- jennlansing21, on 02/12/2009, -0/+12Ichiro can do everything. How great if he actually pitches and pitches well.
- chezidom, on 02/12/2009, -0/+6I thought it was a tongue twister at first
- jfujita, on 02/12/2009, -1/+6This is him pitching in 1996
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoOnzwJOAFM - Tegurit34, on 02/12/2009, -0/+5In the end, you're right. However, they still have influence on decision making, and Ichiro is a pretty smart guy when it comes to the welfare of the Mariners, and his career.
- RedStateRetard, on 02/12/2009, -1/+5Don't do it Ichiro!
google: José Conseco pitching - awesometastic1, on 02/12/2009, -1/+4Mariners full season ticker holder here. No, he will not pitch in the Classic. GM JZ said today, no way.
He would be great with a fastball that has topped 95 in the past and a crazy good curveball (according to Johnny Olereud whom Ichiro used to pitch to in practice). However, injury risk, however minor, will keep the Mariners saying NO! - awesometastic1, on 02/12/2009, -0/+3the difference is Ichiro keeps himself in pretty much the best shape in baseball (i'm including limberness and what not). He stretches his legs and arms and back in between every pitch in the outfield for instance. I'll say that again: EVERY PITCH
And if someone is on base he will also throw his glove hard at the ground to get his arm ready for a potential hard throw to the plate or third. - degenerasian, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2No chance the Mariners let him. Teams don't even want real pitchers pitching in this thing.
- Tegurit34, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I would absolutely love to see this, but I would proceed to ***** my pants in fear the whole time.
- FlyingPhoenix, on 02/12/2009, -0/+2I did. Annnd i didn't find anything.
- tensaibaka, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Shingo Takatsu, who went over to MLB to pitch for the White Sox, then the Mets.

So Ichiro, an outfielder, comes in relief to pitch to an outfielder (Hideki Matsui), who then is pinch hit for, by a relief pitcher (Shingo Takatsu).....confused? - tensaibaka, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1He actually already has pitched once before, in the 1996 All-Star game in Japan:

Now see if you recognize who he pitched to? - Fritzed, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Mariner's management is saying that he won't pitch, but it sounds more like a plea then an ultimatum.
http://web.worldbaseballclassic.com/news/article.j ... - brownsound00, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1haha, i could have guess it was matsui before you said that. regardless, ichiro looks like a real pitcher there... his form is pretty good.
edit: i just saw matsui in the start of the vid... and then commented. i don't actually know who that is off hand, but the comments say Shingo Takatsu. don't know who that is.
Moreover, the announcers are freakin awesome! and the crowd! maaan... we need that here - Podunkparte, on 02/12/2009, -0/+1Yay for a link from my newspaper!
Oh, and Ichiro will not be pitching... Jack Z said so - Cannon49, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1The article says that the Mariners have absolutely NO say in the matter.
- awesometastic1, on 02/12/2009, -1/+1@Cannon49. Of course they officially have no say in the matter; only the on the field manager gets to decide. What they do have say in is if he even gets to play at all. They hold the contract for him for many years to come. He can only play if they say he can play. If they say no, then he is breaking his contract by not showing up to spring training. As far as anything to do with baseball is concerned, they own the rights. All players under contract must ask permission with the team they are contracted with if they want to play in the classic. So the Mariners could easily say "if you are going to have him pitch; he can't play"
- JCEEZ, on 02/11/2009, -8/+3Man, we (USA) freakin BETTER win.
