- coyasun, on 08/13/2008, -2/+12This means that someone with cross-platform approach to their business profile will be best suited for the job. As well, someone who will be able to produce more income through marketing to cover tax burden. Or, someone who will be able to develop and execute an attractive alternative to the league (and the government) that would prove to be a satisfactory solution to the tax issue. We have an office change coming up in the White House and the new President may in fact be an Illinois boy; perhaps something can be worked out.
- jfdolier, on 08/13/2008, -0/+7It figures that a legitimate news story with depth and relevance would only get 5 comments on Digg...
- AmyVernon, on 08/13/2008, -0/+5Interesting. I hope it doesn't hold up the sale. The longer the team's future is in question, the more difficult it is to do what needs to be done to win.
- TheMarenum, on 08/13/2008, -2/+7You would need to move the Cubs way further than Mexico to get anyone to give ***** about the White Sox.
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -1/+5"The Chicago-based media company is proposing a tax-avoidance strategy that likely would require a buyer to borrow heavily to pay for the team."
First Harry Caray died, then the chicago tribune died. I don't know which hurt me the most. Now Sam Zell owns the tribune company... and they act like things are changing for different reasons than they are. Goobye cubbies and wrigley. Goodbye day games right when school lets out. It all happened before we knew you were gone. - dmourati, on 08/13/2008, -1/+4Slim shady.
- seanmx, on 08/13/2008, -2/+4very interesting....
- Shadow57, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2The Cubs have one of the best records in baseball this year. Wrigley sell out nearly every game. How much more competitive can you get?
- inactive, on 08/13/2008, -0/+2very insightful....
- mrshickadance9, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I would say they are in the top 5 or 6 most well known sports franchises in the united states.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1That's the most ridiculous comment I've ever read...why in the world would an "Illinois boy" care what the Cubs do or how they are sold over any other team in MLB if at all? I would imagine the new president (from whichever party) will have other things to be concerned with other than the Chicago Cubs....please.
- bcarl314, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1True, but Wrigley has one of the lowest seating capacities in all of MLB. And although they are totally rocking the NL right now, they've made the playoffs several times in the past decade only to choke.
Oh well, wait 'till next year. - SouthsideIrish, on 08/13/2008, -0/+1Never? What about now? They have the best record in the National League, are 25 games above 500, 3 games behind the Angels for the best record in baseball. That is not competitive? What kind of drugs are you taking?
- Barackalypse, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I was referring to their 99 year World Series win drought, and I expect them to fall apart before the big game this year, just like they did last year.
- mrshickadance9, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I'm a cubs fan, but i wouldn't exactly call 2 times in the last decade several.
I smell a white sox (or cardinals, or brewers) fan - mrshickadance9, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Like this year? because they look pretty damned good.
- hardcle, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I've got news for you. Obama's a White Sox fan. He's not doing anything to help the Cubs.
- SouthsideIrish, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1And look at the owners they have had? The Wrigley's and the Tribune company haven't exactly been the best owners, but with Lou Pinella they will at least make it to the NLCS, probably win that, and then they will likely get beat by LA, but you never know, since it is the World Series.
- inactive, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1And there is a matter of a bad luck goat to think about as well.
- hardcle, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1I guess I've underestimated the popularity of the Cubs. I can't believe that a dull business story like this made the front page.
- SouthsideIrish, on 08/14/2008, -0/+1Please move the team from Wrigley, please! Build a nice park in the suburbs and leave Wrigleyville because those jackasses don't want the team anymore. Just give me something that looks like Wrigley, but new, not what the Sox got stuck with, sort of like Cleveland's or Baltimore's park.
- osko2052, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1Tampa Bay is still in first place in the Red Sox division.
- Barackalypse, on 08/13/2008, -2/+2"has produced concern among prospective buyers about their ability to operate the Cubs in a competitive manner,"
I wouldn't worry, they've never operated in a competitive manner, at least this might give them a good excuse. - rugas, on 08/14/2008, -0/+0The only way this could end well is if Mark Cuban buys the Cubs. He's already a fan and friend of some of the players. He is smart and would know not to move them from Wrigley. He would also be willing to invest the kind of money the Cubs need to keep the momentum that they have this year. So that after winning that World Series, 100 years after their last, they can keep it up and contend every year after that until I die. GO CUBS GO!!!
- osko2052, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1diggproof, what are you smoking? The white sox and red sox were 2-2 in their last series.
- osko2052, on 08/14/2008, -1/+1Wrigley Field, the world's largest gay bar.
- diggproof, on 08/14/2008, -2/+1LOL White Sox, an easy 4 game sweep for the Real Sox, umm I mean Red Sox.
- Ryan166, on 08/13/2008, -7/+4they should worry more about winning a championship within the next 100 years.
- osko2052, on 08/13/2008, -7/+2How about we move the Cubs to Mexico so the White Sox 2005 World Champions will get some well deserved respect?
- tbrand86, on 08/13/2008, -7/+1The Tribune has always been corrupt...
F*ck the Cubs.
