- twiztidsinz, on 03/28/2009, -3/+68I hear she throws like a girl.
- buddysystem, on 03/28/2009, -0/+25Judging from the article, she sounds like she's just a hair better at it than Leela.
- ousthouse, on 03/28/2009, -0/+23Better depth perception.
- redwolfwalker, on 03/27/2009, -2/+23Even if she doesn't make it big, her story should inspire a lot of young girls with interest in sports; here is another article on her showing video of her pitching, text and language is in Japanese
http://digg.com/baseball/Eri_Yoshida_first_female_ ... - shiftymh, on 03/28/2009, -2/+14You think there are Girl's locker rooms in professional baseball?
- toolboxnj, on 03/28/2009, -0/+11If there's going to be a woman in MLB it'll be a knuckleballer pitcher that can bring something different to the table. There's some real potential here.
- da233, on 03/28/2009, -1/+10Turanga Leela
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -3/+11I'd hit it (her knuckleball that is)
- Lkr721993, on 03/28/2009, -1/+9I always wondered why Little League Baseball and High Schools never encouraged women to play baseball, but softball instead. Softball is for old men, not women.
- bduddy, on 03/28/2009, -0/+7*insert joke about bases here*
- ileftfark, on 03/28/2009, -2/+9Are you a chick? No? Then no one ***** cares.
- shiftymh, on 03/28/2009, -5/+11This could be the greatest achievement for a female athlete I've ever seen.
On a lighter note, it's Japan. Her used underwear must be worth millions. - BigMiller, on 03/28/2009, -1/+7they being sold somewhere? link me.
- iDoraemon, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5If she's the first female pitcher in Japanese baseball history, does that mean that they had female baseball players before?
- wondertwins, on 03/28/2009, -2/+7its called girls locker room
- wondertwins, on 03/28/2009, -0/+5I hope she makes it in the big league
- ByteGuerilla, on 03/28/2009, -0/+4Ah, Wade Boggs. Goes down smooth.
- Terasiel, on 03/28/2009, -0/+4She's a 5 foot tall girl and already 114lbs? That girl probably has some serious muscle on her. I sure as hell wouldn't bet on her being weak or slower than all of her male competitors.
- UNDERSTAR, on 03/28/2009, -0/+3Can't wait for the anime adaption to come out.
- j.carcinogen, on 03/28/2009, -1/+4Grats, Eri.
- rsbryswrrl, on 03/28/2009, -0/+3This chick is awesome - I wish her success!
- tool4life, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I'd hit it. Her fastball that is.
- MarkMech, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2This isn't a story of inspiration, it's a story of exploitation. They let her face 2 batters, one she walked and one she struck out. Then they pulled her from the game! In baseball you need to be on the mound for at least one out to be officially recorded as being in the game. So they got her in, got the publicity, and yanked her out. Maybe she'll be good in the future, but she's 17. Michelle Wie anyone?
- rsbryswrrl, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2I hate softball. I grew up playing baseball w/the guys in my neighborhood and when I got to middle school and wanted to play, of course they wouldn't let me play on the guys' baseball team, so I went out for the girls' softball team. It sucked. It's a totally different game, and really not very exciting to me. I quit before the beginning of the season, but it would have been awesome if the guys' team had been open to girls that could play at the same level.
- wampastompa, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2There's no CRYING in BASEBALL!!!
- ftwb, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2A female player would also likely lack Ichiro's speed in running the bases and his cannon-like arm. Have you seen the throws he makes home? Guy probably has the best arm of any outfielder in history.
Still, great story. I wish her success. - Red1000, on 03/29/2009, -0/+2Japanese minor league knuckleball reliever? I'm pretty sure that's below backup CFL punter on the sports scale.
- ftwb, on 03/28/2009, -0/+2I don't know why you're being dugg down, that was pretty good.
- codyhedge, on 03/28/2009, -1/+2That picture looks like a wax figure.
- vpshockwave, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1It's not a guy, but Major is a real good anime :D
- cubicledrone, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Sounds similar to Princess Nine's Ryo Hayakawa. The anime was released just before Yoshida started playing baseball. Hmmm...
- aviazn, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1This is cool. I remember when I was growing up, the first female pro pitcher in the US played for my hometown minor league team in Duluth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ila_Borders - dlinkwit27, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Yoshida walked the first batter on four straight pitches, then gave up a stolen base, but struck out the next batter swinging before being taken out, as her club picked up a 5-0 win over the Osaka Gold Villicanes in front of 11,592 at the Osaka Dome, according to AP.
Not much better - crossmr, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1playing pro in japan is the greatest achievement ever? How about the young lady who played in the NHL?
- Logrusmage, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1By nature of being female, she probably will be weaker. Absolute power is absolute power, no one gives a ***** if she's strong for her size. Especially when that size is damn tiny.
She's a KNUCKLEBALL pitcher. That's skill and finess (a ***** load of finesse), not strength or power. - nightfright, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1was totally going to digg you up but no you have to throw in a Dodgers suck. Having a Padre fan for a roommate is already more then enough for me.
- tobashadow, on 03/28/2009, -1/+2Booo
Look up Virnett 'Jackie' Mitchell
On April 2, 1931, world famous New York Yankees sluggers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig were struck out by a 17 year old female pitcher named Virnett 'Jackie' Mitchell in Chattanooga, TN. - spookyturtle, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1For a person with a medium frame, 103-115 is the healthy weight range, as far as I can tell. Really, that's not that heavy for her height, given she's an athlete.
- Stevanoski, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1I'll never forget the spring Little League started and I saw socks with little pink spheres at the pitching mound. It was the first year they allowed girls.
- QuestionProtect, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1Great to see Japan making waves.
- joecool834, on 03/30/2009, -0/+1good cartoon!
- GeekNurse, on 04/05/2009, -0/+1This is a publicity stunt. To provoke interest in a new independent league. This league is like AA ball in America.
- Vicious172, on 03/28/2009, -0/+1So shes good with her hands hmm?
- psycosulu, on 03/28/2009, -0/+0Princess Nine? It's like an anime version of League of their Own.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Princess_Nine - toolboxnj, on 03/28/2009, -3/+3A woman likely couldn't generate the bat speed to hit MLB fastballs on a consistent basis. Even Ichiro has bat speed and power.
- inactive, on 04/02/2009, -1/+1I like this chick better.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4C6v5rqYB2k - Japan1, on 03/28/2009, -1/+1Japan rocks I tell you http://www.okinawahdr.com
- gkiltz, on 03/28/2009, -1/+0There are so few young people in Japan now! Their birthrate is one of the lowest in the world!
They have no choice but to take a good arm anywhere they can find it!
Rather than look to North America for pitchers, they have chosen this route! - DulcetTone, on 03/28/2009, -1/+0I can-- anime sucks
