Epstein working on new contract for World Series MVP
sports.espn.go.com — Manager Terry Francona wants Mike Lowell to remain with Boston. So does re-signed pitcher Curt Schilling, who's used his personal blog to stump for the World Series MVP's return. The one ally Lowell needs in his corner is Theo Epstein. No worries there. Epstein is busy at the general managers' meetings in Orlando, Fla., trying to make it happen.

- pixelate, on 11/12/2007, -3/+1Trade for Miguel Cabrera instead. I love Lowell, but he played out of his mind this year, and it's unrealistic to expect that to happen again (let alone for an additional three years). I do think Fenway could extend his career, but Cabrera is going to be a top shelf guy for a very long time.
If they're not in the running for Cabrera... hells yeah resign Mike Lowell.- Rethcir, on 11/12/2007, -1/+4Cabrera's a fat load and not a clubhouse guy. no thanks

- 5urr3al5am, on 11/12/2007, -2/+20I admit that it might be a bit short sighted but I would much rather have Mike Lowell on the Sox than ARod any day!
- linkwray, on 11/12/2007, -1/+7Lowell = Class, Leadership, Winning
0-Rod = Selfishness, Slap-happiness, Losing

- zeroflake, on 11/12/2007, -20/+3WTF? who cares!!!
- HandsomeRuss, on 11/12/2007, -18/+3Who cares? Redsox fans prove once again their egos are just as big as their bandwagons.
- awtripp, on 11/12/2007, -1/+9What? Do you even listen to the words that come out of your mouth? There are bandwagon fans for just about every team. The Red Sox have pretty much been around since the dawn of baseball. My dad was a Red Sox fan, his dad was a Red Sox fan, etc.... Not everyone is a bandwagon fan just because a team happens to be winning you insensitive clod.
- banq59, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4This. If you grow up in Mass you are indoctrinated into Boston sports at a young age. You are a die hard. I've sat in Fenway park when they couldn't sell out a friday night game, and paid insane prices for games now that the fairweather fans are back. This is a big deal to Red Sox fans. Mike Lowell is a class act, and a great baseball player.

- Calculon, on 11/12/2007, -10/+2He should hire Mr. Kotter
- gordonp, on 11/12/2007, -2/+2Epstein must've had a note from his mother.

weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee- awtripp, on 11/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, it's sick how much some players **COUGH**AROD**COUGH** make, but the pay roll doesn't always determine the outcome **COUGH**YANKEES**COUGH**
- decruncher, on 11/12/2007, -4/+1$143,123,714 payroll FTW!!
- weside, on 11/12/2007, -6/+2I care.
- paulb0t, on 11/12/2007, -5/+2I care, but there really isn't much news here. Yes, the Red Sox are negotiating a contract with Lowell, as they have been doing since the World Series ended. This is akin to reporting "Alex Rodriquez seeks big contract from stupid GM!"
- halobender, on 11/12/2007, -6/+1I care because you do.
- boomshakalaka, on 11/12/2007, -4/+1What are the rest of the Sweathogs doing these days?
- jspegele, on 11/12/2007, -1/+10As a Yankees fan, I'm praying that Boston signs ARod. It would all but guarantee they never win another playoff series. He's a drain on any team he plays for. Cares more about how he looks on TV than winning.
- linkwray, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6It's the Curse of A-Rod...
No World Series appearances and nothing but four playoff beatdowns since he joined the yankees.
And the Red Sox have won 2 World Series! - banq59, on 11/08/2007, -0/+2I feel for Yankees fans. You could see the collapse coming when Steinbrenner kept shelling out big bucks for old past their prime players or for young players that do nothing but pad their own stats (A-Rod). A-rod was never a Yankee and is a cancer in any clubhouse he ends up.
The Dodgers are looking pretty good though!- jspegele, on 11/09/2007, -0/+1Collapse? Recession maybe, but not a collapse. They still won 5 straight AL East titles after their dynasty ended and they still have a streak of 18 straight playoff appearances. They still have a core group of vets and a lot of up and coming young talent. The Yankees are far from a collapse.
- linkwray, on 11/08/2007, -0/+6It's the Curse of A-Rod...
- ftgarcia, on 11/12/2007, -1/+6Lowell has been more clutch than a-rod will ever be in the post season. That is what baseball is about. Making it and winning the world series. Until he wakes up and stops being an October zombie A-rod is destined to be another Dan Marino. Great player, lots of records, no rings... little legacy.
- Rethcir, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5Mike Lowell also brings a lot of intangibles to the table. For instance, he speaks both English and Spanish fluently, making him a bit of a uniter for the Latin and non-Latin players. I think leadership qualities like this are well worth the premium price he will command. I sure hope the sox can bring him back but you have to wish Salt and Pepper Lowell luck wherever he winds up.
I think 4 years is reasonable too - DH him when the Papi era draws to a close - ronaldinho, on 11/12/2007, -1/+5Rethcir said we can DH Lowell when the Big Papi era closes, but the thing is that Lowell is even older than him, so that's probably not possible. Aside from that, I agree with Rethcir on the intangibles that Lowell brings. I don't think we even need to DH him really. And OK, he's no A-Rod, but Lowell does his job quietly and effectively, whereas A-Rod is a media circus, and I think it's bound to hurt a team somehow. This Sox team is already a media circus (the Boston media is crazy), and I think A-Rod is a distraction. Not worth the money. Re-sign Lowell!
- redlandmover, on 11/12/2007, -1/+3the quick and dirty of the story: arod = bad; lowell = good b/c leadership/intangibles/"cowboy up mentality"
- cheekybastard, on 11/12/2007, -3/+1Epstein has changed for the better, but what about Mr. Kotter? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BL1mcUYfe34
- wrongonce, on 11/12/2007, -0/+1You keep the things that make it a winning team -- ML and guys like him want to win as a team, and will put their hearts into the game.
The sox will do the right thing by him, and the rest of his team, by re-signing.
