- jatkins679, on 11/03/2008, -1/+11Sorry but that was no 'accident'. Saying it was an 'accident' means that no one was to blame. BOTH drivers are to blame, they were both drunk. The fact that the dead woman didn't apparently do anything illegal/wrong except that she herself was drunk driving is irrelevant, IMHO. I mean, how can you say that, gee, maybe if she were sober she could have avoided his drunken driving. Remember: had she survived, you can bet she would have been charged with DUI, too.
This was no accident. This was an instance of two adults not acting responsibly, the result being one died and the other is going to go to jail. - sunsetprojects, on 11/03/2008, -1/+11Why drink and drive?? Why not cab it?? I feel if you drink and drive you deserve whats coming to you.
- jatkins679, on 11/03/2008, -1/+7I feel bad for his children and the victim and her kids. But he's just going to have to face the music like any of us would. And that probably means jail time.
- inactive, on 11/02/2008, -3/+9the accident was a tragedy all around
- ScottyAnimal, on 11/03/2008, -0/+4If the defense is going to argue that his children need him out of jail for support then he should also be paying for the children of the mother he killed. That would only be fair. Especially if he doesn't get sever jail time and fines. Which he should.
- jatkins679, on 11/03/2008, -1/+4Bitterness and revenge solve nothing. But Leyritz should be held accountable for his behavior and actions just like any of us would be if we were in his place.
It's ironic you mention 'real life' because Leyritz is getting a real dose of real life right now. Unfortunately, he children are going to suffer because of his behavior. While that might not be fair or seem fair, who alone is to blame for that? Leyritz.
Maybe he should have thought more about his kids before he acted so irresponsibly. I mean, one reason I don't commit crimes (aside from the fact that, well, that would be wrong) is that I don't want my daughter to grow up without me around. Maybe Leyritz should have thought about that beforehand. But it sure seems like none of three parents (Leyritz, his wife, or the dead woman) really followed through with that thought. - gnixon70, on 11/03/2008, -1/+4The man got drunk, drove and killed this lady because of it. We are supposed to feel good that he's rebuilding his life? Am I missing something here?
Course this is the kind of journalism that we have come to suspect from the NYT. And they wonder why they are hemorrhaging money - MarkOfTheDead, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3Alright, Not to sound like an ***** here, But I couldn't get past the first page without raging so hard I was clenching my teeth and giving myself a headache.
Why does everyone sympathize with a ***** alcohol drinker who doesn't and refuses to act responsible?
I don't give two flying ***** how awful his life is now or that his kids don't have a father now, he killed someone's mother and although it's still not an even playing field, It is what it is. If he cared so much for his kids he'd have lived a little more responsibly to help insure that he'll be in their lives as long as possible.
For the sympathizers that say "aww take it easy, one day it will be you" well ***** YOU, and no it won't because I'm responsible and sleep at or cab home from where I'm drinking If I know I can't handle myself behind the wheel of a car, I don't put myself in a situation where I could potentially kill someone's mother.
I wish there was a "Bury because sympathizing with drunk murderers is ***** *****" button But I'll settle for not digging it at all. - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3Isn't it odd how drunk drivers usually survive their crashes, but the other driver usually dies? The Onion should do a video on this, showing a minivan soccer mom who, for safety-sake, gives her kids sippy cups of beer to get them drunk, in the event they're hit by a drunk driver.
- Bith8654, on 11/03/2008, -0/+3Actually it was almost definitely far more than two beers in Leyritz's case. See for yourself, the link below has a blood alcohol level calculator. The only factor we don't know for sure is how long he had been drinking, but since he didn't take the test until three hours after he was in the accident, you can put at least three hours down. He is listed on baseball stats websites as weighing 195 pounds during his baseball career, and he probably doesn't weigh much different now, so you can set it to 200 pounds, or even 180 pounds if you want to be generous. Set the drink to 12 oz. beer and you come up with a .02 blood alcohol level. Leyritz scored a whopping .14, which would bring him to 7 or 8 drinks. Your body can process about 1 drink an hour so, given that he waited three hours before the test, he probably had 10+ drinks. He was in absolutely no shape to be driving, and now multiple families are suffering because of his poor decision.

- K4Lic0, on 11/03/2008, -1/+3He played for the Yankees, remember? They don't even allow their players to have facial hair.. much less "tarnish" their legacy.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2Sorry to hear that, losing a friend always hurts :(
I'd like to say better nobody than someone, but at least no one else was injured.
My friend was a sober one coming home from taco bell :/
I just hate when there's a bunch of but's after someone acts irresponsibly and someone else gets killed. end result, two kids without a mom now because of an irresponsible man. there should be no "but his life, his career, his kids, etc". He obviously didn't care that much about his own family or someone else's so maybe being stripped of his career and kids without ***** loopholes will set a precedent for other athletes to act responsibly. - inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+2I had a friend who died in a wreck after drinking, hit a tree. As bad as it sounds, I later thought to myself, better him than someone innocent he might have hit.
- multimed, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1How is he rebuilding his life "IN WAKE OF manslaughter trial" if hasn't actually gone to trial yet? You keep on using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
- inactive, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1I agree. The wake of a ship is behind it.
- Scrappy1850, on 11/03/2008, -0/+1if you thought you were suppossed to feel good after reading this article, then you missed something.
- smacksaw, on 11/03/2008, -2/+2The problem with us as Americans is that we're stuck in the past. People care that he's getting assistance from the Baseball Assistance Team?
"Oh the kids can't heal"...yeah, and I'm sure punishing Jim's kids is helpful. And of course we're not living in the past if we're punishing someone by denying them assistance before they've been tried and convicted in a court. It's like...we're so conditioned for punishment and revenge. It's ingrained in us.
People need to move FORWARD and get this all behind them and start rebuilding. This is a lesson to all of us - this is not how you deal with this sort of inexplicable and incomprehensible situation. When you have tough times, you don't solve them by being bitter and vengeful. That might work in crappy action films, but it's not real life. - Skapocalypse, on 11/03/2008, -2/+2I felt some sympathy for Leyritz up until I read the "I love you momma!! Rest in peace” line. That almost brought me to tears. Hard to deal with the thought of losing a Mother, especially while you're both so young.
In this kind of a case, if you're drinking and driving, you deserve a punishment. If you're drinking and driving, then kill a young mother, you deserve severe punishment. Just take the cab, rather than drive drunk, you're saving money on the court expenses. - PanicAK, on 11/03/2008, -1/+1One simple mistake can ruin your life forever.

- sparsely, on 11/03/2008, -3/+1two beers is not justification for calling a cab but it's justification for being charged with manslaughter. :\
