- dragonlink2, on 10/11/2007, -8/+32well for this president, i find that way too much. an athlete like tiger woods (never involved in any scandals or anything bad i can think of) is a better role model than him.
- sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -1/+23Interesting how so many of the people on the list play in the NBA.

Oh great, a war reference on a sports news story - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Football players are at a disadvantage for endorsements because helmets cost them face recognition. They're at a disadvantage for contracts due to the relatively short season.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Classiest person of them all is #26.
"Starbury knows how to give back: In addition to his $15 line of sneakers, his $1 million donation to Katrina relief efforts was one of biggest by an athlete." - sonochamp, on 10/11/2007, -8/+22Funny how 4 of the 9 MLB players on this list are all from the Yankees.
A 24-30 record indicates a spectacular return on investment. And I can't help but laugh! - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12The list isn't limited by sport, but it is limited by American citizenship. If you go to the end of the article they also have the International Top 20: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/2007/index.20.html
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Michael Schumacher was earning about $60million/year when he retired last year.
- mortigon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10it goes by a certain formula... sports stories are less popular so it takes less diggs to get them to the front page...
- realgoat21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9SI's list of the "International 20": The top 20 non-American earners
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/2007/index.20.html - coljung, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Actually, the title should be:
50 Highest Paid Athletes in USA.
Although Tiger Woods is in fact the highest paid athlete in the world, the second one is Michale Shumacher, and after that i'm sure there's even a few soccer players, including beckham, with his recent contract for the MLS.
But hey, 100.000.000 !!!!!, respect for tiger. - sdcarter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Can you do it? More importantly, can you do it consistently? I know I can't.
- kinseyincanada, on 10/11/2007, -8/+14they should of put soccer players on the list instead of just American sports.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6When you click on "International Top 20" at the bottom of the last page of the article.
- SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6WTF is this?
Obviously youre not a golfer.
/the Dude - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+6"Over a 100 million for swinging a-rod accurately..."
I don't want to know what goes on in the Yankees locker room, thank you... - sherifftruman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Why isn't Joe Chestnut on this list?
- MrStylz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Schumie retired last year, so he's not an athlete anymore. Schumie had, for a long time, been the highest paid athlete in pure salary - around $50 million. Alonso has taken top spot for now - the move to McLaren will help him out even more.
- bennnno, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Part of Tiger Woods earnings are from international sources as well. Dubai paid him 3 million dollars to show up to a tournament, which he then won the million dollar prize.
- alanwarp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Number of players on a team probably has something to due with it, NBA has one of the smallest number of players per team of the pro sports.
- sfpfc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Stephon/Francis and the Knicks may not be ranked number one or attending the playoffs, but at least they brag about having the highest payroll. I can almost hear them now chanting we're number one we're number one
- migpwr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Michelle Wie wins, 750k salary and 20mil in endorsements.
- szembek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@HarryHunt: Roger Clemens "moves" more than tiger woods during a game? Hah.
- hmmmok, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Laugh at Jeter's 4 rings.
- trer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Wow. Dwayne Wade is a steal at 3.8 million...
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3"All these ***** make so much money playing Basketball, while the hockey players get ***** on."
Hockey players have a median salary of around $1 million per year. If that's getting ***** on I wish I was up to my neck in it.
Median NHL salary by team: http://asp.usatoday.com/sports/hockey/nhl/salaries/mediansalaries.aspx?year=2006-07 - mindbender9, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5When are we going to see the highest paid athletes in the world? I'd like to see where Tiger measures up against some of the European stars (namely, F1 drivers like Kimi Raikkonen).
Actually, Tiger is usually at the top anyway. - Mast3rDigg3r, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3lol wtf, what makes you think you know the salaries of professional athletes better than ESPN or SI?
- EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3People make the same comments about movie star salaries, so you're off base there. Also calling people who express that opinion socialists is ridiculous. Almost everybody I know thinks the salaries made by professional athletes are ridiculous, and they are. On an empirical level being paid $100 million to hit a ball with a stick is mind-boggling. It's a quirk of capitalism and our sports-obsessed society.
Before anybody gets their panties in a twist I don't have a problem with the salaries. Are they absurd? Absolutely, but they're also perfectly logical. Athletes generate a tremendous amount of income and deserve to be compensated accordingly. If people really feel athletes and entertainers are making too much then they ought to turn off the TV, and stop going to games, movies, and concerts, and not buy the merchandise. They won't get any support from me though, because I love sports and entertainment. - pascalosti, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7suprised no hockey player made it, its a hell of allot more exciting then tennis, baseball, f1, nascar.. I could go on.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4You guys realize that football has a salary cap... in 2007 it will be $109 million per team, that's an average of just over $2 million per player per year. There are only 5 players on that list, it's a bit ignorant to mention NFL players being paid a lot without paying attention to MLB or NBA which has team bankrolls of $300-400 million with less than 30 players on a team.
- SnuKs, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yea im surprised NFL players aren't listed more since it's a more intensive sport. Where's LT at?!
I can see why NBA and MLB player show up more. Both sports are more recieved and played internationally, thus giving them more sponsorship money. - EtherGnat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Tiger Woods is one of the most recognized athletes in the world, and golf is big business. American's alone spent $3.5 billion on golf equipment in 2006, and endorsements play a large part. It's not difficult to figure out.
- bobcatred, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@snuks
... The Tiger Woods Foundation... http://www.twfound.org/ - mogwaifearsatan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dugg down for blatant falsehood and vague racism.
- Hetman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And seriously its all about how many people you can get to watch your sports and how much ***** you can sell for your team. If teachers could some how find a way to sell a couple million Jerserys at 60 dollars a pop then they would be getting paid a lot more money.
- origclubsoda, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Pattern: whites seem to be almost excluded from the top paying positions.
- zenerdiode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2most of the big time NBA'ers get their money from endorsements, not the actual contract itself (not that the contract is tiny by any means). Like the NFL, the NBA has a salary cap, although it is a bit more lenient.
IMO, the OVERPAID athletes are the baseball players. $25 mil/year for A-Rod? Is he that great...really? Or any mega millionaire pitcher...work once every 5 days for HOPEFULLY 6 inning and get 17 mil/year?
Oh btw, the owners are just as greedy. Look at how much they really get from ticket sales and merchandising and see who's ripping you off more...the guy charging you $40 for View Reserved Seats for the fat 1B getting paid $10 mil/year to go 0-4 with 3K's and ground out. Baseball is cool, but baseball owners and players suck for ripping us off so badly. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5@mad23dog (#7017484)
Thats 400k too damn much - trer, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@mortigon
"I'm gonna marry her someday"
get in line - Moosington, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Yeah, NBA players don't make the big bucks until after their 3 year rookie contract is up.
- orxor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You're not the only one. I think it's the first symptom of reading digg too much.
- manicallday, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I'm going to get both her and Oprah pregnant.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually it's the skills necessary to do the job. More people are capable of being a teacher, firefighter or policeman... whereas significantly less have the intelligence to be a doctor or even a lawyer, so the pay is going to be higher.
- meebio, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3It's probably close... Raikkonen's salary alone is 1 mil per week. without endorsements. IIRC Schumacher was close to Tiger after endorsements... 90 mill per year, somewhere around that.
- intense321, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2True Story:
I'm in JFK International Airport and I was just sitting at a bar with a professional basketball player on one side of me, and an investment banker on the other side. The investment banker asked the basketball player how much he made each year. His response, "oh, about $11 million". The investment banker just laughed and said, "Yeah, I often wonder how you guys survive on so little."
And now I get to sit in the kiosk with wi-fi access and write about it :) It just goes to show.. It's all relative... - alanwarp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/more/specials/fortunate50/2007/index.20.html
- Atlantics, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2At first I read "50 Highest Paid Atheists."
- straybullet21, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wow, apparently, SI has never even HEARD of formula 1. currently, kimi raikonnen makes 50million... that's JUST his salary from ferrari. not to mention endorsement deals. Michael Schumacher was making around 80 to 100 million a season before he retired. it just goes to show you, no one in the USA cares about F1. which is a real shame because it is the most popular sport in the world... literally!
