- DrunkenSavior, on 11/05/2008, -0/+30Amazing Career. Well done, Mad Dog.
- Dested, on 11/05/2008, -2/+29Thank god, I thought this was an article about Maddox. I was worried for a sec.
- xOKxWhy, on 11/05/2008, -0/+24Easy lock for the HoF
- DarkBlueAnt, on 11/05/2008, -5/+23*Phew*
I thought it said Maddox was going to retire. - awesometastic1, on 11/05/2008, -0/+16I'm personally a little sad he didn't try to stick around for 400. I mean Moyer's still going strong at 46. 4 to 5 years from now Maddux may well have had a shot at 400 if he kept it up. His style relying on finesse more than anything makes it seem like he could do what Moyer is doing. I mean maddux is only 42. Ah well. Nice career anyways. I'm glad he passed Clemens before he chose to hang it up.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/05/2008, -6/+18I can't be the only one who thought this said Maddox.
- Bukowsky, on 11/05/2008, -0/+12what a career! Easily one of the best pitchers to ever play in the MLB.
- redscofield, on 11/05/2008, -0/+10He had a brilliant career... The smartest pitcher i've ever seen throw a ball..
- morninglorii, on 11/05/2008, -0/+9Since the beginning of 2006, he's made a total of 11 posts, or an average of less than 1 every 3 months. Since this time last year, he's made 2 posts (including April Fool's). He's basically already retired in my eyes.
- credential101, on 11/05/2008, -1/+10Why the hell does everyone think its "Maddox" when there is clearly a photo of a baseball player next to the title on the main page?
- flowingsphere, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7Greg Maddux could arguably be the best pitcher ever.
The guy was simply amazing during an age of steroids, HGH and God knows how many other performance enhancing drugs. He was able to throw at an amazing level for more years then any pitcher I've ever seen. His control was probably the best ever. 16 walks one season.. incredible.
I think based on how he was so dominate with amazing control and pitch variety, he goes right to the top of my list. It doesn't help that the Rocket cheated and Pedro was only amazing for a much shorter period of time. He really deserves a big send off once this becomes official. - jermo, on 11/05/2008, -0/+7He needs 45 more wins, so even in 4 to 5 years it's no guarantee. He's still a solid pitcher but he's not as dominant as he once was, and isn't going to win a heck of a lot of games if he's not on teams that can support him.
Beyond that, even 4 to 5 years is a long time to hang around just to reach a milestone.
Better to go out closer to the top of his game than slowly fade away for several more years just to try to reach a nice career milestone. - HookmasterCH47, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6The Mad Dog is an inspiration to all those that aren't god gifted athletes. Hard work and a focus on the fundamentals got him to where he is today. Way to go Greg!
- cptshamrock, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6My favorite pitcher ever. And one of my favorite Cubs.
- bryantee, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5You hated Maddux when he was a Brave?
Well done, Greg. And while I'm at at - ***** you, Boras. - alperea, on 11/05/2008, -0/+5Me too. He hasn't updated in awhile.
- connieLingus, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4statistically one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
- cle2105, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4I hope he doesn't pull a Favre and go to the Mets in 6 months. He's a great pitcher though; I loved watching him on the Braves when I was a kid.
- hermizzle, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Stand up guy. Never afraid to help young guys out. Sad to see him go but he will be in the HoF before too long and hopefully a pitching coach somewhere. Loved that 2-seam fastball to lefties. Made them look foolish.
- hawksfan03, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4There has never been a smarter person in baseball history. He was talented pitcher, yes, but was far from one of the most talented, he did more with less than anyone in MLB history. One of my favorite players of all time. Thank you for '95 Greg.
- A Braves Fan - hawksfan03, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4Chicks dig the long ball
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ltD21rYWVw - mattingly, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4All those wins and he did it clean too. He surpasses Clemens as the best pitcher of our era since he didn't need steroids to accomplish it.
- Temo1, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4This guy is the reason I started watching baseball. Best pitcher of his generation, and I'll take no arguements on that matter. That includes Pedro, by the way. Pedro might have had a bigger peak, but Maddux had the better career.
Also, no one was more fun to watch than the Mad Dog.
Edit: Although realistically, I think I'd stack Maddux's '94 and '95 seasons against the best Pedro has done, easily. So scratch that as well. - hawksfan03, on 11/05/2008, -0/+4If Glavine and Smoltz retire also, (please don't smoltzie, we need you next year), 3 of the best pitchers of the last 20 years can go in to Cooperstown together.
- thegreenspanput, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3"He makes it lokk as it guys are swinging at the ball with foam bats" - John Smoltz.
- jba68, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Agreed, statistics are a sidebar to what was done on the field. he was a Great pictcher, and will be in the hall of fame.
400 is a round number, but its just a number. - uninspireded, on 11/05/2008, -1/+4You weren't. :D
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3That's exactly how he should be remembered. One of the smartest pitchers ever.
- gaapgod, on 11/05/2008, -0/+3Greg, as a Braves Fan you will always be in our sports memories. Thanks.
- inactive, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2What was telling for me was how he reached 300 wins, verses how Clemens did. Clemens had a special little patch on his uniform for the game (that the umps made him remove), he gave endless interviews and made sure everyone knew he was going for his 300th win (it took him several tries), he had all kinds of celebrations and fireworks, and demanded to be the guest *manager* of the team in honor of his 300th win. Maddux? No special treatment, and his main quote about it was that it was just another game, his concern was not getting 300 wins but helping his team make the playoffs that season. An incredibly classy guy in an era where it's becoming increasingly rare.
A lot of guys are said to be first ballot HOFers, Maddux is pretty much the only guy today who's guaranteed to be... because he has the stats and he got them the right way. - serif69, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2I honestly did not know he was still pitching. Good for him. Always was a stand-up guy, and a hall-of-fame caliber pitcher. His longevity only adds to that. I was never a fan of any team he pitched for, but I always admired and respected him. Good luck in retirement, Mad Dog.
- hawksfan03, on 11/06/2008, -0/+2Not to mention anyone who would suggest Maddux even looked at steroids would be an idiot because he was not a big guy at all
- Ljay90, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2He's been in baseball since I was born. Well done, good sir.
- senae, on 11/05/2008, -1/+3I did as well. I audibly gasped.
- vertigo32, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2Same here. Although, as far as I can tell, he has already....it's pretty sad when he goes six months without a single post.
- theonlybradever, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2agreed, when they played together, that braves rotation was crazy.
- eavesdrop, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2I hated him when he was in Braves uniform but I had to respect he was a BAMF.
- MakanGuru, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2wow Maddux is still playing?
By far one of the most accurate and efficient pitchers EVER in baseball. Watching him pitch was like watching a master artiste at work. - dwninjungleland, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1BADDOX
- jetblackz4, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1He got a standing ovation last time he was at Wrigley even though he was not playing on the Cubs. That is rare and even more rare is such a class act and all around great person. I know we will see him coaching in the near future.
- froston, on 11/05/2008, -6/+7i thought you meant MADDOX... Owner of the Best Page in the Universe.
- eavesdrop, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Yeah I'm a dodger fan. It was my duty to hate Maddux, but everyone feared when he was on the mound, respect.
- Bravesguy18, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Let's be honest. He'll be buried in his Braves uniform assuming he doesn't live to witness the decade-long slump in Braves baseball I'm anticipating. There I went and upset myself. I'm a sad panda.
- nightsweat, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1I wish he'd been a Cub his whole career, but I understand actually wanting to win something. We'll miss you Greg, come back and coach for us.
- SharkPuncher, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Beat me to it, damn you!
dugg up anyway - hansolo, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Not anymore
- ratatek, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Maybe Maddox should retire too. There doesn't seem to be much fire left in him.
- WilliamDecker, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1Greg Maddox is planning a revamp of the best page in the universe!
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1Fair enough. I didn't mean my comment in an *****-ish way. I just honestly haven't watched a baseball game since they had their strike so many years back. When that happened, my interest level dropped.
I guess I take that back, I watched the game where the Red Sox won the series for the first time in however long. - gkiltz, on 11/06/2008, -0/+1It was time TWO YEARS AGO!
Certainly a Hall of Famer! With any luck at all, on the first year of eligibility! -
