- Snokage, on 05/31/2008, -17/+106freak accident? while it sucks this happened to her. the whole game shouldn't change based on this *****.
pitchers getting hit from the baseballs is a more common thing and yet there still isn't anything there to protect them? - inactive, on 05/31/2008, -12/+93Someone has to say it... she fits the exact profile of someone who'd be paying zero attention to the game at a ballgame. "wasn’t much of a baseball fan", "works in marketing and lives in the Los Angeles suburb of Sherman Oaks" then she didn't like the city ER and demanded to be taken to a more suburban one. Not that anyone deserves to have their jaw broken at a baseball game, but still... this doesn't seem to happen as much to the die-hard fans, even though they're at way more games.
- jlee2081, on 06/01/2008, -1/+50This guy concurs...
http://tinyurl.com/6d5cyv - Bukowsky, on 05/31/2008, -5/+51A few weeks back at Minute Maid Park in Houston, some guy about 10 rows ahead of me got hit in the head with a line-drive foul ball. It split his forehead open and he was bleeding everywhere. First Aid took him away for examination.
It's unfortunate, but that kind of stuff happens at a sporting event. Sometimes the ball goes into the stands, and at that point, it's the responsibility of the fan to be aware of what's going on in order to protect themselves from harm. - inactive, on 05/31/2008, -3/+48Players like maple because it's more dangerous.
- choopie911, on 05/31/2008, -1/+39Thanks for the print link, real useful.

- juniorb, on 06/01/2008, -6/+29My ex girlfriend got smacked in the head with a hockey puck at a Rangers game about 10 years ago. It changed her personality and turned her into a sex maniac. She's probably out there somewhere, right now, ***** her way through the entire Eastern Seaboard.
- consonance, on 06/01/2008, -0/+21Still bitter that she broke up with you?
- skinrock, on 05/31/2008, -1/+22There was a problem printing. No printer could be found.

- EruditeGoof, on 06/01/2008, -0/+18"There is a reason every team announces before the game that teams are not responsible for flying bats and balls. The same is printed on tickets. Around Dodger Stadium, signs are posted: “Please be alert to bats and balls entering the seating area.” There’s a Spanish translation, too."

- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -2/+17Foul balls fly into the stands all the time, bats breaks and fly around. Anyone who follows baseball in any sort of sense, knows this and knows there's a danger when sitting in the lower stands, especially along the first and third base line. If you're in those seats, you have to be aware of what's going on.
What happened to her is unfortunate, but changing the rules of the game over something that happens once in how many at bats? - VicHislop, on 06/01/2008, -1/+16Well, to be fair, the increasing use of maple bats has shown that they have different properties than the traditionally used ash bats. Ash bats tend to crack or break in two, while maple bats tend to sort of explode leaving shrapnel of wood to fly out into the field. It really is an issue of the tools being used to play the game. Aside from that, the performance improvements from ash to maple have been studied and seen to be negligible at best. (If I can find the study, I'll post it below.) The usage of maple for bats really is the issue here.
- kakwakas, on 06/01/2008, -1/+15Dude, we're talking about having the leagues disallow bats made from a certain wood that's known to do this kind of thing, not about the government taking our guns. Man, you people blow things out of proportion far too fast...
- zspeed78, on 05/31/2008, -11/+25A pitched understands the risks.. hes a professional in his genre. Someone that went to a baseball game might not have know they could be killed, brones broken, or disfigured from it. Im very sure that if my mom got free tickets to a baseball game, she would go, and have no clue something like that happens.
- Shatneresque, on 06/01/2008, -1/+14Or the next time LA plays Sac, Ron Artest will run into the stands and punch her.
- sliderocity, on 06/01/2008, -2/+15I didn't know two small jaw fractures equates to her jaw being "shattered". Embellishment ftw!
- fety, on 06/01/2008, -0/+14dude!! Way to sit there and take it like a man!!!
ouch! - Pandalume, on 06/01/2008, -1/+14It looks like submitter linked to the printable version (to save everyone from viewing a lot of ads and other nonsense). Yahoo decided that if we are viewing the printable version then we surely must want to print the document so they have some auto-print function firing onload.
- Snokage, on 05/31/2008, -1/+13the players don't own the ballpark. so why would they pay? yeah they work there. but where i work if someone gets hurt i don't pay for their bills, my employer does.
- juniorb, on 06/01/2008, -0/+11"Please tell me how that is NOT as fun as I think it is."
Imagine:
It's Sunday. You're furiously trying to complete a design project that's due on Monday. You've already ***** four times today and it's noon. Yesterday you had sex seven times, the day before five times, before that eight times. Your balls have crawled up into your abdomen for safety, and she's on the couch crying, because if you don't stick your aching and frightened penis in her RIGHT NOW she swears she's going to have an anxiety attack. When you refuse again and again, finally screaming, "Why don't you just go ***** a neighbor and let me work, dammit!", she gets up, smacks you across the face, and begins slamming doors, yelling that she can't help it, and she wishes she was dead. If that sounds like fun to you, you haven't gotten any in awhile. - BitKid, on 06/01/2008, -1/+13the dude in the top right is just sitting there all chill like "haha, guy got pwned by a bat...l0lz"
- inactive, on 05/31/2008, -5/+16Now that is some bad luck!
- juniorb, on 06/01/2008, -0/+10That little kid is like, "Why God... WHY??!!!"
- Velirno, on 06/01/2008, -0/+9I did appreciate having a no-nonsense copy to read.
- Kurto2021, on 06/01/2008, -5/+14once she gets healed we should have Todd Helton smack her in the face with a bat made of ash...then a few months later we can ask her which one hits harder.
- nebbo, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8It is called assumption of the risk. When you got to a sporting event you know or should know that the balls, equipment, or players themselves can leave the field of play. By going on to the premises you accept that these events can happen and waive liability.
Would it be good publicity for the club to pay for some of the medical bills? Sure, but then everyone would expect it from then on out.
Additionally, it is usually the city or county that owns the ballpark and they rent it out to the sports franchises. The city and county get out of it through governmental immunity yay!
If you don't like the rules don't support the baseball team by purchasing tickets or merchandise, also let them know of your complaint instead of venting on digg thread. Additionally, vote against propositions that would have the city/county/state build stadiums/arenas at tax payer expense. - HappyScrappy, on 05/31/2008, -3/+11***** happens.
Sometimes it isn't the fault of the bat. It isn't the fault of the player. It isn't the fault of the team, the league or anything. Sometimes things just happen.
They don't need to change baseball just because a person got hit.
And as to her question as to will someone get killed by something like this. Well, the answer is yet. Assuming baseball is played a long enough eventually someone will get killed because of what happens on the field. If it hasn't happened already. - fety, on 06/01/2008, -4/+11MILF!! MILF!! MILF!! MILF!!.....
- BitKid, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7The article says there are signs everywhere and even wording on the ticket warning fans to watch out for flying balls or bats, both in English and Spanish.
- FunkyNuts, on 06/01/2008, -2/+9Come on, guys...."change the whole game"? I hardly think removing a dangerous piece of equipment is "whole game" changing move. She's not asking that bats no longer be used. She's asking that netting be extended and that MAPLE no longer be used.
They put shielding all the way around a hockey rink. Why would netting extending down the base lines be any more of an egregious demand?
I don't go to baseball games very often, if at all. In fact, I can count on one hand how many I've attended in my life time. I would expect to get hit if I were behind home plate (although there is netting there). I would not, however, consider it a reasonable expectation that I would be hit with a flying chunk of bat near first base. Ball? Maybe. Bat? No.
Personally, I think putting a "you assume all risk" sign doesn't (and shouldn't) relieve you of the responsibility to employ protective measures against injury toward the very people who pay the bills.
Disgraceful. If it were the Dodgers' owner's daughter who had her jaw broken by flying maple, I'm pretty sure there would be extended netting 24 hours later. Just a hunch. - roosterjm2k2, on 06/01/2008, -0/+7what the ***** are the chances of the bat line-driving right to one of the 2 people in that whole area who arent paying attention....
- juniorb, on 06/01/2008, -1/+7You've never dated someone with a legitimate sex addiction, have you? It's not as fun as you think it is.
- analogkid01, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6Oak's nice.
- MikeSD34, on 06/01/2008, -1/+7Most people don't go to baseball games to play dodge-bat. Most normal people watch to see where the ball goes, not whether or not they're going to get speared with a chunk of baseball bat.
- eeevildictator, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6A+ for reading comprehension!
- rockefeller2, on 06/01/2008, -1/+7I'd hit it....(no pun intended).
- Pake, on 06/01/2008, -0/+6"Please tell me how that is NOT as fun as I think it is."
When you find out there is now a line and it extends a few blocks. - BitKid, on 06/01/2008, -0/+5What if the bat comes flying through the screen and hits you? This is the age of HD you know.
