see the problem as allowing a patent on makeing lists. Fsck'ing absurd. - jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought it's okay to copy a patent, as long as your product offered a 'significant' improvement (like an added feature). Defining 'significant' is the challenge though.
- rewquio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Somebody got a patent for a swing hanging from a tree.
- jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Oh goody more Intellectual Property *****!!! Common America get with the program Patents as we know them are a rusting hulk of ***** waiting to smell up the place for a good long time to come..
- brianjlowry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The same way you can patent "social networking" or any other concept that has been around for thousands of years. I was thinking of filing a patent for "the wheel".
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1error, mod down
- growler1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ infiniti29
Yeah, I agree, but I'm morally opposed to BB because they got where they are in marketshare and visibility and then hosed all of America with the bogus late-fee stuff, which was pretty blatantly a rip-off tactic, and continued until the class-action suit.
I originally wanted to see them die for that. But they do seem to have learned their lesson. Like somebody else said, the nice thing about one company not having market share is that all the up and comers help keep everybody honest. I hope Netflix learns this lesson before the market hands them their walking ticket.
Or not. As a consumer, I vote with my feet and my wallet. - i64X, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2>> Plus, if you order a buncha movies, and decide you want to pick up some more stuff you can just drive right to the store and get it immediately
If I get my Netflix movies and decide I want more I can also go down to Blockbuster and rent more... - Stikes, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I didn't vote for the a**holes in congress...
- delp3, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Blockbuster seriously needs to just quit. They've got nothing on Netflix and never will. Netflix is one of the companies I am a fanboy of and proud of it. I recommend their service to anyone.
