- FHIwindows, on 02/06/2009, -10/+31I'll give Wal-Mart a thumbs up for that even though I hate the company
- niccha, on 02/06/2009, -3/+21As much as the hugeness of Wal-Mart scares me sometimes, I like it when they use their powers for good. I just wish they'd do it all the time.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -3/+17Why do you hate the company?
And give some logical reasons, not just "they move in to small towns and ruin local business with their Everyday Low Prices"
There's nothing evil about affordability. - DaviDTC, on 02/07/2009, -2/+13How is that any different than driving there at 3pm or any other time to get the food? It would probably be better. Less time sitting in traffic, lights will be green or change green in a couple seconds of you stopping, these both equal less gas used.
- rockon4life45, on 02/07/2009, -4/+13I ***** love Wal-Mart, especially at 3 AM when nothing else is open and I just want some pizza rolls. Oh yeah, yay saving gas.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+11Your Civic hybrid's batteries weren't so "green" to manufacture.
- maxgladwell, on 02/06/2009, -1/+8What ever happened to BioWillie?
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+8nonsense
my countrymen are too thin to be used as fuel - wkrausmann, on 02/07/2009, -3/+9Yet, no one picks on Target or K-mart for paying less.

Some people think you are only being green if it doesn't help you.
Walmart is currently one of the greenest store chains around. All the new buildings they build are 80 daylight during the day and have huge solar panels on them to help cover the energy they use lighting the buildings at night. Some of the near rivers are starting to put open water turbines in the river that generate electricity with out requiring a damn or hurting the environment.
All these moves are very green things to do but no one will recognize that because the reason Wal-mart is doing it is to save millions of dollars on electricity. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6Or ANY store for similar positioons. You think those locally owned mom and pop stores are paying more than minimum wage or giving any beneifts?
- thebaron2, on 02/07/2009, -0/+6....and the environment benefits tremendously.
Is there something wrong with win/win scenarios? - thcobbs, on 02/07/2009, -2/+7Wow... its obvious how little you know about Wal-Mart distribution practices.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+7As a Wal-Mart shareholder, I don't give a ***** what the motive is as long as it reduces costs to the company and maximizes profit.
- thcobbs, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5lol.... really?
Wal-Mart is KNOWN for squeezing the most money out of its supply chain. How could they NOT do this? - minorgods, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5Yea, I had a stick up my ass about being on Digg on a Friday night.. my bad. Sometimes I shouldn't be allowed to have an internet connection...
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -2/+6I saw that shockumentary too.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5Well done on making unfounded, ridiculous, random accusations. I think you are the one who ruined the American economy.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+5Every company does everything for profit. Whether it is charitable stuff for publicity, or going green, also for publicity, it is always about the bottom line.
- WELLDOITLIVE, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4It will help their bottom line, so it's good for them ;)
- nitrojunky24, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4deli frys chicken and such that can add up at super wal-mart
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+4I've always thought aborted feti to be a clean burning and abundant form of alternative fuel.
- ThantiK, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3I smell a digg graveyard incoming.
- Ymeg, on 02/07/2009, -3/+5They took the job. It would seem that they like to be sodomized.
- thebaron2, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3A lot of times they do use trains to get to a particular ship point, but eventually the boxcar that's on the train must get transferred to a truck, unless your local WalMart has a train station connected to it.
And even if YOUR WalMart is near a train station, the vast majority of them are not. As some else mentioned earlier, until teleportation is viable, we're going to be stuck with trucks. - codyman, on 02/07/2009, -1/+3Hey Walmart has its problems obviously but at least give them credit for doing this...
I don't see your fancy organic specialty market trying to increase the efficiency of their fleet... - freakFlag, on 02/07/2009, -0/+2That comment is borderline inappropriate but I dugg you up anyway, I celebrate diversity.
- Ymeg, on 02/07/2009, -2/+4.. A pillar of our economy.
- pintomp3, on 02/07/2009, -5/+7How about strong-arming local towns into picking up the tabs for infrastructure and getting tax breaks that local small businesses can't get? How about getting caught fudging employee timesheets in order to avoid paying overtime?
- thcobbs, on 02/07/2009, -2/+4@pintomp3
Look up Madison, MS. A small town near the capitol of the state that strong-armed Wal-Mart into making concessions on its architecture, offerings, and employment practices.
You might be surprised. - sexybobo, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2Remote control cars have been running on battery's for years why not scale the technology up and put it in a truck. Oh wait it is because it is a lot harder then it sounds to do that.
- jbond, on 02/09/2009, -0/+1it would be more impressive if they'd put a bit more effort into streamlining the cab. Good to see people experimenting with Diesel Electric Hybrids. So where's my Diesel Electric VW?
- Ymeg, on 02/07/2009, -2/+3How did Wal-Mart destroy the economy?
- doiveo, on 02/06/2009, -9/+10They use a ton to sodomize their employees with their paychecks
- kh99, on 02/07/2009, -3/+4They aren't interested in reducing emissions or importing less oil, only in saving money running their fleet. Not criticizing them, just sayin'. It's still pretty cool.
- dakdak900, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1We were when the problem started, 1997, by joining Kyoto it gives us the ability to use its members to all put pressure on China to join. If China had joined Kyoto it would have slowed down their growth; check the web there's a million articles about China ruining the environment to grow their economy quickly.
Also, we make demand on companies all the time as consumers; see the rapid abandonment of PBA plastics, the rapid adoption of well made Japanese cars, success of American Apparel. We, as a government, also have the ability to require things like tests for lead in children's toys - C0MF0RTABLYnumb, on 08/07/2009, -0/+1I'm sure it's a Diesel-Turbo-Hybrid!
- aussieNickuss, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2Why is it so difficult to produce a hybrid truck? Train locomotives have been running on diesel/electric hybrid systems for more than 50 years. Why not take the same tech, scale it down and put it into a truck? Using an existing technology and just replacing the fuel source would be a lot easier than developing new tech.
- sexybobo, on 02/07/2009, -0/+1You are seriously trying to tell wal-mart how to save money?
I think they are pretty good at that themselves. - inactive, on 02/07/2009, -1/+2I agree, but than, so are other trucks everywhere. Any business that has large shipments... Until Teleportation is an option, we're stuck with the traffic.
- hutch1973, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1Some upper level executive made a decision without knowing all the facts, that's what I'm saying. I've walked through one of the new Wal Marts here, I'm convinced if anyone performed an energy audit they could save a minimum of 10k a year. I recently did one on a small salon, with 5% of the hvac equipment Wal Mart has, and they saved $350 a year. Keep in mind, that's on a piece of equipment that should last for 20 years.
Little surprised at all the negative diggs, but then again, given a lot of the comments on here, assuming a lot of diggers are huge wal mart fans. - AntP1, on 02/08/2009, -1/+1wow, this would be a nice trend to catch on.
- inactive, on 02/07/2009, -6/+6I would've never thought of Walmart to be one of the first huge corporations (if not the first) to do this. Maybe there is a light at the end of the tunnel?
- carlosos, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1Lost your license? ;-)
- sexybobo, on 02/07/2009, -2/+2@pintomp3
Walmart wanted to open a new store where a school (a vocational school that was part of the local school district) I went to was. It is true that they wanted the land so they got it. But they also bought the school district a new larger plot of land 7 blocks away and built a state of the art vocational school on it in addition to paying fair market value for the land. - randumbusername, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1i don't know. you may have to become more green. the pre-hybrid trucks are still more effiicient than your civic.
- thcobbs, on 02/07/2009, -2/+2No prob (used to work as an unloader at a super walmart after getting my BS in computer engineering....)
Sometimes you just got to pay the bills. - akany, on 02/08/2009, -0/+0They will save a lot of money with hybrid trucks... guess that and the positiv publicity where the main reasons.
- thcobbs, on 02/07/2009, -1/+1He went bankrupt in Mississippi. Next time I'm in the area, I'll take come pics and post it.
