- thegamingguy, on 03/24/2009, -0/+24Was pulling for the USA after that huge comeback to get into the semis. Oh well, congrats to Ichiro and co.
- SnuKs, on 03/24/2009, -2/+22Darvish was bout to commit Seppuku after that 9th till Ichiro saved his ass...
Great game! - Armstrong3, on 03/24/2009, -5/+24So then why do we still call it The WORLD Series? Clearly the Phillies are not the WORLD Champions.
- smacksaw, on 03/24/2009, -0/+19That was one of the best baseball games I have seen in a long time.
Of note - during the game, the commentators remarked that Japan simply takes the best athletes and then finds a position for them.
That's the problem with the US. Rollins was awesome. He needed to be in there. Dunn? LOL...if you MUST keep Jeter happy, put HIM at 1B! - PPCG4, on 03/24/2009, -1/+19I work in Seoul as a teacher. Many kids had the day off to watch this game. All the staff was gathered around a computer in the staff room watching the match. Tough loss.
- zwendkos, on 03/24/2009, -0/+11Stayed up past 1 am EST to watch the finish of this game -- well worth it. There was a World-Series-like atmosphere and feel to the game and the ending didn't disappoint. Both teams played incredible defense all game and there were a number of clutch hits. Now if Team USA could only match their intensity...

- vl002001, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9i guess the answer to my question would be: "attitude"
- goleopards1, on 03/24/2009, -1/+10Now if America only cared about international competitions...
- Weip, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9balls belong to us
- malonie, on 03/24/2009, -0/+9This is the real WORLD SERIES
- awesometastic1, on 03/24/2009, -0/+8The U.S. manager was playing these games like they were all-star games. The U.S. players not involved are a bunch of whiny children. "It will mess up my routine". So basically poorly managed and no heart in the american players not involved.
Even the announcers commented on this as if the players not involved were in the right. They talked about how MLB players would never be willing to start practicing in January like most of these other teams did. I wanted to be like "You know Japan has 5 major leaguers who started working out with that team in December right? And the same type of thing with a lot of other countries teams that had a lot of major leaguers." Not only that, but Japanese baseball's season is almost as long as america's and more popular as well in japan and all those players were more than happy to give up their off months.
Basically, our players are spoiled babies and our managers seem to think they shouldn't manage to win these games. - kdoig, on 03/24/2009, -2/+9This was a great game and a great tournament. USA needs to get off their high horse and put the best interests of the game at heart. I didn't hear excuses coming from Puerto Rico, Venezula or the Dominican and those teams had just as many major leagues on their roster as the USA. Those teams also played with much more intensity than the USA. The US couldn't cut it, stop making excuses...the title belongs to Japan for the next 4 years - Deal with it!
- smacksaw, on 03/24/2009, -4/+11The world according to MLB:
USA: 97%
Canada: 3%
Though if you asked Toronto, they'd say they're 100%. - malonie, on 03/24/2009, -1/+8Sushi beats Kimchee. That game is awesome!
- BluesFan, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6Congrats to Japan,as for South Korea and U.S don't worry your time will come. Here in Canada we went through a huge drought with winning in Hockey then we went through a huge hot streak.
It comes and goes, you will have your day. - wolfing, on 03/24/2009, -1/+7The 'World' series? you mean that series where 95% of the teams are from the US and one from Canada?
- Renian, on 03/24/2009, -3/+9Well what do you expect when the entire Japanese team was using mechs?
- wolfing, on 03/24/2009, -1/+7Maybe after these 2 world defeats US baseball players will actually want to play in 4 years for national honor and not money... or maybe not
- Datcyde, on 03/24/2009, -2/+8Yes Ichiro!!!!!! Go Japan!!!!!!
- kdoig, on 03/24/2009, -0/+6you are an idiot
- MaxxusFlamus, on 03/24/2009, -2/+8I can imagine it sucks for them.
But the fact that they crushed Venezuela so badly is something to be damn proud of. - punkcat, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5gojira*
- sprNmgcHlmt, on 03/24/2009, -2/+7the us can't compete with the world in baseball. we're too self absorbed and not willing to sacrifice.
it's time to change the name of the world series. because the world kicks our ass on a regular basis. - vl002001, on 03/24/2009, -6/+11why does the USA suck at everything now?
- ohwell05, on 03/24/2009, -3/+8as a Korean, the loss was difficult to fathom, especially after the last dash of hope with the extra forced inning. Japan did end up outplaying Korea, and that is no simple accomplishment. Congrats to the land of the rising sun, but HISTORY WILL ABSOLVE US! See you next time bitches
- buzz, on 03/24/2009, -0/+5Now I'm hungry.
- totomaster, on 03/24/2009, -9/+13Konguraturashon!! (●^o^●)
- LilJimmyNordin, on 03/24/2009, -2/+6Home Lun!!!
- JCEEZ, on 03/24/2009, -1/+5Japan and Korea's league are over in Oct....same as MLB. They just come out in full force and find it an honor to play for their country..... instead of the US who are busy negotiating contracts and getting ready for Spring Training.
I really freakin hope that we show up to the next WBC, get top players, and worry about winning games instead of letting pitchers get a work out. Embarrassing that we lose at WBC. What's next, is China going to make a better Apple Pie! - soodiddy, on 03/24/2009, -0/+4Incredible Game... I also stayed up until 1:30AM EST to finish the game. but more than anything.. did anyone else find the ESPN Commentators annoying?
- JCEEZ, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3pride > contractual obligations
- pellelepew, on 03/25/2009, -0/+3History will absolve us? Wtf? "Absolve" you of what losing? how does that work? maybe you should look absolve up in the dictionary Einstein.
- vagrantwade, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3Baseball season starts in two weeks. A lot of players didn't want to be involved. I don't blame them. They have contractual obligations to a team.
- JCEEZ, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3lol @vl002001
sad but true. - taibo, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3This is like saying as an 'actual' soccer fan, you don't care about the World Cup and would rather just see Man. U play.
Oh wait nvm you're from America you don't like international competitions that are actually international. - heartoftofu, on 03/24/2009, -2/+5There's a historical premise for the name. It would be silly to go off and change the name just because of the introduction of the WBC. Also, how do you know the Phillies wouldn't win? Have you seen the two teams play? The WBC proves nothing about the level of Major League Baseball vs. that of other countries.
First of all, many MLB players are out there playing for their respective countries in the WBC. Secondly, it's pretty obvious that Americans as club owners and people really don't care about international competition as much as other countries. Nobody shed a tear when the Dream Team lost, nobody sheds a tear when we don't make it to the World Cup, and quite frankly, nobody will shed a tear here. Just a short look at the roster would quickly make it clear that team USA was not a representation of the MLB's best players by a long shot because club owners care more about ensuring the health and safety of their players for the MLB than they do about winning the WBC and also the fact that many MLB players went off to go play for other countries. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if they are hoping for the USA to get eliminated quickly so they can have their players back...
The truth is that the USA and MLB (no, they are not synonymous) have nothing to prove on this stage. The USA has nothing to prove because there is no purely American baseball league anymore. The MLB has nothing to prove because despite the introduction of the WBC, the MLB is still the proving ground for players of all nationalities. Despite the fact that they represent New York, you can hardly call the Yankees an "American" team. It's a privately owned organization with players from all over the world that happens to be based in New York. The same applies to every other MLB team. If you see the WBC as proof that the overall level of the other baseball leagues is truly on par with the MLB, you need a serious reality check. These are all All-Star teams often borrowing players currently playing in the MLB. If team USA was truly a representation of the MLB's All-Star level, I can probably guarantee you that you'd be seeing a very different picture today, especially since all those other WBC teams would be stripped of their MLB players...
Despite the fact that MLB happens to be based in the USA, I can assure you that the World Series is very much an international competition of the highest caliber. - divinediva, on 03/24/2009, -4/+7The game was the latest in an intense rivalry between the Asian powerhouses.
- stubear, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3What best interests? Baseball is still as popular in most of the countries represented in the WBC as it ever was. I didn't see too many European teams in there other then Italy and the Netherlands. The Netherlands used MLB players from Dutch colonies such as Aruba. Italy did the same. So, baseball is still popular in Latin America and Asia but the Europeans still dislike it intensely because we call Football Soccer (or some other really silly reason I'm sure).
- hiriumi, on 03/24/2009, -3/+6I was really happy to be Japanese last night.
- kdoig, on 03/24/2009, -0/+3Wrong.
It was named that in a hope that other nations would participate, but it never happened. - Namakemono, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Imagine that line taken out of context..
- wolfing, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2if that's so, then Italy's soccer league should end in the 'world series of soccer', and Spain's soccer league should end in the 'world series of soccer', same with England's soccer league, we'd have like 10 different 'world series of soccer'.
- hakluytbean, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Now that's not fair. If there was no baseball coverage on digg I'd have almost no reason to randomly insert a reference to cricket.
- hmmmok, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2WBC is every 3 years. Just saying...
- Cthulhu2008, on 03/24/2009, -1/+3and Vancouver
- stubear, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2You apparently don't watch very much baseball during the regular season. Do a Google search for "joe morgan sucks" and you'll find out what many baseball fans have known for years of listening to that idiot on ESPN. I don't recall but I thought Steve Phillips was in on the commentary and that guy is a walking baseball Encyclopedia (same goes for Peter Gammons when they use him during the regular season) but even he's not enough to make me sit through a few hours of Joe Morgan stupidity. Fox Sports doesn't fare much better either as we have to deal with Tim McCarver. Not only is he an idiot, he's clearly a partisan commentator. Do a Google search for "tim mccarver sucks" and you'll find about the same number of websites discussing his utter stupidity.
- Illu1, on 03/24/2009, -0/+2Epic
- realmadrid2727, on 03/24/2009, -0/+24, they changed that. Next one is in 2013.
