- teh_spazz, on 08/28/2008, -2/+77"After the jump"
Whoever came up with this stupid phrase needs to be maimed. - seraph582, on 08/28/2008, -2/+46Good for them!! ***** that new NY law!
- BXRWXR, on 08/28/2008, -1/+35Good on the taxes.
Bad on the people who use the word "pinged" to mean "sent an e-mail" and "after the jump" to mean "after we force you to look at ads".
Hint: Nobody "does" ads anymore - Adblock FTW. - drtitanium0, on 08/28/2008, -0/+20Newegg is the best internet company I have ever bought anything from and they seem to be keeping up the trend.
- fwertz, on 08/28/2008, -1/+14Pros: Not taxed
Cons: Doesn't do my laundry or taste like a cheese steak
Other: *****' guidos. - RyeBrye, on 08/28/2008, -0/+12Although online resellers with no presence in your state are not required to charge you sales tax - in almost all states you ARE required to pay a "use tax" on things. I guess the thought is "Hey, if they bought this out of state and paid no taxes on it, they need to pay us taxes for the privilege of using it!"
Laws vary by state, but in general - thinking you are avoiding a x% tax obligation because you buy from an online retailer with no presence in your state is generally false. Your state usually has a way to make you legally obligated to pay either that same x% or a different y% in "use tax" and dodging that tax can have stiff penalties.

And yes... I hate use tax. - smoger, on 08/28/2008, -0/+12everytime i hear "use tax"... i LOL.
does anyone honestly pay that?
i mean,.. besides me of course :looks around nervously for IRS employed diggers: - dylio, on 08/28/2008, -1/+12I have given Newegg over 5000 dollars and I am happy with that. Without them I would be paying a lot more than that for gadgets.
- popsumer, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10Source article: http://www.schiffner.com/index.php/2008/08/27/newe ...
- stevets, on 08/28/2008, -1/+11I hate sales tax. Thankfully though, Oregon doesn't have sales tax. But anytime I go out of state and buy something, there's that "Gotcha" at the cash register.
Back on topic though, I really hope that internet retailers can remain free of having to collect sales tax imposed by states that they aren't based in. But with shrinking state revenues, and increasing state budgets, I'm sure the legislators will be getting creative in the years to come. - blueskydiver76, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10I pinged newegg...
usbmaapp143v.am.sony.com% ping www.newegg.com
PING www.newegg.com (204.14.213.185) 56(84) bytes of data. - roxgod666, on 08/28/2008, -0/+10Thats like saying "i love air."
- eggsovereasy, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7I hate income tax more.
- MaynardJK, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7Agreed. I really miss free shipping though.
- TheInformer, on 08/28/2008, -1/+8If people think the internet in 5-10 years will be the same as it is now, think again.
Government will start to tax it in every way they can to pay for their entitlement programs. - BXRWXR, on 08/28/2008, -0/+7Samual?
Is that like some kind of Ninja spelling? - sockpuppets, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Good luck getting me to pay a "use tax." I'm raped by the government enough as it is. They can have their money when they pry it from my cold, dead mousing hand.*
*My name is Kevin Rose. I live in San Francisco, CA. My social security number is 119-45-9912. - tony23, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6Frankly it would have been better if Newegg, along with Overstock and Amazon, simply stopped selling in New York. I bet that would piss off enough people to get the stupid tax repealed.
- ho0ber, on 08/28/2008, -0/+6It has also somehow made it seem more acceptable to plop ads right in the middle of articles too. If you ever find out who came up with it, let me know and I'll lend you a fist.
- gdonald, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7It's a "newspaper" term, and I agree with you 100%, has no place on the interwebs.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=aft ... - todamax, on 08/28/2008, -1/+7i just bought about a 100ft lan cable off newegg for 10$
and an xbox live 1 year card for 40$
***** love newegg - ackbz1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+5overstock did this. amazon is fighting the NY law in court and the law is already in the process of being repealed by lawmakers.
- fascistpig, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Adblock and NoScript do their jobs so well, that when I started seeing this phrase I was genuinely confused. I would look for a ramp or some bump that I had to physically move my mouse over to get the rest of the article. So, yes, it is a very stupid phrase.
- Wonderama, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4I live in New York and when I buy gas in New Jersey (it's always cheaper) I'm supposed to pay New York their "lost" tax revenue for buying cheaper gas out of state. ***** NY and their socialist tax laws.
- mooninite, on 08/28/2008, -1/+5Read more Digg comments, after the jump.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 08/28/2008, -2/+6Check out my new haircut
JAYGUH BOMB - pudds, on 08/28/2008, -0/+4Buried as consumerist spam. Link to the original, please.
- DJMattB241, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Absolutely. I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment expressed in this thread.
***** the RIAA... I mean... the government! - SadMartigan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+3Yeah, hooray for successful businessmen who find legal tax loops!
(I'm not being sarcastic, I truly believe that people should do everything they legally can to avoid taxation, and then donate anonymously to worthy causes.) - esc27, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Sad that an article titled "How Newegg Stopped Collecting New York State Tax" doesn't actually explain "How Newegg Stopped Collecting New York State Tax" glad it happened though.
- hilo4321, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3good call using urban dictionary as a source...
even its true...just seems silly to use a website that i (and everyone i know that has heard of it) solely use to look up stupid sex positions(?) - GaryChalmers, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I got an email from Newegg about this. Amazon - Please do the same!!
- mooninite, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Amazon already has something similar in Texas. No sales tax and they have a warehouse 30 miles from me. Free shipping means next day for me, tax free. :)
- Braxo, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3I don't digg articles that use the 'After the jump' or 'After the fold' phrase.
- OpaqueMurdock, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Most states have had tax laws that require the purchaser to pay if the out of state retailer does not collect sales tax. Someone above posted a link I think to an explanation of it, but the point is that this is not new... People just are not usually aware of it. Wacky huh?
Check your states laws you may have been breaking them for years. - CalcProgrammer1, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Newegg is awesome. I repaired a broken PC with a new motherboard/CPU/PSU for just around $100, got a great deal on the Xbox Live card at $40, and also got a good deal on a wired 360 controller for 360/PC. Their selection is awesome and they ship really fast too.
- teh_spazz, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Are you surprised? It's Gawker Media...
- kierucom, on 08/28/2008, -0/+3Interestingly enough... the article doesn't actually answer the title "How Newegg Stopped Collecting New York State Tax". It even makes it a point to mention that the real 'how' behind it all is unknown... merely that by claiming a restructuring of their affiliate program they've bypassed the laws requiring the tax.
More accurate titles FTW! - inactive, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2What's great is that "after the jump" you only get Newegg's official statement that NY clarified the definition of "affiliate program" and that Newegg restructured around it. It's the same information in the digg headline. If they gave a synopsis of what counts as an affiliate program and what restructuring means, there might be something worth reading.
- BXRWXR, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Hardee-har-har-har.
- gh0st3000, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Same, but I guess it's worth it because Newegg always ships to my house in about a day even with the free shipping.
- davidsmero, on 08/28/2008, -1/+3Shut the ***** up!
- ubuwalker31, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2Don't forget about the "De Minimis" rule with taxes. Your usually safe for purchases under $100. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_minimis
- SLockhart, on 08/29/2008, -1/+3Yeah screw taxes. We don't need paved roads or social safety nets.
- hilo4321, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2that would be sweet as hell
- GiggleStick, on 08/29/2008, -0/+2"Californians get it both ways, unfortunately."
I've heard that about them. - OpaqueMurdock, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2I have never spoken to a single person who has claimed to have paid such a tax... human nature precludes such action mostly. You can't just ask someone nicely to pay the tax on something they purchased. Especially if you don't make any real effort to let them know that its their responsibility. Everyone reading this now knows that they should go check out their states tax laws and figure out how to be in compliance... lol well go! What are you all still doing looking at Digg? hmmm.
Its all very interesting to me. - yourmanstan, on 08/28/2008, -0/+2title would make more sense to say "how New York tried to collect sales tax on sales that did not occur in NY"
