coedmagazine.com — As Ken Griffey Jr. storms towards the historic mark of 600 home runs, we take a look at some of the game ’s young studs and predict who’s next to make a serious run at 600+. After all, 600 is the new 500 or is it?

- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Actually the way things are going, A-Rod, Ryan Howard and Ken Griffey Jr will probably pass Bonds sooner or later.
- Yuska, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1ARod probably will, but neither Howard nor Griffey will come close. Griffey will be lucky to get 650 before he's done, and Howard simply doesn't have the pop.
- aarongzmn, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2haha, what the heck? Howard doesn't have the pop? Really? Im pretty sure he is AVGing 50 HR's the last 2 years.
- Yuska, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Its not hard to average 50 in three MLB seasons. In addition to that, as Stu said earlier, he started baseball at young age, so he simply CANNOT break the record.
- StuTheMeatMan, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1He started baseball at like 27 though.
- aarongzmn, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yah, Im not saying he will get to 600, Im just saying that he has tons of pop.

- castevens, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5I think, along with the obvious reason of the steroid scandal, this was a large reason as to why I wasn’t hanging on every pitch with Barry Bonds’ chase for the record. With Alex Rodriguez doing what he is doing, it’d be a shame if he didn’t annihilate the record.
On a side note, I am a huge Red Sox fan, and I think there is no way David Ortiz gets even close to 600. He’s not even half-way there yet anyway.- whoomp123, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2I agree David Ortiz's body type will break down before he hits 600
- sleeknerve, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1i agree, manny is much more likely
- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1"Annihilate the record"??
It took him 14 years to get to 500 home runs, he's probably got another 8-10 years left in him. He would be lucky to TIE Bonds' record.- castevens, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1It took him LESS than 13 years to get to OVER 500 HR. He has hit 522 HR in a little over 13 years. You said he has 8-10 more years left on him.
AT EIGHT MORE YEARS, MATHEMATICALLY, HE WILL HIT 843 HR! I'm sorry if Barry Bonds is your hero, but that is total annihilation. 10 years, mathematically, gives him 923.
- castevens, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1It took him LESS than 13 years to get to OVER 500 HR. He has hit 522 HR in a little over 13 years. You said he has 8-10 more years left on him.

- Ajajadude, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6I had always hoped Griffey, Jr. would be the one to break Aaron's record...I always loved his swing. It's a thing of beauty.
- sovereign3, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Back in my ball playing days, I used to emulate his style of swing. It's the graceful swing in baseball.

- rdubya44, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Record for quietest 600th homerun: Ken Griffey Jr.
- Miamisun, on 04/30/2008, -0/+15The lack of Miguel Cabrera Disturbs me.
- Berzerker7, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1Miguel Cabrera doesn't deserve to be in this list.
- darthschriver, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Ya he has big time power and he is like 22, no doubt about it
- Miamisun, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1He has 143 HRs at 25yoa. If he hits an average of 36HRs a year(which is not a lot for a good HR hitter) and plays till he is 38 than he will have hit 600. If he averages in the low 40's than he can get there by 36.
- PolymathicMan, on 04/30/2008, -6/+1In the butt?
- opensourcer, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Other than the hitter's power, we should also consider longevity. Most of the hitters on this list can hit 50+ home runs a year but can they do it consistently for a decade?
- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2Ryan Howard should be on this list
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Ryan Howard started too late, He is already over 28 and he does not even have 150 yet.
- sleeknerve, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1exactly, hes already in his prime
- sleeknerve, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2he plays for the phillies, anyone on the phillies could hit 600 homers
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Ryan Howard started too late, He is already over 28 and he does not even have 150 yet.
- BayAreaDAWG, on 04/30/2008, -6/+1JUSTIN UPTON!!! Give me a Break!!!
Why dont you just put Hanley Ramírez and while your at it put Carl Crawford.
Do you know anything about baseball- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2The best part is that they called him a lock! He only has 583 home runs to go!
- GregFD3S, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1John Bowker should be on this list too! He only has 597 home runs to go too!
- huxleyan, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2If Pujol's elbow holds up for a while and then, when he finally has to have surgery it heals nicely, he could easily beat the record.
- darthschriver, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Ya but with every swing in pain he is doing more damage, he could hit a BIG speed bump here if he has to have a major surgery because he wouldn't just can a season and get it fixed. But no doubt he will be one of the greats when its all said and done.
- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -4/+2Manny Ramirez isn't on the list? Maybe because he's not so young but Manny should have close to 530 homers after this season and he should get more than 600 before he retires.
Manny is one of the top 2 or 3 hitters of the past 30 years. He may even be #1 because he puts up AMAZING numbers during the post-season, MUCH better than A-Rod or Barry Bonds during the post-season.
On a personal note, when I was in high school Manny's HS team (which was ranked #13 in the country at the time) played our team a couple of times. In one game, Manny hit two towering homers off our best pitcher (who was the the #1 pitcher in the county at the time).- mooseontheloose, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3"Maybe because he's not so young"
"Top 7 Young Baseball Players Likely To Hit 600 HRs"- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1no *****, why do u think i said that dumbnut?!?
- midejitsu, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2A-Rod’s on the list. He’s on the wrong side of thirty.
- HandsomeRuss, on 04/30/2008, -6/+1I guess you have never heard of McGwire, Griffey, Bonds, Arod, Schmidt, Palmeiro, Frank Thomas and so on. All more dominate than that tool Manny.
- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -4/+2Yeah I've heard of them. And they all suck compared to Manny. All of them....
With the exception of Frank Thomas, Manny has more world series rings then all of them COMBINED.
Haha, Mike Schmidt....I can't believe ur comparing him to Manny. Damn, u suck. - Ourcellardoor, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3Roids much? Don't compare McGwire, Bonds and Palmeiro to Manny.
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Your research sucks because you said Manny has more rings then all of them combined...You might want to check 1980 for Schmidt and 1989 for Mcgwire.
- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1@logan: oh my bad, u actually think i researched that? it was totally off of memory. i totally forgot about mcguire pre-steroids.
well then, in terms of rings, Manny = all of them (sans Thomas)combined. thus Manny >>>> any of them individually.
- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -4/+2Yeah I've heard of them. And they all suck compared to Manny. All of them....
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0Manny would have to hit 41 homers in 08 to break 530, he has only done that three times in the last 9 years.
- xmod3, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1@logan074: Manny's on a tear this seaon. Plus its the last year of his contract so he should be locked on most of this year. If he stays healthy he should hit at least 35 homers easy which would put him within striking distance of 600 with 2-3 seasons.
- darthschriver, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1the point here is the list is of "young" players, which Manny is not
- mooseontheloose, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3"Maybe because he's not so young"
- LifeIsARhythm, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6It is 4 players not 7.
- HandsomeRuss, on 04/30/2008, -4/+5Upton? Morneau? uhh are you kidding me?
Was this article written by Joe Morgan or something?- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1He said Morneau wouldn't reach 600.
- Emilio8605, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1You really have to see Upton on a day to day basis. The guy has great power and a quick bat. As he matures and starts learning pitchers more, he'll maintain consistently high HR numbers.
- getisboy, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1so far he has 7 hr in 237 AB... it's a little early to tell
- acdcfanbill, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I dunno, Morneau is on a pretty fair pace for his first 5 years, if he keeps improving he might well hit 600.
- alexkriegsmann, on 04/30/2008, -6/+1no derrek lee? inaccurate as *****.
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0I hope that is sarcasm because Lee is about the same age as AROD and has less then 250 homers.
- sleeknerve, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1yah
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Just how inaccurate is "*****" to you? Because there is NO WAY Derrek Lee is reaching 600 HRs. Not too many people hit 355 home runs after their 32nd birthday.
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+0I hope that is sarcasm because Lee is about the same age as AROD and has less then 250 homers.
- jpezzznuts, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4The list shifts to players who WONT be making the 600 club starting at Adam Dunn on. So really this article took almost no real risks other than assuming Justin Upton makes prosperous long ball seasons and stays healthy his entire career, it even said Prince *might* make the club - ballsy.
- midejitsu, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2The comment about Dunn really made me angry. “Give me 1 season of a .270 average or better and then come knocking on my door…bittch.” It’s painfully obvious that the author knows NOTHING about baseball. Dunn comes off four straight seasons of 40 or more homeruns. And during that time his LOWEST on base percentage was .365. Average doesn’t matter for a player like Dunn. Unfortunately he’s precisely the kind of player Dusty Baker can’t stand, but that doesn’t mean he’s not awesome.
- krische, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2Alright, Prince Fielder and honorable mention Ryan Braun. Go Brewers!
- dballi, on 04/30/2008, -1/+0Ryan Braun? Let's see him play like he did last year for a couple more years then we can start talking about him. What about Derek Lee?
- dan222555, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4ARod is likely to hit 800, forget about 600...
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2LOTS of ifs in that prediction.
- dan222555, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Not really. Besides the obvious if of career ending injury or other extreme circumstances it's certainly likely. All he'd have to do is play for 10 more years and average just under 30 homeruns a year and he'd have 800. I'd call that likely.
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1That is a lot of ifs. Playing for 10 years is an if. The uncertainty of the effect of a new Yankee Stadium on home run hitters is an if. that fact that the Yankee lineup protecting him is QUICKLY deteriorating is another if. And I haven't even gotten into the injuriy aspect. LOT of player have virtually injury-free 20s only to find themselves making annual trips to the DL in their 30s. (which, coincidentally, ARod was just put on today.)
Not to mention, playing third base takes a lot more out of a player's body than the outfield. it is FAR less likely for a third baseman (or short stop) to average 30 HRs in their 30s than an outfielder.- dan222555, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1"Playing for 10 years is an if."
Arod playing for ten more years is not a big if, it's more likely than not.
"The uncertainty of the effect of a new Yankee Stadium on home run hitters is an if."
That's the stupidest of the bunch. The new playing field is the exact same dimensions as it is now. Not to mention the fact that any effect a different stadium would have on a prolific homerun hitter like Arod would be minimal. He's shown he can hit homeruns anywhere.
"that fact that the Yankee lineup protecting him is QUICKLY deteriorating is another if."
The Yankee lineup is one of the best in baseball. There are few places he could go to get better protection. You're only looking at the short term. You seem to think you can judge the future of baseball for the next ten years based on 30 games in April. As long as Arod is on the Yankees he will always have one of the best lineups in baseball around him.
The only legitimate if you have is injury. But even that is not a big enough if to make the possibility of 800 humeruns unlikely. - bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Well...like all Yankee fans, I realize that you are ***** clueless. Also, if ARod had left for another team, you would be agreeing with me. So, like all Yankee fans, I don't take anything you say on baseball to mean a ***** thing.
But let's talk about some of hte idiotic things you said...So...the dimensions of a field are the OnLY aspecte of how it will be for home runs ? Are you ACTUALLY that stupid? Wind direction, etc. all play a MUCH bigger role. Again..that is all I need to do to show everyone that you are a 12 year old kid with ZERO logic skills. The part about the Yankee lineup being the best in baseball is one of those "Yankee fan" statements that makes everyone else laugh at you.
Remember...people laugh at you. You are NOT knowledge about baseball. Get over yourself. You are a ***** 12 year old kid who jerks off to the Yankees. That does not mean that anything you say is intelligent.
But yes...you know more than ALL the experts that say that ARod has a shot at 800, but certainly not a likely one.
(I also notice you didn't talk about how NO infileder has hit 300 HRs after age 32, which ARod would have to do.) - bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Oh...and just so you know...to break reality to you...ARod didn't come back to your precious team because he felt bad about how things went down in October, and because he loves NY. He came back to NY becuase he tested the free agent market and ZERO teams were interested in giving him the salary he wanted. If they had, he would have left in a heartbeat.
Which means, give him 3-4 more years before he starts bitching and demanding a trade. Or a contract renegotiation. Maybe he'll threaten the Yankees brass that he will continue to play as horrible in the post seasons as he has his entire Yankee career if they don't trade him. - proudblackwoman, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1http://digg.com/odd_stuff/Bingobongony_Trolls_all_ ...
- dan222555, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1Considering you've dropped the maturity level to a new low (not surprising given that link posted above) I have no reason to consider conversing with your kind.
- dan222555, on 04/30/2008, -1/+1"Playing for 10 years is an if."
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1By the way...you are also saying it is LIKELY that he is going to play TWENTY FIVE SEASOSN in the majors!
That kind of ridiculous talk would get you laughed out of even a Yankee convention!
- NightOwl4, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8if griffey didnt get hurt a bunch of those times we could be celebrating number 700
- 9bpm9, on 04/30/2008, -0/+3And I stopped reading when he said Sosa and Bonds cheated to get there. I'm a Cardinals fan, and if you're going to be a prick by opening up the article like that, you sure as hell better mention Mark "I'm not here to talk about the past" McGwire.
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1He didn't break 600 homers, note how he didn't talk about Palmeiro either.
- amawg9, on 04/30/2008, -2/+2This list should really only include two players Pujols and A-Rod.
- pedo, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1kinda early to put 20 year old Upton on the list isn't it? and what about vlad and manny?
- Emilio8605, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1The point is that Upton already shows the same promise that Griffey and A-Rod showed at his age. If he stays on the same path as they did, he should definitely reach it.
- pedo, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1anyone that has been following baseball long enough knows that every year theres some kid thats supposedly are the next griffey or a-rod.
- Emilio8605, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1The point is that Upton already shows the same promise that Griffey and A-Rod showed at his age. If he stays on the same path as they did, he should definitely reach it.
- homah, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4This "article" (in quotes because the "author" apparently can't be bothered to learn the difference between then and than) is *****.
- sleeknerve, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1AROD and pujols will probably do it, besides that, there is not that much guarantee, and i love the adum dunn caption, i hate that guy, its cuz he plays in a little league park
- bingobongony, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2This is just a dumb list to even attempt to make. 600 HRs requires a lot more than skill. It requires longevity, health, and luck of what teams you end up on/stadiums you play most your games. It is impossible to predict that. Not to mention it ignores the possibility of a "dead ball era" that could make 50HR years a thing of hte past for a decade.
Why not just make the list "7 great power hitters" - ImYourRealDad, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2How about Manny Ramirez? He's only 104 from 600, and he could accomplish that in 3 or 4 seasons.
- cashwarsplaya, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Last year was a dud for him, I thought for sure he'd hit 500. If he ends this season with anything close to 40, then he's almost a sure thing for 600.
- sislam02, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Albert Pujols and A-Rod have the most chance....they average a good number of hr every season.... to me, Ken Griffey Jr. is a legend, its amazing he could reach 600 without cheating.....smh at bonds
