- funknjunk, on 11/04/2008, -1/+27This is good for Detroit either way. With AI they have a go to guy who will knock down shots and take it to the rim. He's a star the Pistons have been lacking. They look like legitimate contenders in the East now. Even if it fails, this will be AI's last year on his contract and the Pistons will have 20-25 mil in capspace to pursue some one else, which is particularly appealing with the huge Dwade, Bosh, Lebron sweepstakes next season.
- Krillin, on 11/03/2008, -3/+25as a celtics fan, i thank joe dumars for this! chauncy is a winner, a team player, not to mention him and rip hamilton are great friends.. now ya got.. a.i. and rasheed? hahahaha. the path to the finals just got easier, now if only lebron would leave town
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -2/+24Huge Trade!
- Boooohjoke, on 11/03/2008, -0/+19Interesting trade, I don't know if it will make Detroit a better team. I think it will help Denver.
- AJL221893, on 11/03/2008, -1/+15It might set the Pistons back short term, but in 2010 they'll be freed up and able to sign some big free agents. Good long term move for the Pistons, good short term for Denver.
- Ljay90, on 11/03/2008, -1/+12Apparently, the formula is:
(1 MVP & 8 Time All-Star & Rookie of the Year & 2 Time All Star Game MVP) = (1 Finals MVP & 3 Time All Star) + (1 Time All-Star)
ERROR. DOES NOT COMPUTE. - oatdc, on 11/03/2008, -0/+10"not a game...practice"
- DickyT83, on 11/03/2008, -0/+9As a fellow celtics fan I have to agree. Why break up a team that's proven to make it the distance even if they aren't winning it all every year? AI's a great player for sure, but man, chauncey's a proven winner.
- oatdc, on 11/03/2008, -0/+8I wonder if Detroit used artificial intelligence to make this deal.
- csonjeow, on 11/04/2008, -1/+8Let me just say...the Bad Boys are back!
- xOKxWhy, on 11/03/2008, -0/+7Didn't see this one coming
- indraneel24, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7But AI has only one year on his deal left. This means the Pistons clear 20 million in salary cap space while getting a former MVP for a year. They were going nowhere with their old team, as proven in past playoffs, and this gives them not only a fresh change in personnel and style, but a bonafide chance to make a splash in the 2009 or 2010 free agent seasons.
IMO good long term move on Dumars's part. - blackinthmiddle, on 11/04/2008, -0/+7I'm guessing that Detroit is thinking long term. Iverson is an expiring contract. Chauncey had a lot more money coming to him. From what I've been reading, Detroit really thinks Stuckey can do the job at point and will be the future pg. They can use the money they clear by trading Billups to go after a free agent.
- Ljay90, on 11/03/2008, -3/+9Detroit's GM should be fired after this. Conversely, Denver's GM should be rewarded.
- mikeevegas, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6best post yet.
- idontlikeyou2, on 11/04/2008, -0/+6The biggest problem for Denver ? George Karl.
- theghoul, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6Look deeper people.
This is not about Iverson. This is about LeBron James in 2010. Joe Dumars will have the salary to meet the cap. Lebron would love to come to a championship town to get out from under Kobe's shadow.
Dumars has a evil plan that may work. Go Detroit! - lotar732, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6Look at their salaries, and when their contracts run out. When you look at that, you realize how good this is going to work out for Detroit (AI off the cap this year) vs Denver (stuck with aging Billups ridiculous contract for 3 years).
Denver: Gets a true point guard capable of handling the ball in the clutch, gives room for Carmelo to truly shine. They lose some explosiveness, but gain with a strong guy on the inside (McDyess) that gives them a chance to compete in the West.... basically, Kenyon Martin sucks. Big Con with this trade is that they are stuck with Billups ridiculous contract for three more years.
Detroit: Rodney Stuckey looks fantastic whenever he is given playing time, which he will get more of now that Billups is out of the picture. They can put AI off the ball at the two where he belongs, and with him/Rip running around, itll be hard to guard them all. This team gets better offensively with AI, but in the clutch, it may hurt not having Billups out there. The massive plus for Detroit in this trade is AI's contract is done after this year.
I'd say Detroit makes out way better in this trade. Neither team improves enough to compete in their respective conference this year, but with AI's contract expiring at the end of this year, Detroit has plenty of cap space to devote to younger talent going forward. By virtue of this trade, the Nuggets MIGHT be a 6-8 seed this year, and are screwed for the next two years when Billups becomes a lead weight on the roster.
Or maybe I'm wrong. I haven't checked the salary figures lately, and I'm writing this as fast as I can. - drinkdrankdrunk, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5Finally someone understands what Dumars is trying to do here. sheesh.
- Apocalyptic0n3, on 11/04/2008, -1/+6It isn't about this year. We'll have $22 million of cap space to go after LeBron or Bosh or any number of free agents in 2010 without so much as missing a step next year without AI or Rasheed. And, on top of this, we do have a chance this year. Name one player in the league who is as hungry for a championship as AI is.
- username7410, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5Kinda lopsided in Denver's favor here! Iverson isn't going to help Detroit win a championship again, that's for sure.
- Apostacy, on 11/03/2008, -0/+5....PRACTICE...
- mikeevegas, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5you are out of your mind. Chauncy and McDyss are washed up, and AI is in the last year of his contract so if he doesn't work out not biggie. Joe Dumars is one of the best GM's in the league hands down.
- Hardrockshero, on 11/04/2008, -0/+5Finally J.R. Smith gets to start. That man is talented
- techguru2006, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4Oh hell yeah!! Watching games in Auburn Hills will be more exciting. Tayshaun, Sheed, Rip, and A.I. is a crazy combo. Chauncey's crazy free throw stats will be missed though.
- whuddadumbsn, on 11/04/2008, -0/+4WTF, Detroit? You're doing it wrong!
- IHaveCrayons, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3I think this will help the Nuggets. We already know that having two crazy scorers (Carmelo and AI) on the floor just isn't going to win games (well enough games in the west.) They clearly needed a change and to get a veteran like Billups is probably the best they could do. I don't know how the Pistons chemistry will work out with AI and Wallace but I still expect the Celtics to destroy them.
- seanpackage, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3There is no way Lebron is going anywhere
- sfcaptainrob, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3You just remember that comment when Chris Bosh and LeBron are putting on Pistons uniforms! Well, maybe just Chris Bosh...
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3The only reason the Nuggets didn't explode with the addition of Iverson was their ***** defense. Pistons are a pretty good defensive team, and adding the 30 pts/game that Iverson can put up is going to really help the Pistons. However they're gonna need another big man to step up...
- aliasfallen, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3As NOT a Celtics fan, I have to agree too. Iverson is a great player but he can't play defense worth *****. Plus the style of play of Detroit is so different than Iverson's style. How is it going to work? I guess Iverson will need to practice now.
- schmons, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3detroit shuffling the cards for the future, Rodney Stuckey is their man now that billups is out of the way. makes a lot of sense to me
- stopbrorape, on 11/04/2008, -0/+3They have the Birdman.
http://msnbcmedia3.msn.com/j/msnbc/Components/Phot ...
They'll be all right. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2i think Detroit made good... ***** billups
- getatmedigg, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Question is, can Carmelo play with Chauncey?
- ptFoe, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2and ***** in the head
- jaybol, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3i remember watching chauncey billups on tv when he played high school ball in denver, and being happy that he stayed in state to go to CU Boulder...it is so awesome that he is going to be a Denver Nugget now!
- unclecaveman, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3PRACTICE? PRACTICE. We're talking about Practice....
- Jerky1312, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Brooklyn doesn't look like they are going to pick up the Nets.
- HarrisonBn, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2and talented as *****.
- pimphofoo, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Huge trade for both. The trade allows AI to move to the only team in the league that can probably absorb AI's gambling, lane playing defense (the pistons are strong everywhere else and he has protection in the middle). Meanwhile the Nuggets need bench depth for the inevitable K-Mart and Nene injuries, while also getting a true point guard instead of a hybrid as AI was.
- redfred18t, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I ***** hate taco fans...
- blackinthmiddle, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3It will definitely help Denver. Chauncey is a true "pass-first" point guard.McDyess, if not for his knee problems which basically robbed him of a lot of his career, would have been a great post up player. Even so, he's serviceable coming off the bench.
Iverson is a unique talent and a great player. However, if he ever wins a championship, it will be when his skills diminish to the point where he's nothing but a marginal player because he's 2 guard in a point guard's body. He needs the ball all the time and his "feast-or-famine" type of game is great for padding his stats but is not winning basketball. - Elliuotatar, on 11/04/2008, -1/+3I read that as Alien Invasion Traced to Detroit.
- A2TrueBlue, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Detroit has reached the Eastern Conference Finals in each of the last 6 years. In that span only Miami has been there more than once (2 - 04/05 & 05/06) out of the Eastern Conference. To blame anything on Joe Dumars at this point is ridiculous.
If you look at the scenario the teams are in I believe the actual trade is a push (essentially AI for Billups since McDyess' contract will most likely bought-out) but what you gain is about $18 million in cap savings after this year is up. With Detroit's young talent taking off and a slew of great free agents coming out in the next few years this is a perfect move to both go for another championship this year and free up cap space to sign one or two major free agents in a year or two. - motang, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Detroit's loss IMO!
- stevenk87, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1The real story: one of the best run organizations in the NBA will have enough cap room in a few years to sign a Grade A Free Agent in 2010.
- NetierZero, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1I read that the Nuggets are buying out the option on McDyess' contract and releasing him into free agency...it doesnt make much sense to me. The only thing i can think is that Detroit really wanted to get rid of him and the only way the Nuggets could get the trade was if they took McDyess as well.
- mojotooth, on 11/04/2008, -0/+1Chauncey gets to play in his hometown now. Cool.
