- magawake, on 06/04/2008, -2/+24He was a good coach, IMO
- postingbh, on 06/04/2008, -1/+13As a Pistons fan, every time I see them lose in the Eastern Conference Finals, I get more pissed that Ben Wallace chased the money to Chicago. He was the stopper that really held their defense together. Ever since he left, they just haven't been quite the same; and neither has he.
- threemagic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+7If Billups goes it would be Stuckey who replaces him. If Joe is going to get high priced talent he'd be better served to get a dominant post guy. Dice has made a fine return to being a good player but he'll never be the beast that was 1998 Dice.
Just, for the love of God Joe, do NOT hire your old friend Isiah!!! - amcerece, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6When will digg users figure out that when the article doesn't interest them, they don't have to read it?
- jimmies, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6Flip is just a scapegoat. At what point do you start looking at the leadership on the team (Chauncey, Rip, Rasheed) and asking them the hard question?
I have a hard time thinking Detroit's loss in the playoffs this year had anything to do with Flip's calls. They got beaten by a better team. - Lighthater, on 06/04/2008, -0/+6Yes, because no one else in the ENTIRE world likes basketball.
- Jeffler, on 06/04/2008, -2/+7After a while it gets depressing to chant "WE'RE NUMBER FOUR! WE'RE NUMBER FOUR!"
- MasterPlayer, on 06/04/2008, -1/+5Why? His team consistently made it to the Eastern Conference Finals the past 4 years, is that not good enough?
- reed311, on 06/04/2008, -0/+4This is an American site. When it becomes digg.co.uk, then maybe you'll have a case. I don't go to the bbc and complain about the overwhelming coverage of the UK. Come on now.
- YuriSakazaki, on 06/04/2008, -4/+8He was a good coach, but a good coach doesn't cut it when you have talent like the Pistons do. You need a great coach, which Flip just isn't.
- RyanP, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3How could he end up in Boston? The only players that can be traded in return for Billups would be Ray Allen or Paul Peirce and they are not going anywhere nor do they fill any holes for the Pistons.
- smokeymcdank, on 06/04/2008, -0/+31. True, however the eastern conf. was ***** the years that they went to the finals. Since then the eastern conference has gotten better every year. First LeBron, and more recently KG and Ray Allen there is much more competition. Not to mention that Detroit lost Ben Wallace and some key role players.
2. Since when is Chris Webber an authority in the league. Did he ever make it to the finals.
3. I am bias, I have been a fan of Flip b/c I live in MN, and like KG, he has kind of had some bad luck. - magawake, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3how so? He had a great year this year. The almost made it to the finals which is a tough task in the NBA (or any professional sport)
- Y2JCrisis, on 06/04/2008, -0/+3We have high expectations. The year before Flip came, the Pistons went to two NBA finals in a row. They haven't been back since. Sorry, not good enough.
Also, I wouldn't mind seeing Chauncey go as long as Agent Zero is the guy replacing him. - TheThirdLevel, on 06/04/2008, -2/+5Flip wasn't a horrible coach, but I guess people got pissed that we made the playoffs like 3 years in a row without winning the finals.
Sucks to be him. - misterdrumz, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2I'm not surprised, from the beginning of the sereis against boston their own fans boo'ed the team for not taking the lead. It's laughable how two-faced the pistons fans were.
I feel bad for Flip considering his side did what no other could against us, beat us at home. Considering the atmosphere at the Boston Garden you have to give it to him for motivating a team to beat Boston at home.
I sincerely hope he joins a more loyal team next year, he is a great coach. - smokeymcdank, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Indeed, I do not understand why sports teams are so quick to fire these guys. Flip did a pretty good job and I would bet that they will have a worse record next year under Curry. What happened to the good old days when keeping coaches around gave them time to mold the team and shape their system. Some of the best coaches of all time have only won one or two Championships.
- xJORDANx, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2I think Wallace is next to go on that team.
- Spamzfolife, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2He WAS a good coach, active word being WAS. But if you are a team with such a high rep. for being great, and you haven't even made it to a championship in a few years let alone win one, Detroit has talent, unfortunately, Flip could not utilize that talent properly to make it all the way, whose to blame the pistons for firing him?
- misterdrumz, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Since the entire team has been put up for trade I'd love to see Chauncey Billups join his friend KG at Boston, I think we could let Cassell go, use Billups as starting Point guard with Rondo and House being 2nd and 3rd guard respectively.
Also, I'm form the UK and prefer hearing stories like this rather than the barrage of election drama that has invaded Digg.com - crowbar77, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Wasnt this like the 6 year in a row? You only have a winning team for so long and obviously it wasn't working. Almost there isn't good enough in pro sports.
- threemagic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+22 NBA games had more viewers then the Superbowl this year (Houston vs Milwaukee 1 & 2 in the REGULAR season). Why? Because China watched. Apparently they are part of the US now? Good... we could use em.
- MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Good call on Stuckey replacing Chauncey (if necessary).
or trade Rip/Tay for a big fella and let #1 and #3 start?
How do you guys feel about Avery Johnson? I think it would be a sweet pick-up - MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Ray Allen sucks
It was Detroit's lack of rebounding (or Bostons good rebounding) that was the difference maker.
Also Rasheed sucks and Prince would eat up the whole shot clock holding the ball. How many times did he dribble/pass/shoot in less than 5 seconds after catching the ball? -> 1
Both teams are poorly coached
(Piston fan's response) - RyanP, on 06/04/2008, -0/+2Tell it to Joe D.

Not a stupid rickroll btw - chookalana, on 06/04/2008, -1/+3Good, now he can go back to the Timberwolves and help them not to suck....
- PasteEater, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1misterdrumz-
Why in the world would we trade Chauncey to Boston? What would we get in return?
While you're at it, why not Kobe? Or Dwayne Wade? - akamurph, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1nah, they'll still suck!
- robertallen, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Joe Dumars knows what he's doing. If you heard his announcement of the firing yesterday, he basically echoed the feelings of many frustrated Pistons fans. Flip isn't the only one at fault for what has happened. The complacency and overconfidence of the starters seemed like they were content with their 2004 accomplishments was enough to cause Joe Dumars to do something. It seemed to me the only players that were busting their tail in the postseason were the ones who weren't a part of that 2004 NBA Championship (McDyess, Maxiell, Stuckey). Flip was too much of a "nice guy" to get in the faces of these players and fire them up.
Flip is still a good coach, but wherever he goes, his playoff coaching will always be in question...though coaches Larry Brown had the same problem for many, many years in the postseason until he finally won an NBA Championship in 2004 after over 20 years or more of coaching in the NBA. Hopefully, Flip will find the right fit for himself. But he'll get a job again, no doubt.
Joe won't blow it up completely, but he's going to find the right coach that will get them back to the finals. I personally hope it's Avery Johnson. - robertallen, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1The Atlanta Journal Constitution has reported the Pistons have called Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson in regards to the opening. The Pistons have denied this report. Knowing what Woodson has done with Atlanta Hawks (eesh)...I sure hope this isn't what Joe has in mind.
- MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1good should have been changed to okay
Otherwise, I agree - duniyadnd, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1It's funny how so many teams seem to be moving forward, or at least feel they need to implement a change, whereas the Knicks still seem the same as ever.
As for the stories comment - Time for digg to create local version? - MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Flip was fired because he screwed up many times.
No adjustments were made and the Pistons were always getting out rebounded, nor could they close out a game.
These have been problems for 3 years. Coincidentally Flip was coaching for the last 3 years... - georgemason01, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Wallace hurt the Pistons and himself. It was one of the low points in Pistons history (I'm also a fan) because they built the team around him, and they are still recovering.
- MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1If Doc is such a good coach how come this is called one of the biggest turnarounds in basketball?
Its not the coach its the Paul Pierce and KG (with a little bit of Ray Allen) - MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1and the Pistons didn't win them so agreeing with you...they don't mean a thing
- georgemason01, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1Ha. I'd rather have Laimbeer.
- threemagic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1@magman: i have no problems with avery but the pistons need a motivator.. not a coach.
- athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -0/+1Going on the post above me:
"Hey there is an article about basketball. I don't like basketball. I have no interest in basketball. Ok, time to click on the article and take a look."
Where is the ***** logic here you moron???? Is somebody forcing you to look at digg articles? - Dantetheinferno, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1They have made it filterable Go to your profile > customize topics > uncheck anything you never want to see (I have all videos and images unchecked, along with U.S. politics). There's a single button to get rid of all sports.
- MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Conference Finals...which doesn't mean a thing
- inactive, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2Sweet. Now they can hire Isiah!
- mjanning, on 06/04/2008, -1/+2I dont understand how they can fire a guy for bringing the team within one series of playing for the NBA title. You don't see Final Four coaches getting fired!
- etx313, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1Oooohhhh Zing...
- MagMan68Classic, on 06/04/2008, -0/+1"He's done great work developing the pistons bench"
- Part of why he got fired is because the young guys didn't play enough in the regular season
"he motivated veterans like dice and hunter to play a great playoff series."
- Dice has yet to win a ring and Hunter is on the team specifically for the playoffs - georgemason01, on 06/05/2008, -0/+1I think Dumars wants to bring in a "players coach"...someone like Doc Rivers for instance. Michael Curry will probably be the next coach. He was a Pistons player not long ago, is still a players union official, and is respected by the players.
