The Ultimate Act of Sportsmanship
sports.espn.go.com — Western Oregon senior Sara Tucholsky had never hit a home run in her career. She hit a home run to take the lead vs. Central Washington, then tore her ACL rounding the bases. If a player on her team touched her the play would result in an out. Then her opponent said 'Excuse me, would it be OK if we carried her around and she touched each bag?'

I had no idea if I would be able to find it again after so many years, but obviously it had an impact on others as well.

Paulo Di Canio had a clear chance of goal, but noticed that the opposition's goalkeeper was writhing around in agony. He did what a true sportsman should do.

- ashwinashwin, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3this illustrates the difference between men and women... sorry, but we all know no men would do this.
- dougmc, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Sorry, but I don't know that.
Besides, now that the game is over, what's better -- winning the game because you were a stickler for the rules, or losing the game because you did what was clearly the right thing to do? And having the whole country know you did the right thing?
(Though it's hard to tell if this cost them the game or not, the article is a bit unclear on that.) - Grym11, on 05/01/2008, -0/+2When I played soccer in high school it was an informal rule to stop play when another player was clearly injured. I remember times when our team was close to shooting but deliberately kicked it out to stop the game when one of the other team's players was injured.
It didn't happen all the time, mind you. (I remember one time when our goalie was passed out unconscious and I ended up having to block the shot. =P) But it happens.
- dougmc, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Sorry, but I don't know that.

- romistrub, on 04/30/2008, -2/+5Take the most recent UFC fight between Matt Serra and George St. Pierre... *that* was some great sportsmanship at the end.
- mxmj, on 04/30/2008, -0/+21Can you enlighten those of us that don't regularly watch UFC?
- ImportedPotato, on 04/30/2008, -0/+10Id assume hes refering to how the Montreal crowd had been booing Matt Serra before and after the fight, additionally thered been alot of tv hype about a rivalry between George St. Pierre (A montreal resident) and Matt Serra. At the end of the fight when George St. Pierre won he tried to explain to the crowd that the so called rivalry was just UFC's idea to create hype and that they shouldent boo him hes a good guy and he wanted to go for a beer with him after, and they finally stopped.
Unless hes refering to something that happened afterwards that i dont know about- andburn1, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Video link plz? And I swear on my mother's life, if someone RickRolls me, I will... well, I'll digg them down. But I'll be quite cross.

It would be awesome to get an actual answer instead of a "you are stupid", or a "STFU BITCH"*.
Think of it this way, it will give YOU a chance to show how smart you are!
*I was on a debating team in high school and I once won an argument by simply telling my opponent to "***** off". I got an award and everything.- andburn1, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3Because, it was a well written article that built and developed the story well, and the emotional impact of the story is much, MUCH greater if you read the whole thing. And this is the kind of thing that deserves a few minutes out of your day.
- Stupidumb, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4My opinion was that it contained a lot of unnecessary detail and you pretty much get the point from the summary. It seemed long-winded and, to me, they were just repeating the fact that she got injured and the opponents carried her, over and over. This was my opinion as a digg user and someone who had read the article. The article which I speak of is the one on ESPN about the girl who got carried from base to base. I thought I should give my opinion because this is the comment section on digg. My username on digg is Stupidumb, and my opinion was that the article was too long and just needed to get to the point quickly and concisely, like the summary did. I think that the idea of what happened (which was clearly and fully expressed in the summary) was enough to evoke the emotional response you spoke of. Mentioning player's names, stats, and the fact that it happened on Senior Day does not increase the emotional impact, at least not in my opinion (and be "my", I mean me, Stupidumb, a user on digg.) Today is Wednesday.

- Monkeydew06, on 04/30/2008, -2/+4Your high school "achievement" holds no ground here. And how does giving an example of using blunt speak to suceed in a debate help your arguement that you wish to have an "actual answer"?
- Stupidumb, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1Are you for real?
- Monkeydew06, on 04/30/2008, -2/+2Yes =)
- Stupidumb, on 04/30/2008, -4/+2HAHHAHAHAA, I got dugg down. WOW! Just... I no believe. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Is anyone here at LEAST a gr. 2 graduate? Anyone?
Well, Monkeydew06 (if that is his real name) was very convincing when he put "achievement" in "quotations" to "imply" that it was not actually an achievement at all! He also mentions that it holds no ground here. I guess I should not have wrote that then!*
Just help me out on one thing though, you said "And how does giving an example of using blunt speak to suceed in a debate help your arguement that you wish to have an 'actual answer'?". This is where I get confused. When I asked for an actual answer, I had no idea that it constituted "an argument". Here I am thinking that it was simply an "expression of interest" along the lines of "I wish I had ice cream"; I'm not demanding it, but if someone gave me ice cream, I wouldn't complain. But monkey proved me wrong, it was, IN FACT, an argument. Please explain to me as I am too stupid too understand why that is an "argument".
So, for example, if I said "I would like a meatball sub", someone would rationally reply with "I disagree with your stance on the basis of your name." Is that right?
*One time in University, I rode a dinosaur. I got awards and everything!- Monkeydew06, on 05/01/2008, -1/+1Lets set the record straight: I never said it was right to say you are wrong based on your screen name. In fact if you scroll up you can see that I even defended you: "Granted his statement is kinda of lazy, but why say the same thing 7 times digg?" I was merely confused that you would make the statement: "it would be awesome to get an actual answer instead of a "you are stupid", or a "STFU BITCH"*." And then you go on to say: "*I was on a debating team in high school and I once won an argument by simply telling my opponent to "***** off". I got an award and everything." To ask for a reasonable response and then say that you once "won an arguement by simply telling my opponent to "***** off"", makes you a hypocrite. And no, I don't believe being on a debate team and telling your opponent to "***** off" is an achievement.

- Zera, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1There is literally a continuous stream of stories like this. ESPN runs a weekly show called "Outside the Lines" and while some of it's content is about controversy and rule breaking, roughly half is inspirational stories like this. The "Bad" stuff in the news media is all they can find. That's the worst crap happening in the world total. It's the mole on the cheek of humanity, that's it, the remaining 99.9% is good news and that is somehow declared boring by crappy news media.

- hokie47, on 04/30/2008, -2/+3No ***** it is required by the rules and I like the rule. But really what point does it serve when you are already at home plate to be forced to run around the bases with no chance of not making besides some fluke injury.
- yeti22, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2Think of it this way: if the hit had been anything but a home run, the "fluke injury" would have been material to the play. It's not fair to the other team to remove that variable from the play, however remote the possibility.

- bgrah449, on 04/30/2008, -57/+7She helped her opponents score and lost the game for her team. This isn't a baseball game; it's an Oprah show. I'm not mocking her for helping the girl with the torn knee, but this is a bunch of girls having a cry - not sportsmanship. Sportsmanship would have been for the girl with the torn knee to own up to the fact that a substitute was the best situation, and accept it gracefully.
- jdotter, on 04/30/2008, -1/+9See - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sportsmanship
Of the Five facets of sportsmanship identified in this entry see #4 - Respect and concern for the opponent (e.g., lending one’s equipment to the opponent, agreeing to play even if the opponent is late, not taking advantage of injured opponents)- bgrah449, on 04/30/2008, -7/+1And then just below it, #5 - When an opponent can't score on their own, help them out and score for them.
- yeti22, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6The girl with the torn knee didn't do anything to bring about this outcome. It's not like she was pleading with the ump for a chance to run the bases. The other team acted spontaneously and of their own volition, in accordance with the rules of the game. How is that not baseball?

- zacharytelschow, on 04/30/2008, -2/+5ACL injuries are VERY common in women since they are built differently than men. Also, the article said she ran past the base and changed directly to go back to it. I've seen people tear ligaments nearly standing still.

This is a fantastic show of sportsmanship, empathy, and understanding. All athletes would do well to read this story & live by it.
- pintomp3, on 04/30/2008, -16/+6forgive my ignorance, but doesn't tearing an ACL require quite a bit of force? if she just hit a home run, would she need to run so hard? i don't know baseball/softball or sports medicine. perhaps someone has an answer. great show if sportsmanship regardless.
- pointsguy, on 04/30/2008, -10/+0Not if the ligament is weak such as the geriatric and people who shouldn't play sports.
- SuperFarStucker, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/sports/baseball/ ...
NYT sheds a bit of light on this, she was 'running hard' and tripped over first base after she realized she'd hit a homerun.
wikipedia is also enlightening, stating 70% of ACL injuries come from non-contact sports and that they're estimated to be 8 times more frequent in women, which they primarily attribute to anatomical and hormonal differences. They back this with a 65 woman study which claims peak incidence of ACL injuries occurs at "mid-cycle ovulation."
I thought the same thing though.
- SuperFarStucker, on 04/30/2008, -0/+9http://www.nytimes.com/2008/04/30/sports/baseball/ ...
- bovilexia, on 04/30/2008, -0/+15ACL tears usually occur when a person pivots too quickly. which is what happened in this case, when she pivoted to go back and touch first.
- hoopy22, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2Also, female athletes sustain many more ACL injuries than males. Has to do with their physiology, this ligament is not as strong proportionally in girls. When I was in high school, one of the girls on the basketball team tore hers just lazily running down the court.
- lollerwaffles, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6Milton Bradley tore his ACL while aruging with an ump, and he's a professional player:
http://sports.aol.com/fanhouse/2007/09/24/milton-b ...
The first base coach was trying to pull him away from the argument and Bradley fell awkwardly. It can happen to anyone if you twist it the right way. - dddavid, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2RTA, she was excited, she was running faster than she needed to (also the reason she missed tagging first)
- Smuikas, on 04/30/2008, -1/+4She probably initially didn't realize she hit a homer. When you get a hit, you just run at first base as hard as you can. You don't watch where the ball goes cause that slows you down. She probably realized partway to first when the crowd roared what she had done, which got her even more excited... Getting a hit in baseball is a pretty effing exciting thing.
- ultar6, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0Why does it matter what it takes to tear an ACL? I once banged my knee pretty hard, was in debilitating pain and unable to put ANY weight on it for 4 days. Day 5 was a different story.
Even minor knee injuries can be brutal.

- uu2b, on 04/30/2008, -1/+5Your obvious need for attention aside...why would you take the time to post a comment on a story you consider boring? Do you post on every story you consider boring?
Since you've only posted 80 comments since 2006 makes me think that your mommy doesn't give you the attention your sad little life requires, so you make a complete ass of yourself on Digg to compensate. Well done. I hope you're sterile...- gl77, on 04/30/2008, -2/+1why would you comment on someone else's comment that you feel that way about? why not just bury and get it over with?
- uu2b, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2why would you comment on someone else's comment, whose comment that you feel that way about? why not just bury and get it over with?
This could really go on forever...thanks anyway. - ace429k, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2im confused. whose on first?!

- Puffles, on 04/30/2008, -1/+12If a player on your own team touches you after you hit a home run, you're automatically out? I didn't know that.
- bovilexia, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6i don't know NCAA softball rules but my guess is it has anything to do with it being home run, just in general when rounding the bases if you touch a teammate it's an automatic out.
- glxyjones, on 04/30/2008, -3/+1I found it odd to cause I've definitely seen players slap the hands of the first/third base coach while rounding the bases after a big homerun. And from what the article says, it sounds like the first base coach wasn't even allowed to touch her.
- Lonelobo01, on 04/30/2008, -6/+0It's not a rule. I just read the MLB rules again to be sure.
- EvilJelloMan, on 04/30/2008, -0/+12And the MLB rules have what, exactly, to do with this NCAA Division II college game?
- Smuikas, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8MLB != college softball
- darlingt, on 04/30/2008, -0/+7The rule is that if you aid a teammate in advancing, it is interference and they are out. It's not just touching, it's helping them advance. The first base coach was just being overly cautious.
- cthulhukb, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3I don't think he was being overly cautious. It seems to me that carrying an injured player would definitely be considered helping her advance.
- geoff1210, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1I umpire little league baseball, and yes, just touching (like when telling them to run to the next base) a runner as a base coach is enough for the kid to be called out. So I think carrying an injured player counts as that.
- darlingt, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yes, but just *touching* (as in a high-five) is not enough to get called out. That's the point I was trying to make.
- travisd666, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6The rules in NCAA must be different than MLB, when Gabe Kapler fell rounding the bases when he played for the Red Sox against the Blue Jays in '05, they let the Sox substitute a pinch-runner and he just rounded the bases for a home run.
- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2I think since it was her only home run she wanted to do it.
- PigGeneral, on 04/30/2008, -2/+2Article states " Rules of the game, Teamate touches you = Out" Opposing team carried her so her record would show she scored a home run.
- jserio, on 04/30/2008, -1/+2I didn't know this either, but it's in the rules (12.4.15):
-----
12.4.15 When, after hitting a home run, providing her team previously was
warned for a first offense, the individual is touched by any member of the
offensive team other than the base coaches, before touching home plate.
EFFECT—The ball is dead. The batter is out and credited with the last base
legally touched at the time of the interference. Each other
runner must return to the last base legally touched at the
time of the interference.
-----
Notice that it says "provided her team was previously warned for a first offense." Since the score was 0-0 at the time, there would have been no first offense so they probably could have carried her.

- logan074, on 04/30/2008, -3/+2I think since it was her only home run she wanted to do it.
- carneymi, on 04/30/2008, -0/+6In our world of "beat the crap out of the opponent" , "kick them while they are down" and goons being sent out to "send a message", it is refreshing to hear stories such as these that some (many?) athletes still play the game for the love of the game, for fun and that winning is just a bonus.
- hoopy22, on 04/30/2008, -2/+42Geez, I'm a big ol' burly dude, and this made tears run down my cheeks. Well done young lady, and well written Mr. Hays.
- DrMatt, on 04/30/2008, -1/+6Brilliant! I'm giving this to all my clients!

- Makr, on 04/30/2008, -25/+2Why is this on Digg? I mean it's a great story and all, but once upon a time Digg was a technology-type website.
- bigpeeler, on 04/30/2008, -0/+16Yeah, and I used to have a full head of hair. Things change, bro.
- 06metzp, on 04/30/2008, -0/+11Yes, and then a "sports" section was added, among others. Technology-type stories remained in their Technology-type categories, and all lived in harmony happily ever after.
- schroderr224, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Yay you complained today! Grats on a full day's work.
- yeti22, on 04/30/2008, -0/+2... and Slashdot still is. Pretty sure you can figure out the rest for yourself.
- dddavid, on 04/30/2008, -13/+1That was great. But couldn't she have crawled? I know it's a long way to crawl, but given it being her first home run, if it had been me, I would have crawled before allowing someone to mark it down as a two run single. Although if someone had offered to carry me, that would have been a better option.
- mlvassallo, on 04/30/2008, -0/+8Somebody has never had a knee injury before.
- charlie55, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1nah, dddavid is right. there is no reason you shouldnt be able to manage the pain and make it around the bases on your own. tearing an acl is not too terrible. the surgery to fix it is much worse than the actual injury.
- Miamisun, on 04/30/2008, -0/+1Have fun crawling 270 feet the next time you tear your ACL.
- charlie55, on 05/01/2008, -0/+1i walked off the field when i tore my acl and considered going back in the game, but i was too slowed by it to keep up. if you are not a wuss you can walk after tearing it. later your knee swells and makes walking difficult, but not impossible. and anyway, at no point should you be unable to hop on one leg. i hopped into the docs office to get crutches and an MRI. it should have been relatively easy to walk or hop the bases.
- ultar6, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0You and dddavid are clueless. I've seen NFL players tear their ACL, writhe on the ground in agony, and be carried off the field. You can do all sorts of things to your knee - and all of them can easily bring excruciating pain, or very little pain. Doesn't matter if you're crawling, hopping, or trying to walk.

- Nyck, on 04/30/2008, -0/+4Great story...its nice to hear about things like this for once rather than the next superstars legal troubles. much respect to those to girls
- barney74, on 04/30/2008, -3/+13Just wish I could digg this story more than once.
- matschig, on 04/30/2008, -4/+1You can.

- ghank, on 04/30/2008, -3/+6This is a concept that Sean Avery will never figure out.
- iidestined, on 04/30/2008, -4/+14I never cry but this story is pushing me to my limit. Sadly, I doubt that I would have been as thoughful as those players in that situation. This story is truly inspiring. This will have a bigger impact on their lives than a win would ever have.
- HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -15/+4A man would have crawled around the bases while his opponents let him out of mercy, that'd be honorable
- oscenester, on 04/30/2008, -1/+3aahahahahahahahahahahaha
all the while, mercilessly tearing at his 16oz steak he had stashed in his pocket he was keeping as a midgame snack- ultar6, on 05/01/2008, -0/+0Don't forget, he also taunts the first baseman as he reaches back for first, ridicules the second baseman for needing the shortstop to compensate for his lack of manhood, calls the shortstop a rest stop and pisses on him, then tells the third baseman that it's okay - he's not in right field so he's not the worst player on the team.
Then, he stops just short of home plate, slaps said steak on it, pulls out a fork, knife and bottle of A1, gingerly eats the steak without bodily touching home plate, then scores the winning run as his first bodily part to touch the plate is his tongue, which is licking the last bit of A1 from the promised land.

I kid I kid!- charlie55, on 04/30/2008, -4/+1i dont kid. learn how to run, bitches. injuries are part of the game. and you have to touch the bases or you are out. helping her means you dont understand sports. run the bases or no HR.
