- richmomz, on 01/24/2009, -0/+125For the record this is not a U.S. Navy accident - this was a botched landing on a Russian carrier by a Su-33 aircraft.
Also, fair warning to people with sensitive computer speakers - turn down the volume before you play this video if you don't want the entire house to sound like a carrier flight deck. - doublefelix, on 01/23/2009, -0/+114At least the money for the ejection seat went unwasted.
- elie195, on 01/24/2009, -2/+58"activate the BRAKE" not break...jeez come on how hard is it to spell things right.
- Mossman85, on 01/25/2009, -0/+51Maybe I want my house to sound like a carrier flight deck?
- DangerCollie, on 01/25/2009, -0/+39First you blow the landing, then the spine-crushing acceleration of the ejection seat, getting soaked like a tea bag, then getting run over by an aircraft carrier.
How was your day, dear? - wes00mertes, on 01/24/2009, -0/+33It was subliminal advertising for the site.
- unusualbob, on 01/25/2009, -1/+33The Su-33 is only $50 Million (2006)
Source:http://www.sinodefence.com/news/2006/news06-10-24. ... lists 2 as being worth $100 million
Also, he probably should have just stayed in the fighter rather than getting torn a new one by his commanders. - LeDucky, on 01/25/2009, -0/+31Looks to me like the cable broke before fully stopping the plane. He had to have caught the cable since the plane slowed down considerably upon landing. So even though he would hold down the throttle upon landing in case he missed the cable, it does no good in this case.
- Radan, on 01/25/2009, -0/+28Wait, your house doesn't sound like a carrier flight deck?
- AmishMack, on 01/25/2009, -3/+30That's nothing, I've blown 6 seconds 80 million times.
- richmomz, on 01/24/2009, -0/+24Actually Russian tax dollars - that was a Sukhoi jet landing (crashing?) on a Russian carrier.
- Lifehedge, on 01/25/2009, -7/+30We used to work with some Russian equipment, mostly APCs. When we lined them up we discovered that the same models from the same batch had different measurements. One could be 5-8 inches longer than the one next to it. Lots of weird stuff like that. Vodka plated a part in making them I guess.
- amauldin71, on 01/25/2009, -1/+22He didn't call the ball.
- DonKarnage25, on 01/25/2009, -0/+18Yeah.. I was wearing headphones. Damn near broke my eardrums.
- rikuansem13, on 01/23/2009, -1/+18Um... Oops?
- dannykeene, on 01/23/2009, -0/+15"EPIC Fail"
Epic overuse of a catch phrase - ashwinmudigonda, on 01/25/2009, -0/+15My name is John McCain and I approve this message.
- LeadStripes, on 01/25/2009, -1/+15I bet I could do it in less time.
- sneaker98, on 01/25/2009, -0/+13Doubt it was the pilot - it looks to me like one of the catch cables lining the carrier's landing runway snapped.
What, you thought the pilot had a magical 100mph+ to 0 brake? ;) - EetFuk, on 01/25/2009, -1/+11Not to mention getting back on board having just destroyed a jet fighter.
- DeskFlyer, on 01/25/2009, -0/+10Keep reading, it gets funnier:
"The next day, it was found prior to takeoff, that when the water cooled jet blast deflectors were set at their normal setting of 60 degrees, they were too close to the engine nozzles. They were ordered to be set at 45 degrees, but the actuator could not hold them in that position. The crew then improvised makeshift braces out of steel pipe to hold the deflector in position. Unfortunately, the welders neglected to clear the metal fragments that resulted from their work, and these fragments pelted observers. Then to make matters worse, the pop-up detents would not retract when ordered, and the prototype sat in front of the shield for 8 seconds longer than the maximum safe time of 6 seconds. This then caused the shield's water pipes to explode, blowing apart the shield." - Bricktopgr, on 01/25/2009, -0/+10What was that second plane launching just after with the splash in the water about???
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+10Not to get all technical, but it looks like the arresting gear failed, you can see the plane has caught the wire and then for some reason it drops loose.
- n8to, on 01/25/2009, -0/+9I agree. I'd always heard that when those planes land they go to full throttle so if there ever was this sort of mishap, they could take off right away. But I think you're right - the cable broke, but not before slowing the plane down so much that it couldn't take off again.
- strudey, on 01/25/2009, -1/+10$80M is the MSRP.
- Volatile36, on 01/25/2009, -1/+10The Wikipedia entry for this is almost hilarious.
"The first actual carrier landing did not pass without incident, as would be hoped. It was discovered that despite the shortening of the fighter, it was still too tall to fit through the hangar door, and special clamps had to be fitted to the landing gear to squeeze it through the hangar."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Su-33 - edebolt, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9no idea why they are digging you down. Russian factory workers and vodka are one and the same.
- poihead, on 01/25/2009, -1/+9Damn, that was loud!!
- ultralights, on 01/26/2009, -0/+8$80 Million in 6 seconds, or $700 Billion with one signature....
- ophawk, on 01/25/2009, -4/+12Where do I start,
The Cable in question is actually called an Arresting Cable.
Pilots are trained to go to Max Power when landing to avoid situations such as this, You hit the deck go Full Afterburner, then only after the plane stops, can you, cut back the throttles, this pilot did not do that, no afterburner, not enough speed to get back off the deck, in case a cable is missed, called a "Bolter". I don't know if the spelling is correct for that, but I did here the term several times a day, during my 4 years on an Aircraft Carrier, The USS Independence CV-62.
Thank you. - gyrfalcon, on 01/25/2009, -0/+8Russians make the best ejection seats... I also doubt a Mig-29 goes for 80 million USD.
Now if Digg would just block break.com SPAM. >:o - bpwrinn, on 01/25/2009, -1/+8Haha, those silly Russians.
- Murrabbit, on 01/25/2009, -1/+7Reminds me of that old Top Gun NES game - landings on those carries are just impassable! At least the pilot seemed to get out ok.
- Alpants, on 01/25/2009, -1/+7WARNING -- TURN YOUR VOLUME WAY DOWN BEFORE PLAYING THIS VIDEO!! I had headphones on and nearly went deaf weren't it for my quick reflexes..
- TheCash, on 01/25/2009, -0/+6He ejected because there is no manual canopy release on those things. The damn hulks sink like a rock, and by the time he'd gotten unhooked and opened the canopy, he'd have been 60 feet under water.
- lhbaker, on 01/25/2009, -1/+6It wasn't launching, it was doing exactly what the first plane was doing: Touch and Go's. The first plane simply lost power. When a plane lands on the deck of an aircraft carrier, the pilot throttles up in case he misses the cable.
- blakeage, on 01/25/2009, -1/+6Lots of laps around the boat and pushups for that one...
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Goose didn't talk to him
- Appox, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5I suggest you don't turn down the volume then (even turn it up if you so please)
- jasdf, on 01/26/2009, -0/+5That isn't a Mig, it is a Sukhoi.
- tgc1, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5*ONLY* 50 million. I like how you think.
- TalenGTP, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Whats the story with the 2nd part of the video where it looks like a different plane misses a cable and continues on. Something fairly large splashes down in the water. Maybe it was the rest of the 80Mil :D
- dudio, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5"break" cable ... "careering"..
What is this world coming to ?! - Kristijan12, on 01/25/2009, -0/+5Oh, most beautiful fighter gone to waste.
- quietjoe, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7Achievement unlocked.
- phonixed, on 01/25/2009, -1/+6Aren't pilots educated to assume that the tripwire might not work?
- northernphoto, on 01/25/2009, -2/+7The crew didn't forget *****. The cable broke.
Bury for being inaccurate - richmomz, on 01/26/2009, -0/+4Then this is the video for YOU!
- PGPirate, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4WHAT?!
- NinjaGod, on 01/25/2009, -1/+5I'd be pissed.
