- yaz990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is apparently true. I live in Scranton, PA, and the rumors are strong that the Yankees are signing here on Monday. Good thing, with the Phillies moving to Ottawa.
- Anubis2051, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I live not to far from the Trenton Thunder, and I have to say, it is a lot of fun going to a minor league game, not as much as a major league one, but still fun.
- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, particularly if you realize how long Baseball has been played for. And specially if you take in to account how long the Yankees have existed and how long The House that Ruth Built has been up!
- dirtybbq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think minor league affiliations that produce a team's number one starting pitcher, an all-star second baseman, most valuable player in all of baseball over the past 10 years and oh, Derek Jeter are worth keeping around. Not to mention Melky Cabrera who filled in admirably almost all year. Add Philip Hughes to the mix next year and the rotation's top two pitchers will be homegrown.
- letterten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the clippers would be building the stadium, not the yankees. columbus is a good minor league baseball town -- someone else will affiliate with 'em. in other news: in case you didn't notice, yankees have won squat since 2000. there isn't a salary cap in baseball cuz the players association will never let it happen. there is a luxury tax, in which the yankees pay more into than the payroll of the royals. quite sick of hearing about yankees buying a championship -- six of their starters are homegrown talent. look at the orioles - they've got big time cash, yet they've sucked for the last decade.
i hope columbus baseball doesn't disappear. - cwilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I am another Scranton area resident and I've been hearing the rumors about the Yankees move here as well. For anyone interested, here's an article from one of our local news stations: http://wnep.com/Global/story.asp?S=5413468

- livestradamus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sad, because The Yankees won all their recent World Series's on the backs of players that came up through their farm system (minor leagues). Jeter, M. Rivera, Bernie Williams, etc.
Yes they had help during those yrs by picking up some great players from other teams but they won because of the core players from their far system. Ever since they started picking up players left and right and paid them phenomenal amount of money they haven't won ish.
Oh well... - ForfeitTheGame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That means the Mets, Nats, and Orioles have to pick from Norfolk, Columbus, and New Orleans. (Prays the Mets end up re-signing with the Tides)
- Trini2daBone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The stadium hasn't started construction, it was only just announced in february of 2006.
- cathars1s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know who won't allow the salary cap?
THE PLAYERS. They have no intention of seeing their salaries curbed. Every owner would love to see a salary cap - Steinbrenner pays out exorbitant fees because he knows that the New York fans will accept nothing less than 100% commitment. If he could hide behind a salary cap, he'd be content with it.
The players are the reason that there is no salary cap in baseball. - iamskew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1bummer for columbus... I didn't think they built the new stadium yet though...
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The didn't, at least it isn't opening till 2008.
- form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I hate this argument. Yes, the Yankees have a 200million+ salary.
Have they won in the last 6 years? No, so who cares? Teams like the Marlins (15ish mil payroll) are doing very well.
This argument is not valid. I can see it being valid only if the Yankees win every single year, year after year. But they're not. They're not even making it to the world series year after year. - redsox32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1liquidlife, the yankees have not won their divion for 10+ straight years, they have for 9.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The Yankees not winning the world series is not nessesarily the whole issue here. The fact that they win the division and/or make it to the playoffs every single year for 10+ years makes it a rather unfair deal"
Yeah the Devil Rays might as well just abolish their team because they have no chance of *ever* winning that division. But if you took a similar team from another league, say, the Houston Texans, I'd be willing to bet that Houston will win their division sometime in the next five years or so. Thats the difference between the MLB and the NFL. - StudlyDego73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just posting to further confirm that there have been major rumblings about the Yanks possibly coming to Scranton. I'd hate to see the Phils leave here(yet another Scrantonian), but at least we'd get a team that can win.
- dirtybbq, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I guess I was trying to say that many people overlook the fact that many of the Yankees most significant contributors are homegrown players. Yes, they play in New York City and have an owner who is willing to lose money to potentially improve the team which gives them an advantage over other teams. But I don't think you can blame the Yankees for making deals because of some unwritten rules that say it's bad for baseball. I don’t think that’s how business works.
- jgtg32a, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Yankees Suck
- ephemere, on 10/12/2007, -11/+11Why even have a Triple-A team? Why even have minor league affiliations at all? The rest of the Major Leagues is the Yankee farm system. They are basically an all-star team.
It's time for a salary cap in MLB... - form3hide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@liquilife --
Still, the point is not valid. They started winning the AL east with homegrown talent. Only within, what? the last 6ish years have they won with 'bought' talent. And the bought talent has only brought them so-so results. - jaimemberart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah, I'm from NEPA too. I've been waiting to hear something solid. I was hoping for the Mets to move their AAA club to the Mountain.
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Your statement is very true. I know the Yankee fans hate to hear it but it is an old fact that the Yankees have been using other MLB teams for their farm system for a number of years now.
Salary cap would be great but unfortunately for baseball the media relies on the Yankees to be in the running for the world series to keep ratings up. One of the many reasons why baseball sucks. I love the game. I hate the MLB system. - momthegeek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The fact the Yankees don't win the world series year after year only proves it takes something more than deep pockets to be truly successful in baseball (and in life).
You can't buy heart ! - nohart, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4A salary cap would do baseball more harm than good. Everyone loves to hate the yankees because of their deep pockets. If they were on the same level as everyone else people would loose interest.

gunshops_111@yahoo.com - Dallas70, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I disagree, in fact I'd say it's the reason why people lose interest in that a majority of teams have little hope after April.
Some things IMO that will help the game:
- Players from outside the US must pass through a draft before becoming a free agent, no more Cuban players defecting to another county then signing with 1 or 2 teams.
- Salary cap AND a MINIMUM salary cap (The minimum is the stickler, as long as teams are refusing to invest in their team those teams with no hope in May will always be in the same rut)
- 75% of any money sent to a lesser payroll must be invested in marketing the team (I can't take credit for this, Mark Cuban made this quote). No more billionaires pocketing extra funds while squeezing their team and fans
- No more no-trade clauses (But this is a pipe-dream, will never happen)
- Salary limit for draft picks, this will allow teams like Kansas City to be able to draft who they want instead of who they think they'll be able to sign (Again will never happen so long as High Schoolers have the option of college)
- Stronger steroid testing (Looking at the current policy makes me sad to be a baseball fan, joke is not a strong enough word to describe how bad it is). - liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1@form3hide: The Yankees not winning the world series is not nessesarily the whole issue here. The fact that they win the division and/or make it to the playoffs every single year for 10+ years makes it a rather unfair deal. Is it because they know how to built talent? They've had some success just like most other MLB teams but for the most part they import talent, not build it.
- dirtybbq, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I replied to the wrong comment.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1"Sad, because The Yankees won all the recent World Series's on the backs of players that came up through their farm system (minor leagues). Jeter, M. Rivera, Bernie Williams, etc."
6 years ago is recent in baseball? - Anubis2051, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4Uh-Huh, Thats why were 11.5 games ahead of Boston in the AL East...
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1So you listed a couple of players farmed from Minor league. Now account for the rest of the team. Surely you can't deny that the Yankees have used their bottomless pit of funding to build a consistent all-star team?? They have a roster that a majority of other teams could NOT afford to help put some numbers in the win column.
