- shylove, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3So now you worry about state programs, what is it that helped drive the housing valuation but states trying to keep their programs going.
Anyway I think states aren't usually encouraged to go on deficit spending binges, that's what we have the federal gov't for but it might be smart to tax people in the good times for use during the bad times instead of cutting taxes. Are we all fools or what??? The deficit spending of all of us in this country is just following the federal governments long term bad example!!! and no taxes and no federal assistance to states is just making it worse thanks to the miracles or Reaganomics that says no government is the best government, except for needless expensive wars. Wars to protect our security abroad and anarchy at home!! - Coolaborations, on 12/29/2008, -0/+3oops -- submitted this (duplicate): http://digg.com/business_finance/Are_the_50_States ...

"It’s true that the economy is currently shrinking. But that’s the result of a slump in private spending. It makes no sense to add to the problem by cutting public spending, too.
In fact, the true cost of government programs, especially public investment, is much lower now than in more prosperous times. When the economy is booming, public investment competes with the private sector for scarce resources — for skilled construction workers, for capital. But right now many of the workers employed on infrastructure projects would otherwise be unemployed, and the money borrowed to pay for these projects would otherwise sit idle."
All of the states are cutting spending right now. That will just compound our problems. They are panicking and as a result our economic problems will escalate quickly.
And think about the long term effects of state programs which work. If health care is cut any further people will just get sicker, more expensive to treat and less likely to work. The lack of group and foster homes will mean more children remain in abusive homes and will not get the treatment they need.
