- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -8/+89Can boys now join EVERY girls' and women's activities if those are run by the government?
When I was at college a long time ago, the school had special transportation set up FOR WOMEN ONLY to take them to and from the parking lot at night. Apparently, there were some females who were afraid of being attacked, molested, assaulted, or raped at night. So, the school, using school funds partly offset by student fees and government outlays, had paid employees and vans assigned.
My buddy and I didn't feel like walking one night, so we asked the dispatcher at her temporary shelter set up to run the vans if they could take us. She looked angrily at me and said that we'd have to wait for ALL the women to be taken...then maybe we'd get a ride. So, we waited and eventually got a lift. It would have been faster to simply walk, but I had a point to be made.
Are men and women really different? If we are, then you have to admit ALL the differences and deal accordingly.
By the way, a lot of boys should sign up for that girls' softball team. See what happens. - meruru, on 01/04/2009, -1/+74This shouldn't even be an issue. Either there are seperate men and women's teams or if there is one team it is open to everyone.

◥☼▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙▲⊙☼◤ - Pedobear, on 01/04/2009, -0/+14Speaking as a girl, I'd rather they create a women's baseball team than place a girl on the men's team. Most girls (with a few exceptions) can't really compete with the boys athletically, and the double standard this situation creates is a bit awkward. Unfortunately, the solution I prefer would be, in many ways, far more costly than the solution they came up with.
Creating a women's baseball team doesn't seem like an easily manageable idea, since it requires other schools in the area to set up similar teams as well as a league...and then there's issues with financing, student interest, and whether or not the baseball team would undercut "recruiting" and funding for the softball team. I still want to see it happen, though. - johnhummel, on 01/04/2009, -0/+14Let's see:
1. The school has a softball team for girls, but not a baseball team. She didn't want to play on the softball team.
2. She was asking to be allowed to try out. Not suing to be on the team, just to try out.
From that point of view, I say fine. As John Stuart Mill wrote (or as I paraphrase): if women suck at it by nature, then let them try, and if they suck they won't play. If we're wrong and they can do it as well, then we get stronger by having more people who can play.
I would have let her at least try out. It doesn't hurt anybody except for the people who need their "no girls allowed" signs kept current. - Conwaysb0718, on 01/04/2009, -0/+14if you cant, you should file a discrimination lawsuit against them.
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -0/+13And Disney has signed rights to make an inspirational movie about following your dreams on it!
- Shiner76, on 01/04/2009, -0/+12Sorry - but softball is not even close to baseball. Even fast pitch softball.
- lewystud, on 01/04/2009, -0/+11anybody remember this story in mighty ducks
- kirado4, on 01/04/2009, -1/+12As long as they don't have any girls only team sports etc.. I don't see anything wrong with it.. as long as they can play as well as anyone else... but the school did have a girls softball team allready.. I hope they will let boys play softball if they want to..
- JohnFlux, on 01/04/2009, -0/+10If there was no guy rugby team, then you're point would be valid.
- rsbryswrrl, on 01/04/2009, -4/+14If she can keep up with the guys and perform equally well, why wouldn't she be allowed on the team? I'm sure she's probably better than some of the guys on the team, and at least more motivated. We had girls on my h.s. football team. Granted they were kickers, but they still could hang with the boys in practice and training. Softball sucks anyway.
- meruru, on 01/04/2009, -1/+11At the elite level I'd mostly agree with you, but at the High School level the talent (as well as strength and size) level is a lot lower. If there is no women's team than they should be allowed to try out with the men. Besides if what you say is true then no woman would ever be good enough to make the team.
And #2 is such BS, learn some damn self control. It's like that old argument that the rape victim was asking for it because she was dressed provocatively - inactive, on 01/04/2009, -1/+10

- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -3/+10So, we're all equal when it suits the woman and her support team of activists, politicians, and bureaucrats and when she can get an advantage. But, we're not all equal when a woman's social, physical, mental, etc. weaknesses are revealed?
You cannot have it both ways.
If a woman is going to have government-supported special treatment even for legitimate concerns like rape, then it is unfair and hypocritical to not point out the woman's other concerns even when it may not suit her.
If a woman is too weak and passive to walk home at night, then why are the activists demanding equal treatment in other areas where he weaknesses and passivity would play a major role too...like military combat?
Why say that women are equal and demand equal treatment, but then demand unequal treatment when it suits them?
THAT IS HYPOCRISY AND UNFAIRNESS. - Tman00178, on 01/04/2009, -0/+7This is no big deal a girl from my school tried out and made it.
She didn't play much but she got the most publicity of anyone on the team. - thelif, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7If I am not physically stronger than a woman would I be able to compete in their league then?
- thelif, on 01/05/2009, -2/+9What was the point in saying football team? Wouldn't just team have made your point?
What was the point in saying my school? Wouldn't just school have made your point?
ADJECTIVES. - dmazzoni, on 01/05/2009, -0/+7The average man is stronger, faster, and more coordinated than the average woman. It's also true that the strongest, fastest, and most coordinated person in the world is (so far) always a man.
However, there are some women who are far stronger, faster, and coordinated than average. It's not unusual at all for a high school girl to be stronger, faster, and more coordinated than the average person on a boy's team. - BobSutan, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6A-*****-men.
Don't believe me? How many women have sued to sign up for Selective Service? Yeah, that's what I thought. - Jeepinator, on 01/04/2009, -8/+14I'm tired of women thinking they have some sort of right to play a men's sport. They can have leagues of there own. There are reasons that women and men need to be separated in terms of athletics.
1. Men are stronger and could easily hurt a woman
2. Separation allows men to keep their minds in the game instead of on women
3. Women are clinically proven to not be as coordinated as men. Why would you want a woman on your baseball team?
4. Men are faster. A woman could not keep up with the pace of the game.
There are other reasons as well, but those are big ones.
The only sports where men and women can really play together is Golf and Tennis, but even both of those are dominated by men these days. - ertw1, on 01/04/2009, -1/+7He'd be laughed at? In general it's acceptable for girls to participate in (traditionally) all-male sports, careers, etc but not the other way around. I'm not trying to say that it's fair or not, that's just the way it is, and I don't expect to see many men try out for an all-girls school sports team to make a point. I don't think his teammates or coach would appreciate what he is doing either lol, he'd be a sorry looking bench-warmer.
- BobSutan, on 01/05/2009, -0/+6It's be a great way to get a scholarship. Think about it. Men usually excel at sports compared to women. Look at record holders and general statistics. A couple of guys on a girls softball team would be a significant advantage in the grand scheme of things, all things being equal.
- unct, on 01/04/2009, -1/+7Hell, if she's that good, let her play. I would think the coach would want to field the best team regardless of gender.
- BobSutan, on 01/05/2009, -1/+6By that logic the girl in the article should have quit her bitchin and just joined the softball team.
- Shiner76, on 01/04/2009, -0/+5OK, the "composition" of the game is the same - but if you've ever played either/both sports, you pretty much know that the actual game play is much different.
Another example - anyone who has played 2-on-2 beach volleyball (competitively) knows its a completely different style of game play to indoor, 6-player team volleyball.
The point being, just knowing that the composition of a game is similar does not mean one can actually succeed at it (at the same level one may be used to) - zaferk, on 01/04/2009, -2/+7She only won the right to tryout, but lets pray to god she doesnt make the team
- yacks, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5I don't know about your argument because men can easily be robbed at gunpoint.. no matter how strong the guy is.. it's kind of hard to beat a gun..I mean what if you're a guy and afraid of being robbed at gunpoint or assaulted by a gang of other guys?
- STARTSOMETHING, on 01/05/2009, -0/+5Or girls volleyball team. Try getting an application for the sales floor, At Victoria secret. I asked. They straight up said, No.
- Barackalypse, on 01/04/2009, -0/+4Screw arbitrary restrictions, if she's good enough to play, let her. However, I don't want to subsequently hear any complaining that she's treated differently or that the boys behavior offends her sensibilities (provided they aren't harassing her) or that the program needs to change to accommodate her.
