- serif69, on 03/31/2009, -0/+10Schadenfreude. I'm a Yankee fan, and I hated him even when he was on the Yankees and being productive. He's just a egotistical douche. I don't tend to wish ill on people, but I am certainly getting some unexpected delight knowing that he might be stopped at 499.
- frontaxle, on 03/31/2009, -0/+8Jusssssssst a bit outside.
- chicagojack, on 03/31/2009, -0/+7biggest douche in sports
- milk93rd, on 04/01/2009, -0/+6One of those times I wish I could multiple-digg a story. I've hated this douche since he started throwing balls into the stands in Milwaukee because he didn't want to play there.
- username7410, on 03/31/2009, -0/+6Who cares, he was doping... pretty lame only getting to 499 when you're juiced.
- sekseebeast, on 03/31/2009, -1/+5Correction: he is one away from 500*
- stellarceltic, on 03/31/2009, -0/+4If we're talking about current athletes, then yes. But Bonds has him beat by far.
- Noliaboy75, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4F-him. I hope he dies with 499. Cheating *****.
- dannykeene, on 04/01/2009, -1/+5maybe if he were 1% less of a dick, they might have kept him on. But I'm sure he will say how his release was racist somehow
- loggedout, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4Couldn't have happened to a bigger prick.
- TheNyquilKid, on 04/01/2009, -0/+4I'm a Tigers fan, and hated him even when he was on the Yankees.
***** him, - stellarceltic, on 04/01/2009, -2/+5Then why waste your time commenting? You think we care?
- notman, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3I'm kind of surprised by this, mainly because I figured the Tigers would want to sell tickets (which people would buy to see #500). Oh well... I hope they find some more hitters. First pudge, now chef....
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+3Not that he's going to be elected to the HOF after he retires, but you'd be surprised how much "plateaus" like 500 HRs mean to HOF voters. 500 HRs used to be a very significant accomplishment and maybe 30-40 years ago assured you a spot in the HOF.
In the live ball era, 500 HRs isn't as impressive, but you wouldn't realize from the tons of idiot sportswriters who use that kind of rationale when they cast their ballots. - 0xbaadf00d, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2As a Tigers fan I am not sad, although it sucks that Illich is out 14 million. He batted .225 last year and .178 in spring training. Marcus Thames is a much better hitter.
- melies, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Kenny powers should talk to him
- endustry, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2I bet Fausto Carmona would love another opportunity to kick Sheffield's ass in front of 20,000+ people but otherwise, yeah, no one wants this ***** around anymore.
- RunDiggMC, on 03/31/2009, -3/+5As a Giants fan, I'd love for San Francisco to sign Sheffield. After 15 years with Barry Bonds, San Francisco fans have developed a tolerance for doped-up hotheads.
- TheNyquilKid, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2As long as the Tigers don't end up signing Bonds. There was talk of it last year, Leyland apparently likes him.
- randomguy2525, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Yes, thats exactly how its going to go down. You nailed it.
- sfcaptainrob, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2No, this is a move to free up a roster spot for Marcus Thames.
- notman, on 04/01/2009, -0/+2Oh, I agree (I was at one two years back), but I think things will be different this year because of our local economy :/ (and last year's poor performance)
- etx313, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Doesn't mean much coming from Curling fan!!
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1EXACTLY.
- WillDearborn, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Contracts are guaranteed in baseball
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1so what? he'd have 150 less if it weren't for steroids.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -1/+2I'm Kenny f**kin Powers!!! hahah
- TheNyquilKid, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1I don't, tickets can still be had for next to nothing, The afternoon games attract a lot of younger people who are on break just looking for something to do on a nice day.
- TigerStar337, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1It is crazy. Detroit still has to pay his salary of 14 million$$$$. WTF?
- TheNyquilKid, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Tigers haven't had problems selling tickets the past few years. There have been boring weekday afternoon games that are standing room only.
- Tetrator, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1Dugg for schadenfreude.
- SnapETom, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1How long is it going to be before he starts screaming that he was released because he's black?
- MelvinSchlubman, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1If all that's needed to interest you is simple motion then no surprise. If strategy and tactics are not beyond your reach then baseball is a fascinating sport.
- inactive, on 04/01/2009, -0/+1He must have been doing pretty badly in spring training for the Tigers cut him and still have to eat his contract.
- mkrob, on 04/01/2009, -0/+0http://www.mkrob.com/of-gary-sheffield-released-fr ...
- DirtyBinLV, on 04/01/2009, -4/+2Oooohhh,,,,a number that ends in two zeroes. If he ends his career with 499 home runs, he sucks. But if he hits 500, now that's a real accomplishment.
- inactive, on 03/31/2009, -9/+1Baseball is almost exciting as cricket.
