- 2468ben, on 04/29/2008, -3/+12Man, I could make a nice bed out of $126 million too.
- SirChaos, on 04/29/2008, -6/+14Umm....what kind of pic is that? A dude sleeping?
- broysox, on 04/29/2008, -3/+10Maybe a 15-year old will be in the bed. Oh wait, that's Roger Clemens.
- terracottapai, on 04/29/2008, -1/+5Since Steve Ballmer and Rupert Murdoch became lovers.
/hasnoidea - ngmcs8203, on 04/29/2008, -2/+6As an A's fan I laughed a little inside when Brian S. and the Giants decided to pay that much for a career .500 pitcher.
- innocentsinner, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3That is the bed that he's made and he has to lay in it.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3LOL. Hey, Randy is a YOUNG 44!
- barfooz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3As a Diamondbacks fan, I heartily agree with you.
- WhatsUpWithJack, on 04/29/2008, -2/+5Dugg for the article picture correlating with Zito's quote extraordinarily well.
- Zihuatanejo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3Last I checked, I wasn't paying Barry Zito anything.
- tomatoflight, on 04/29/2008, -0/+3as a mariners fan, i laugh at A's fans with lackluster baseball knowledge. zito is well over 110 w's with about 80 L's. exactly how is that .500? whatever the case, glad the M's didn't sign this guy, well over the hill with the 80 mph fastball and 76 mph change.
- ladn3k, on 04/29/2008, -3/+5GOD DAMMNNNIIIITTTTTT!!!!!!!!!
- c0baltfish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2He always plays bad in April, just not this bad.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Wow that's an expensive bullpen pitcher. Thanks!
- VidDigger, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2It is pretty accurate. I'd have no problem sleeping in a bed with 126 million dollars
- Zihuatanejo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Because baseball's union is one of the most powerful in the world.
- bunk, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2anyone worth their salt knew that contract was *****. it's all on the giants. boras probably had them bidding against themselves.
no way there should ever be a 7 year contract for a pitcher. - jaydoj, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2128 million dollar bed...let's assume he sleeps eight hours $160,000 for an eight hour period, roughly 470 dollars an hour, while he sleeps! Baseball players are OVERPAID, this is ridiculous.
- c0baltfish, on 04/29/2008, -0/+2Uh....no.
- darthschriver, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Hey, its not all bad Tim Lincecum is a future Cy Young winner...maybe not even that far in the future with the year he is having, and Matt Cain is really solid pitcher as well. As a Pirates fan..I have no sympathy, until you close in on the record for consecutive losing seasons you don't have real problems.
- drpleau, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2YEAH...i cried a little when they signed this, and then sent them hate mail. The guy is going to be like 36 when his contract ends. Probably the Giant's worse signing in a long time (counting Benitez and joe table)
- TonyLocNE, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Too bad for Zito... I've always liked him after I read a SI article about him.. He talked in the interview about how he used to be a geek, never got with any of the girls, and used to trip LSD all back in high school. I thought it was cool how he got past all of that and won a Cy Young.
- wigginz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1The cesspool of disappointing professional sports in the Bay Area suddenly gets much, much deeper.
- scheibs14, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2A situation like Zito's makes me wonder why there aren't a lot more strictly performance based contracts
- ngmcs8203, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Contract = No surfing
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3baseball fan please help basketball/football fan: what does being sent to the bullpen mean in baseball exactly? He's shelved, or a reliever??
- barfooz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1It is a great ballpark, I've been there myself. You can get a ticket for $20 in the upper deck if you're actually interested in going to see games there.
- meromasta, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Zito sucks and he was overrated. Thank god the yanks didn't go after him. It's a shame that you can make $126 mil playing out of the bullpen.
- barfooz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1As the big California teams keep throwing money down the toilet, the 23rd largest payroll in MLB continues to roll over the competition... http://sportsline.com/mlb/salaries
- mmachado22, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Totally agree dude.
- barfooz, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1The bullpen is the name for the group of pitchers who come into the game after the starting pitcher is removed. Some of them are there because they don't have the endurance to be starters, some are young pitchers fresh from the minor leagues, some are career relievers who have really good stuff and are good for situational roles, and a few of them are washouts like Barry Zito. When you are a starter, being sent to the bullpen is basically a demotion, because usually you're promoted from the bullpen to the starting rotation.
- darthschriver, on 04/29/2008, -2/+3Unless he can get that fastball back no one will fear him again..he just hangs up those pitches and waits to get clocked. He will be gone from baseball in a few years, but until then he will make the giants look stupid for paying him that kind of money.
- Zihuatanejo, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Was that an obscure board games reference?
- anachronaut, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Well, according to the following link it's been 4 years since they announced the partnership, so it's not exactly breaking news:
http://www.news.com/MSN-and-FoxSports-strike-porta ... - inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1If you want to call 5 years of mediocrity a "slump", go ahead. I laugh at how much money Zito has made off of one good year, 6 years ago.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Damn it sucks being a giants fan these days :(
- momsshizzle, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Good. Too much money for players who scratch their balls on the mount.
- BAFrayd, on 05/06/2008, -0/+1OUCH!
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1And I laugh at a Mariners fan with such ***** REAL knowledge. 27 of 31 wins difference that take him over .500 for his career, came 6 and 7 years ago. Since then? 2 games UNDER .500.
So, in the last FIVE years, he has been at best, a mediocre pitcher. He would fit right in with the Mariners! - ComradeGoby, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Mark Macguire should get an asterk too, I assume?
- c0baltfish, on 04/29/2008, -1/+2Read the description..."This is the bed that I've made and I have to lay in it." said Zito
- brjndr, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Laughing loudly from Oakland for the next six years
- partysan, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Absolutely
- MorfiusX, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1As a Reds fan, I hope he got us out of our slump... :)
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Wouldn't you be sleeping well if you had a $126 million contract and your employer was trying to find ways for you to do even less work for the money?
- ReFleXxXxXxXxX, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Zito somehow needs to get his velocity back, if he doesn't i dont see him coming back to the starting rotation.
- kemp34, on 04/29/2008, -0/+1Oh man, that's just sad.
- InvsibleChimp, on 05/02/2008, -0/+0Who you gonna trade him to? No one wants a mediocre to bad pitcher with that contract. SF is stuck with him.
- inactive, on 04/29/2008, -0/+0Yet again Zito disappoints the SF fans. I say trade him.
