- rogerly, on 09/05/2008, -1/+80"It was confirmed by frame-by-frame television reviews that Lopez did, in fact, throw four balls and Rodriguez should have taken his free pass."
Frame-by-frame, huh? Methinks it could have been confirmed replaying things all full-speed. Hell, dropping every other frame would probably show the same thing. - rivalius13, on 09/05/2008, -4/+77Dugg for [non-onion story]

- tj241, on 09/05/2008, -1/+29Umpires are there to catch the mistakes....not the players
- Rizzler, on 09/05/2008, -1/+19mlb.mlb.com - That's an interesting URL...
- SkippyDoorknob, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17You can see here that the next pitch went back and to the left. Back... and to the left. Back... and to the left.

- paulieslim, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6this is just the start of the POST steroid baseball aera. Mark Mcgwire never struckout on a 4&2 pitch

Are the umpires getting this bad? - ithejosh, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Well done sir.
- branjb, on 09/06/2008, -0/+5How is it even possible to miscount a pitch? Doesn't the batter realize what the count is? Do they honest to god just go up there and swing till they hit the ball or the ump tells them they're done? wtf.
- Soave, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Hahaha that was the comment I came here to make.
Of course, it's just fancy tech talk to make it sound more impressive. - legendxx, on 09/05/2008, -0/+5Someone was picked last on the playground...
- Soave, on 09/05/2008, -0/+4It's saying the count was 3-2. The next pitch was a ball (I don't know how much you know about baseball, but you walk after 4 balls), but the count remained at 3-2, instead of 4-2, ie. a walk. So the pitcher pitched again, and this time was a strike, so he struck out. One of the pitches didn't get counted.
- bstew22, on 09/05/2008, -1/+5the umpire actually asked the BATTER what the count was! lol. umm.. its 3-0 sir! i swear! i swear!
- troyfoley, on 09/05/2008, -3/+7There's a ball self-examination joke there somewhere, but I can't find it.

- codyman, on 09/05/2008, -1/+4Being a lifetime long Angel's fan (I live a mile from the stadium...), I am not ticked off by this really as the Angels in the end did win the game.... by a lot... if this was playoff territory and/or mattered more, then I would care... but whatever
- awesometastic1, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3it's because every other url is for instance seattle.mariners.mlb.com, so the mlb official site is thus mlb.mlb.com
- SkippyDoorknob, on 09/05/2008, -0/+3If there were 4 balls, he should have gotten a walk right then. There should not have been another pitch after that.
- dfwcharlie, on 09/05/2008, -2/+5*****... you would know if you took 4 balls.
- dfwcharlie, on 09/05/2008, -2/+4***** the angels.
- anarcurt, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Even the commentators missed it until way after. Unbelievable.
- Gutterpunk, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Hopefully he reads all the threads in full so he can see your advices...
Next time try the "reply" button ;) - cheezintern, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2I used to umpire, it happens occasionally and it's not usually a big deal since there's usually someone that's keeping count....Although major league umpires get paid a pretty decent salary, so it shouldn't be happening to them.
- Gutterpunk, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2How old is that joke? It seems to be older than sense of humor...
- chickenloco, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2Instant replay is not used on these types of calls - just fair or foul, home run or no home run.
It is the umps responsibility to know that count, as well as the players/coaches to make sure the ump doesn't screw up. - docbron, on 09/05/2008, -0/+2oh I see what you did there...
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -1/+3Old 4 balls joke:

"He got 4 balls. He gets to walk"

- spookycheddar, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1Yeah im mostly just waiting for fly balls. the ground balls are just an added bonus.
- ithejosh, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2I don't get it. Can someone that actually watches baseball explain this to me? Is it just saying that he should have walked instead of struck out.
Why is it such a big deal if they won the game... - awesometastic1, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1it could be www.seattlemariners.com (mlb owns that and the team domains for all the baseball teams), but for some reason they decided to use the other convention instead. If you go to any of the team name domains it just redirects to the appropriate mlb.com sub-domain.
Probably so that they could have their domain be ranked higher world wide and sell it to advertisers such that "we are 100th most popular site on the web". Where-as if they split it up to each domain that would diminish that quite a bit. - worldchanger, on 09/05/2008, -1/+2so much for video replay.
- godspeed843, on 09/05/2008, -3/+4Thats how boring baseball is, not even the players are paying attention to whats going on.
- Gutterpunk, on 09/05/2008, -0/+1it could be www.mlb.com
Especially seeing as www.mlb.com redirect to mlb.mlb.com - inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+3There's a reason they instituted replay on homers, and it isn't because the umpires are so sharp...
- Jerky1312, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1If you notice in that case and the case in this submission, the counts go full and in between those pitches, there are foul balls and foul tips. I'm assuming that is the primary reason it throws off the umpires, who get accustomed to repeating the full count after a foul ball. It's not an excuse, because such mistakes shouldn't be made, but its probably a factor in why they get confused. Also, it looks like the announcers, managers, batters are completely relying on the umpires for the count, as in both cases, the umps mistakes wasn't noticed, as everyone was assuming he's always correct.
- KaJuN4, on 09/06/2008, -0/+1Baseball games already drag on for far too long without having to stop to review replays.
