- brownsound00, on 04/02/2008, -1/+14go jays! (i don't think they will make the playoffs... rolen is ALREADY injured...haha)
- Hockey13, on 04/02/2008, -2/+13To those of you who are complaining about a computer predicting the World Series, try to scrape together your cumulative knowledge and think about the implications of statistics in general. Baseball is a game that is ideal for statistical analysis because it is, essentially, the one team game that requires the least actual amount of teamwork...it's all about what individuals do collectively.
The Baseball Prospectus picks are, more often than not, pretty close to the mark. All it does is project the stats of the players on a team based on historical performance and age, and figure out, based on projected runs scored, runs against, etc., who might end up within a certain range. It's just a tool that we can use in analyzing teams...it's not actually "predicting" the future, guys. - Bukowsky, on 04/02/2008, -3/+13Here's to the Houston Astros! Finishing in a strong 5th place in the already weak NL central...
- amawg9, on 04/02/2008, -0/+10According to my own mathematical equations...the Cubs are 0-2
- inactive, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6From what I understand, it tries to use the past performance of each player to predict stats and playing time this year, based on change in age and other factors. Once you know the runs created of the batters and ERA of the pitchers (and those of the opponents), you can actually generate a pretty accurate expected W-L record. But you're right that figuring out what the ERA and RC are in advance is basically guesswork.
- inactive, on 12/07/2008, -1/+7The Astros are going to blow this year for sure.
- inactive, on 04/02/2008, -0/+6i saw this on an episode of numb3rs
- alittleroy101, on 04/03/2008, -0/+4@chanop.
Do you have two different personalities? - fishrjv, on 04/03/2008, -1/+5Mullets and douchebags, actually
- azimuthal, on 04/03/2008, -0/+4Unfortunately the blue jays will never make the playoffs. This team is the best they have fielded in a decade+. The predictor is right, 3rd place is our destiny. After the jays won 2 championships, the league's were re-conferenced(94). The jays lost the opportunity to beat on the Indians, Tigers, and Brewers. The rules were also changed so that only 2 out of the yankees, rsox, and jays could make the playoffs.
The Jays are aging, there is no where to go but down after this season. How long will teddy rogers keep pumping millions into the team? - elipabst, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Could be worse, you could be Pittsburgh. If they have a losing season this year, they'll tie the all-time pro sports record for most consecutive losing seasons. Look for me at their games, I'll be the guy with the paper bag over his head.
- ace429k, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4East Coast baseball makes me sad. thats all anyone focuses on. never the other team
- westway2world, on 04/02/2008, -0/+4Being 20 and going to school full time usually entails getting a ***** job to help pay for said schooling; that way my grammar will never be as ***** as yours.
- powlol, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3So, according to my own mathematical equations... they Cubs will finish the 2008 season 160-2.
- RonnyIsRondo, on 04/02/2008, -3/+6According to my mathematical equations the cubs will choke like they always do. Theres a reason why its been 100 years.
- armorking, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3Well maybe he can predict NJIT's college basketball record for the 2008-2009 season...maybe the team will most likely win a game after a 0-29 season aka the worst basketball record ever in D-1.
- npcabral, on 04/02/2008, -1/+4hrm...more easy... ... ...
- alittleroy101, on 04/03/2008, -0/+3When you make fun of a group of people (Boston fans) and ***** up basic English, I believe that I (as a member of that group) have a right to make fun of you. Deal with it.
- jr8rulz, on 04/02/2008, -0/+3Given that they have the Reds in the same division, you have hope of not being cellar dwellars!
- Number23, on 04/03/2008, -0/+2Red Sox
- RonnyIsRondo, on 04/02/2008, -0/+2AND David Ortiz is set to go 0-500
- mv10, on 04/03/2008, -1/+3This same guy made the Front Page Last Year for Predicting the Yankees would win over 115 games last year..
How'd That Turn Out... - chanop, on 04/03/2008, -1/+3three, thanks
- evanmyers, on 04/02/2008, -2/+4The Royals are off on their way to going undefeated!
- ell0bo, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Make sure to ask him how his model missed his Mets choking to the Phillies last year, and what the odds are they don't do it again?
- D3ADBOLT, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1beat the opponents...soundly....in the skirmish
- inactive, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1On paper, the best team is probably Boston. Followed by New York and Detroit, and then the Mets.
We'll see. - bigd2112, on 04/03/2008, -2/+3Go Sox!
- lordmike, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1If the Indians only win 87 games, there will be riots in Cleveland... The pain from choking so badly last year is still very raw... The expectation this year is to win the pennant.... anything less is going to be a huge disappointment!
- Peko, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Speaking from true mathematical and statistical certainty: zomg-theyre-due
- chanop, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1I like to keep up with all the divisions. I'll definitely be following Torre and the Dodgers this year.
- jonxblaze, on 04/02/2008, -7/+8According to my own mathematical equations...the Cubs will win the world series this year.
- TheKorn2, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2Anyone else find it HIGHLY SUSPECT that an article about a computer program that does all sorts of statistical analysis on baseball teams' seasons HAS NOT ONE concrete stastic about how accurate the program is?
I don't call getting it right 50.1% of the time a stastical win. ("According to its creator the model has more often than not picked correctly rather than incorrectly.") - iansmith6, on 04/02/2008, -2/+3It picks correctly more often than not. Not too hard to do, I work for a gaming company that produces a baseball simulation game (http://www.sportsmogul.com/) and it does a pretty good job as well, but what it does best is show how even with all the numbers basball has, randomess will will make the outcomes vary wildly. I'd even bet our model is far more in depth than his. :-)
- Deadpixel1221, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Screw the article I just wanna know what nintendo game is in the picture. Looks like a blast.
- BLish, on 04/02/2008, -1/+2The Tigers are just "playing opossum" to catch em off guard. give em time!
Go Tigers! - alittleroy101, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1@chanop Well I think it will clearly be Boston v. NY in the ALCS. I think it'll be a coin flip to see who comes out on top. Realistically, the ALCS is often times the real World Series.
- Ricapar, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2Hah, I'm in his class this semester!
- CapnMarko, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1iTunes link to the video about this story ....
http://deimos3.apple.com/WebObjects/Core.woa/Brows ... - Rethcir, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Seriously, Gagne is a fat washed up ex-roid. His sweet shades won't save games for you.
- Chirp08, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1not to mention its in/by camden, look up that city and check out the top-10 lists its made for a laugh
- chanop, on 04/03/2008, -1/+2I poked at you specifically because I checked out your history, and it was nothing but comments busting on people's grammar/spelling. Sorry I type ***** up very quickly on digg. If I were sending an email to my boss, I'd definately comb through it and make sure my grammar was up to par. This is Digg, I don't give a *****. I'm not saying ALL Boston fans are not this way, but I'd say a good 90% of them are pretty ***** brutal (And to be fair, a lot of Yankee fans are too). You can make fun of me all you want, Trust me when I say I'm not getting offended or upset in any way. I think everyone has a right to make fun of everyone. You should be making fun of me for getting preachy now. Back to the topic, Boston had a solid ***** team last year, and from the start of this season it looks like they've stayed solid. It should be a good season to watch. It will be nice to see the yankees beat your ***** asses too
- CapnMarko, on 04/04/2008, -0/+1
crap ... non iTunes linking thing ....
iTunes U - NJIT - Research - Tech of Baseball - brettuthius, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1So I guess the model doesn't predict the Orioles going 161 and 1. Weird.
- mmortal03, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1I don't know about their baseball predictive chances, but I do know that their basketball team's results couldn't have been much worse. Maybe they had already mathematically predicted before hand that their efforts this season were going to be futile...
http://njithighlanders.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/sc ... - mmortal03, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Small world. I think I have run into your company's president online somewhere in a discussion before, but I just can't put a finger on where right at the moment. Your software looks like something I will have to pick up and play with sometime in the future, if only to see how your A.I. works to get some programming inspiration regarding computer sports simulation systems.
- Slayerdude51982, on 04/03/2008, -0/+1Because Yankees and Red Sox are baseball.
