- Blinker1315, on 07/17/2009, -3/+42Big surprise. He's always been one of the most selfish players in the game. And it doesn't help that his agent is Scott Boras.
- WordsnCollision, on 07/17/2009, -0/+38In related news, Manny Ramirez still has fans.
- soccerman90, on 07/18/2009, -3/+26That's just Manny being Barry
- billjimbob, on 07/17/2009, -1/+20I knew this article was by Bill Plashke before I even clicked on it. Nobody hates Manny as much as that guy.
- ROBINEW, on 07/17/2009, -3/+17Mannywood? WTF?
- pandawa, on 07/18/2009, -2/+14He shows support by waving to the fans every time he rounds 3rd base. ***** off Bill Plashke, we in Dodgertown still love the ***** with the dreads that is Manny Ramirez.
Although i have to say i am depressed when we lose 8-1 to the Astros like tonight. - RiMac, on 07/18/2009, -1/+11Bill Plaschke is such a goober.
- SnapETom, on 07/18/2009, -2/+12Anyone who follows the Dodgers knows that Plashke is a miserable son of a bitch. His articles are often nothing more that speculation and poorly researched ever. However, the LA Times keeps this guy on because he baits people. If this guy was 15 years old now, he'd be an internet troll.
- jboitnott, on 07/17/2009, -5/+15After all those years of giving the Giants a hard time for having a douchebag in the outfield, it's only fitting that Dodger fans get their own version.
- blakyce, on 07/18/2009, -1/+10He is giving the fans what they deserve. They cheer for a selfish player who has always put himself before his teammates or the public. If they want to be treated well then they should support somebody worthy of their adoration.
- madcaps1980, on 07/18/2009, -0/+9Bring Juan Pierre back!!
- Jhiaxuz, on 07/18/2009, -0/+8We have A Rod but we don't have Man Ram? Why not...
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -3/+10He will always be a jackass....
- AJRiddle, on 07/18/2009, -1/+8What the hell was he supposed to do? Go shake hands with everyone in the crowd?
- YodaOfDarkness, on 07/18/2009, -2/+8Bill Plaschke hates Manny just like Bill-O hates Barack.
- veritas80, on 07/18/2009, -1/+7Bill Plashke is a moron. Here's a little sample from his twitter feed when Manny was "rehabing"
I didn't go to albuquerque, and I won't go anywhere else he "rehabs.". He shouldn't be allowed to touch a bat for 50 games period

So it takes Plaschke almost exactly 3 days to contradict himself.
As for the whole steroid in baseball issue, I'm not saying I don't care, but players have been doing whatever they can to get an advantage since the beginning of the game. Spitballs, greeneys, pine tar, corked bats, and on and on. Steroids are just the evolutionary next step. And don't give me that "Look how bad baseball is!" routine. Do you really think other professional sport stars aren't doing things that stretch the boundaries? - 3tcp, on 07/18/2009, -0/+6That isn't showing appreciation, that's doing your job. The guy gets paid a small fortune every season to do that.
- QQMore, on 07/18/2009, -1/+7Doesn't matter much to me what people think of Manny. I'm rather ambivalent about him myself. But Plaschke is a talentless hack. ***** him.
- Tom042, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5ROFLMAO! You guys on the west coast are just now seeing what Manny really is. I'm Glad you have him.
- almostnormal, on 07/18/2009, -0/+5None of this is a surprise to us Sox fans. There were very good reasons why he was traded.
- omarbonilla, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6*left fielder - sorry, I got soccer in my baseball.
- pkon, on 07/18/2009, -3/+7Seems like athletes these days just don't want to show any class. Along side Manny Ramirez might as well add Brock Lesnar also.
- bci84, on 07/18/2009, -1/+5He cheated, why do people still like him?
- Pooty, on 07/18/2009, -2/+6This isn't exactly news...he was a dick in Boston and is still a dick in LA
- turbodiesel, on 07/18/2009, -2/+6Plashke is an *****. How can someone who has written for the Times as long as he has have no clue whats going on in the city.
He's one of the biggest jokes in LA, and considering some of the douche's around here, thats saying a lot. - smacksaw, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Hate him or not Plaschke told it like it was. However, considering the quotes from the fans, it looks like they are bit defencive towards him since he's in the heart of Mannywood trying to stir it up.
- KDX200rider, on 07/18/2009, -0/+3Manny is a major league douche, I was glad to see him leave Boston, the Red Soxs are a better team without him. I hope the LA fans appreciate Manny when he starts to "jog it out" for them.
- omarbonilla, on 07/17/2009, -3/+6Way I see it he's not quite expendable, but certainly replaceable. We stayed at the top of the standings without him for 50 games, and with a decent midfielder we would definitely not miss him. But star power is star power I guess, and here in LA the masses feed off it like nowhere else.
- brownsound00, on 07/18/2009, -6/+8***** Manny
- murph1004, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2I hate Bill Plaschke
- endustry, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2Most people who like him probably can't spell the word Integrity let alone know what it means. He's like a Professional Wrestler who just so happens to play baseball.
- XISUPERMANIX, on 07/18/2009, -3/+5I used to LOVE baseball but it is just dying. It's like everyday there is someone else being outed for using steroids. If that isn't bad enough they only get a slap on the wrist. The players involved in the Black Sox scandal were banned from the MLB for life. Pete Rose, banned for life. And yet these guys are blatantly cheating and are not banned for life. Not only do I feel cheated as a fan who grew up loving these guys only to find out they are cheaters but they also send a horrible message to any child that wants to be the next Sammy Sosa or Manny Ramirez. Sadly the MLB only cares about money, if they banned everyone who tested positive right now, all these players with household names would be gone.
- smacksaw, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2If I was GM of a team, any player represented by Scott Boras would be off-limits. And if a player wanted a trade? All they would have to do is get Boras as an agent and I'd find a way to ship their ass right out of there.
It's amazing that Boras got all of that money for Manny when no one else even wanted him at all. The Dodgers are nuts. - steezyyy, on 07/18/2009, -0/+2How does anyone expect him to be running around all excited when he's still getting boo'd when he walks up to the plate. It's better to be quite and to himself then running around like nothing happened. He's done the whole Manny being Manny *****, but that wasn't every game.
- OasisR123, on 07/18/2009, -1/+3yes, and making it rain in the process.....
- luteslinger, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1buried for being unoriginal
- luteslinger, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2I love it! Dodgers stink. Go Giants!
- radio1mike, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1Yes, but baseball always has this pure child-like appeal to it. It's supposed to be a game for children and played by real men
Steroids are bad for the game because they reduce men to chattel status. As much as I love football and hate steroids, I can wrap my mind around that because it is a contact sport.
Baseball is not. All of baseball's positions do not require muscle mass to perform well. Sure it helps (and a lot) but not necessary. Did Ted Williams, Joe DiMaggio, Cal Ripken or Reggie Jackson look any more ripped or capable than the average kid's Dad at those times. That's the beauty of baseball. - radio1mike, on 07/19/2009, -0/+1As a Sox fan, I can't help but snicker wildly. I am practically giddy.
You wanna blame someone, blame Frank McCourt, the Boston real-estate developer, who failed to buy the Red Sox. Thank God Lucchino and Co. came out on top on that one. So what does dear old Frankie do? He goes and buys himself the Dodgers trying the be the Bosox West Coast by buying Boston shed-off retreads to boot.
There WAS A REASON why Boston tried to unload Ramirez (despite his monstrous production) for the last several seasons he was here.
Unfortunately for you LA sports fans, you have that mess on your doorstep now. - Ajajadude, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1I don't know what Dodger fans expect. The sad thing is, a lot of them don't care he doesn't care (or don't seem to realize it). I love Manny, loved him with the Sox, but I never once thought he gave a ***** about us fans in Boston.
He's a spoiled brat that needs a slap to the face from the fans for him to react. Remember when the Red Sox put him on waivers several years ago when he was acting up and no one claimed him? He behaved for quite some time after that. - xjeffx, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1intagrety
- Tegurit34, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Plaschke is a fantastic reporter. I've been to a seminar where he was a guest speaker and he had all kinds of interesting stories to tell.
But holy hell do his opinions suck, and to make matters worse his readership is so strong that he's powerful enough to put pressure on franchise executives to make bad decisions. The man is a writer and a reporter -- not an analyst. - Tegurit34, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2"The players involved in the Black Sox scandal were banned from the MLB for life. Pete Rose, banned for life. And yet these guys are blatantly cheating and are not banned for life."
Who says baseball had it right when they banned the 1919 White Sox or Pete Rose? The Sox players indicated in the scandal were found not guilty in a court of law and Rose never gambled on his team. Both instances had punishments that didn't fit the crime, so why on earth would we use them as the barometer for performance enhancing drug penalties? - xjeffx, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1We're not.
Signed,
The rest of the NL West.
Scratch that.
The rest of the MLB. - endustry, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1intergritty
- QQMore, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1I'd have more respect for him if he admitted he sucked at writing.
- Tegurit34, on 07/18/2009, -1/+2***** Bill Plaschke.
- jcayvazi, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1To believe Bill Plaschke on any topic, one must first have no functioning gray matter.
He is the ultimate dripping sack of excrement, fouling the Los Angeles sports scene. - xjeffx, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1Life-long Dodgers fan here, and not proud of Man-Ram. He took his punishment though but I for one, won't be as much of a fan as I thought I would be. That being said, fans thinking they have deserve a wave or something by a player just because they have nothing better to do than worship a sports star is pretty pathetic.
Bill Plaschke is hit or miss with me. His pieces can be good, but when he has nothing interesting to write about and has to pull something like this out of his ass is just insulting to LA Times readers. - xjeffx, on 07/18/2009, -0/+1He's a good writer, just a biased, ***** human being.
