- AshMessick, on 09/26/2008, -0/+10It would be great to have a nonprofit spot on Digg!
- firestar9s, on 09/29/2008, -0/+9I often find myself having to categorize a post in a second or third choice because there isn't a nonprofit category (and it feels awkward, if not incorrect)! A nonprofit category is needed!
- fruitvale, on 09/26/2008, -0/+9Definitely: it's not just a "good idea," this is vital. Non-profits need Diggers as much as Digg needs the balance and wisdom of non-profits.
- LauraWhitehead, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8Would be great to see a nonprofits/social change area on Digg. I would use Digg a whole lot more then!
- annefio, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6Yes! Unique issues face the sector - especially as the downturn in the economy impacts organizations...a separate category would be very helpful!
- joehungler, on 10/01/2008, -0/+6Non-profits are a huge part of our economy and there are a huge number of blogs and articles about them out there. It should definitely be its own category.
- greentimes, on 09/30/2008, -0/+6YEAH!
- bills71, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5I'm tired of digging items about nonprofits and philanthropy under the "business and finance" category.
- EHarty322, on 10/01/2008, -0/+5Since we're such an active sector, we should have our own category.
- AmyVernon, on 11/16/2008, -0/+4I think it's a good idea. And now that the election's over, the elections category could be taken away, and perhaps a few new categories, including nonprofits, be created. Those worried that news about any org that's simply a 501(c)3 being subbed there, I believe, are overthinking it. There was plenty of election stuff this past cycle that was subbed in other categories. No category is immune from things that don't really fit being placed there. Unless you can absolutely create all your own categories (which simply wouldn't work), then any category will have items subbed that don't quite fit. As they all do already.
- RandalM, on 10/01/2008, -0/+4Please add this category! I've had difficulty categorizing my own Diggs on nonprofit-related topics.
This would be a big help to the nonprofit community as an information resource for ourselves and also reach more people about the issues we face. - uncajoe, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3If it's simply a non-profit 501(c)3 category then all those Yes on Prop 8 sites financed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints would have been able to post there. Same for the Social Change category. Many of the extreme (left and right) wing political groups could also be included in it. The honor system would be the only policing force and there are several groups (Freepers for one) who would never allow such a category without vicious spam attacks!
Good Idea but it won't change anything in the openness of the internet. - cchiovitti, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3Excellent idea!!
- NinaOdell, on 11/16/2008, -0/+3A good idea, but just remember that some pretty extreme folks have nonprofits just like everybody else.
Take the innocuously titled "Media Research Center".They're not only a non-profit, but 501(c)3. If you know a little something about non-profits, that fact is just plain hilarious and odd.
Don't get me wrong - I'm all for it for a variety of reasons. I think it would pretty much have to draw the line on blogs who don't have actual non-profit status, as that would lead to a whole giant mess.
With leads me to this question: how is Digg supposed to regulate this? I'm no IT expert or anything, but it seems like it would be a huge undertaking.
Sorry to be a Debbie-Downer, but before we go and sign a petition or whatever, I think the idea merits a little further discussion. - NinaOdell, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2"...And now that the election's over, the elections category could be taken away.."
Except that a lot more people than just Americans are on Digg. Just Sayin'. - charlottehughes, on 11/16/2008, -0/+2I totally agree!
- AmyVernon, on 11/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, but can you imagine what other categories would have looked like if there hadn't been an Elections category? There was enough Obama/McCain/Palin/Biden (ok, no one dugg anything about Biden) in non-election categories as it was. You would have preferred it even worse?
