Posting something stupid on Twirtter is the same thing as telling everyone at a party - someone hears and then tells a friend who knows your boss, who then tells your boss. Just because the medium is electronic makes it no different.
You should be accountable for what you put in the public domain, it's not hard, it's not a breach of privacy, and there's no need to incite some kind of privacy outrage over it. Just have a brain. Posting about slacking at work on a public site is not having a brain. I don't get why the guy was fired for calling Anacostia a ghetto because guess what: 90% of it is. The other 10% is okay or 'up and coming' (and actually looks kinda sweet). But most of it is cookie-cutter ghetto... poverty with high crime.
I hope one day we won't have this fool in office anymore and some real fixes can come to Anacostia. The public forum has the exact record of what you wrote for others to come back and see, whereas the other can be more plausibly dismissed as hearsay.

- emjaymj, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2The thing about civil court as opposed to criminal court is that the judge is able to exercise a lot more, well, judgment. Remember, the quantum of proof required in civil court is far far less. You don't need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the tweets were serious, the judge just has to feel that he was PROBABLY telling the truth. And since anybody with a shred of common sense would feel this way, it's very unlikely the guy has a case here unless there's something major the article isn't telling us about..

I hate not being able to just not use a website if I don't like it.

It should say "Fired for POSTING on Twitter," since he got fired for wasting time at work.
