- gibbs12dotcom, on 08/14/2008, -4/+80Kidd has a point. If Team USA did that it'd be the top story of the year.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -5/+59This is a collective act by a group of individuals. It was neither funny or "inspirational" and I totally agree that the NBA's American black players would have been crucified over this should they have been the culprits. I wonder what the ***** Yao had to say about it. Translator please!
- Powerfan5000, on 08/14/2008, -1/+53Europe is not being looked down on. No one is. That's the problem. If this were the American Team then the NBA would be levying heavy fines and suspensions, but they are getting away with a blatantly racist photo because they are European. No one is blaming the whole continent. Kidd just wants those players that are in the NBA to be held accountable like there American counterparts would be, and he's right.
- jlee2081, on 08/15/2008, -1/+39Not an isolated incident. Here is the Spanish tennis team doing the same pose
http://tinyurl.com/6g3hln - Innisskillin, on 08/14/2008, -3/+39So true.
- trer, on 08/15/2008, -3/+39Pau Gasol is an NBA player who plays for the Los Angeles Lakers. At all times he is recognized as an Los Angeles Laker and is "in uniform" 24/7 365 especially with the money he makes. The Lakers should punish Gasol since he is hurting their brand especially with the large Asian American population in Los Angeles. Gasol could potentially cost the Lakers money.
Oh and here's the Spanish Tennis team: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/olymp ... - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -5/+38The NBA , if not the IOC itself, should punish any of its players that are on Spain's team for this. Other athletes should find their balls like Kidd and start calling out both the NBA and IOC. This kind of crap is unacceptable, especially in the host country, and it flies in the face of the Olympic's own charter!

Fundamental Principles of Olympism
1. Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of
body, will and mind. Blending sport with culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a
way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for
universal fundamental ethical principles.
2. The goal of Olympism is to place sport at the service of the harmonious development of man,
with a view to promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity.
... - Jhiaxuz, on 08/15/2008, -0/+29It's kind of like blaming Canada for Celine Dion when really it's all Quebec's fault.
- Azimuth1, on 08/14/2008, -18/+46Please stop talking about "Europe" with regards to this issue. Europe is made up of tens of countries with completely different cultures and people. Spain should be looked down on here, not the whole of Europe. Norway and Scotland didn't have anything to do with this, don't lump them and everyone else into the same category.
- nickbr00tality, on 08/15/2008, -3/+26Much respect to J Kidd. He's absolutely right about this.
- Powerfan5000, on 08/14/2008, -2/+20Again, no one is blaming Spain. He just thinks that the NBA players on the Spanish national team need to be held accountable like the American NBA players would be if it were them.
- dakdak900, on 08/15/2008, -1/+19Yao actually speaks English very well.
- dupems, on 08/15/2008, -1/+16@ Your link:
God damn, is Spain full of ***** retards or something? - SexySoftie, on 08/15/2008, -3/+18Interesting Fact: The Spanish Olympic team's apparel sponsor is Li-Ning, a Chinese company founded by the torch bearer who lit the final flame.
I'm Chinese and I find it very offensive, having been subjected to such taunts as a child. Even if this was intended as a harmless gesture, there was the obvious possibility that people would find it offensive. I do not blame the players or the advertisers, but rather on their lack of understanding since their conceptions of the Chinese people are based on media portrayals and not on personal encounters. They should just apologize in public, learn their lesson, and everyone can move on. - inactive, on 08/14/2008, -6/+19Jason Kidd is exactly right here. If Spain is going to whimp out and not disapline its players then so be it, they look weak and pathetic. The NBA has the right to disapline any of its players no matter what country they represent because they also represent the NBA. When this story is spoken about and the NBA players are mentioned they do so by mentioning them as NBA players as well as players on the NBA. I have already lost a lot of respect for the NBA in the past several years but here is a great opportunity for them. They can gain a lot of respect back by punishing these players for their blatant display of racism or continue to look pathetic if they sit back and do nothing. That would not have happened if it was the USA team that did this so why should it be different because it is the Spanish team. And just because they say they did not mean it to be racist does not mean that it was not racist. Any idiot can see this is racism in its purest form.
- whodat807, on 08/15/2008, -0/+13Yeah, all those 'monkey' chants directed at black football players in the Spanish league - that's the result of a tolerant society.
- EatingPaste, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14Same goes for people talking ***** about the U.S. in general even though it's filled with many states with many different cultures and views.
- walbold, on 08/15/2008, -1/+14i sense a little bit of jealously
dont make dumb comments cause you wish you had something as good as the nba - BedPost, on 08/15/2008, -0/+11You guys gave us Elisha Cuthbert. No matter what atrocities your country commits, you'll always be good in my book.
Thank you. - kansai22, on 08/15/2008, -2/+13I am blaming Spain. Spain has a major problem with racism and sporting events that they need to handle. When large groups of fans make monkey sounds when a black player gets the ball or when fans dress up in black face during F1 holding signs with racial slurs on a regular basis I blame the country. Why is this behavior tolerated and why do so many feel that it is OK to engage in this type of racist behavior at sporting events in Spain? Clearly something is wrong within the Spanish culture that so many people feel that his behavior is acceptable.
Update: now the Spanish tennis team has taken a picture slanting their eyes. Something is truly wrong in Spain. - Powerfan5000, on 08/14/2008, -2/+13American players can't play on Spain's team because they're not Spanish. I think you mean NBA players like Pau Gasol should be fined and suspended.
- thomaslw, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10It's well known the top three contenders for the 2016 games are Chicago, Tokyo, and Madrid. I'm thinking that if anything this little stunt will be a big negative for Spain's already dismal chances (three Euro games in a row?). I'd like to see this being the thing that puts them over the top so to speak in terms of flat out being out of contention.
- Pake, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10You're just wishing this was Team USA basketball and tennis so that you could ride our asses like Europeans love to do every minute. Like Kidd says, double standards.
- wukillabee, on 08/15/2008, -2/+11haha spain is one of the most racist countried in the world, try harder next time..
- inactive, on 08/15/2008, -2/+11It's the same thing as making fun of a Jewish person's nose. You just don't do it.
Tell your parents they raised a retard. - quomen, on 08/15/2008, -1/+10Cry Me A River
/Gt. It Right - acid0426, on 08/15/2008, -2/+10Shut the ***** up. What they do is worth what they're paid. People love to watch them, they simply get paid what the market commands you jealous *****.
- TomustPain, on 08/15/2008, -1/+9On the upside, one could view this as flattery, that Americans are held to higher standards, because the world expects better from us!
- Sroek, on 08/15/2008, -2/+10Actually, Jason Williams once spewed racial slurs at some Asian fans who were heckling him during his tenure in Sacramento. He was slapped with nothing but a few thousand dollars in fines. He was going all out making machine gun noises and saying "I'll shoot all ya'll just like in 'Nam and WWII" and called them "slant-eyed *****".
- sat0shi, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Here in Japan whenever a comedian wants to take on the role of a (white) foreigner, he puts on a giant plastic nose. Just sayin'.
- zinc6471, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8i don't find it lighthearted at all because it was done during the Olympics...
- swiftekho, on 08/15/2008, -0/+7The big deal is that the Olympics promote peace and friendship and that borders disappear socially. Why do this picture? Seriously, what good does it do?
- bruin8uclap, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8Pau Gasol will be playing along side Sun Yue this season with the Lakers as well. Despite the official statement by the Chinese Basketball Federation, if I were Sun Yue I'd foul the hell out of Pau Gasol in practice (but I'm a Laker fan so please don't injure him).
- howitt, on 08/15/2008, -1/+8With that way of thinking, why don't we bring back white entertainers wearing blackface,...maybe an update version of Amos and Andy??
If you can't understand as to why this is offensive, then you are part of the problem. - T440, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Hardly, it's just rare to have that discrimination photographed or recorded so that it gets enough people's attention.
- zinc6471, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7yes but it was an major newspaper that ran the photo and orchestrated it. They know full well what they were trying to do. The implications of this falls heavily on the children who see this..
but really this is so bad, reminds me of the "satire" the The New Yorker used.... its ***** and they know it - kansai22, on 08/15/2008, -1/+7Yes they are look on youtube at the mass of fans making racial slurs to black soccer players or what they have done to Lewis Hamilton a f1 driver in Spain.
- Pake, on 08/15/2008, -0/+6They knowingly made a jester that mocks another racial group. How the hell is that not an intentional act of racism?
- Mononuclear, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5what is with the creepy arm coming into the picture on the left?
- zinc6471, on 08/15/2008, -0/+5if you say oriental in front of me i swear i would just grab you by the balls and rip it off... its not bull ***** either or internal tough guy *****...
i ***** hate the word "Oriental" as much as i do with the "N" word...
And btw ***** YOU dumbass *****. - inactive, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6They planned the whole thing. How is it unintentional?
- ry4nsm1th, on 08/15/2008, -1/+6"Oh it is part of our culture" isn't really good enough, they are grown men and should know better. Two of them even play basketball in the United States, and the rest play in many other countries in Europe. They are by no means sheltered and don't know that others might take offense. I'm sure if the Chinese team did something similar to mock Spanish people at the 1992 games they wouldn't like it one bit.
- julesbond007, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4I think it was done in the name of fun as in "we're going to be asians" for that period, but they should have realized that this is prejudice...as for the nba, Kidd is right that they could never do something like that and Coach K wouldn't allow it. The NBA can't do anything about it just because 2 of the players are in it. It has to do with the governing body in the olympics as well as the FIBA.
- zinc6471, on 08/15/2008, -1/+5go take a history lesson:
the term oriental was used mainly used during the gold rush. where many Chinese immigrants were basically slaves.
The fact that you think its ok to use the oriental shows that your ignorant and unwilling to learn. Just because some Asians don't find it offensive, doesn't mean you should use it. As i had said before, the word oriental, falls in with the "N" word, as do most racial words. - thomaslw, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4That's cuz there's a group of Americans called ASIAN AMERICANS that are the most offended by this. Chinese in China would not have any idea on the significance of the slant eyed mock.
- Hetman, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4You are right. That is what I mean.
- ariza, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4Ricky Ricardo was Cuban
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+4and I know that discipline is spelled wrong but for some reason when I changed it, it was not corrected and now I have timed out so I can not change it now.
- jaxcs, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4How is it that you can see that the team from spain are acting like ***** yet you still want to give the action cover? Also, the article and most most people here don't use the word racist, you do.
- thomaslw, on 08/15/2008, -0/+4It's not significant to them because they never grew up with other ethnic groups (whites, blacks, etc) doing this to them during elementary school. Therefore they have no awareness of why it is considered offensive, despite knowing it's meant to be mocking.
