50 Highest Paid Athletes
sportsillustrated.cnn.com — See any patterns? I noticed that the NY Yankees had a few contributions. It is interesting which sports shell out the big bucks!!! Enjoy!

- screamthenrun, on 10/11/2007, -11/+49"I noticed that the NY Yankees had a few contributions"-- I noticed that the Yankees are in second to last place in their division!
- sinurgy, on 10/11/2007, -19/+7Wow does this list reaffirm my disgust for marketing/advertising in America today. It's ***** disgusting!!!!
- flernk, on 10/11/2007, -12/+6Nike should sponsor P.E. teachers and high school coaches.
- screamthenrun, on 10/11/2007, -26/+6@flernk: Nike should sponsor soldiers-- people that are willing to die for us are worth more to me than any athlete (not that some teachers and coaches arent deserving)
- sfpfc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Stephon/Francis and the Knicks may not be ranked number one or attending the playoffs, but at least they brag about having the highest payroll. I can almost hear them now chanting we're number one we're number one

Oh great, a war reference on a sports news story - DuhStupid, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Classiest person of them all is #26.
"Starbury knows how to give back: In addition to his $15 line of sneakers, his $1 million donation to Katrina relief efforts was one of biggest by an athlete." - SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6WTF is this?
Obviously youre not a golfer.
/the Dude - HarryHunt, on 10/11/2007, -6/+0"An uknown fact about tiger woods, had to get laser eye surgery as he has -7 bad vision and he hated contacts"
Lots of people have bad eyes and nobody's paying THEM $111,941,827.
And funny that the "athlete" who probably does the least actual movement makes the most money. Looks like sports actually reflects the real world. - coljung, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Actually, the title should be:
50 Highest Paid Athletes in USA.
Although Tiger Woods is in fact the highest paid athlete in the world, the second one is Michale Shumacher, and after that i'm sure there's even a few soccer players, including beckham, with his recent contract for the MLS.
But hey, 100.000.000 !!!!!, respect for tiger. - realgoat21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9SI's list of the "International 20": The top 20 non-American earners
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/2007/index.20.html - MrStylz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Schumie retired last year, so he's not an athlete anymore. Schumie had, for a long time, been the highest paid athlete in pure salary - around $50 million. Alonso has taken top spot for now - the move to McLaren will help him out even more.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@HarryHunt: Roger Clemens "moves" more than tiger woods during a game? Hah.
- intense321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2True Story:
I'm in JFK International Airport and I was just sitting at a bar with a professional basketball player on one side of me, and an investment banker on the other side. The investment banker asked the basketball player how much he made each year. His response, "oh, about $11 million". The investment banker just laughed and said, "Yeah, I often wonder how you guys survive on so little."
And now I get to sit in the kiosk with wi-fi access and write about it :) It just goes to show.. It's all relative... - bariswheel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1More like highest paid athletes, in the US and A. Include the rest of the world next time US and A.
Lots of soccer players making a lot more than those players on the list. There are $25M/yr female tennis players out there as well. I'll leave the burden of research on you guys. - lolcat77, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Garnett takes 21 of Minnesota's 53 million team salary cap. Damn.
- mad23dog, on 10/11/2007, -20/+10It's funny how Tiger Woods is at 111 million, when the highest person internationally is only 35 million... We spend so much money on Athletes here in the states... too much...I mean the president only gets paid what, 400k?
- dragonlink2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+32well for this president, i find that way too much. an athlete like tiger woods (never involved in any scandals or anything bad i can think of) is a better role model than him.
- grendelboogie, on 10/11/2007, -15/+7dragonlink2 beat me to it.
- rosefu, on 10/11/2007, -13/+4I would love to play with balls all day and get paid millions. >.>
- zenerdiode, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4What does it matter? The vast majority of that money is from advertisers. Advertisers feel they can reach a bigger/richer audience with Tiger than say any other soccer or tennis score, regardless of the nationality of the audience.
BTW, I'm perfectly happy letting idiots with too much money throw down thousands of dollars on golf clubs and outfits that have no effect on their game. And this idiocy pervades the entire world, not just the US. - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Michael Schumacher was earning about $60million/year when he retired last year.
- ausfahrt, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3Thats why the president starts oil wars so his stock can up. Maybe if we paid him like woods the world would be safer.
- bennnno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Part of Tiger Woods earnings are from international sources as well. Dubai paid him 3 million dollars to show up to a tournament, which he then won the million dollar prize.
- SnuKs, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4With all that money, I wonder what charities Tiger are involved in? Hopefully he's putting it to very good use.
- CBTF, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2*only* 400k?
- DuhStupid, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5@mad23dog (#7017484)
Thats 400k too damn much - Orlong, on 10/11/2007, -11/+1He shouldnt be making a nickel. Hits hits a stupid ball around with a stick for God's Sake. If some of these worthless athletes actually did just ONE day of REAL work instead of playing a game a few nights a week for a few months out of the year, they might have a sense of reality. Of course they probably couldnt hang in there doing a real job!!!!!!
- ptFoe, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1You don't spend you idiot, sports is international so his endorsed companies make money from the rest of the world too.
- cassmith, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I am probably preaching to the choir, however this shows how we Americans are complete slaves to the tv commercial. These gross figures would not be earned if we simply turned off our televisions, delved into some literature, visited museaums, cultural events and actually fed our brains once in a while. KILL YOUR TELEVISION.
- bobcatred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@snuks

You can play with my balls anytime.
- sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Interesting how so many of the people on the list play in the NBA.
- zeno60, on 10/11/2007, -9/+5...Well it is the Highest Paid "American" Athletes. Its either going to be Nascar, NBA, or Football.
- SnuKs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yea im surprised NFL players aren't listed more since it's a more intensive sport. Where's LT at?!
I can see why NBA and MLB player show up more. Both sports are more recieved and played internationally, thus giving them more sponsorship money. - MNiT, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6It should say its 'American' athletes in the description. Buried as inaccurate. Beckham makes what? $34m a year?
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Football players are at a disadvantage for endorsements because helmets cost them face recognition. They're at a disadvantage for contracts due to the relatively short season.
- RossTizma, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4You guys realize that football has a salary cap... in 2007 it will be $109 million per team, that's an average of just over $2 million per player per year. There are only 5 players on that list, it's a bit ignorant to mention NFL players being paid a lot without paying attention to MLB or NBA which has team bankrolls of $300-400 million with less than 30 players on a team.
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2I'm soon going to become an agent and I pray everyday that I can get just one NBA player. Football has a crazy amount of players and only 14 games on average. However, the NBA only has 12 to 14 man rosters -including practice players- and a 70+ game season. Further, NBA games are way cheaper than any NFL game to conduct. The difference means more money for the players. Second contracts are enormous in the NBA and the T.V. time that these guys receive is ridiculous. I don't know much about the business side of Golf, but I think that I need to start learning. :-)
So if all you diggers out there can just bow your head and just say a little prayer for me it would be greatly appreciated. I'm not asking for a Durant or anything. A late first round NBA pick would suit me just fine. - zenerdiode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2most of the big time NBA'ers get their money from endorsements, not the actual contract itself (not that the contract is tiny by any means). Like the NFL, the NBA has a salary cap, although it is a bit more lenient.
IMO, the OVERPAID athletes are the baseball players. $25 mil/year for A-Rod? Is he that great...really? Or any mega millionaire pitcher...work once every 5 days for HOPEFULLY 6 inning and get 17 mil/year?
Oh btw, the owners are just as greedy. Look at how much they really get from ticket sales and merchandising and see who's ripping you off more...the guy charging you $40 for View Reserved Seats for the fat 1B getting paid $10 mil/year to go 0-4 with 3K's and ground out. Baseball is cool, but baseball owners and players suck for ripping us off so badly. - alanwarp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Number of players on a team probably has something to due with it, NBA has one of the smallest number of players per team of the pro sports.
- c5mjohn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@alanwarp
Absolutely right, number of players on the teams is the key.
Percentage-wise, NBA players earn less then any of the other three leagues. Something like 47% of league revenue goes to the players, the rest goes to the owners. Its around 55% in the NFL. Even though the NFL makes much more as a league, and gives much more to the players, the sheer number of NFL players makes them less likely to be on a list like this. - Armando57, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"Yea im surprised NFL players aren't listed more since it's a more intensive sport. Where's LT at?!"
Fewer games in regular season = less available money. Salary cap doesn't help either. - tkonopkaz06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@manicallday
Last time I checked the NFL season was 16 regular season games. Perhaps NFL players may not want to consider you as an agent just yet.
- sonochamp, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22Funny how 4 of the 9 MLB players on this list are all from the Yankees.
A 24-30 record indicates a spectacular return on investment. And I can't help but laugh!- hmmmok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Laugh at Jeter's 4 rings.
- kardonn, on 10/11/2007, -19/+224 diggs to get on the frontpage?
- mortigon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10it goes by a certain formula... sports stories are less popular so it takes less diggs to get them to the front page...
- Bahimiron, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Not all that interesting which sports shell out the big bucks.
Some sports have spending caps, some don't.
Those that don't spend as much as they think they need to. - sherifftruman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Why isn't Joe Chestnut on this list?
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14they should of put soccer players on the list instead of just American sports.
- tizz66, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2True, though at least they didn't tack 'in the world!' on to the end of the title like some do.
- migpwr, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1I agree with this...
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12The list isn't limited by sport, but it is limited by American citizenship. If you go to the end of the article they also have the International Top 20: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/2007/index.20.html

- bicyclethief, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Roger Clemens and Michael Finley are some of the biggest jokers on that list.
- abev, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Gotta get paid to play in the big city. 50k fans a night pays the bills just fine.

"I'm gonna marry her someday"
get in line - manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm going to get both her and Oprah pregnant.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Wow. Dwayne Wade is a steal at 3.8 million...
- mortigon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Wait until his contract is up...
- Moosington, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah, NBA players don't make the big bucks until after their 3 year rookie contract is up.
- mindbender9, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5When are we going to see the highest paid athletes in the world? I'd like to see where Tiger measures up against some of the European stars (namely, F1 drivers like Kimi Raikkonen).
Actually, Tiger is usually at the top anyway.- RossTizma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6When you click on "International Top 20" at the bottom of the last page of the article.
- meebio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's probably close... Raikkonen's salary alone is 1 mil per week. without endorsements. IIRC Schumacher was close to Tiger after endorsements... 90 mill per year, somewhere around that.
- jasonsalas, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3I heard the breakdown of this list on ESPN's "Mike and Mike in the Morning." Crazy to think that Tiger Woods makes more off the course (~$110M) than the next five athletes away from their respective sports put together. Viva capitalism.
- origclubsoda, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Pattern: whites seem to be almost excluded from the top paying positions.
- dannybull, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3wish it was worldwide so it could include f1...might have changed the standings a bit...
- Corporaltaco, on 10/11/2007, -7/+1I hate this. All these assholes make so much money playing Basketball, while the hockey players get ***** on. They play a rough sport the roughest in my opinion. They get paid the worst however. Either way you slice it though they all get paid too much. Just like with every other job its a supply and demand thing. We have a huge amount of people in military so They get paid *****. There are very few Pro sports players in comparison therefore they get paid higher. Honestly the highest paying jobs should be for military and police and firefighters, for people who put their asses on the line for me and everyone else.
- RossTizma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually it's the skills necessary to do the job. More people are capable of being a teacher, firefighter or policeman... whereas significantly less have the intelligence to be a doctor or even a lawyer, so the pay is going to be higher.
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And seriously its all about how many people you can get to watch your sports and how much ***** you can sell for your team. If teachers could some how find a way to sell a couple million Jerserys at 60 dollars a pop then they would be getting paid a lot more money.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2@rosstizma
"whereas significantly less have the intelligence to be a doctor or even a lawyer, so the pay is going to be higher."
I agree with Doctor. Lawyers making obscene amounts of money is one of the biggest scam perpetrated upon the American public. You can get a JD through internet correspondence school. You don't need intelligence to be a lawyer, you just need to be able to argue convincingly. Everything else can be looked up. It's only in law school when they make you memorize Civil Procedure. You wouldn't believe how many lawyers forget their F.R.C.P once they are done with law school. That explains the multitude of malpractice suits out there which, of course employs more lawyers! What a racket! - Orlong, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Its no worse than the stupid NASCAR guys who sit on a seat and lock the wheels in a 45 degree angle and go around in circles for 4 hours.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"All these assholes make so much money playing Basketball, while the hockey players get ***** on."
Hockey players have a median salary of around $1 million per year. If that's getting ***** on I wish I was up to my neck in it.
Median NHL salary by team: http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/salaries/mediansalaries.aspx?year=2006-07
- BollWeevil318, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Rugby is a much rougher sport then hockey, they don't get half the fame or fortune that hockey players do.
- DuckByte, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1If the list included ALL athletes and not just Americans, there would be quite a few Formula 1 drivers at the top.
- pascalosti, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7suprised no hockey player made it, its a hell of allot more exciting then tennis, baseball, f1, nascar.. I could go on.
- Corporaltaco, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Oh yea rugby is tough your right I forgot about them for a minute. The whole skills thing kinda ties in with the supply and demand of jobs. The point I trying to make though is that we here in America have our priorities ***** up.
- ilikediggalots, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1This is another reason I like hockey they don't have nearly as much money to blow on useless stuff like these Basketball, baseball, football, wrestling, golf (more popular sports) guys...
- harvinator24, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2The new york yankees actually have more money then the entire nfl. I think they have the right to spend as much as they want.
- ToadPool, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I know this was American athletes, but an international one would be cool too, soccer and formula one.
- techmaster, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Kind of funny how America's most popular professional sport, NFL football, barely has any people on the list, while the list is dominated by a sport that most people couldn't give two ***** about, NBA basketball. I mean, yeah NBA is huge with a certain race in particular, but NFL is equally popular with all races.
- mogwaifearsatan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dugg down for blatant falsehood and vague racism.
- techmaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0You're an idiot if you don't agree with me that NFL is more popular than NBA. The Super Bowl is the biggest television event of the year, the only thing that even comes close is American Idol. Just because you don't like the NFL, or are a huge NBA fan, does not make me wrong. It's a cold, hard, fact, not an opinion. And, it is not racism to point out that one of the two sports is more popular with the general population than another. Get a life.
- techmaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Also, is there such a thing as vague racism? That sounds like an oxymoron. ***** idiot.
- techmaster, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Here's some more "blatant falsehood" for you.

Learn to use google before you start making rediculous accusations. - WhiteBoyDunkin, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0WOW basketball is not for a particular race as you say. It is for everybody who likes high flying exciting sports that don't stop after 3 second plays. Bball and the NBA are the best, NFL has WAY more players on a roster, like around 70 i think or 60. While the NBA has only 15. Plus NBA players are a bit more marketable then NFL players, plus more people are gona buy Kobe shoes then some NFL guys shoes.
- Atlantics, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2At first I read "50 Highest Paid Atheists."
- orxor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You're not the only one. I think it's the first symptom of reading digg too much.
- Buckeye70, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0Of course the socialist diggers hate seeing the free market work and show their disdain for anyone making more money than them. Of course no one puts up the list of the hollywood celebs making 20+ million a film. There is a reason Tiger makes the money he does, he is the best there is.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3People make the same comments about movie star salaries, so you're off base there. Also calling people who express that opinion socialists is ridiculous. Almost everybody I know thinks the salaries made by professional athletes are ridiculous, and they are. On an empirical level being paid $100 million to hit a ball with a stick is mind-boggling. It's a quirk of capitalism and our sports-obsessed society.
Before anybody gets their panties in a twist I don't have a problem with the salaries. Are they absurd? Absolutely, but they're also perfectly logical. Athletes generate a tremendous amount of income and deserve to be compensated accordingly. If people really feel athletes and entertainers are making too much then they ought to turn off the TV, and stop going to games, movies, and concerts, and not buy the merchandise. They won't get any support from me though, because I love sports and entertainment.- WhiteBoyDunkin, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0Do you know how much work it takes to be a professional athlete and how little time they get. They will be lucky if they are still playing in their 30's. So put that in concidiration, even though the top of the sports don't have to worry, but the less paid deserve everything they get. Even playing in college sports is a TON of work. I can't imagine if that was your profession.
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3People make the same comments about movie star salaries, so you're off base there. Also calling people who express that opinion socialists is ridiculous. - coldfusion1970, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well i knew Becks would be right up there if this list was open to all sports stars.
Football is definitely the big payer in the rest of the world.- Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1SOCCER, not football
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Looking at Forbes list of the Top 20 International athletes, it looks like 16 of them would have made the cut if they had been included in the Top 50. Six soccer players would have made the list (they make 9 of 20 on the international list), with Beckham coming in at #11 overall. Oddly enough, five foreign athletes that play for US sports teams would also have made the list.
At any rate it's not like they were trying to exclude anyone, they just divided the list.
- mogwaifearsatan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Lebron might be 6th on that list because of the endorsements, but check his salary compared to the others on the list.
- charlie55, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1i think there are horses that make even more than these guys, for being studs.
- xtraa, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I am missing Dirk Nowitzki...?!
//ah ok, he is at 18something at the internationals... would be #30 - Monstarr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Good to see LeBron earnt more money than KG. Most players should take note of this: you can still earn bug bucks WITHOUT taking up all of the salary cap. Knicks should really take note, me thinks.
- nick2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Favre @ #30, FTW!!!
- DjOverEZ, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's hilarious that Roger Clemens is making the money he is to play for the Yankees this year especially due to the fact that 1. He hasn't played a major league game yet and it's already June, 2. His team is hovering around 12 games out of first place in their division.
- SIck_Willy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought Steve Nash would be on there somewhere
- bigwillystyle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Im pretty sure David Beckam got paid 250 million to play soccer for some LA team
- dard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I don't think he's getting all in one year, but I've heard there was going to be in some reality show by next year too. He's likely to be in the top 10 for sure next year.
- dard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I didn't think Jalen Rose would be up there. Pretty good money for being a bench player and doing some sports commentary at the side.
- fani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Damn - "Now that's a team guy: Brady agreed to forgo a $6 million option bonus so the Pats had the cap room to sign notorious malcontent Randy Moss."
Go Tom Brady !!!
P.S. Yankees suck.. They won't win another championship till 2022 - ahughes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Hmm...not one NHL player.
- trebor4ever, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0Peyton Manning is in at least 10 commercials now. But he really needs to branch out to get above that 13 Mil he got last year. Why stop at credit cards and cell phones? Why not tampons and home pregnancy tests? The guy really just needs to get his face out there.
- Sil369, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Um, half of what they get are probably paid back in taxes, which in turn, pay for the war, haha.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2In 2005 Tiger Woods had 485 putts of 5 feet or less on the tour. He made every single one of them. How many of the basketball players on the list made 100% of their free throws? If any athlete earned their keep, it was Tiger.
- WhiteBoyDunkin, on 06/05/2008, -0/+0a free throw is 15 feet away.....
- DTwirler, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Dale Jr. is the most overpaid athlete on that list. He's paid more because of his name than anything else. Maybe if he'd actually win occasionally...
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Imagine that. Name recognition and popularity having something to do with how in demand you are for endorsements. The horror!
- swanee89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0holy octopus tentacle batman!
twoods completely destroys every one else! - iaminside, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1lol NBA players own half the list exactly it is a hard game and it requires a lot of skill but to be paid that much for just 1 guys is amazing but 25 guys in the top 50 i think i am ganna go out for basketball wen i am get a chance
- straybullet21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, apparently, SI has never even HEARD of formula 1. currently, kimi raikonnen makes 50million... that's JUST his salary from ferrari. not to mention endorsement deals. Michael Schumacher was making around 80 to 100 million a season before he retired. it just goes to show you, no one in the USA cares about F1. which is a real shame because it is the most popular sport in the world... literally!
- Kerskapaska, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0And again. Do you see any interest in football by these guys. No. And by football I mean football, not American football, which should be called handball;) As I'm saying below if this list was international half of the guys wouldn't eve be there.
- Kerskapaska, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0Ok. Now I'm curious. This thing what ever you call it is at Alll--> Sports --> Baseball. So does Tiger play baseball. Sure I know he doesn't. So why in the hell is this list called 50 highest paid athletes? It should be called 50 highest paid AMERICAN athletes... right? If You'd really make a list of 50 highest paid athletes half of those guys would be out of it.
- Kerskapaska, on 09/06/2008, -0/+0Now here's a list of highest paid athletes in the WORLD from 2005: (currency is euro)
1. Tiger Woods 70,7
2. Michael Schumacher 66,3
3. Andre Agassi 37,4
4. Shaquille O'neal 34,1
5. Kimi Räikkönen 32,7
Oscar de la Hoya 32,7
7. Michael Vick 30,4
8. David Beckham 24,5
Kevin Garnett 24,5
10. Peyton Manning 24,3
Can't really figure out what has happened in the sports since salaries have gone down in rest of the WORLD.
