Comcast Will Charge You $2 To Stop Sending You Junk Mail

consumerist.com — We don't mean to influence the "Worst Company In America" voting, but check this out: if you call Comcast and ask them to stop sending you anything other than your bill, they'll agree but quietly slap you with a $1.99 "change of service" fee.

The only thing that makes these monstrous corporations drop their prices is competition, and in quite a few areas, Comcast is the only game in town (especially if you can't get satellite internet).

            As to the resources point, yes it wastes resources. But I'm not going to give Comcast a dime to stop it.

Then in bright ink write why you think the company is bad on the outside of the envelope. You may even tell them to stop sending you mail. When they have to pay $1 for an envelope full of garage and insults on the outside they will stop.

            I now cover my address with electrical tape in addition to labeling it RTS. Who knows if it actually gets sent back to BoA, or if the post office throws them out because there's no destination.

That might make you feel good, but you can also turn tides on them... Send THEM a bill with your own 'processing charge of, say $9.99 for every junk mail you have to open and read.       With a new generation about to come into the work force, any company that acts this way and makes it to the "100 worst companies" list will die a painful and humiliating death. Money hungry fat-cats.


      "Service Fees" for ANY company is simply legal extortion. You agree to be raped by them by signing on the dotted line. A company that sells a service or product should make it a priority to support that service or product, and every administrative or logistic issue that goes with it.


      If your customers aren't satisfied with your company, charging them to fix the problem is not going to increase their satisfaction level. Customers will leave. These companies are complete idiots. That's all I have to say.

Exactly one month and one day after I moved in, I got a bill that showed me more than $200 past due. Including a $99-installation fee for internet. After hours on the phone, being told ***** like, "Well, they shouldn't have said that and we HAVE TO charge SOMETHING, they finally took it off, said they'd send a revised statement for me to pay. While waiting, I got a notice yesterday saying I had to pay the full amount, including the $99, or my internet and TV would be turned off. And it was. YESTERDAY. More time on the phone. I have it back now, but *****, six weeks (as of tomorrow) in this place and have had to deal with Comcast ***** more than once.

        • AriaStar, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3That's what I said to get them to remove the $99-charge the first time, that they can't legally not tell me about a fee, and then charge it later anyway, as it wasn't part of the initial contract and so would put them in the position of breaching the contract and so they'd be liable. It was at that that the manager I spoke with dropped the charge.

          Too bad it wasn't the last of dealing with them.

          When a utility company or service company messes up more than once, they should be legally required to reimburse you for your time spent dealing with their error. Since a lot of people won't want to spend an hour on the phone to get a $2-charge taken off, they're raking it in. If they had to PAY at least minimum wage in compensation, then they'd think twice.

          "Effective January 22, 1999, the Commission amended the rule so that it also applies to rental property where the renter has an exclusive use area, such as a balcony or patio."

          If you don't have a balcony or patio (exclusive use area), you could still be restricted.
          • Nougat, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3It's true, but if you have a patio with a tiny yard, for example, it is perfectly legal for you to stick a pole in the ground and put a dish on it. I believe the amendment was made because the act previously *did not* apply to rental properties *at all.*

            Also, in the case of HOAs, I know there are some out there that try to tell you that you can't put a dish on the front of the house, and that you would not be able to put up a fixed wireless internet aerial at all. Both of those are *****; if you need those fixtures to rx/tx signal, you can put them up - regardless of how unsightly the HOA feels they may be, and without having to pay any fees to the HOA.

After I discovered about 10,000 labels in my junk drawer, I gathered them up, threw them all away, and spend 13 dollars on a custom stamp I can use to put my return address on envelopes.

  • cbs31572, on 02/29/2008, -0/+3Do what I do on every bill I get which sends me inserts (ads)...I just send it back to them along with my payment. I don't have to deal with throwing it away, plus it screws up their machines that separate the checks and payment stubs. :-)

A couple fax lines, the VP of Business Operations for the Houston market, the Senior Vice President and his executive assistant, the president and vice president of public affairs. Lots of good contacts to call next time I have a problem with my service.

Sometimes companies can't be held accountable to their customers, and since every entity in this world ought to be accountable to something, it might as well be to the government.

The entry way to my apartment builiding is tiled with them from people just throwing them on the ground. Assholes. Comcast and the people who live in my builiding... I wonder how much money comcast would save if it stopped sending out those mass mailers?

  • akatherder, on 02/29/2008, -0/+16I called Comcast for pricing one time and the rep wouldn't let me off the phone without ordering. I said no thanks, and he said he would call back to see if I changed my mind. 2 days later a Comcast tech shows up to install our cable. My wife let him in because she assumed I had ordered it and she couldn't reach me at work to verify. I came home and kicked the technician out and threatened to call the police. Eventually I find out that my 4 year old answered the phone and the rep used that as authorization to setup an install.

    And these are the same ***** who made me jump through hoops when I called to add a cable box because my wife's name was on the account instead of mine.
