- sfcitybootcamp, on 03/29/2008, -7/+1You ever seen Steve Nash dribble the basketball with his feet? puts fat Livan to shame... although the baseball is infinitely smaller.

- sdquinn, on 03/29/2008, -1/+1It should be worth nothing el Duque did a similar play while on the Yankees. Caught the ball in his mitt after it bounced, he couldnt jar it loose so he just threw his glove to first base.
- DephexTwin, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1Okay, so if feet were gloves, and kicking were throwing gloves, this would be very similar.

- sdquinn, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2I'm aware, I know he was never on the Mets -- I'm a Mets fan. There was speculation this offseason, but I'm content with El Duque, Pelfrey, and Maine -- not even to mention Pedro or Santana.

Mirror please. - Anubis2051, on 03/29/2008, -9/+3Paul O'Neill did it first...
- bingobongony, on 03/29/2008, -1/+7But he did it by accident. And didn't get anyone out. He just kicked a perfect relay throw to hold a runner on third. He kicked it after bobbling a single, thinking that he had just lost the game. It was purely out of frustration, yet it was a perfect kick right to the second baseman and the runner on third held up.
- AtiimKiambu, on 03/29/2008, -0/+3I really don't know why you're being dugg down. Paul O'Neill is famous for his kick. Like bingobongobingobongoboingowhatever said, it was a different situation, but I still thought your joke was funny. (And this is coming from a Mets fan who hates the Yankees).

- mckirkus, on 03/29/2008, -13/+6From the Star Tribune since the video is down:
"This time, with no outs in the third inning, Johnson dropped a seemingly perfect bunt down the first-base line.
"I'm thinking, 'I'm getting a hit,'" the speedy Johnson said.
The 6-2, 245-pound Hernandez ambled toward the ball, and got there with Johnson a few strides from first base.
Reaching down and flipping the ball to first seemed the only available option.
"He probably would have ended up on his face if he did," Gardenhire said.
So Hernandez improvised, kicking the ball about 10 feet, knee high, right into Morneau's glove ... for the out. A perfectly legal play.
Tampa Bay first base coach George Hendrick started clapping. A crowd of 7,968 at Hammond Stadium howled.
"Everybody in our dugout was taking their hat off and just bowing to [Hernandez]," Bartlett said. "To kick it and to hit it in the air right at Morneau's glove -- it's impossible, but he did it."
And how about the catch?
"Any other first baseman it probably would have hit off their knee or something," Bartlett said. "But Morneau had that hockey instinct."
Yes, Morneau played goalie through juniors in Canada. But he'd never seen a successful kick quite like this.
"No, because usually that's no goal in hockey," he said.
As Hernandez walked through the clubhouse, Morneau said, "Hey, Pele!"
The big righthander smiled. He shrugged off the play, saying he did the same thing last year for Arizona, with Tony Clark playing first base. A quick Internet search could not confirm the details, but Hernandez did not commit an error in 2007.
"Maybe one day I miss it, and people get mad," Hernandez said. "But I'm 2-for-2."
It's not exactly a play Gardenhire wants emphasized in pitchers fielding practice, but the manager called it an OK move, "as long as we kick it to the first baseman."

Digg is not the source of media and content but a collection of pointers to media and content.- MAJORstrasser, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2I don't know that there'd be any others, considering the size of the stadium, but I for one saw it in person. One hell of a play, especially seeing it from the second row behind home plate. And the roar of the crowd afterwards... my god. It sounded more like 40,000 people instead of 7500.

- MAJORstrasser, on 03/29/2008, -0/+2If I could've whipped out my cell phone fast enough, I would've. Actually, I did after the fact, figuring I could record the instant replay... until I remembered this is a tiny spring training field and there is no instant replay.

- ricree, on 03/29/2008, -0/+1I've done that before when something looked interesting but I didn't have the time to look at it or the site was down. Digg sorely needs a bookmark without digging function.

But Hernandez really stole the show with his third-inning decision to kick a bunt attempt by Tampa Bay’s Elliot Johnson toward first base in a last-ditch attempt to get an out. The ball went directly into Justin Morneau’s glove, taking a hit away from Johnson.
