- Trifold, on 01/12/2009, -3/+22About freakin' time Rice got the call.
- mediablitz, on 01/12/2009, -1/+15Ricky says that Ricky is happy for Ricky...
- FreddieD, on 01/12/2009, -0/+10The 5.2% of the baseball writers who did not vote for Ricky Henderson need their voting privileges rescinded. The concept of not voting for someone in their first year of eligibility even if they are almost unanimously considered the best leadoff man of all time makes the BCS look like the perfect solution to college football.
- jaxontyler, on 01/12/2009, -6/+16I said it twice and I'll say it again.
Pete Rose.
Hall of Fame has no credibility as long as he is left out. - thewhits, on 01/12/2009, -0/+10If you're a Rickey fan, this is a must read.
http://www.faniq.com/blog/The-25-Best-Rickey-Hende ... - patsbaseball11, on 01/12/2009, -0/+9Rickey was one of the premier leadoff men that this game will ever see. Nobody hit more leadoff home runs, or stole more bases than Rickey. And who could ever forget, when he hit the homerun that gave him the lead in All Time Runs Scored, how he cleared his team out and DOVE HEAD FIRST into home plate! On a jack, the guy gets dirty. Awesome ballplayer.
- Anubis2051, on 01/12/2009, -0/+7you clearly have no taste in sports. thats just what people with ADD say because they can't sit still for five minutes at a time. sit back and watch a game, it can be quite entertaining.
- mediablitz, on 01/12/2009, -1/+8Can't possibly bore you more than your comments bore us.
- S7aind, on 01/13/2009, -0/+7Then why comment on the story?
- Tegurit34, on 01/12/2009, -1/+7Tim Raines was a top 5 player for half a decade (deserved the NL MVP in both 1986 and 1987), a top 10 for most of the decade and finished with career numbers better than HALF of the players enshrined in the Hall.
Rickey Henderson is in the top 10 players in baseball history. Raines is 80 percent of Rickey and only 22.6% voted for him. Why? Because of stupid, round, arbitrary numbers (same reason Blyleven is getting boned).
What. The. *****. - Stomper622, on 01/12/2009, -0/+6Only fault...he played for he Expos.
- Ryan_KW, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6He was still playing. They have to be retired for 5 years before they appear on the ballot.
- Ftown13, on 01/13/2009, -0/+6A sport requires you to get off your fat ass and do something physical. Poker is more of a "game" than anything
- FreddieD, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5This one made me laugh out loud..
13) San Diego GM Kevin Towers was trying to contact Rickey at a nearby hotel. He knew Henderson always used fake names to avoid the press, fans, etc. He was trying to think like Rickey and after several attempts; he was able to get Henderson on the phone.
Rickey had checked in under Richard Pryor. - Tegurit34, on 01/13/2009, -0/+5I think what he's trying to say is that a BBWAA writer -- someone looked at as among the best sports writers in the industry -- looking at Rickey's credentials and then saying "Well everyone else is doing it so I won't," is a really stupid ***** idea.
- shakabrah, on 01/12/2009, -0/+5No, it's January. But they will play again in March.
- Snowdrake, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Well kids that is what happens when you gamble on the game. I mean tough ***** that is what happens pretty much the same thing happened with Shoeless Joe Jackson with the 1919 World Series and he wont be getting in anytime soon either.
- seandfeeney, on 01/12/2009, -3/+7dugg for Rice, about damn time....
- impei, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Nobody has ever been voted in unanimously. He got a higher percentage of votes than Willie Mays or Ted Williams and the 13th highest percentage ever.
- Anubis2051, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Congrats Ricky, now if only we could get Donnie Baseball in...Huge oversight as far as I'm concerned.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4I find it pretty stupid that lesser hall of famers need to wait several years before the writers come around and vote for them.
- Stomper622, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Thanks, great stuff here.
- vat0r, on 01/12/2009, -0/+4Sweet, I have like five Ricky Henderson cards.
- Tegurit34, on 01/13/2009, -0/+4You're right. Ted Williams sure did suck at baseball.
- HappyScrappy, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5He can't be voted in as long as he is banned from baseball. Why does the shame fall to the hall of fame instead of the commissioner who banned him?
- mediablitz, on 01/12/2009, -1/+5I came here to say that. Long overdue.
- Tnugz, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Seriously.
- pamon, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Ricky is Ricky.. glad he got in...
Rice though? Appreciate his efforts and a great player, but a hall of famer? He was a great player but HOF material? - inactive, on 01/12/2009, -1/+4My friends laughed at me when I told them I want to become a male nurse if business and writing don't work out for me. What's so funny about being a male nurse?
- armynixon, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3For all of the faults of the baseball Hall of Fame, it is still the best of the major sports. Ricky Henderson and Jim Rice are both worthy selections.
- Tegurit34, on 01/12/2009, -2/+5Even if he does get in there are reasons to believe the Hall doesn't have credibility.
- Stomper622, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3I guess I'm old, but it's cool to now see players getting in the HOF that I grew up watching as a kid. Especially Ricky, as I grew up in the Bay Area.
Congrats to both. - Tegurit34, on 01/12/2009, -0/+3Dugg even though I disagree because I think this could be a good discussion.
Mattingly is one of those guys that's destined for the Hall of Very, Very Good. His peak was the greatest hitter in the game, but it was only for 4 years and then he was a league average player from 1988 until his retirement after 1995.
If you look at his top 3 most similar batters (http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/sp.cgi?I=ma ... they're not Hall of Famers. There are two in the top 10 (Puckett and Bottomley), but the rest of the 8 are either not Hall worthy at all or right about on par with Mattingly. - Ryan_KW, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Sounds like you are a fan of a team and not the sport ***cough*** Skankees fan... No team or player is above the game. Ever. So when a great player is inducted into the Hall of Fame, and you say Booo, say boo to yourself first. Give respect where respect is due, no matter what hat that person wore as a player.
- diggproof, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3I don't believe it, it's Jim Rice! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAUU-bC4yOg
- larkins1, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Exactly! Why would you even click on a story with baseball in the title, if you don't care for any sport, other than hockey?
- hawksfan03, on 01/13/2009, -1/+4yes, betting on yourself to win is such a vile act. maybe they should just hang him.
/s - isolino, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Rickey is my all time favorite player. He's the best all around player I've ever seen. Congrats.
- inactive, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3FYI:
Rickey Henderson played for the Boston Red Sox. - Moonkeeper, on 01/13/2009, -0/+3Its about time Jim Rice got in there. He had an amazing career and some unbelievable seasons in his prime.
- JakePM, on 01/14/2009, -0/+2My bro caught a Jim Rice home run ball just above the Red Sox dugout - my most memorable baseball moment as a kid. VERY glad to see this, Rice was one of the best.
- Tegurit34, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2The word "defensively" goes without saying when you're talking about Keith Hernandez, dude.
- Tegurit34, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Rickey better do his induction speech in the 3rd person.
- coreydoucorey, on 02/11/2009, -0/+2Amazing. Rubbish. I'd better go and drink some vodka http://manxl.org
- Shabadoo, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Why Rickey Henderson is awesome:
http://www.faniq.com/blog/The-25-Best-Rickey-Hende ... - jaxontyler, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Well as a life long Red Legs fan its my sworn duty to say Pete Rose everytime I hear the words hall of fame. Not to take anything away from these two guys...whoever they were ;;;)
- Tegurit34, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2The two things most conducive to run scoring are 1) hitting home runs and 2) not creating outs. Mattingly was better at the former in his peak, Hernandez was much better at the latter for a decade. In fact, their offensive peaks were very similar when compared to offensive league average (Hernandez's peak was in more offensive suppressed seasons).
And for the record neither one should go in if it was up to me.
"And singles hitting first basemen don't make the Hall of Fame."
George Sisler, 1939. - krahzee, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Mattingly doesn't deserve to go in before Keith Hernandez.
They are damn near identical in every category. And while Mattingly had a 60 more homeruns in his career, he played at Yankee Stadium, a bandbox compared to Shea. Defensively both were excellent, but Hernandez is the one people cite as having changed the way 1st Base is played.
They both deserve to be there. Justice would be them going in together. - gleongelpi, on 01/13/2009, -1/+3Some years from now most base-ball fans will not know who Jim Rice was He will be a footnote. Most will only know about him when they see his name in some list. Meantime practically every fan will have knowledge of Rose, McGwire, Sosa and others who most likely will never be inducted. That's is the real Hall of Fame: the one that includes the players that the kids will look up to see what they did. The Rose and McGwire rookie cards will sell for more than a thousand dollars while the cards of Rice and many others will sell for no more than a few dollars. The eral Hall of Fame will live in the fans; not in that politically correct building paid for by a selected group of people who want to shape the game to fit some ideals of how society should be. I will never visit that place which I will refuse to mention just like they refuse to mention certain great players.
- Tegurit34, on 01/13/2009, -0/+2Read more carefully because we're in agreement. Numbers are great. Round, arbitrary ones like "500 HOME RUNS!" or "3000 HITS!," while great accomplishments, should never bar someone from the Hall. Numbers are what prove Tim Raines is right in the middle of the pack of Hall of Fame position players (see Hardball Times link above) even though he didn't get the stupid "magic" numbers.
Hence the coined term used above "Blyleven'd." -
