2008 Tampa Bay Rays: $44MM - duggynyc, on 09/01/2008, -0/+18The Yanks need to rebuild their core. Guys like Petitte, Jeter, Mo, and Posada are not getting any younger.

=*( - BigPapi, on 09/02/2008, -0/+10As a lifelong Red Sox fan it's great to see Tampa Bay in first place. They always finished last, year after year. It's about time a young team with so much talent made it to the top. It's good for baseball.
- whoomp123, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9manny will be a free agent next year. I guess you haven't been paying attention....
- stellarceltic, on 09/01/2008, -5/+14It's not sad.... at all. It's awesome.
- GregFD3S, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9Dugg for no Dodger fans commenting yet.
Dodger fans don't show up until the third inning anyways. - badenglishihave, on 09/01/2008, -5/+14I'm a huge Sox fan but I'm not about to hate on the Yankees... yes, it makes me smile that they probably won't make the playoffs but if the Sox left Fenway I would feel the same as Yankees fans do.
I love to see the Yankees fail but some of their classier fans deserve to cherish some of these last moments with their team. We'll have our moment soon enough. - NeoCortex, on 09/02/2008, -0/+9Here's two reasons:
1. Tampa Bay
2. Boston - whoomp123, on 09/02/2008, -1/+9George was always a little crazy but his sons Hank and Hal are going to completely screw up the Yankees.
- BillyIsCool, on 09/02/2008, -2/+10I'm 19, live in Brooklyn and as a Yankee fan my entire life, I do not know how it feels to NOT make the playoffs.
I really hope I don't get to see that day :( - GregFD3S, on 09/02/2008, -2/+9How is this a surprise? The Rays are killing it right now, and the Red Sox probably won't even get the wild card.
- badenglishihave, on 09/02/2008, -2/+9I've never chanted "Yankees suck" because it really hasn't been true, but I think at long last it might be accurate.
Of course, that doesn't make you any less of an idiot for screaming it like a buffoon. - Brennn10, on 09/01/2008, -2/+9How does the highest paid team not make the playoffs?
- Ajajadude, on 09/02/2008, -0/+7The problem with the Yankees has been their desire to go out and acquire older guys who have been all-stars for years, but are at the point where they might have already peaked.
- stellarceltic, on 09/01/2008, -6/+12...and rightfully so.
- grimoren189, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7we'll be back next year, $88 million coming off the payroll. Here come Mark Teixeira and C.C. Sabathia.
- tekiek, on 09/01/2008, -7/+13Let the Yankee hating begin
- plainOldFool, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6Krypton sucks
- rupprupp29, on 09/02/2008, -5/+11As a Pirates fan, the only thing I ever have left to cheer for come August / September is cheering against the Yankees.
Seeing the Yankees miss the playoffs this year will be the happiest that baseball has made me in a long, long time. - Apocalyptic0n3, on 09/02/2008, -1/+7If the MLB had been smart the final game at Yankee Stadium would have been the Sox. That would have been a game of truly epic proportions.
- GregFD3S, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6Must be nice.
- joncannon, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6Bow down to the new ruler of the AL East, the Tampa Bay Rays.
That's right, and Tampa has a very young squad. This isn't a one year deal. - GregFD3S, on 09/02/2008, -0/+6No! "Hey, there's always next season". - Cubs Fans
They haven't won a World Series title in 100 years. (Longest Drought)
The Indians haven't won a World Series in 60 years. (Second Longest)
The Giants haven't won a World Series in 54 years. (Third Longest)
The Mets have no room to talk, you guys just won in 1986! - Ajajadude, on 09/02/2008, -1/+6It's not the amount of money, it's how you spend it.
- kds405, on 09/02/2008, -7/+12Let's Go Mets.
- Farmer77, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Pirates ownership stinks. You guys gave away Nady and your best reliever for next to nothing.
- ariez84, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Dodgers amazing? Are you on the same year as I am?
- billjimbob, on 09/02/2008, -2/+6Sometimes it isn't your year... I know it's hard to blame it on injuries when your payroll is through the roof, but when you pay big money, you're paying that money to the starters, not depth players. Here are people that missed at least 15 games this year for the Yankees, off the top of my head:
Hughes
Chamberlain
Hughes
Kennedy
Pavano (well, duh)
You can make a respectable starting rotation off just those 5 guys. Also...
Posada
Jeter
A-rod
Matsui
Damon
Bruney
That's 2/3rds of their outfield, half the infield, their catcher, 5 starters (!), and their catcher. As much as I'd like to blame Girardi (especially when he can't teach his team to bunt), it's hard to look past the injuries. - stellarceltic, on 09/02/2008, -0/+4Not only are they incredible now, but they have a kickass farm system, so this won't be a one or two year thing...
- DephexTwin, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3I take it you are asking for one of us to kill you?
- cresswga, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Hooray for our first winning season!
- fatTJ, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3I am a die hard yankee fan. and can truly say that we dont deserve ***** this year. Tampa deserves the division and then some. Now that i am about 99% sure we won't be making the playoffs this year unless we get hit by lightning made of undetectable steroids, i can be the first to say, lets go tampa! they've been waiting 10 years for this.
- billjimbob, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Mo seems to be getting younger....
- diggproof, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Don't you think Hughes will be a little worn out pitching every 2 to 3 days?
- haydesigner, on 09/02/2008, -1/+4And the reason *you* are commenting the "SPORTS" section of Digg... is...?
- slayerab, on 09/02/2008, -0/+32-0 and has played less than 50 games for the last couple years with a contract worth 40 million. I think he owes us yankee fans a lot more than two wins
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -7/+10***** the Yankees.
- Gloibin, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3O_o
Does this really need to be analyzed in this sort of depth at this point? As a devoted Yankee fan, this has been known since before the All Star break, and it was most apparent a few weeks ago when they fell more than 5 games back in the East/Wild Card.
It's like writing an article on why the Mariners are 'done'. - haydesigner, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Basic correlation.
- CaptainNoPants, on 09/02/2008, -0/+3Lol, sometimes? The Yanks have been in the playoffs every year since what, 95? It's just that this year isn't their year.
- CaptainNoPants, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3The Yanks are done because of the players, not the manager. Girardi had a team of no names playing great ball in Florida. It's not his fault that the highest payroll in baseball doesn't have chemistry. Add to that the fact that Joba has been injured, and you're not going to do well at all. With that being said, they are still only 6 or so games out of the wild card and stranger things have happened, read: 07 METS
- juicycutlets, on 09/02/2008, -2/+4Lets Go Mets! The power of Keith Hernandez's Stache!
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -1/+3umm yes it does. we did not see the yanks the 07 season and won a world championship.
the red sox are just fine. - nalen33, on 09/02/2008, -0/+2They would have been in during the '94 season too, probably won the WS that year if it wasn't for the strike. Damn labor union.
- darkdantae, on 09/02/2008, -2/+4The hating only shows how important the Yankees are, even when they are not doing good, it still makes good news, amazing.
