- thespiff, on 06/30/2008, -12/+83"This could only happen in baseball, the best game."
Only in baseball could I read 10-15 paragraph article and still have no ***** clue how the team won without a hit.
Oh, and Tim Kurkjian is an idiot. - terminal157, on 06/30/2008, -1/+65It might make a little more sense if his description of what happened were clearer.
- eeeo, on 06/30/2008, -11/+65Reading this article was as boring as watching a baseball game.
- bicyclethief, on 06/30/2008, -4/+52Baseball: the sport that makes public adjustments of your junk acceptable.
- RMSzero, on 06/30/2008, -7/+48This is a ***** article. First of all, in EVERY sport can you see something amazing every time you go to watch it. Secondly, baseball statistics are ***** stupid, but everyone looks around shocked when they turn out to be *****.
You can win without a hit because a hit is only one of three ways to get on base, and there are even more ways to advance runners. Yes there were no hits, but the Dodgers had (IIRC) three walks and the angels had two errors. The run was scored by a sacrifice fly, where the ball is hit to the outfield and caught for an out, but the runner was able to tag up and advance home. - kiiwii, on 06/30/2008, -0/+30The Dodgers got on base because of an error, which isn't ruled a hit for the Dodgers but an E for the Angels.
The runner stole second. Got to third on a passed ball by the catcher (meaning the catcher didn't play the ball correctly on a pitch and it went in back of him)
The man on third came home on a sacrifice fly, meaning there were less than two outs and the batter hit it far enough that once the outfielder caught the ball, the man on third could easily run in for the score. Again, no hit. - encrypteduser, on 06/30/2008, -18/+42Imagine how boring this game was.
- rybrown, on 06/30/2008, -1/+25How they scored with no hits:
1. Matt Kemp came up to bat and hit a spinning infield hit that the pitcher tried to scoop up with his glove but he could not pick it up. It was at first ruled a hit but then changed to an error on the pitcher.
2. Matt Kemp attempted to steal second and the catcher threw the ball into center field which advanced Kemp to Third on the throwing error.
3. A sacrifice fly was hit to score Kemp. All without a registered hit (two errors) - gerrylazlo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+21Wow, it's crystal clear now. Thanks.
- nuclearpenguins, on 06/30/2008, -10/+25Why all the baseball hate? If you don't give a rat's ass about baseball then why did you people click the link and or comment here?
- bills534, on 06/30/2008, -1/+16I came looking through the comments just for this. What an arrogant and completely unfounded statement. The guy who wrote this article comes off sounding like a real *****.
- JeddHampton, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12An unearned run is when the runner should have been out, but an error allowed him to stay in the game and score.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -4/+15sounds like those who witnessed this rare event also witnessed an incredibly boring game.
- Forge42, on 06/30/2008, -0/+10Geez.. thank you for the plain english version without a terrible sports writer trying to sound witty.
- JTJ1210, on 06/30/2008, -2/+11Games with a possibility of a no hitter are very exciting to watch, because you don't see them that often and it's fun to root the pitcher on, or if you're a fan of the other team, then you root for them to break up the no hitter.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+10Good pitching is as entertaining as good hitting if you're watching for the right reasons. If you just want to see a bunch of home runs endlessly and consider anything else boring, you're missing out on a lot of the game.
- dema, on 06/30/2008, -8/+16>Baseball is the best game in part because every night you go to the ballpark, you might see something you've never seen before. No other sport can say that like baseball can, and Saturday night at Dodger Stadium was just such a night, a night that made no sense.
ANY other sport can say that "like baseball can." What a silly article, buried. - Supermike, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7Thankyou for doing in 3 sentences what that whole article failed to do.
- cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8"Seriously, this is why Baseball is falling behind American Football, Real Football, and even NASCAR"
What? Because your too ignorant or stubborn to know the rules? - Yazilliclick, on 06/30/2008, -6/+12Under the false hope that it might have been something interesting but turned out to be a poorly written article about a boring baseball game.
- JTJ1210, on 06/30/2008, -1/+7Not just because you don't see them often means it's exciting. It is a great accomplishment for a pitcher to throw a no-hitter. Only 256 no-hitters have ever been thrown, not every pitcher gets to say that he threw a no-hitter. Do you not enjoy watching a professional athlete have a great accomplishment? I take it you are not a baseball fan.
- sirlancelot88, on 06/30/2008, -3/+9I bet you don't even play sports. You just feel a need to diss baseball and tout rugby because you think it makes you sound informed about sports. I'm also willing to bet that it makes you feel "manly" in some pathetic, surrogate way.
- bang21, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Unfortunately, for those who don't watch Sportscenter, the article assumes you've already seen the highlights, and understand the rules of baseball.
- myklee, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5what a dumb comment.
- Larsonal777, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6Its because of the error...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Error_(baseball)
basically the guy wouldn't have got on base (a hit) if the pitcher didn't make an error (miss the ball next to him) so he got on base but it wasn't considered a hit.
Tim Kurkjian is writing to baseball fans who know these rules... but even so... that article was ALL over the place. - kidathinnes, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6I really don't understand what you were expecting. From all your other posts it is very apparent you don't like the sport, and know absolutely nothing about it. It sounds like your idea of baseball is two people playing catch while one tries to hit it and others sit/stand around talking. Very far from the true reality of the sport. So here's an idea, don't click on the link.
- Namakemono, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5I was there. It was a great game. You just don't appreciate good pitching I guess.
- kidathinnes, on 06/30/2008, -0/+4 If you ever actually watched a baseball game, you would know that it takes so much athleticism. You sound like a meat head who "is too manly" to play or have interest in a sport that doesn't leave him aching every time you play. You are a moron, next time try actually watching or reading about something before you go off on it.
And people aren't just standing around with there thumbs up there asses between pitches. It is a constant game of strategy. Where to stand to have the best chance of getting the next guy out. Will the bunt, steal, hit and run. What base you will go to if it is hit to you. These are thoughts that are constant in the defense. But again, if you ever actually watched a game you may know this. - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -5/+9It wasn't a no hitter
http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp ... - JeddHampton, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5He mentions this in the article:
"So the Angels did not allow a hit but did not throw a no-hitter." - kidathinnes, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3hahahaha another prime example of another douchebag ranting on something he knows nothing about.
- dolemite01, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4I disagree with the summary, not sure if you've never watched American Football but every commentator has some way of saying tonight is the first night that such and such has ever happened. Granted it most of the time its innocuous information such as 'First time ever a Ivy league graduate has scored a touchdown wearing blue shoes on a monday night on the east coast', but stil...

- bearcat8543, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3***** my bad, 60 ft. and that makes it even harder!
- devophl, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3Even in the northeast, I'd say baseball is still not king. The NFL is pretty much king no matter where you go. With the resurgence of the Patriots, I think the Red Sox could be number 2 in that market.
I've found that very few people under the age of 35 even pay attention to baseball. They think its boring and the rules stupid and unless the local team is doing well, won't even watch a game on TV, even in a sports bar. Even now, I go to sports bars and they're more likely to have the NFL channel or a MMA match on the TVs than a baseball game.
With the creep of the basketball, hockey and football seasons into summer, baseball now only has about a 5 week period (end of June to the end of July) where it is of #1 interest in the sporting world. By this time next month, you'll barely even know baseball exists thanks to the start of the NFL preseason.
I am a baseball fan and grew up in the 70s, the last great era of baseball. Since then the NFL, NBA (even though its support has slipped recently) and NASCAR have all moved ahead of baseball in terms of interest. But baseball is more of a subtle game, cerebral at times which is beyond the ability of those in today's explicit/literal generation to understand. - RMSzero, on 06/30/2008, -4/+7I can enjoy going to the ballpark occasionally, this submission was begging for hate by calling baseball the "best game."
- bearcat8543, on 06/30/2008, -1/+4true. this is because for a legitimate no-hitter, a pitcher must record 27 outs. since the angels were the visiting team, they did not have to pitch the last half of the ninth, which is usually not not normal in a no hitter where you would be winning.
- rnelsonee, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3I learned about what constitutes a hit the hard way. We were playing a game where you throw money into a cup and pass it along with every new hitter. If 'your' guy gets a hit, you take all the money out, otherwise you put more money in and build up the pot.
So I get the cup and the guy gets to first. "Nope" my friends tell me - the guy at 2nd got out - Fielder's Choice - no hit. Arg. Next guy up for my turn, gets to first, no one gets out, so I try to take the money again . Nope - the shortstop bobbled it - that's an Error - no hit. I felt like they were just making up the rules :) - chiefs10, on 06/30/2008, -0/+3while i agree with the latter part of your statement, i would like to know who you have throwing a 90 mph curve ball from halfway between the pitchers mound and second base????
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -2/+5So did I. "no other sport can say it that like baseball can". What rubbish.
- bearcat8543, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2a legitimate no-hitter is recorded when a team makes 27 outs. since they were the losing team and the visitors, they did not pitch in the bottom of the 9th to record the final 3.
- abctuba, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Ah good point, I knew I just wasn't visualizing it correctly.
- 9bpm9, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2No, it means an away pitcher can't throw a no hitter if they're losing because they will only face 24 batters. Just because your team doesn't bat 27 times, the other team does if you're throwing a no-hitter at home.
- kuchta, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2A losing visitor pitcher could get a no-hitter if the game was tied and went into the 10th inning. That's at least how I understand it based on the info that I've read. The home team would have to score without getting any hits in the bottom of an extra inning, but it could happen. Some info here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/recap?gameId=2806281 ...
- bearcat8543, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2it is a bit confusing. remember, if you are the winning team at home, you still pitch in the top of the ninth, you just dont hit in the bottom of the ninth. a home pitcher can record a no-hitter. technically, a losing visitor pitcher can never record a 'true' no-hitter.
- kidathinnes, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2PS That makes me sad
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -10/+12"Baseball is the best game" fail, the game sucks, it's so boring.
- abctuba, on 06/30/2008, -0/+2Maybe I am all screwed up in this, but doesn't that mean you can never throw a no hitter at home? Let's say the situation was reversed, and the dodgers had the no hitter going, wouldn't they still not have had to play the bottom of the ninth?, which would null the no-hitter as the rule now states? I might just be confused here, either way allowing no hits and still losing is odd as it is.
- kidathinnes, on 06/30/2008, -1/+3I'm pretty sure the ignorance that you just displayed there is the real epitome of what is wrong with this world and not a sport.
