- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+13I'm sorry but she lost me right here: "I bought 100 copies of Star Jones' new book at wholesale from the publisher and I arranged for Jones, who was debuting on "The View" at the time, to do a free book signing at my very first career fair. I also formed a marketing partnership with Mademoiselle magazine, allowing it to distribute copies to my career fair attendees."
Because 99.99% of small biz startups don't have the type of luck that scores a celeb for their events etc.... - Spymodhf, on 01/06/2009, -0/+12pro-tip: for a truly successful business, make a fart application for the iphone.

You mean exit strategy of making one gazillion dollars is not realistic? Darn. - TimmyGUNZ, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9Maybe now I can really get my "Jump to Conclusions" mat off the ground...
- BeShirtHappy, on 01/05/2009, -3/+10Thanks for sharing... some good tips.

Anyone suggesting you do anything business related without the protection of a corporate entity to shield your personal assets from liability is doing you a major disservice.

- PhillyOC, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4I started my own business when I was 14. I bought an ounce of weed for $100 and split it up into nicks, doubled my money in 2 days and continued to do that for the next 3 years.
Those were the days. It was more for the rep than the money, but the money wasn't bad either. - MasterChi, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Hmm, once we spend $100 on creating our business can we submit an application for a billion dollar bailout in a few months? I can't wait :D
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4This lady is a shill, and so is every person who professes to know how to get rich. These are trite, common-sense tips that look like their ripped off from About.com.
Here's my one step plan on how to get rich: Sell a get-rich-quick plan.
There's not a big enough shovel to bury this ***** article.
Another reason to hate digg. - Nicklogan, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I like all the 'magic' she spouted off "bought 100 copies of Star Jones' new book at wholesale from the publisher and arranged for a free book signing" and the like. I don't believe that somebody can walk into a wholesaler and get 100 books let alone 50 books for $100. Besides she really didn't produce anything, she more or less organized businesses who were looking for employees and got them all together, and streamline the process. Its not like some businesses where people have an actual product like opening a bookstore or restaurant. But if you have a good business plan I am sure you can find some investors or get a bank loan if you can find one *gasp* trustworthy enough.
- rocke86, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3Jobs talked about in video, $35 pound cake baking and sales, and pet massages. There's a demand for this in a recession?
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3You can start your own business with a dollar. It's just a matter of will, creativity and dedication. Good tips though
- katedog, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3LOL!
- darkism, on 01/06/2009, -1/+499.99% of small biz owners don't have the balls to ask a celeb to appear at their event.
- rivasj, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Anyone who tells you that starting a business is easy or cheap is selling you something.
- OwdenBowden, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2This is such bull ***** that you can smell it from your monitor. Unless you are ***** someone in bussiness / entertainment or you are selling meth - then you are ***** out of luck starting your own business from a C-note.
- Barackalypse, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2The banks don't require you to produce a weapon when robbing them. You also don't even need to know how to write a note demanding money, simply speaking your demand to the teller will be sufficient (you may have to add the words, "this is a stickup"). Of course, remember it is a federal crime and the FBI will probably catch you, so don't do it.
- katedog, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2totally disagree. About five years ago, I used to work for a local media celebrity in Washington, DC. She was inundated with requests to appear at events, speak to groups, cut ribbons, etc. for free, mostly from small business owners who didn't have an endorsement budget.
This woman had luck; being in corporate comm, she also most likely had connections. - rrife, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Well with a $100 I guess you could buy an el-cheapo gun at a pawn shop and get into the business of robbing banks.
- TheKingInYellow, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1my business plan:
for $100 i'll give you something in return. www.monolithcreative.com - diggcommentguy, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Yeah, but it keeps the idiots poor.
Hurray! - inactive, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1hold on i heard something about buying 100 books....i'm pretty sure that's more than $100.......
- SEOtonie, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1$100 ?? ok
- kd1s, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1I've been toying with the idea of starting my own business for a long time now. I've done projections, what-if's, etc. and they all read green. I've even written up a standard contract for support and services and had my attorney look it over and suggest changes.
The thing that stops me is inertia. I know how to promote the business. I just need to get everything in order. - rrife, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Oh I can't wait for the next letter!
- DiggzDE, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Sure, if all of us had the backing of an international TV host and Magazine, I'd say we very well could do it.
But seriously, what are the chances of getting that for a start up? Not very likely for all of us. While her tips were helpful, I think "$100 or less" is a gross exageration to try to get the idea across so people will read. - bb112266, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Either money or time, there is more to having and running a business. The infomercials that you see on television is junk. Nothing is free or cheap in life. There is an old science phrase, "Every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction." If someone wants to make at least a far amount of money, then they must put in more then that to get the results.
- Technopundit, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1"Pet Massage Business??" Like somebody's gonna pay me thirty dollars to pet their dog?
- duggdowncatisad, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1...c...
- Technopundit, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Sure. And just EVERYBODY's hiring these days!!
/s - zacharytelschow, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Actually, the exit strategy of most people is that their business will start showing promise and they'll be bought out by the major player in their industry (GE, Google, Toyota, etc.) for an exorbitant amount of money.
- zacharytelschow, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1I'm not as sure. People often are unwilling to ask for help, but at the same time just ask. It took balls to contact those people and go for it. That's what the vast majority of people lack.
- zacharytelschow, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1The dollar amount kinda gets me. First, registering as an official business with your state costs more than $100 in some cases, and also, this woman wasn't working for up to 3 months (her time line for success). The opportunity costs were certainly much higher.
- zacharytelschow, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Bingo.
- zacharytelschow, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1"I am sure you can find some investors or get a bank loan if you can find one *gasp* trustworthy enough."
Not quite sure what that's supposed to mean. Investors want the people they invest in to succeed, its kind of the only way they can get their money back. And once they sign the check, the investor is showing tremendous trust in you; they're the only one that can get burned in the situation. - chchrob, on 01/13/2009, -0/+0Honestly it is such rubbish "build a website", "print business cards" yeah that really helps without a sound business idea (oh and writing a business plan for a crap idea doesn't magically make it less retarded).
Oh yeah and then there is the whole non existant cash flow whilst working for less than some tool at Mcdonalds.
If you dugg you might like this - I hear you can make big $$ working from home selling ebooks that tell people how to sell ebooks online! - ikenall, on 01/07/2009, -1/+0cool article
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -2/+1It doesn't matter if outlaying lesser money means for financial planning later on down the track. If you get into trouble just ask the government for a bailout, and problem solved.
