- wolfing, on 03/18/2009, -1/+30All those people should send me at least a postcard saying 'Thank you for your tax dollars!'
- trer, on 03/18/2009, -9/+30Time for pitchfork justice.
- Nairebis, on 03/18/2009, -9/+29God people are so stupid. PLEASE people, WAKE UP!! Do you know why the government is making such a big deal about this? Because they want you to pay attention to this relatively paltry sum of money while they saddle you with TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS OF MORE DEBT! Screw AIG! It doesn't matter in the bigger picture!
WAKE UP! Stop getting angry at AIG, and start getting angry at the government! Don't let them distract you!
Why does it feel like I'm screaming into the wilderness? People want their bread and circuses while Rome burns. - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -3/+20CHuchk CHuchk...Regulators.....mount up.
- TheManikin, on 03/18/2009, -3/+18Feel free to call them and suggest they follow Senator Grassley's advice.

Man that makes me feel old. - Neiby, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Interesting. Richard Holbrooke? It sure doesn't hurt having a government insider on the board, does it?
- BESTenemy, on 03/18/2009, -0/+10Senator Barack Obama received a $101,332 bonus from American International Group in the form of political contributions according to Opensecrets.org. The two biggest Congressional recipients of bonuses from the A.I.G. are - Senators Chris Dodd and Senator Barack Obama.
The A.I.G. Financial Products affiliate of A.I.G. gave out $136,928, the most of any AIG affiliate, in the 2008 cycle... A.I.G.’s financial products division is the unit that wrote trillions of dollars’ worth of credit-default swaps and "misjudged" the risk.
Dodd and Obama also received the most campaign contributions from Fannie and Freddie. - robinthehood, on 03/18/2009, -1/+10No offense America, but your system is *****. Take advice from the Canadian way of things. Board of Directors CANNOT be employees of the company. It is a conflict of interest for someone to be a CEO AND on the Board of Directors.
Not rocket science. - cranky71, on 12/01/2009, -2/+10These are NOT the people receiving the bonuses. All the people on that list are receiving exactly $0 in bonuses. Liddy receives $1/year pay and no stock options.
The discussed bonuses are retention bonuses to account managers in a specific arm of AIG (i.e. $1.7 trillion currency swap division - which is not responsible for the company's collapse). AIG is a big company - the people in charge of the sections that got the company in trouble have since been fired.
Of course the public is on such a witch hunt that nobody is stopping to understand the facts. - warpdesign, on 03/18/2009, -3/+11Thanks. Now I know who to direct my fist-o-gram to.
- pathouston22, on 03/18/2009, -0/+7Get off digg then make the phone calls.
I bet you won't. - mytealjacket, on 03/18/2009, -1/+8People upset about something is better than the wide spread apathy we've seen for so long. Something has to wake people up, and it looks like this AIG situation is doing a good job of it.
It's a start. - umahad, on 03/18/2009, -4/+11Hm, they really are all rich old white people...
- cranky71, on 12/01/2009, -0/+7Then the government shouldn't have bailed them out. Without going into receivership, the government can't pick and choose which contracts it feels like honoring.
- richgustavson, on 03/18/2009, -2/+8What is the point of this? My company shares a building with a large AIG office and we have had extra security around the building all week because of all the death threats, etc. I now have to show my ID multiples times a day to get in and out of the building/parking garage because some asshats are threatening these AIG employees. Come on now people....

FAIL...FAIL...FAIL...FAIL...FAIL...FAIL.......... - ecoop3r, on 03/18/2009, -1/+7I definitely agree. It is a huge distraction we are talking 0.09% of the 170 Billion or so dollars. Since most people forget how many zeroes that is let me refresh your memory $170,000,000,000.00. But seriously us posting on Digg does nothing. We need a way for people to collaborate via the internet with mobile phone integration. Like a facebook for politics. You send updates to mobiles via text, send out emails, etc... Someone needs to take initiative and get it started! If we work as one we can accomplish so much more.
- DonAlfred, on 03/18/2009, -3/+8GET 'EM!
- Birukun, on 03/18/2009, -1/+6I agree. I feel like I am watching the lemmings dive headfirst off the cliff. Only thing is, they are being pushed by the government but they don't see that.
There is a reason TV is called 'programming'....... - ElBearde, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5Liddy is a fine exeption to the worthless immoral executives that surround him.
If you had watched Liddy testify before the finacial commitee today you would have heard about the contract that was made by the previous board of directors. It was anticipating that there would be massive losses and specifically stipulated that bonuses would be preserved regardless of the outcome.
That means that either the company was expecting to get government aid, or they were going to abbandon ship and suck the company up for what its worth before the bitch sinks.
But the failure of AIG during a crisis of this magnitude would mean an almost certain collapse of the insurance markets globally.
These people dont deserve to be pitchforked, they deserve to be hanged. - boozedrinker, on 03/18/2009, -3/+8AIG should get the bonuses, and here's why: The Constitution, not just a law, prevents the government from interfering with private contracts, because contracts are the basic building block of the commercial sector. SOOO, if the government were to interfere, it would, in essence, be socialism. And besides, Chris Dodds dumbass wrote a provision into the stimulus package that says they can receive bonuses. Funny how the White House is going against something they wrote into their own stupid ***** bill, eh? Just think if the government started screwing with every contract - NOT GOOD.
It's just too bad it had to happen this way. Thanks Obama! - whiterockbiker, on 03/18/2009, -2/+7Time to set up a uuencode|mail -x script.....
- sluggybuggy, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5No, these guys are as crooked as Bernie Maddof. They burned the company down and specifically wrote their contracts so that they could live like kings off of government welfare when it was bailed out.
- spritom, on 03/18/2009, -0/+5Yes, but not breached. Breaching them would cost even more money.
- AsSubtleAsABrik, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4$.60? Where do you buy your ramen? I just bought 48 packages for 5 bucks at costco.
- spritom, on 03/18/2009, -1/+5On top of that, Congress and the President specifically passed protection for these bonuses in the stimulus plan...
http://www.butasforme.com/2009/03/17/obamas-stimul ...
From page H1412 of the Final Stimulus Bill, “SEC. 111. EXECUTIVE COMPENSATION AND CORPORATE GOVERNANCE:
“(iii) The prohibition required under clause (i) shall not be construed to prohibit any bonus payment required to be paid pursuant to a writte employment contract executed on or before February 11, 2009, as such valid employment contracts are determined by the Secretary or the designee of the Secretary.” - Diggity75, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4173 billion?
How much has the government legislated in Stimulus packages? (Hint: Measured in the trillions of dollars)
That's what the ***** he's talking about. - crobinso, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4I'm just saying that if i make a poor consumer choice, or mis-handle my money no one gives me a trophy or big fat check, I'm not saying that they have directly impacted me, I am actually doing ok finacially I was just exaggerating to prove a point, but apparently that was too much for you to understand.
The sheer scale of how much money they lost because they were greedy it mind boggling. - prossi10, on 03/18/2009, -2/+6Lynch them and their KIDS!!!!!!!!!!
Unfortunately my outrage reserve is depleted! http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/index.jhtml?vide ...
A 0.10 of 1% of the money we've given them for sucking. Should have let them fail. - DangerCollie, on 03/18/2009, -1/+5If you can get MSNBC the head of AIG is answering questions in front of a Congressional panel right this minute. I'm surprised how direct he's being. It's a very enlightening exchange. Some of the Congressional panel are lawyers and they're really posing some interesting questions. He's answering clearly and directly.
It's not as clear cut as a lot of you think. I agree that we seem to be getting ripped off with the bonuses, but maybe not to extent I thought yesterday. It's worth a look if you can tune in. - moose26, on 03/18/2009, -1/+5WABBIT season!
DUCK season!
WABBIT season!
DUCK season!
..... long pause
AIG BOARD OF DIRECTORS season!!!! - moose26, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4and you are surprised by this in what ways again?... :)
- veggiegalactic, on 03/18/2009, -0/+4What companies need to do is buckle down (like the rest of us poor folks paying for all of this) and get the job done. Fix this system of failing economics and bring it up. Look at the CEO of Japan Airlines (JAL). He had his salary slashed to $90K a year to avoid having his company suffer through financial troubles. Yes, thats $90,000. A far cry from the $14.2M. CEOs made on average in 2007. Sure he must have made millions before that. But now, he is being a responsible person and is putting forth his part of the effort to weather his companies hardships. He's looking at the bigger picture.
There has to be some sort of accountability for the terrible decisions companies make. This whole bonus situation is just ludicrous. All this time, I thought you and/or the company had to perform well in order to issue bonuses to its employees.
Payroll officer to board members: Oh it looks like you did a terrible job, and almost brought this company down to bankruptcy. But no worries, heres a $$$K bonus.
All I know right now, is that I want my money back AIG! - DrVic, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3they took my bailout money
they took my rolex
I looked at the CEO and said
"damn whats next?!"
- also feels old - inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3And do what? stand outside their gated community and whiz pass in their SUV? My point is these people probably aren't very approachable to those of us not in their social circle.
- TimDigg, on 03/18/2009, -1/+4Richard Holbrooke? holy *****!
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3he gave a source.
- moose26, on 03/18/2009, -1/+4I think instead of a mob hate mentality we focus our energy to petition, demonstrate and work to get the crooks who started all our troubles as well as those who took bonuses that should not have.. and lock them up in prison and strip them of all their financial assets. Do not go easy on the ones proven to have engaged in illegal and or questionable activities as an example needs to be made if we are to survive total financial disaster.
Do the crime, do the time, lose every single nickel & dime! - zip000, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3Not that it matters, but the lemming thing is a myth; they don't actually do that.
- holzp, on 03/18/2009, -1/+4No the taxpayers are their lottery ticket. AIG is their bagman.
- semperfidoordi, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3I hate these bastards too, but considering the threats against these peoples families, this is down right disgraceful.
- DrVic, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3Lets order a bunch of pizzas to their place!
- sless, on 03/18/2009, -1/+4You do realize they announced that retention bonuses will be granted last November.
http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/d2c5989e-bc12-11dd-80e9- ... - EvolvedAnt, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3Hahaha good one! One would hope this Louis is someone new they hired after the fact, but if not, he is the very LAST person that should get a bonus.
- crobinso, on 03/18/2009, -7/+10If only i had the time to personally call and talk to each one of them about where the f#ck they get off giving out bonuses, but i have to get back to working at my full time job that pays just enough to pay for my small apartment, and my tiny subcompact car, my clothes from the thrift store and the ramen i eat for dinner every night.
- mnocket, on 03/18/2009, -4/+7Disgusting hate mob mentality!
There have been numerous threats of violence directed against AIG and its employees. Sounds like there are many here who wish for violent retribution. Before you strike out you might want to do a little research. For example, I'm betting CEO Edward Liddy is a target for many of you. Are you aware that he was brought out of retirement in 2008 at the request of the government to take the helm at AIG and to try to keep it afloat? Are you aware he is working for free because he feels he is answering a patriotic call to serve his country? Lynch mobs rarely are aware of the facts. Are you people proud?
